In the early 1990s, the animated show Ren & Stimpy broke ratings records and was a touchstone for a generation of fans and artists.

Creator John Kricfalusi was celebrated as a visionary, but even though his personality suffused the show, dozens of artists and network executives were just as responsible for the show’s meteoric rise.

As Kricfalusi’s worst impulses were let loose at the workplace and new allegations about even more disturbing behavior have surfaced, his reputation now threatens to taint the show forever. The film is directed by Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood.

Bob Camp, Vincent Waller, Billy West, Chris Reccardi, Jim Gomez, Vanessa Coffey and more share their surprising insights into the true cost of creating a pop culture classic; what it's like capturing lighting in a bottle, and the overlooked secret to true artistic genius.

Saban Films Acquires Josh Duhamel's Directorial Debut "BUDDY GAMES"

SABAN FILMS ACQUIRES JOSH DUHAMEL’S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT “BUDDY GAMES”

LOS ANGELES (July 23, 2020) – Saban Films announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to Josh Duhamel’s writing and directing debut Buddy Games.  The comedy boasts an all-star ensemble cast including Duhamel (Transformers franchise, Love, Simon), Olivia Munn (Ocean’s Eight, X-Men: Apocalypse), Dax Shepard (CHIPS, Without a Paddle), Kevin Dillon (“Entourage,” Poseidon), James Roday (“Psych,” “A Million Little Things”), Nick Swardson (Sandy Wexler, Jack and Jill) and Dan Bakkedahl (“Veep,” “Life in Pieces”).  Michael J. Luisi (Fighting with My Family, The Call) produced alongside Duhamel and Jude Weng.

A group of friends reunite to play the Buddy Games, a wild assortment of absurd physical and mental challenges. In the process, they'll heal old wounds, right past wrongs and figure out the true meaning of friendship...or die trying.

“Josh Duhamel has created a laugh-out-loud comedy,” commented Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley.  “We are thrilled to be collaborating with him on his directorial debut, which is a fresh and daring achievement.”

“I set out to make a movie that I would want to see – something grounded but outrageous enough to shock audiences, and ultimately a story of friendship and camaraderie,” said Josh Duhamel. “I’m grateful to Saban Films for giving us the perfect platform for audiences to see it.”

Bill Bromiley and Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal for Saban Films along with attorney Matt Saver on behalf of the filmmakers. Buddy Games will be released by Saban Films, with plans to be announced at a later date.

Saban Films continues to grow its presence in the industry, remaining active in the acquisition, production and distribution space. The company’s successes have run the gamut from critically acclaimed theatrical films such as The Homesman starring Hilary Swank, to two of the biggest Fathom events with horror icon and heavy metal mastermind Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell last year and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the sequel to the 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which the company partnered on after coming onboard at script stage.

Its upcoming slate includes: Daniel Roby’s crime-thriller Most Wanted starring Antoine Olivier Pilon with Jim Gaffigan and Josh Hartnett; the Alicia Silverstone wedding comedy Sister of the Groom; Robin Pront’s crime thriller The Silencing starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Annabelle Wallis and Hero Fiennes Tiffin; Nicol Paone’s Friendsgiving with Malin Akerman, Christine Taylor, Jane Seymour, Kat Dennings and Chelsea Peretti; John Suits’ Breach starring Bruce Willis; Twist starring Michael Caine, Lena Headey and Rita Ora; and Jamie Babbit’s The Stand-In  with Drew Barrymore in a dual lead role.

THE SHADE SHEPHERD -- Movie Review by Porfle

I just got played. Big time. By a movie. A movie that I didn't think was going to be all that great, so I underestimated it, and let my guard down. And now, all I can say is...bravo.

Jack Ables (co-writer Jordon Hodges, SAND CASTLES, THE DARK KNIGHT) is a respected doctor whose wife Stacey (Caroline Newton, A PLACE IN HELL) is about to have a baby. Their relationship isn't perfect, but maybe with time they'll work things out.

Trouble is, Jack doesn't have that time right now, because his ne'er-do-well big brother Pike (Randy Spence, "Halt and Catch Fire", "Turn: Washington's Spies"), a heroin addict who's always in and out of trouble with the law, just woke up with a murder charge hanging over his head. He doesn't remember what happened, but chances are that won't matter much to the police.

THE SHADE SHEPHERD (Indican Pictures, 2019) is about Jack's decision to risk everything--his reputation, his marriage, his freedom, maybe even his life--by helping the luckless and now hunted brother escape to Canada.

Director Chris Faulisi (A PROPER VIOLENCE, SHIFT), handles the lean, tautly-suspenseful, and emotionally harrowing script he co-wrote with Hodges with just the right touch at every turn.

He's lucky to have a wonderful cast to work with, especially Randy Spence who plays Pike to the hilt as a frantic heroin addict going cold turkey, freaking out over every noise and shadow and wracked with guilt for what he's doing to his straight-arrow brother.

