Risque' Lingerie Scene in "WHITE ZOMBIE" (1932) Madge Bellamy, Bela Lugosi (video)

Risque' Lingerie Scene in "WHITE ZOMBIE" (1932)
Madge Bellamy, Bela Lugosi

In "White Zombie", Madge Bellamy appears in a lingerie scene that is quite daring for 1932.

It's brief, but memorable.

Joan Crawford In Pre-Code Striptease Scene ("Dancing Lady", 1933) (video)

Joan plays a hoofer who wants to make it in showbiz...

...but her talent is currently confined to the burlesque stage.

And when the place is raided...

...the party's over for Joan and her fellow performers.

Saucy Pre-Code Banter In "Mystery Of the Wax Museum" (1933) (video)

Glenda Farrell is a delight as wisecracking girl reporter Florence Dempsey.

Frank McHugh is her long-suffering editor, who fires her at least once a day.

Fay Wray is Florence's beautiful roommate, a hopeless romantic.

And sometimes they get up to things that are just a bit, well, pre-code.

"Mystery of the Wax Museum" Unmasking Scene: Fay Wray, Lionel Atwill (1933) (video)

(spoilers)

This two-strip Technicolor classic was directed by Michael Curtiz...

...and was lost for many years before being rediscovered.

Lionel Atwill plays a madman who runs a wax museum...

...with figures made from dead bodies encased in wax.

The beautiful Fay Wray is his ideal Marie Antoinette...

...so he plans to give her the same treatment.

But not before she discovers his terrible secret.

Risque' Pre-Code Lesbian (?) Scene: "Millie" (1931) (video)

Before strict adherence to the Motion Picture Production Code in 1934...

...several pre-code films had implied gay and/or lesbian elements.

This scene is, to say the least, open to interpretation.

Pre-Code Seduction Scene From "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" (1931) (video)

Before strict adherence to the Motion Picture Production Code in 1934...

...pre-code films could get away with some rather suggestive material.

Case in point is this seduction scene between Fredric March and Miriam Hopkins...

...which, in just a few short years, would be unheard of on the screen.

Frank McHugh Shoots The Finger In 1933: "Parachute Jumper" (Pre-Code) (video)

People "shoot the finger" in movies these days, and nobody bats an eye.

But in 1933, it was definitely an eye-batting sight.

Later, strict enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code...

...would curtail such flagrant finger foolishness.

Actor Shoots The Finger in 1933: "Corruption" (Pre-Code) (video)

Something we expect to see in modern cinema, but not in 1933...

...is one character in a movie "shooting the finger" at another one.

A year later, strict enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code would soon put a stop to such shenanigans.

Song: "Sweet Marijuana" (1934) From Pre-Code Musical "Murder At The Vanities" (video)

The plot of this 1934 film concerns a murder investigation during a bawdy stage musical.

The film itself was released during the fabled Pre-Code era...

...shortly before the Hays Office would begin to crack down on screen immorality.

Hence, the inclusion of a song called "Sweet Marijuana"...

(sung by Gertrude Michael)

...and featuring a number of topless chorus girls.

Schnarzan The Conqueror!! (Jimmy Durante) From "Hollywood Party" (Pre-Code, 1934) (video)

In the pre-code comedy "Hollywood Party", Jimmy Durante...

...plays big screen jungle hero "Schnarzan the Conqueror!!"

Jungle Woman's naughty uncensored outfit is matched only by Durante's manic comic intensity.

This mock trailer is a delightfully lowbrow example of Old Hollywood making fun of itself.

Wildly Risque' 1933 Pre-Code Shower Scene: "Meet The Baron" (video)

Before the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 became seriously enforced around 1934...

...movies were getting away with an awful lot of naughty stuff, like this frothy semi-nude shower scene from 1933's "Meet the Baron."

Also appearing in the film--fully clothed, thank goodness--were Ted Healy & His Stooges and Jimmy Durante.
