I remember watching INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (Olive Signature, 1956) on TV as a kid and being severely creeped out by it.  It's definitely a sci-fi/horror movie that kids can appreciate--creepy, atmospheric, and featuring some horrific special effects and themes.

Watching it again as an adult (as I have several times), I find the film loses none of its effectiveness and is indeed a wholly adult, mature story that develops its characters well and places them in situations that are relatable while still brimming with elements of horror and even film noir.

Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy, INNERSPACE, SLIPSTREAM) returns to his hometown of Santa Mira, California to find old high school sweetheart Becky (Dana Wynter, THE CRIMSON PIRATE, AIRPORT) back in town after many years.  Now both divorced, their reunion is sweetly romantic with a clear likelihood of growing deeper.

The trouble is, Santa Mira seems to have been hit by an epidemic of people convinced that their loved ones have been replaced by physically exact but emotionally empty duplicates. Miles and Becky are skeptical at first, until friends Jack (King Donovan) and his wife Teddy (Carolyn Jones, "The Addams Family") find a body in their house which appears to be a dormant, half-formed copy of Jack himself.

As the mystery deepens, Miles discovers a duplicate of Becky in her own cellar, placed there by what appears to be her own father.  It quickly becomes clear that the duplicates come to life and take over when the actual person goes to sleep. Trying to convince others of what is happening, they realize that many townspeople including former trusted friends and family have already been replaced.

The film's slow and subtle build-up soon gives way to growing fear as Miles and Becky don't know who to trust or confide in.  It kicks into high gear when they and friends Jack and Teddy discover giant seed pods in Jack's greenhouse which are in the process of manufacturing duplicate bodies for them all, ready to be inhabited when they go to sleep.

Special effects in this scene are flawless, the grotesque pod replicas being the result of full-body and facial casts of the actors, and Siegel stages it with impressive imagination and skill.  It's an iconic sequence that still retains every bit of its original emotional power.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS then becomes a true cinematic nightmare of hysteria and deep paranoia.  The still-human characters, struggling to stay awake, are forced to flee while almost everyone else in town conspires to stop them.

It's an alien invasion of the most insidious kind, so different from the usual spaceships and death ray stuff of the 50s that it strikes home in ways that make it uniquely unsettling, disturbing, and personal.
Director Don Siegel (DIRTY HARRY, THE SHOOTIST) does some of his absolute best work here, his seemingly simple style yielding consistently effective shots that are deftly staged yet lean and economical.

The camerawork and black-and-white photography and lighting are exquisite, giving the middle third of the film, which takes place at night, the look and feel of the most visually arresting film noir.  Carmen Dragon (father of Daryl Dragon of "Captain and Tennille" fame) offers a highly effective musical score which some think is overpowering at times but I consider a major asset in the film's emotional power.

Siegel's cast is stocked with great actors, with both the leads and supporting players handling their roles with utter conviction.  Familiar character actors include Virginia Christine (THE MUMMY'S CURSE, "Mrs. Olsen" in the old Folger's coffee commercials), Jean Willes, Dabbs Greer, Larry Gates, and even future iconic director Sam Peckinpah.

Miles and Becky's flight from the "pod people" grows more frantic and desperate with each passing minute, culminating in an exhausting chase through the mountains in which the two protagonists are pursued by hundreds of human-looking alien "monsters."  Trying to make it to the main highway, they will endure a final, heartrending nightmare that is still burned into the memories of many viewers over the years.

The original ending by Siegel was abrupt, open-ended, and disheartening.  Test screenings showed it to be either confusing or just too downbeat for the audience, so the studio demanded new scenes to bookend the story. In them, Miles is desperately trying to convince skeptical psychiatrists and police of his wild story before they lock him away for good as a raving lunatic.

Many viewers still bristle at these added scenes, preferring the film to end at its most pessimstic point, and also object to a new voiceover by Miles (imposed by the studio to help clear up various plot points) which they liken to the one in BLADE RUNNER.

Personally, I feel Miles' narration gives his experiences a heightened immediacy and better draw us in to his story.  Likewise, the bookend scenes work very well for me, increasing the urgency of Miles' account and ending with a priceless moment when the truth dawns on the faces of Dr. Bassett (the great Whit Bissell at his powerful best) and "Dick Van Dyke Show" icon Richard Deacon.

