"She's Allergic to Cats" Takes a Trip on VOD April 7th

A Lowly Dog Groomer Descends Into Surreal Chaos

Festival Favorite Fever Dream Available Nationwide

"sincerely bizarre but somehow still incredibly heartfelt" -- RogerEbert.com"funny and confounding and adorable and gross all at once" -- Birth.Movies.Death

Los Angeles, CA - Giant Pictures has announced the long-awaited Digital HD launch of writer/director Michael Reich's semi-autobiographical experimental comedy She's Allergic to Cats.

She's Allergic to Cats will be available to rent or own April 7th on Amazon Prime Video and iTunes.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

She's Allergic to Cats is the debut feature from music video director Michael Reich.  The film is based in large part on his own experiences of life in Los Angeles. Reich spent years grooming dogs, documenting the underground punk scene, directing music videos for My Chemical Romance, The Shins, Bad Religion and Ryan Adams, as well as appearing as a body double for the gold robot in Daft Punk.

The film was produced by his longtime collaborator turned lead actor Mike Pinkney and veteran genre producer Andrew van den Houten (The Ranger, Sadistic Intentions).  She's Allergic to Cats co-stars Sonja Kinski (latest member of the Kinski acting dynasty) and Flula Borg ("Conan", James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

Mike Pinkney stars as Michael Pinkney, a stifled creative artist eeking out a living in Hollywood as a dog groomer.  When the girl of his dreams (Sonja Kinski) walks into his shop, he falls down a rabbit hole filled with surrealist detours and melancholic absurdity.

She's Allergic to Cats had its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival, where the festival's co-director Mitch Davis hailed it as an intoxicatingly insane breath-of-fresh-air.

The film went on to screen around the world at the Oldenburg International Film Festival, Vienna's /slash Filmfestival, Sydney Underground Film Festival, GenreBlast, WhatTheFilm Fest, and Ithaca Fantastik, where it took home the award for Best Film.

Michael Pinkney (Pinkney) is a dog groomer living in a rat-infested Hollywood dive with dreams of a bigger creative life.  His current ambition is to raise funding for an all-cat remake of Carrie.  At home he makes what he refers to as "weird video art that nobody wants to watch".

One day on the job, he meets Cora (Kinski) the girl of his dreams.  "When you're cutting their nails, is it supposed to bleed that much?", she asks, as he stares at her lovingly.  Easily distracted, creatively in knots and now in some sort of love, Michael's about to embark on a whole new dangerous trip.

“INSIDE THE RAIN”

TO BE RELEASED DIGITALLY ON TVOD, SVOD AND AVOD IMMEDIATELY AS A RESULT OF THEATER SHUT DOWN

Award Winning Romantic Comedy Loosely Based on Director-Writer Aaron Fisher’s Experiences Living with Bipolar Disorder

Number One per Theater Average in the US during its Opening Weekend

New York, NY -- March 24, 2020 – Act 13 has announced today that it will be bringing the indie film INSIDE THE RAIN to people’s homes via numerous TVOD, AVOD and SVOD platforms on an immediate basis.

Following its exclusive NYC engagement on March 13th - where it grossed the highest per theater average in the US for the weekend - INSIDE THE RAIN was booked in theaters in the top 40 US markets, including AMC Theatres and Regal, just as theaters shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

Official Website: www.insidetherainmovie.com

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InsidetheRainMovie/

In an unusual move, the producers of the film are arranging for viewers to watch their choice of transactional, subscription or free (ad-supported) services commencing as soon as services can ingest the content, expected to be within the coming days.  Platforms expected to offer the film include iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft, Prime Video, Pluto TV, Tubi, Crackle, Vudu, Sling TV, Stirr, Xumo and many others.

Aaron Fisher, director, writer and star of INSIDE THE RAIN states, “We have been so touched by the outpouring of people waiting to see this film. What is important to us is that these audiences who have been so eager to watch the film are able to do so – either via transactional, subscription, or free ad-supported platforms.”

The award-winning movie centers on bipolar college student, Ben Glass, (Aaron Fisher) who is expelled from school and determined to prove his innocence with the help of a moonlighting sex worker, he meets Emma Taylor, (Ellen Toland). The film also stars Rosie Perez, Eric Roberts, Catherine Curtin and Paul Schulze. Although INSIDE THE RAIN is a work of fiction, Fisher, who suffers from bipolar disorder, took the last 10 years of his life and infused his own experiences into this 90- minute movie.