As Jack, Hodges reminds me of a young Joe Pantoliano and is every bit as intense, putting us right there in his place as we feel the desperation of a man who must venture onto the way, way wrong side of the law for the love of his brother while also having to put his survival skills to the ultimate test as they flee cross-country with nothing but Jack's archery skills to sustain them.

All this sounds good, just right for some passable entertainment if handled as well as it is here.  And indeed that was going to be the gist of my review--an okay movie that you won't mind devoting some time to, with what I assumed would be a fairly satisfying ending.

And then, that "fairly satisfying ending" turns out to be like one of those carnival rides where you spin around real fast inside a big wheel before the bottom suddenly falls out and you're stuck to the wall wondering what just happened.

That's all I'm going to say about THE SHADE SHEPHERD.  I'd love to talk more about it, but let's wait until you've seen it too. I don't know if the twist ending is as good as the one in THE SIXTH SENSE, but right now, for however long it lasts, it sorta feels like it.

Radar Pictures Partners with the Soska Sisters on New Horror Franchise "UNSEEN"

Radar Pictures In Development on Auditory Horror Film

"UNSEEN"

Jen & Sylvia Soska to Write & Direct Feature

Story Based on BlindSide, an Audio-Only Adventure Game

Los Angeles, CA--Radar Pictures has secured the film rights to BlindSide, the world's first audio-only mobile adventure game.  The project will be developed as Unseen, a horror feature about a couple who wake up blind in a terrifying world they cannot recognize.

The film is a collaboration between Radar Pictures and the Soska Sisters (2019's Rabid, American Mary).  The Soska Sisters will write, direct and produce.  Michael Napoliello, Maria Frisk and Alex Power will produce for Radar.

"We have long admired Radar and the tremendous work they do as industry titans and innovators," said the Soska Sisters.  "We are very excited and honored to be partnering with this legendary team as they delve deeper into the horror genre and break new ground again.

"Unseen is a horror film experience completely unlike any other before it.  This film will truly bring the fear of the unknown to life by putting the focus of storytelling on what you hear."

A Boston couple wakes up inexplicably blind and, in their efforts to find help, they stumble into a world that is menacingly different than the one they knew the night before.  As the couple claw their way through this terrifying new reality, they fear their sanity slipping away.  They sense the presence of a strange new species, one for which light is not a priority.

Unseen will be executive produced by Radar's Ted Field, whose 30 years in the film industry have led to worldwide box office grosses topping $8 billion.  He has produced over 60 films, including the Jumanji franchise, the Riddick franchise, Amityville Horror (2005), The Last Samurai and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003).

Speaking of the upcoming collaboration, Field shared, "I enjoyed what the Soskas did with their twist on Cronenberg's Rabid.  Their work as writers and directors embraces classic genre elements and adds a fresh, visceral quality.  I look forward to seeing what we create with Unseen."

A script is currently underway.

MONDO BALORDO -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

It's the same old "mondo" mockumentary that we've seen numerous times before, and indeed these things seem as though they're churned out like sausage and packaged with new labels, but the difference with MONDO BALORDO, aka "A Fool's World" (Severin Films, 1964), is that it's narrated by none other than venerable Boris Karloff in his unmistakably dulcet tones.

This is sorta the flipside of Bela Lugosi's dour commentary on the human race in Ed Wood's GLEN OR GLENDA? "People! All going somewhere!" Bela grumbled with a scowl in that oddball classic, while Boris, in contrast, is at his most jovial here while narrating his way through the incredibly verbose script he's been handed--possibly more words than the actor ever uttered in a single movie--and seems to be rather amused by its non-stop, unabashed ridiculousness.

As always, naughty sex tales, trivia, legends, and anecdotes abound, whether joking vignettes staged for the film or actual documentary footage of strange social and sexual customs from around the world.

A Miss America contest which appears to have been held on an Italian soundstage gives way to Bedouin prostitutes selling their wares in desert tents or tribal natives engaging in unusual courting and marriage rituals.

The editing and continuity are also characteristically random. Just when we've settled into watching an attractive woman stripping for some Asian businessmen, a jarring edit places us in the wilds of Africa where a lion is savagely killing and feasting upon a zebra. Later we witness an actual exorcism in India which involves a chicken (you don't want to know how).

Homosexuality is again one of the film's major taboos to explore, as we're once again invited to marvel at how feminine the transvestites look as they dance with regularly-garbed gay men or enjoy the sight of lebians cavorting together in the sanctity of underground nightclubs.

Those who enjoy watching dwarves go about their daily lives are also indulged as we observe a diminutive hooker servicing her customer in the backseat of an abandoned car parked in an alley.

Elsewhere a man barely a meter tall in a crazy zoot suit shows off some incredible acrobatic dance moves in front of a hot rock and roll band. This guy is probably my favorite part of the whole film, partly because he's just so entertaining and partly because he helped rouse me out of the drowsy stupor that much of the rest of MONDO BALORDO was lulling me into.

