William Boyd's popular, kid-friendy "Hopalong Cassidy" westerns were hardly known for their horror content.
But in "Fool's Gold" (1947) there's a scene or two that might've given its younger viewers a shiver.
Especially the ones with an aversion to spiders.
The creepiest scene is saved for later.
It goes by quick, but it's a pretty indelible image.
(And one which was removed when the movies were later edited into TV episodes.)

UNIVERSAL PICTURES and AMBLIN ENTERTAINMENT Present "JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM"
In Association with LEGENDARY PICTURES / PERFECT WORLD ENTERTAINMENT
It’s been three years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles. When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (CHRIS PRATT) and Claire (BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission.
Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times. With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more aweinspiring and terrifying than ever before. Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Stars Pratt and Howard return alongside executive producers STEVEN SPIELBERG and COLIN TREVORROW for the epic action-adventure. Directed by J.A. BAYONA (The Impossible, The Orphanage), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is written by Jurassic World’s director, Trevorrow, and its co-writer, DEREK CONNOLLY. Producers FRANK MARSHALL and PAT CROWLEY once again partner with Spielberg and Trevorrow in leading the filmmakers for this stunning installment. BELÉN ATIENZA joins the team as a producer.
The accomplished group is joined by co-stars JAMES CROMWELL (Babe) as Benjamin Lockwood, a wealthy entrepreneur who was Dr. John Hammond’s partner in creating Jurassic Park; JUSTICE SMITH (The Get Down) as Franklin Webb, Claire’s whip-smart hacker in the Dinosaur Protection Group, who is more comfortable being the “guy in the chair” at home base than in the middle of action; DANIELLA PINEDA (The Detour) as Dr. Zia Rodriguez, a genius paleo-veterinarian whose abilities in this archaic sub-specialty have never been tested on live dinosaurs; RAFE SPALL (Prometheus) as Eli Mills, Lockwood’s right-hand man who recruits Claire and Owen to bring the dinosaurs to a private reserve; TED LEVINE (Shutter Island) as Wheatley, a tough-asnails mercenary that Mills puts in charge to run the ground operation at Isla Nublar; TOBY JONES (Captain America series) as Eversoll, brought in by Mills to supervise the operations at Lockwood estate after the rescue mission; GERALDINE CHAPLIN (A Monster Calls) as Iris, housekeeper of the estate and keeper of family secrets; and ISABELLA SERMON, who makes her debut as Lockwood’s infectiously optimistic granddaughter, Maisie, a 10-year-old who has lived at the mansion her entire life.
Series stalwarts BD WONG and JEFF GOLDBLUM reprise their roles as, respectively, Dr. Henry Wu and Dr. Ian Malcolm. Wu, a corrupt geneticist whose name is synonymous with InGen, is as near-sighted as ever in his pursuit of scientific breakthroughs. For his part, eccentric mathematician Malcolm first predicted doom for Hammond’s Jurassic Park a quarter of a century prior. His unparalleled grasp on chaos theory and those who abuse power will prove invaluable…especially as Owen and Claire uncover a most deadly endgame.
Bayona’s army of creative talents are led by cinematographer OSCAR FAURA (A Monster Calls, The Orphanage), production designer ANDY NICHOLSON (Gravity, Captain America: The First Avenger), costume designer SAMMY SHELDON DIFFER (Ex Machina, Imitation Game), Oscar®-winning creature effects creative supervisor NEAL SCANLAN (Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Oscar®-winning composer MICHAEL GIACCHINO (Up, Jurassic World). The Jurassic Park theme is by five-time Academy Award® winner JOHN WILLIAMS (Star Wars saga, Harry Potter series). Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was filmed in the United Kingdom and on the Hawaiian islands.
Funny, tragic, quirky (in a good way, not a cutesy way), and endlessly unpredictable, OH LUCY! (Film Movement, 2017) is one of those movies I approached with guarded skepticism until it gradually became one of the best things I've seen in years.
Shinobu Terajima is Setsuko, a detached, joyless office drone who lives in a tiny storage locker of an apartment in Japan and leads a life of quietly dreary despair. As the film opens, she witnesses a suicide at the train station one morning and barely reacts except to look vaguely envious.
When her flakey niece Mika talks her into taking an English class, she meets the eccentric young American teacher John (Josh Hartnett), who gives her a new persona as blonde-wigged "Lucy" and teaches her to talk and act more like an American.
As Lucy, Setsuko slowly emerges from her shell and falls in love with John. Unfortunately, John's in love with Mika and follows her when she runs off to Los Angeles.
The smitten Setsuko follows John, and Mika's mother Ayako (Kaho Minami), who is Setsuko's sister, goes with her in search of Mika. And when they all end up in southern California together, the plot is off to the races.
OH LUCY! is wonderfully funny in its own way, but I wouldn't call it a "comedy" because it's also so deeply sad and at times shockingly tragic. While the sisters are amusingly at odds with each other, there's more than just sibling rivalry going on, especially when we discover just how profound their rift really is.
John is also boyishly funny, a likable guy who not only gets left by his girlfriend but opens the door to find "Lucy" and her frantic sister suddenly moving in with him.
Much of the film's sharp but subtle humor arises from him reluctantly presiding over their fish-out-of-water experiences in sunny California, but Setsuko's clumsy romantic advances will trigger an equal amount of harsh reality-style drama which keeps reminding us that real life isn't a cute comedy.
All of this is consistently engaging, while some of the plot turns are positively shocking. Even a comfortingly predictable twist at the end came as a surprise because it involves a character I'd forgotten about.
Performances are perfect all around. I couldn't take my eyes off Shinobu Terajima as "Lucy", while Josh Hartnett is so good here that he erases my bad memories of him in PEARL HARBOR. First-time feature director Atsuko Hirayanagi handles it all with confidence and style.
A wonderfully and tastefully emotional ending brings OH LUCY! full circle, not exactly tying things up in a tidy bundle but leaving us with the hope that it could happen. It's one of those movies that I feel better for having seen.