INSIDE THE RAIN received excellent critical reviews and is rated 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.  “Variety calls “INSIDE THE RAIN” “fresh and audacious,” the New York Times said ‘Inside The Rain’ switches erratically between comedy and drama…the movie’s strange, inconsistent rhythm ultimately works as a reflection of Ben’s manic and depressive states,” and San Francisco Chronicle calls the film an “Assured, offbeat comedy. Aaron Fisher shines both behind and in front of the camera.”

In addition to U.S. streaming, the film will be available to stream internationally in territories includingCanada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Italy, with more territories planned.

Synopsis
College film student Benjamin Glass (played by writer-director Aaron Fisher) has it all: ADHD, OCD, borderline personality. And he’s also bipolar. But Glass is more than his diagnoses - he prefers the term “recklessly extravagant” - and he’s determined to prove his genius. When a misunderstanding threatens to expel him from college, Glass pushes back; he plans on recreating the incident on video with the help of a moonlighting sex worker (Ellen Toland), to clear his name. But how will he raise the money for the film, when his parents dismiss the scheme as another manic episode?

INSIDE THE RAIN is a wincingly funny rom-com-drama, anchored by off- kilter performances by co-stars Fisher and Toland. The colorful ensemble cast includes Rosie Perez as a tough love shrink, Eric Roberts as an unhinged film producer, and Catherine Curtin and Paul Schulze as the long-suffering parents. The ultimate underdog film and proof that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible.

INSIDE THE RAIN is produced by George LaVoo and presented by Act 13 in association with Killer Films. It is executive produced by Christine Vachon, Danny Fisher and Javier Gonzalez. The director of photography is Josh Fisher.

Classic Cult Film "FIST OF FEAR" Restored For 40th Anniversary - On Blu-ray/DVD March 31

Blaxploitation? No, Bruceploitation!

The Film Detective Presents 40th Anniversary Edition of the Cult Classic "Fist of Fear, Touch of Death" on Blu-ray & DVD

Collector’s Set 4K Restoration With Exclusive Special Features

(With Blood-Red, Blu-ray Case), Available March 31st

ROCKPORT, Mass. — March 26, 2020 — For Immediate Release — The Film Detective (TFD), a leading classic media streaming network and film archive that restores classic films for today's cord-cutters, is proud to announce the 40th anniversary edition of the cult classic Fist of Fear, Touch of Death in a special collector’s set.First presented in 1980 by veteran distributor and producer Terry Levene and director Matthew Mallinson, the action-packed Fist of Fear, Touch of Death premiered as one of the final pieces of the Bruceploitation era.

A subgenre of 1970s cinema, Bruceploitation clung to the box office success of the Bruce Lee legacy after the star’s untimely demise in 1973, utilizing Lee lookalikes and archival footage from the legend himself. Carving a niche within the grindhouse market, Bruceploitation not only appealed to fans of the day, but has generated a cult status in recent years.

True to Bruceploitation fashion, Fist of Fear, Touch of Death features eye-popping combat scenes viewers will have to see to believe, putting the 1979 World Karate Championship at center stage, where martial artists take their shot at eliminating the competition and claiming the title of “successor to the Bruce Lee legacy.”

Using mockumentary-style interviews in the film, hosted by Academy Award-nominee Adolph Caesar, martial arts masters Fred Williamson and Ron Van Clief, among others, emerge from every corner of the martial arts world to give their take on whether any competitor can be deemed worthy of the Bruce Lee legacy.

Lee himself receives top billing in the film, appearing in archival footage dubbed “The Bruce Lee Story,” a chronicle of Lee’s early years partially taken from the 1957 film, Thunderstorm. In the film, a Kung Fu move known as the “Touch of Death” shrouds Lee’s untimely demise in mystery, before returning to the World Karate Championship to watch the new victor claim the title.

Said the film’s star, Fred Williamson, “It was never meant to be a serious martial arts movie. It’s a comedy and satire … a bad movie that was good. Why was it good? It was entertaining, which is, after all, why you make a movie.”

Said Phil Hopkins, founder of The Film Detective, “We are excited to be giving Fist of Fear, Touch of Death the restoration it deserves in honor of its 40th year. Fans of Quentin Tarantino’s recent tribute to Hollywood’s Golden Age, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, are sure to appreciate this grindhouse classic and new, never-before-seen special features.”

