BLUE VALENTINE -- DVD Review by Porfle

Love is a battlefield, the poet once said.  And as in most wars, the opponents often don't even know what they're fighting for.  Such is the case in director/co-writer Derek Cianfrance's BLUE VALENTINE (2010), the story of a relationship that goes from love to indifference and finally to outright hostility.  The film, unfortunately, bypasses entertainment altogether and goes straight to outright boredom.

We join the sad dissolution of the marriage between Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) already in progress.  Dean's an unambitious housepainter who's content to be a husband and a father to their cute little daughter Frankie (Faith Wladyka), but Cindy, a nurse who once had dreams of becoming a doctor, grows more distant and disillusioned every day.  Mostly she seems to have simply grown tired of Dean, moping as he romps playfully with Frankie and rejecting his romantic advances as though he were the poster boy for bad breath.

Even when Dean books the "Future Room" in a sleazy sex motel so they can have a passionate night together, Cindy's about as sexually yielding as an anchor chain on an aircraft carrier.  Her increasingly hostile attitude drives Dean to drink, which makes her even more hostile toward him.  This vicious cycle is reflected in their maddeningly circuitous dialogue ("You should try thinking about what you say, instead of just saying what you think," she chides for no particular reason), much of which was improvised by the actors.  While this sometimes makes characters' speech sound more natural, here it simply leads to a lot of shaggy-dog dialogue that's as frustratingly pointless for us as it is for Dean and Cindy.

As a counterpoint to their crumbling marriage, we're shown flashbacks of how they met and fell in love ten years earlier.  While helping an old man move into a nursing home, Dean spots Cindy in her elderly Gramma's room and is instantly smitten.  After they meet-cute, he cute-stalks her until she finally gives in, mainly because the jock-jerk she's been having sweaty sex with has knocked her up and dumped her.  But their love is made sweetly manifest during a saccharine sidewalk scene in which he sings and plays the ukelele like Tiny Tim while she tapdances (also improvised for our pleasure).

Along the way we get to hear Dean and his moving company coworker Marshall (Marshall Johnson) having the kind of contemplative, sensitive guy-talk that guys in real life have, like, never, while Cindy's old and wise Gramma offers her the usual quotable soundbites about life and love.  What finally drives Cindy to marry Dean is an unpleasant abortion scene, which itself is aborted by a reluctant Cindy who then reluctantly consents to tie the knot.  Since we already know how ill-fated this marriage is, the whole thing's a downer anyway.

Shot in an informal semi-doc style, BLUE VALENTINE just sort of mopes along from one depressing situation to the next, alternating between Dean and Cindy's sappy love story and the advanced stages of their bitter breakup.  Cindy's iceberg attitude toward Dean is never adequately explained beyond the fact of her free-floating discontent (and vague "grass-is-greener" memories of the dickweed she was banging before she met Dean), with her extreme coldness during their unsuccessful attempt at lovemaking in the "Future Room" coming off as particularly unpleasant.

Dean, on the other hand, is a doormat whose love for Cindy is like a debilitating infection spreading from his heart to his brain.  The scene in which he drunkenly bursts into the clinic where Cindy works and wrecks the place has some dramatic oomph, but after that comes a weepy denouement which doesn't really go anywhere and leaves us with little understanding of these characters or why we've just suffered through all of this unresolved conflict with them.

The DVD from Anchor Bay is in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and subtitles in English and Spanish.  Extras include a commentary with the director and his co-editor Jim Helton, the featurette "The Making of Blue Valentine", a "home movie" by Gosling, Williams, and their onscreen daughter Faith Wladyka, and some deleted scenes consisting of several minutes of further improv by Gosling and Williams.

BLUE VALENTINE is the kind of relationship flick that separates people into two distinct camps.   Either you're one of those hardy viewers whose temperament allows them to settle in and enjoy this sort of meandering mopefest, or the morose antics of Cindy and Dean will have you grabbing for the remote as your eyes glaze over and clicking away for dear life.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS -- Movie Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 8/31/16

With 1991's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, Anthony Hopkins burst onto the horror film scene with a Hannibal Lecter whose rich theatricality and giddy delight in his own unfathomable evil captured the imaginations of filmgoers, including many in the mainstream, like few such characters before or since.

Approaching his dark, Gothic lair in the bowels of a castle-like hospital for the criminally insane where he lurks like some medieval gargoyle, we share the trepidation of the young FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) who has been sent to consult with Lecter regarding another serial killer on the loose (known as "Buffalo Bill" due to his penchant for skinning his victims).