Rather than offering a "happy ending" as its detractors insist, this merely sets the stage for what we can imagine will be a long, protracted, and horrific war between the humans and the invaders.

The Blu-ray from Olive Films' "Olive Signature" label (limited to 5,000 units) is a high-def digital restoration that looks better than I've ever seen it before, with a 2.00:1 aspect ratio and mono sound. Optional English subtitles are available.

Extras consist of two audio commentaries, one by film writer/historian Richard Harlan Smith and another with stars Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter and director Joe Dante.  "The Stranger in Your Lover's Eyes" is a two-part visual essay by Siegel, read by his son Kristoffer Tabori.

Featurettes include "The Fear is Real" with filmmakers Larry Cohen and Joe Dante, "I No Longer Belong: The Rise and Fall of Walter Wanger", "Sleep No More: Invasion of the Body Snatchers Revisited" featuring the film's stars and celebrity admirers, a 1985 interview with Kevin McCarthy, a look at the film's locations in the present day, and "What's In a Name?" which explores the origin of the film's title.

There's also a gallery of production documents, an essay by author and film programmer Kier-La Janisse, and the film's original theatrical trailer.

Whatever your age (this film works great for both young and old) or political persuasion (people have been interpreting its metaphorical intent however they choose since it was first released), INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS remains one of the most perfectly realized and enduringly effective horror films of the 50s or any era.

Feature Sets Digital Debut on North American VOD Platforms December 7th


Los Angeles, CA – November 11, 2021 – Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group/Entertainment Studios, has acquired North American VOD rights to the horror feature film THE REENACTMENT. THE REENACTMENT will be available to rent and own on North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms. The film is set for a North American release on December 7, 2021 through Freestyle Digital Media.

THE REENACTMENT tells the story of a film crew working on a true crime show who find themselves imperiled when they start to film at an abandoned house that may not be abandoned after all.

A film crew working on an “Unsolved Mysteries” type of television show (“Myths & Mysteries”) in the mid-1990s gets more than they bargained for when they arrive to film at an abandoned house. The story goes that a couple of bank robbers known as the Wallach Brothers once used this house as their safe house. Unbeknownst to them, it had been recently sold to a young newlywed couple, who ended up spending their first night alone in their new home at precisely the wrong time. 

The bank robbers arrived at the house to lay low after another successful robbery, and brutally murdered the couple they weren’t expecting to be there. Afterwards, the Wallach Brothers disappeared. What happened to the bank robbers has been a mystery ever since. And some mysteries, it turns out, are better left unsolved.

 

 

 
Directed by Andrew Ford and co-written by Andrew Ford & Eli Osman, THE REENACTMENT was produced by Steve Longi, Whitney Wolanin, Andrew Ford, Eli Osman, and Jack Sheahan. It was filmed in Nashville, Tennessee.

The ensemble cast of THE REENACTMENT features Megan Duffy (‘Jane’), James Storm (‘The Killer’), Kaitlyn Bausch (‘Hannah’), Stephen Green (‘Kevin’), Nick Fair (‘Phil’), Madison Boyd (‘Monica’), Corey Knox (‘Jonathan’), Eli Osman (‘Nick Huntsman’), and Nick Huntsman (‘Charlie Monroe’) alongside Tony Todd (Wilbur) of CANDYMAN fame.

Toronto, ON - Following a successful run on the global film festival circuit, Indiecan Entertainment has announced the VOD release of Marc Price's Nightshooters.  The British black comedy action film will be available in North America on a number of digital and cable platforms beginning November 2nd.

Nightshooters combines a fun gangster film, a solid comedy, and a knowing take on the world of film production. The film is anchored by a first-class cast: celebrated stuntman Jean-Paul Ly (Jailbreak, F9: The Fast Saga, Doctor Strange) headlines as indie stuntman Donnie. Nightshooters is the story of a group of filmmakers illegally shooting a low budget film in an abandoned office building slated for demolition. When they inadvertently witness and film a gangland execution in the opposite building, they have to use all their skills and wits to survive the night whilst being relentlessly pursued by the gang who are hellbent on not leaving any witness alive.