A drive-in circuit sensation in 1980, this special 40th anniversary collector’s set is guaranteed to pack a punch with audiences, featuring a blood-red, Blu-ray case and a stunning 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative under exclusive license from the film’s original producers at Aquarius Releasing, Inc.

EXCLUSIVE SPECIAL FEATURES: Stars Fred Williamson and Ron Van Clief are reunited for interviews, masterfully produced by Prince Henry Entertainment Group founder Frazier Prince; and producer Terry Levene, director Matthew Mallinson and scriptwriter Ron Harvey give their behind-the-camera take on the film in new interviews conducted by producer and editor Jim Markovic as part of an exclusive, 30-minute featurette, That’s Bruceploitation, by Daniel Griffith from Ballyhoo Motion Pictures. Limited-edition Blu-ray copies will feature a special liner note booklet written by Justin Decloux and Will Sloan, hosts of The Important Cinema Club podcast.

Fist of Fear, Touch of Death is available for purchase on The Film Detective website March 31 in a limited-edition Blu-ray ($24.99) or on DVD ($19.99). With a limited pressing of just 1,500 Blu-rays, this exclusive deal won’t last long. Fans can secure a copy by pre-ordering, beginning March 3, at www.thefilmdetective.com/fist-of-fear

NEON Acquires Worldwide Rights to Amy Seimetz’s SXSW Critical Sensation "SHE DIES TOMORROW"

NEON Acquires Worldwide Rights to Amy Seimetz’s SXSW Critical Sensation "SHE DIES TOMORROW"

NEW YORK, NY | March 25, 2020 – NEON announced today that they have acquired worldwide rights to Amy Seimetz’s apocalyptic existential thriller SHE DIES TOMORROW, an official selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival. Inadvertently prescient and blazingly original, the film was one of the most buzzed-about titles coming out of this year’s festival-that-never-was.

SHE DIES TOMORROW stars Seimetz’s frequent collaborator Kate Lyn Sheil (SUN DON’T SHINE) as Amy, a woman ravaged by the notion that she is going to die tomorrow which sends her down a dizzying emotional spiral. When Amy’s skeptical friend Jane (Jane Adams, HAPPINESS) discovers Amy’s feeling of imminent death to be contagious, they both begin bizarre journeys through what might be the last day of their lives. In equal measures a genre film, a dark comedy, and surrealist mind trip, SHE DIES TOMORROW defies definition and is the unique vision of Seimetz (SUN DON’T SHINE, “The Girlfriend Experience”).

SHE DIES TOMORROW had critics under its spell following screenings of the film, with Indiewire’s Eric Kohn noting that the film “combines classic David Cronenberg body horror and with the scathing surrealism of Luis Buñuel,” Screen Daily’s Tim Grierson calling the film “an enigmatic drama that flirts with psychological horror and absurdist comedy,” and RogerEbert.com’s Brian Tallerico praising the film as “brilliant, riveting,” among many other laudatory remarks from press.

NEON stated, “Amy Seimetz is a bold new voice and with the groundbreaking SHE DIES TOMORROW has easily created one of the most prescient films of the decade.  We’re thrilled to be able to bring this unique and incredible SXSW premiere to audiences all around the world.”

"I'm very proud to be joining the illustrious NEON family. Tom Quinn has impeccable taste and has also been at the forefront of innovative theatrical and digital distribution for many years. I look forward to collaborating with him and the entire NEON team on sharing SHE DIES TOMORROW with the world."

SHE DIES TOMORROW is Amy Seimetz' second feature film as a writer-director. SUN DON'T SHINE, her directorial debut, premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2012, and was nominated for two Gotham Awards. In 2015, Seimetz co-created and executive produced the critically acclaimed Starz series "The Girlfriend Experience." Among her other television work, Seimetz directed two episodes of the acclaimed FX series "Atlanta" in 2018.

SHE DIES TOMORROW is produced by Seimetz and Rustic Films’ trio David Lawson Jr., Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.  The film co-stars Kentucker Audley (SUN DON’T SHINE) and features cameo appearances by Chris Messina (ARGO), Katie Aselton (THE GIFT), Tunde Adebimpe (RACHEL GETTING MARRIED), Jennifer Kim (BLACK BEAR), Josh Lucas (FORD V FERRARI), Olivia Taylor Dudley (“The Magicians”), and Michelle Rodriguez (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS).