Hopkins plays Lecter to the hilt, relishing each perverse aspect of the character just as Lecter enjoyed feasting upon the organs of those he killed--sometimes with "fava beans and a nice Chianti...fthfthfthfth!"

His version of the silken-voiced psycho, unlike that of MANHUNTER's equally fine Brian Cox, is a creation that would fit comfortably in any rogue's gallery of horror film icons.

One of the pleasures of this film is watching him toy with the callow Starling (excellently portrayed by Foster) on a purely emotional and intellectual level in which she has no defense, then growing to admire her courage, convictions, and strength of will.

Also unlike the Lecter of MANHUNTER, we get to see this monster at his full power once he's broken free in a terrifying sequence that is beautifully-directed by Jonathan Demme. When Lecter's brilliant escape plan goes into motion, it's a thrill to watch Hopkins turn into one of the most cunning and terrifying killers the screen has ever known.

Compared to his mad-dog antics, the film's wrap-up of the Buffalo Bill story is almost anti-climactic, although Demme does stage a nailbiting finale with Starling taking on the killer by herself in his pitch-dark cellar of death.

Still, Bill delivers a line to one of his captives that has since become one of the most oft-heard quotes in recent film history: "It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again." And his naked dance will become seared in your memory whether you like it or not.

With a level of excellence that garnered it Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Director, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS remains one of the finest and most popular horror films ever made.

THE GRADUATE -- Movie Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 4/24/21

Currently rewatching: THE GRADUATE (1967). Finally got this on DVD.

This is the story of a confused young college graduate named Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman in his star-making performance) who is taken advantage of by a sexually frustrated upper-class wife named Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft).

Benjamin's sordid affair with her lasts until her daughter Elaine (Katherine Ross) comes home from college for a visit and Benjamin falls in love with her.

Livid at the thought of him with her daughter, Mrs. Robinson then does her best to drive them apart and ruin Benjamin's life, even planning a quickie marriage for Elaine that Benjamin races against the clock to stop before it's too late.

My big sister took me to the drive-in to see this when it came out. She was always taking me to movies that were "Suggested For Mature Audiences" (there was no rating system yet) which gave me a head start on my cinematic education.

When I bought my very first VCR in 1981 there were no video stores in town yet, but the appliance dealer had a small shelf of movies on videotape (an novel and exciting concept) and gave me two free rentals.

I rented "Where's Poppa?" and "The Graduate." The latter was the very first thing I ever showed on a TV after I hooked up my new VCR.

It's still one of the most brilliantly written, directed, and acted comedy-dramas of all time.

Hilarious, yet deeply moving, it's a prime example of the exciting and wildly innovative new kind of cinema--both technically and thematically--that was being created by pioneer filmmakers in the late 60s.

Simon and Garfunkel's now-classic songs "Sounds of Silence" and "Scarborough Fair" accentuate the film's moments of melancholy and introspection, while the jaunty "Mrs. Robinson" fuels Benjamin's frantic search for Elaine during the breakneck finale.

The last 20 minutes or so of the movie in particular are simply dazzling, building to a suspenseful and somewhat shocking ending that still leaves the viewer breathless and disoriented.

Director Mike Nichols was the comedy partner of the equally brilliant Elaine May, who wrote, directed, and starred in another of my all-time favorite comedies, A NEW LEAF. They were quite a creative team.

One of the best films of the 60s or any era, THE GRADUATE is a must-see that's just as fresh now as the day it was released.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY -- Movie Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 4/20/21

Currently rewatching: MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969). The only X-rated film ever to win Best Picture (it was later reduced to an R).

The two great lead performances consist of Dustin Hoffman as skid row denizen "Ratso" Rizzo and Jon Voight as a naive Texas stud named Joe Buck who thinks he can make money hustling rich New York matrons who are "just beggin' for it."

Rarely has this sort of life been portrayed in such a bleak and desolate manner as the two unlikely friends struggle to scrape up a meager buck while living in a condemned building.

Joe's prospects grow dimmer every day, forcing him to engage in the lowest forms of prostitution, while Ratso's physical deterioration mirrors that of their increasingly hopeless living conditions.

John Schlesinger's creative direction and the sometimes free-form editing are amazingly, deliriously experimental.

Flashbacks, fantasies, and delusions often combine to turn the narrative into a fever dream that's alternately humorous (Ratso's fantasies of a sunbaked life in Florida) and frightening (Joe's garbled memories of childhood sexual and emotional confusion and warped romantic encounters).