Let's face it--despite its cornucopia of utter strangeness and some truly bizarre sights, much of this is a rather boring and even confusing experience. It's as though dozens of film clips of various unrelated sex jokes, titillating (for 60s standards) footage both real and staged, and standard travelogue stuff from several exotic locations around the world were swept up off the cutting room floor, thrown into a blender, pasted together, and made more palatable by having our beloved Boris bless it all with his warmly inviting vocal inflections.

The Blu-ray from Severin Films is scanned in 4K from the original negative which is in decent shape for an old and obscure film rarity of this type. (Any inherent imperfections in picture quality only add to its nostalgic appeal for me.) Anamorphic widescreen 1.66:1. Audio is English mono, with English subtitles.

Extras consist of a trailer and an added feature, THE ORIENTALS (1960), a genuine travelogue of various far Eastern locations that's told through the eyes of six women and which was scanned from a 35mm print in the Something Weird archives.

As per my usual disclaimer, many viewers will have absolutely no desire to subject themselves to such a strange mash-up of the banal and the bizarre as MONDO BALORDO--while on the other hand, there are those who will hungrily inhale this weirdly intoxicating sleazefest just like the hopeless drug addicts we see awaiting their daily fix of brain-rotting bliss.

SKIN: A HISTORY OF NUDITY IN THE MOVIES

A definitive documentary on the history of nudity in the movies, beginning with the silent movie era through present day, examining the changes in morality that led to the use of nudity in films while emphasizing the political, sociological and artistic changes that shaped this rich history.

A deep discussion of pre-code Hollywood and its amoral roots, the censorship that “cleaned up” Hollywood and how the MPAA was formed leads into a discussion of how nudity changed cinematic culture through the decades.

It culminates in a discussion of “what are nude scenes like in the age of the #METOO movement?”

JUST ONE MORE KISS -- Movie Review by Porfle

To be honest, the premise of JUST ONE MORE KISS (Indican Pictures, 2019)--the ghost of a woman's recently-deceased husband appears to her and tries to help her withstand the tragedy of their prematurely aborted love--sounded like a gateway straight into chick-flick hell.

Which only made it that much more of a pleasant surprise to find myself watching one of the most thoroughly engaging movies I've seen this year.

True, the first ten minutes or so subject us to the double whammy of (a) painfully uncomfortable social awkwardness when friend Barry gets obnoxiously drunk and makes a fool of himself at Max (Patrick Zeller) and Abby's tenth anniversary party, so Max has to drive him home, and (b) sudden unbearable tragedy of jarringly maudlin proportions when Max gets killed in an auto accident while driving Barry home.

Seems like this is going to be a tough and emotionally manipulative slog as Abby flees to the country cabin she and Max used to share, eschewing any attempts by loved ones to comfort her and rebuffing anyone who tries to befriend her in her new surroundings.

And when Max's ghost starts to appear to her, we get the unpleasant feeling that we're about to see a rehash of GHOST with a dash of THE SIXTH SENSE.

However, just when things are looking really bleak, something unexpected happens--writer-director Faleena Hopkins (who also plays Abby) sidesteps all of that predictable stuff and starts delving into some really interesting emotional and metaphysical territory.  This is especially true when Abby stumbles over the edge of a cliff and the incorporeal Max can't do a thing to help her as she hangs on for dear life.

She also explores the more playful aspects of the situation such as Abby seemingly talking to herself while onlookers look on in concern, and Max reacting with a bit of old-fashioned jealousy when a local bachelor takes an interest in Abby.

But that's nothing compared to what happens when Abby's sister Lorna (Emily Bennett) and the now-sober Barry (Joe Barbagallo) show up at Abby's doorstep to implore her to forgive Barry for being indirectly responsible for Max's death, and to urge her to let Max go and get on with her life. How will Abby react to this? What's more, how will Max react to it as he stands by observing it all unseen?

It was at this point that I realized that I was not only tolerating JUST ONE MORE KISS, but voraciously devouring it. Faleena Hopkins has done a masterful job not only putting this keenly enjoyable film together but also giving a fine lead performance.

Bennett and Joe Barbagallo as Lorna and Barry are stunningly good in their emotionally resonant scenes, as are Frances Mitchell and Erik Parillo as Max's long-suffering parents (and, of course, Patrick Zeller as Max himself), and when they delve deep into Hopkins' rich dialogue it hits hard.  The story builds to a wrenching conclusion that really pays off.

JUST ONE MORE KISS wallows not in maudlin sentiment and a by-the-numbers plot but in love, loss, guilt, forgiveness, suicidal thoughts, and spiritual uncertainty. Not only is it not a rip-off of GHOST, I actually think it's way more interesting, and one of the best true-blue chick flicks I've ever seen.