Jeff Deutchman negotiated the deal for NEON with XYZ Films’ Pip Ngo, on behalf of the filmmakers.  SHE DIES TOMORROW will be released by NEON, with release plans to be announced at a later date.

About NEON

A little less than 3 years since inception, NEON has garnered 12 Oscar nominations and grossed over $150M at the Box Office. It continues to push boundaries and take creative risks on bold cinema such as Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, which made history winning four Academy Awards®, becoming the first non-English-language film to claim Best Picture. The film, which also unanimously won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, has amassed over $53M at the domestic box office and broke multiple records including highest per screen average of the year and highest per screen average for a foreign language film of all time. Other noteworthy NEON releases include: Double Oscar nominee Honeyland; Todd Douglas Miller’s Apollo 11, 2019's highest grossing documentary with a worldwide gross of $16M; Tim Wardle's Three Identical Strangers, winner of the Sundance Special Jury Award for Storytelling which surpassed $13M at the box office; and Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya, which garnered multiple Academy Award® nominations, one win for Allison Janney and amassed over $30M in domestic box office.

The company continues to be an impressive force at festivals, with recent acquisitions such as Max Barbakow’s sought after Palm Springs starring Andy Samberg, which NEON acquired with Hulu, Josephine Decker’s Shirley starring Elisabeth Moss, and the documentary Gunda directed by Viktor Kossakovsky and executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix.   Recent releases include: the critically acclaimed Cannes hit Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes® and Independent Spirit Awards; Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov’s award-winning and record-breaking Honeyland, which is the first non-fiction feature to land Academy Award® nominations for Best Documentary and Best International Feature Film in the same year; Alejandro Landes’ cinematic thriller Monos (the Colombian selection for the Academy Awards®); Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz‘s horror film The Lodge starring Riley Keough; Julius Onah’s Luce starring Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer; Tom Harper’s Wild Rose starring Jessie Buckley; John Chester’s The Biggest Little Farm; Chinonye Chukwu’s Clemency starring Academy Award® Nominee Alfre Woodard; and the electrifying documentary about Aretha Franklin, Amazing Grace.

After their successful collaboration on I, Tonya in January 2018, 30WEST (Dan Friedkin's and Micah Green's strategic venture) partnered with NEON's Tom Quinn (Founder & CEO) and Tim League (Co-Founder) to become majority investors in the company.

SCREAM QUEEN -- DVD Review by Porfle

Writer-director Tatiana Bliss' SCREAM QUEEN (Indican Pictures, 2005) doesn't try to be an in-depth, definitive portrait of a horror actress and her trials and travails in both the movie business and fandom at large.

While touching fleetingly on such concerns, it's mainly just a lightweight comedy with all of that stuff serving as a backdrop for both farcical situations and awkward attempts at something more heartfelt.

Liz Lavoie plays Dana Lewis, the titular scream queen who's tired of shrieking her way through the usual gore/zombie/serial killer flicks and starts trying to break into the upper levels of the acting business where they hand out gold statuettes.

Bliss takes a few stabs here and there about how poor, put-upon horror actresses are taken advantage of by sleazy male producers and directors, how they're seen as sex objects who can't really act (not always an incorrect assessment), how drugs and alcohol seem to force their way down their throats, and various other boo-hoo stuff meant to give the story more heft.

But it's basically just a straightforward comedy in which she ends up in the desert making an ultra cheapo horror flick with some of her most obsessive fanboys turned filmmakers armed with a digital video camera and no budget.

Lavoie gets to play Dana in constant hyperactive freakout mode as she finds herself surrounded by weirdos (a guy whose significant other is a blow-up doll, a brain-fried trailer couple who cook meth in addition to feeding the crew, a standard "religious fanatic" and her emotionally stunted daughter, and various other overly-agitated characters), not to mention a novice director (Nipper Knapp as "Jason") with a growing, and unwelcome, romantic attachment to her.

The screenplay veers between abject silliness and small pockets of semi-seriousness, as Dana gradually warms up to her co-workers and discovers that winning bigtime acting awards may not be as important as simple human interaction on a warmly intimate level.