Jennifer Garner "PEPPERMINT" New Trailer & Poster
Peppermint is an action thriller which tells the story of young mother Riley North (Garner) who awakens from a coma after her husband and daughter are killed in a brutal attack on the family.
When the system frustratingly shields the murderers from justice, Riley sets out to transform herself from citizen to urban guerilla.
Channeling her frustration into personal motivation, she spends years in hiding honing her mind, body and spirit to become an unstoppable force - eluding the underworld, the LAPD and the FBI - as she methodically delivers her personal brand of justice.
A haunted house story with an undercurrent of Italian flavor, HOUSE OF EVIL (2017) is like a venerable old recipe done up with fresh ingredients and a few modern twists.
John (Andrew Harwood Mills) and Kate (Lucy Drive) are a likable young couple eager to escape the hustle and bustle of the city by moving into a secluded old Italian villa in the woods. At first all is well and the quaint antiquity of the place and its rustic surroundings prove a balm to their frazzled nerves.
We, however, know better, having just seen the pre-titles sequence in which a crazy-looking guy--the house's previous occupant--is massacring his family in the basement.
And when John starts hanging out down there for hours in his makeshift darkroom, developing pictures that he's been obsessively snapping of who knows what and generally acting more distant and strange, Kate begins to sense that something is, to put it mildly, amiss.
Those familiar with Italian horror cinema will probably recognize certain elements of it here, yet directors Luca Boni and Marco Ristori have, in addition to a pleasing sense of visual style, a subtle touch that creates mood and atmosphere gradually without relying on shock and jump scares.
The usual wallow in Grand Guignol-style gore is also limited to just a few disturbing images. And unlike much of modern horror cinema, this chiller never tries to startle us with loud noises, flashing lights, or mood-killing CGI.
What the film really does well--aided by a lean script and good performances--is to make us feel just how creepy it is to be in that dark, shadowy house in the middle of the night, seeing things flitting by in the half-light and listening for unfamiliar sounds in the eerie silence.
In place of shock is an ever-growing sense of dread, with John becoming a stranger before Kate's very eyes and fleeting images of ghostly figures haunting the hazy darkness of their bedroom or lurking in the corners of the musty attic.
Even the initial joy of suddenly finding herself pregnant will soon serve only to increase her feeling of being trapped in an increasingly dire predicament. Father Andrew, a local parish priest whom Kate meets while walking her dog, not only fails to comfort her but makes the situation worse by informing her of the horrific backstory of her new home.
Like an ever-tightening net of fear, HOUSE OF EVIL draws us into Kate's nightmare until things take a disturbingly "Twilight Zone"-ish turn. A final reveal tacks on too much last-minute exposition and familiar touches of "Rosemary's Baby", but if you're looking for an oppressively creepy and disheartening experience, this one's for you.

In 1935, the film "Hop-Along Cassidy" introduced William Boyd as the title character.
He would soon become one of the most popular western heroes of all time.
Cassidy's first name was Bill, but before long he would be known only as "Hopalong" Cassidy.
Here's why...

Movies that consist mostly of dialogue exchanged within limited settings are usually the sign of a low-budget production, and often of a not very good one. But ALTERED PERCEPTION (SKD, 2018), which fits the former description pretty accurately, is very good indeed. That is, if you enjoy settling in for some intense relationship drama.
What gives this film its kicker is that the three couples we follow are paid, voluntary subjects in a controlled experiment to test a new drug that is supposed to focus and amplify one's perceptions, obstensibly to enable people with certain emotional problems to better handle reality.
As we learn during a post-mortem hearing in which the drug company's researchers are called on the carpet to explain and defend some of the experiment's distinctly questionable results, things didn't go quite as expected for at least one of the three test couples.
Hidden camera footage and first-person video diary entries let us in on how things went down in each case. One couple consists of a lawyer and his ex-prostitute lover who is forever accusing him of dredging up her past.
Another couple is dealing with basic jealousy issues, with the wife's paranoia growing to dangerous proportions. And in the third case, two lesbians are at odds when one accuses her partner's own brother of rape.
I was leery of this one at first since it had the potential to be nothing but a talky bore with endless chatter in place of action and cinematic interest. Gradually, however, each story grows more and more complex and interesting until finally the entire experience as a whole is fairly riveting as well as endlessly unpredictable.
It helps, of course, that the dialogue is smartly written, the direction more than capable for a film so confined to its interior sets, and the acting uniformly fine by an above-average cast.
Suspicions, recriminations, and accusations, all amplified by a drug that might or might not be "altering perceptions" of some emotionally volatile characters, are conveyed in dialogue and situations that build steadily until each of three stories pays off in satisfying fashion.
At least one is resolved positively, thank goodness, keeping things from being totally downbeat and pessimistic. But as we suspect all along, others will not work themselves out well. In fact, at least one couple finds itself in the middle of what might easily be described as horror-movie territory.
But thanks to the overall sharp, intelligent work by all involved, ALTERED PERCEPTIONS rises above what might have been a static, forced melodrama and comes off as a modest but well-wrought success. If you can get into this sort of mental cat-and-mouse game between couples who fit together like mismatched jigsaw pieces, you'll find yourself drawn into this trio of dysfunctional tales right up to the shocking conclusion.

It still sounds like "Carrie!" to me.