Yet the funny, perversely sentimental, and at times achingly tragic story always remains grounded and strong, leading to a heartrending and overwhelmingly sad ending that is rendered for maximum effect with the skill of a virtuoso by director Schlesinger.

The supporting cast includes Brenda Vaccaro, Barnard Hughes, John McGiver, Sylvia Miles, and Bob Balaban. A dizzying party sequence features some familiar names associated with Andy Warhol and the New York avant garde scene.

I hadn't seen MIDNIGHT COWBOY for quite some time before revisiting it just now, and what I vaguely remembered as a "sad" ending hit me full force this time and I cried pretty much all the way through the closing credits. Some of the most innovative and creatively self-assured films ever made came out of the late 60s, and this is one of the best.

Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize Winning Writer John Patrick Shanley to Write and Direct "THE TWINKLE BROTHERS" For Rivulet Media

ACADEMY AWARD AND PULITZER PRIZE WINNING WRITER JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY TO WRITE AND DIRECT

“THE TWINKLE BROTHERS” FOR RIVULET MEDIA

LOS ANGELES (February 17, 2021) – Rivulet Media announced today that Academy Award® and Pulitzer Prize winning writer John Patrick Shanley will write and direct the upcoming comedy The Twinkle Brothers.  Rivulet Films will produce with recently named President Rob Paris taking the lead.  Casting is underway with filming to begin in New York this fall.

The Twinkle Brothers is a tale told by avuncular café owner Mordecai who, when tasked with the responsibility of looking after his precocious six-year old granddaughter Rita for an afternoon, spins her a yarn about Freddie and Miguel, two insanely competitive brothers from Puerto Rico who come to New York and end up with competing restaurants directly across the street from one another.  The brothers stop at nothing to be the best on the block, ratcheting up the competition to the delight of their neighbors who are treated to bizarrely spectacular light shows, dueling Santas and seemingly endless plates of delicious and comforting food.

Shanley is a playwright, screenwriter and director whose original screenplay, Moonstruck, won the Academy Award for ‘Best Original Screenplay.’ Distributed by MGM, Moonstruck stars Cher and Nicolas Cage and was directed by Norman Jewison.  Shanley also wrote and directed Miramax’s Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominated Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis and was based on his Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning play “Doubt, A Parable.”  Most recently, Shanley wrote and directed Bleecker Street’s Wild Mountain Thyme, an adaption of his play “Outside Mullingar,” starring Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan, Jon Hamm and Christopher Walken.

The Twinkle Brothers reunites Shanley with Paris, who previously served as Shanley’s agent during his tenure at CAA.  Said Paris, “I so desperately missed speaking with John every day that I stalked him until he agreed to let me be a part of this film.  I cannot wait to get started.”  Shanley is represented by CAA and attorney Harrold Brown.

Rivulet Media (RIVU) is a publicly traded company with Mike Witherill and Arizona real estate investor Aaron Klusman serving as COO and CEO respectively. Veteran producer Rob Paris serves as President of Rivulet Media’s film division, which is backed by a consortium of investors led by early Peloton backer Larry Silver. The company recently wrapped production back-to-back features Please Baby Please starring Andrea Riseborough and Demi Moore and The Mistress starring John Magaro and Chasten Harmon.

Bong Joon Ho's Academy-Award Winning "PARASITE", "MEMORIES OF MURDER" To Join The Criterion Collection

BONG JOON HO'S ACADEMY-AWARD WINNING "PARASITE", "MEMORIES OF MURDER" TO JOIN THE CRITERION COLLECTION

JOINS PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED "PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE"

New York, NY (February 13, 2020) – NEON and the Criterion Collection are excited to announce that Criterion will issue special editions of two Bong Joon Ho masterpieces, the four-time Academy Award-winning Parasite and the breathtaking crime drama Memories of Murder. Parasite just made history as the first foreign language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, and the first Korean film to win Best Director, Best International Film, and Best Original Screenplay. Parasite was also Nominated for Best Production Design and Best Editing, and previously won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

Bong Joon Ho brings his singular mastery home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale. The film is set amidst the two families, the Parks, the picture of aspirational wealth, and the Kims, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. By turns darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching, Parasite showcases a modern master at the top of his game.