This, unfortunately, goes awry when she suddenly gets a chance to chuck her newfound friends (including a budding romance with Jason) in favor of a chance at real stardom.

Production values are bargain basement quality but the film never pretends otherwise.  In fact, the slapdash nature of the whole thing adds to a certain breeziness that gets us through a few less-than-inspired passages in what is basically a pretty familiar story.

A bit amateurish and insubstantial, SCREAM QUEEN is, at its best, a pleasantly amusing timewaster that's interesting mainly because it's a no-budget exploitation movie about people making a no-budget exploitation movie.

"ON THE TRAIL OF UFOS" Contacts New Trailer Ahead of Release -- See It HERE!

Small Town Monsters Examines Extraterrestrial Contact in New Miniseries

"On the Trail of UFOs" to Release March 20th

Series Set to Explore America's Complicated Relationship with UFOs
Final Trailer Drops Ahead of Release

Wadsworth, OH -- Small Town Monsters has announced the March 20th Blu-ray/DVD, Amazon and Vimeo release of their new miniseries "On the Trail of UFOs".  The final trailer for the series gives viewers a glimpse into the astonishing numbers of locations and mind-bending interviews documented.

The latest production from Small Town Media founder and director Seth Breedlove, "On the Trail of UFOs" takes an in-depth look at the current state of unidentified flying objects, and America's continuously-evolving relationship with the subject.

With unidentified flying objects being written and talked about in major news outlets and behind closed doors in Washington D.C., Breedlove and series host Shannon Legro set out to document what is by far the most tumultuous point in the history of "flying saucers".

WATCH THE TRAILER:

The series objective was to follow investigator Shannon LeGro as she scours the United States in search of clues to the origins of the unidentified flying objects. LeGro and crew filmed in fourteen different states across America in an effort to meet and speak with witnesses, investigators, skeptics and even folklorists while documenting their findings.

Episodes focus on all aspects of the mystery; from purported alien abductions to the recent "Storm Area 51" event that grabbed international headlines. Nearly thirty interviews were conducted with people who have claimed to either see a UFO (in some cases on multiple occasions) or who go in search of them.

"On the Trail of UFOs" takes viewers from the gates of Area 51 itself, to the snow-capped White Mountains of New Hampshire. Filming took place across the United States, including New York City, Phoenix, Sedona, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Las Vegas. The team interviewed numerous witnesses and investigators of unknown aerial phenomena, including those who claim to have been abducted and experimented upon by real aliens. No stone was left unturned in putting together what Breedlove believes to be the most comprehensive look at the subject ever filmed.

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel of the same name, The Outsider is a new drama series that follows a seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy. When 11-year-old Frankie Peterson’s body is found mutilated in the Georgia woods, police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) sets out to investigate – with eyewitnesses and physical evidence pointing to Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), a popular high school teacher, Little League coach, doting husband and father.

While the case appears ironclad, Ralph is baffled by the emergence of contradictory evidence that places his suspect in a neighboring city at the time of the murder. The mysterious set of circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, a seasoned cop still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.

“The Outsider is not just for Stephen King fans, as there is something for everyone in this captivating series,” said Rosemary Markson, WBHE Senior Vice President, Television Marketing. “The series has mesmerized audiences through its incredibly talented actors, thrilling plot twists, and true to life themes of grief and trauma, which will keep you glued to the screen until its electrifying climax.”

The Outsider is produced by Mendelsohn and executive producer Bateman (who also directs the first two episodes). The series is written for television by Richard Price (The Wire, The Night Of), who also serves as Executive Producer. Executive producers include Andrew Bernstein, Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment, Jack Bender, Michael Costigan for Aggregate Films, and Dennis Lehane (episodes 105-110). WHISKY GALORE! & THE MAGGIE -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

(WHISKY GALORE! & THE MAGGIE is a 2-disc set from Film Movement Classics, available in both Blu-ray and DVD.)

WHISKEY GALORE! (1949)

From Ealing Studios, who produced a number of beloved post-WWII British comedies about small, closely-knit rural communities facing adversary in endearingly humorous ways, comes the gleefully booze-soaked entry WHISKEY GALORE! (Film Movement Classics, 1949).

Loosely based on a true story, it's about a small Scottish isle that has run out of whiskey, to the profound consternation of its citizenry who are getting drier, and thirstier, by the minute.

