"LOURDES" Stunningly Beautiful Doc Follows Pilgrims Seeking Healing At World Famous Site On DVD 9/28

Icarus Films

"LOURDES"

A film by Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai
From Distrib Films • An Icarus Films Release

On to DVD  September 28th

Lourdes: A stunningly beautiful mountainous village in the Southwest foothills of the Pyrenees went from a sleepy scenic town to a sacred wonder after 1858, when a 14-year-old peasant girl claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a remote grotto. Today, the town is second only to Paris in the number of annual visitors (6 million), part venerated shrine, part Disneyland (shops selling bottled holy water and Virgin Mary-related tchotchkes).

WATCH THE TRAILER:

Vast processions of people seeking a miracle fuel a small army of caregivers who accompany them. These pilgrims are a surprising cross-section of humanity: accident victims, the terminally ill, an overweight and bullied teenager, a contingent of aging Paris prostitutes, et alia. LOURDES is an insightful meditation on the human capacity for empathy and hope and the mystery of religious faith in the face of profound tribulation.

A celebration of Jewish culture: "YIDDISH (+Egg Cream)" on DVD/VOD 3/2

A Must See! Makes ancient words resonate today.” -- LE MONDE

"YIDDISH"

A film by Nurith Aviv
 An Icarus Films Release

Arriving on DVD/VOD This March 2nd
DVD•Vimeo•iTunes•OVID.TV

The latest little miracle from director Nurith Aviv.” – SOFILM

An expressive hybrid with roots in German, Hebrew, and Slavic languages, Yiddish has been shamed, banned, and nearly wiped out, but in fact it’s a vernacular with rich political, historical, religious, socio-economic and literary import.

In Nurith Aviv’s unexpected, original documentary, seven young interviewees— some Jews and some not—share their love for the Yiddish language. And they each tell of their connection to a particular poet they love, from the period between the two World Wars, a time which saw a great flowering of Yiddish culture and creativity, including of modernist, avant-garde poetry.

The poets discussed in the film are Celia Dropkin, Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Anna Margolin, Peretz Markish, Avrom Sutzkever, Debora Vogel, and Yehoyesh. Filmed in France, Germany, Israel, Lithuania and Poland, YIDDISH brings the language, through their words, to life.

Included with the DVD, a booklet of translated Yiddish Poems and the short doc:

EGG CREAM
(Available as a separate VOD offering)

— Marie-Claire

Based On Leïla Slimani’s Internationally Acclaimed Best-Selling Novel!

THE PERFECT NANNY

A film by Lucie Borleteau
From Distrib Films
On to DVD June 23rd

“Plays the card of dramatic suspense to the point where it comes close to the horror film.”
— Cineuropa

Myriam (Leïla Bekhti) and Paul (Antoine Reinartz), are your typical pair of bourgeois Parisian parents of two young children, toddler Adam, and 5-year-old Mila, who are taking up all of Myriam’s time.

When Myriam decides to go back to work despite her husband’s initial reluctance, the couple starts looking for a nanny. After a very selective process, they finally find the perfect candidate, Louise, a poised 40-year old woman who is an instant hit with both kids and parents. The couple soon learns, however, that appearances can be deceiving.

WATCH THE TRAILER

Adapted from the eponymous novel by Leïla Slimani, winner of the Goncourt prize and based on a true story that took place in Manhattan in 2012, THE PERFECT NANNY propelled by actress Karin Viard, who masterfully embodies the role of a disturbed nanny whose mask of perfection gradually cracks to reveal something far darker underneath.

“Borleteau’s direction is blunt and lacking any vanity, embracing the pulpy nature of this narrative and allowing each performance to breathe.” — CRITERION CAST

Icarus Films

MINUTE BODIES: THE INTIMATE WORLD OF F. PERCY SMITH

A film by Stuart A. Staples
New Original Score by Tindersticks
Available on , iTunes, and Amazon Video June 4

“A beautiful hypnotic melange.
” —The Guardian

“Staples adds many hues to the sense of the sublime inherent in Percy Smith’s work." —Hyperal

“Seeps under the audience’s skins and into their veins.” —Sight & Sound

“A bewitching, hypnotic look at a remarkable world.” —The Creators Project

This meditative, immersive film from Stuart A. Staples (lead singer of
Tindersticks) is a tribute to the astonishing work and achievements of
naturalist, inventor and pioneering filmmaker F. Percy Smith.

Smith worked in the early years of the 20th century, developing various
cinematographic and micro-photographic techniques to capture nature’s secrets in action.

MINUTE BODIES is an interpretive edit that combines Smith’s original footage with a new contemporary score to create a hypnotic, alien yet familiar dreamscape that connects us to the sense of wonder Smith must have felt as he peered through his own lens and saw these microscopic worlds for the first time.

(53 minutes / 2016 / B&W)

BONUS! Includes 4 short films by F. Percy Smith:

THE BIRTH OF A FLOWER (1910, 7 mins)
NATURE’S DOUBLE LIFERS - FERNS AND FRONDS (1932, 10 mins)
HE WOULD A-WOOING GO (1936, 8 mins)