Caren Pistorius Snags Starring Role Opposite Academy Award Winner Russell Crowe in Solstice Studios’ "UNHINGED"

CAREN PISTORIUS SNAGS STARRING ROLE OPPOSITE ACADEMY AWARD WINNER RUSSELL CROWE IN SOLSTICE STUDIOS’

"UNHINGED"

Production Starts July 16

LOS ANGELES (July 15, 2019) Caren Pistorius has landed the lead role opposite Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe in Unhinged, the psychological thriller from Solstice Studios, which starts production July 16 in New Orleans.  The film is directed by Derrick Borte (American Dreamer), written by Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia, Red Eye) and produced by Lisa Ellzey (Warrior, Kingdom of Heaven).

Unhinged takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of Rachel (Pistorius), a mother who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy (Crowe). "Road rage" doesn't begin to describe what he's about to do to her and everyone she knows.  Solstice is targeting a third quarter 2020 wide U.S. theatrical release.

Pistorius was most recently seen in Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines and co-starred with Julianne Moore in Gloria Bell.  Prior to that she received critical acclaim starring alongside Michael Fassbender in Slow West.  Pistorius is repped by CAA and RGM in Australia.

“Caren has that magical thing seen in all great actresses, you just believe she’s inhabiting the skin of the character she’s playing.” said Crowe. “Derrick went through a long casting process that culminated in an old school audition with both of us in the room. She claimed that audition in a definitive way. I know she’s been working a long time and has some great credits, but casting Caren still feels like we’ve made a discovery. It’s exciting.”

Solstice Studios is an independent movie company based in Los Angeles, founded in October 2018. The firm develops, fully finances, produces, sells internationally and distributes feature films in the U.S. on a wide-release basis.  Solstice plans to produce 3-5 movies per year for a global audience—generally in the $20-80M budget range.  It also plans to co-finance or acquire another 2-3 films per year for wide US distribution.  The company has a partnership with Ingenious Media.

The Solstice team has a $5 billion production track record and is expected to grow to 65 people in its first year. The company’s founders are: President & CEO Mark Gill, Production Heads Andrew Gunn and Guy Botham, and Marketing/Strategy Head Vincent Bruzzese. The senior team also includes Acquisitions & International Head Crystal Bourbeau; Business & Legal Affairs Head Karen Barna, Chief Financial Officer Shaun Williams, and Physical Production Head Rene Besson.

Mirror POV Trick in "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" (Fredric March, 1932) (video)

How do you shoot a POV mirror shot without showing the camera?

The camera lens represents Dr. Henry Jekyll's first-person point of view.
The "mirror" is actually a clear-glass window in the wall.

On cue, Fredric March (Jekyll) approaches it from the far side...
...in a reverse-duplicate room.
Then his butler Poole (Edgar Norton) joins him in the mirror-room "reflection."

Later, the same window technique is used to give us another POV "mirror" view of Jekyll...
...and then, of his savage alter-ego, Hyde.

“KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS” (Focus Features) – Nominee, Best Animated Feature Film – Academy Awards

"I’m over the moon!  An Academy Award nomination is an extraordinary and cherished gift.  Two nominations is more than anyone could hope for.  Every filmmaker dreams of a moment like this.  But the truth is, I already lived my dream by making this film. Movies have always given me great joy. They enriched my life.  They inspired me to dream.  That’s the kind of film our team at LAIKA sought to make with KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS.  A film is a slice of a hundred souls.  In this case many more.  An incredible, immense community of artists gave ceaselessly and selflessly to breathe life into this story.  I’m so thankful for their talents and efforts and so proud of what we've done together.  I’m profoundly grateful to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who somehow saw fit to include us among the finest storytellers in film.  It is a tremendous honor to stand alongside them." – Travis Knight, Academy Award nominee as director and producer of KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, Best Animated Feature Film

STEVE EMERSON, OLIVER JONES, BRIAN MCLEAN & BRAD SCHIFF – "KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS" (Focus Features) - Nominees, Achievement in Visual Effects – Academy Awards

“As much as Kubo and the Two Strings is an homage to Japanese culture and to woodblock artists including Kiyoshi Saito, it is also a tribute to special effects pioneers Ray Harryhausen, Willis O'Brien, Jim Danforth, and the many innovative FX artists who tell stories using in-camera effects, puppets, and human hands. We're thrilled for the artists at LAIKA who put years into realizing Kubo. For all of us at the studio, being recognized alongside such distinguished and talented members of the VFX community is truly an honor.” – Steve Emerson, Oliver Jones, Brian McLean & Brad Schiff, Academy Award nominees for Achievement in Visual Effects (KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS)