As the pub collects dust bunnies, we get to know the (mostly) likable villagers including George Campbell (a very young Gordon Jackson of THE GREAT ESCAPE) who's so dominated by his stern mother that even his local militia officer can't override her banishment of George to his room for announcing his engagement to what mother considers to be the wrong girl.

The stiff-necked officer himself, Captain Paul Waggett (Basil Radford), has a fit when he learns that a cargo ship carrying thousands of cases of whisky has wrecked just offshore and that the townspeople have relieved it of a few tons of the stuff and stored it away somewhere.

Needless to say, the whole town gets a lot happier real quick while Captain Waggett fumes and plots to locate and confiscate the potent contraband.

With its folksy cast of characters, including the lovely Joan Greenwood (KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, THE MOON-SPINNERS, FRENZY) and other familiar faces of the era, WHISKY GALORE! has a downhome, countrified appeal that makes it a pleasant place for the viewer to hang out for awhile.

This is helped immeasurably by Ealing's usual eye-pleasing photography, done in a crisply austere black-and-white that has its own special aesthetic beauty and atmosphere.

In his debut effort, director Alexander Mackendrick (SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, THE LADYKILLERS, DON'T MAKE WAVES) makes the most of the subtle and not-so-subtle comedy potential of the screenplay by Angus MacPhail and the original novel's author Compton MacKenzie.

(An especially clever touch is to have the voiceover narrator sound progressively tipsy after the discovery of the whisky.)

Mackendrick also manages to make the later scenes in which Waggett and his men inexorably close in on the precious whisky play like a tensely-paced thriller (albeit in a deadpan comedy vein), keeping us in suspense as the villagers scramble to stay one step ahead of their dogged pursuers.

WHISKY GALORE!, like most Ealing comedies, has a knack for mixing feelgood sentiment and whimsy with a certain world-weary realism, with characters who haven't quite shaken off the hardships of a traumatic war. It's a fun story, and it's cathartic to experience their giddy delight when a little taste of heaven runs aground on their humble shore.

THE MAGGIE

The year 1954 saw England's Ealing Studios still doing what they did best, which was making sassy yet gently sentimental comedies celebrating traditional British values and the common man.

With THE MAGGIE, aka "High and Dry" (Film Movement Classics), they turned their attention to the humble coal-burning cargo boats known as "puffers" that made their way along the English coastlines and were often helmed by crusty old fellows who were born to the sea and made it their lives.

But the grizzled skipper of the "Maggie", Captain MacTaggart (Alex Mackenzie, KIDNAPPED, THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA) is about to lose his beloved puffer and the only way to keep it is to trick a wealthy American businessman named Calvin B. Marshall (Paul Douglas, A LETTER TO THREE WIVES, CLASH BY NIGHT, THE GAMMA PEOPLE) into hiring him to transport a boatload of valuable cargo by making him believe he owns the big, fancy vessel moored next to his.

This is just the spark that lights the fuse on roughly ninety minutes of dry, understated comedy--beginning with Marshall's comically harried assistant Mr. Pusey's attempts to retrieve the boat and cargo which somehow end him up in the slammer for poaching--mixed with some almost solemn scenes of the initially hostile Marshall eventually softening his attitude toward these well-meaning commoners after sharing some genuinely moving moments with them.

Till then, however, Paul Douglas' blustery performance is pitch perfect and entirely believable despite some pretty exaggerated situations during the Maggie's turbulent journey.  Mackenzie makes a likable skipper who ably conveys his love for his craft and his life on the sea, and among the sturdy performers playing his crew is a remarkable young actor, Tommy Kearins, as "Wee Boy", whose only desire is to be a skipper someday himself. (Look for a young Andrew Kier as a reporter.)

Those who love good black and white photography will find this well up to the usual Ealing standards, while Alexander Mackendrick (WHISKEY GALORE!, THE LADYKILLERS, DON'T MAKE WAVES) handles the direction with taste and skill.

Hardly a comedy designed for the ANIMAL HOUSE crowd, this is more like that old "Andy Griffith Show" episode about the impatient businessman who gets stranded in Mayberry and begrudingly begins to appreciate their simple, easygoing lifestyle.

Neither too raucous nor too maudlin, THE MAGGIE has a kind of tranquilizing, contemplative nostalgia as well as a gritty edge which keeps it relatably real.