Los Angeles, CA - Vertical Entertainment has announced the release of Steven Grayhm's The Secret of Sinchanee. Following a string of awards on the international festival circuit, The Secret of Sinchanee will be available in select theaters and on all major digital and cable platforms, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Comcast, Spectrum, Cox and more.

Grayhm stars opposite Green Beret and former NFL player Nate Boyer ("Mayans M.C") and Tamara Austin ("The Walking Dead"), who play Boston homicide detectives lured to a small-town after the disappearance of a single mother. The Secret of Sinchanee also stars breakout Netflix child star Laila Lockhart Kraner ("Gabby’s Dollhouse"), Jacob Schick (American Sniper, A Star Is Born), and Rudy Reyes ("Generation Kill").

CHOMPY & THE GIRLS will be available to rent and own on North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms on September 14, 2021 through Freestyle Digital Media.

CHOMPY & THE GIRLS is the story of a troubled and depressed young woman who meets her father for the first time – an encounter that goes from awkward to alarming when they witness a man swallow a little girl whole. 

 

 

This terrifying event sends them on a wild ride full of interdimensional entities, scary little girls, and crippling insecurities about the future.

CHOMPY & THE GIRLS was written and directed by Skye Braband and was produced by Sarah De Leon (Citizen Skull Management), Marty Lang (film professor at the University of Memphis), and Skye Braband (Zig Zag Pictures). Executive producer is Mark Myers of Citizen Skull Productions.

The cast of CHOMPY & THE GIRLS features Christie St. John (‘Jackson’), Steve Marvel as (‘Sam’), Seneca Palliotta (‘Birch’), Julie Dolan (‘Deborah’), Hari Williams (‘Lotus’), Reggie Koffman (‘Chompy’), and a special appearance by Udo Kier (‘voice of Chompy’).

These nominations cap a remarkable festival run for To Your Last Death. The film has snagged 34 wins since its world premiere at FrightFest, including Best Feature from Pasadena International Film Festival, Best Director from Horrorhound, and Best Horror Feature from Phoenix International Film Festival. “Based on our research, we are the second most award-winning horror feature of 2020,” says co-writer and executive producer Tanya Klein.

Quite an achievement for a twisted, low-budget animated movie which Film Threat rated 9/10 and raved "one of the best horror/action movies I've seen in a while". To Your Last Death combines a wildly imaginative script with eye-popping animation. The film is anchored by a first-class voice cast: Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, "Firefly", "Gotham") as the mysterious Gamemaster, Ray Wise ("Twin Peaks", Batman: The Killing Joke, Robocop), Dani Lennon (The Love Witch, Bite Me), Bill Moseley (House of 1000 Corpses, Repo! The Genetic Opera, The Devil's Rejects), and William Shatner (the "Star Trek" franchise, "The Practice") as the sadistic Overseer.

To Your Last Death features hand-drawn animation in a style reminiscent of "Archer" and "Metalocalypse." According to executive producer and co-writer Jim Cirile, the film is "extremely violent, but it features dimensional, relatable characters and definitely has something to say. There's political bite and social commentary and surprising depth."

To Your Last Death was produced by Coverage Ink Films and directed by Jason Axinn, from a script by Coverage Ink's Tanya Klein and Jim Cirile. Axinn produced alongside Cindi Rice and Paige Barnett.  Tanya Klein, James Cirile, and John Frank Rosenblum served as executive producers. Carl Frank, best known for his work on Dungeons & Dragons and Magic the Gathering, led the art department. Rene G. Boscio composed the score.

 

 

 

After emerging as the sole survivor in a deadly revenge game set up by her father to punish his children, Miriam receives an offer from a supernatural entity to go back in time and try again. Now, Miriam must survive both her father's blood lust and the Gamemaster's ever-changing rules to save her siblings as she relives the worst night of her life.

Think bondage, torture, zombies…and governmental corruption. Hernán and Gabriela, are going to a motel without realizing that inside the room, behind the mirror, there is something waiting for them. Lucio and Paulo have a plan to swap girlfriends without realizing what will really happen. A group of friends are watching a snuff movie ignoring that the real terror is sitting next to them. Juan attends a date with Sonia thinking he is going to get laid, when he realizes that she has bigger plans for him.

As their primal urges distract them all, local officials are judged innocent of the neglect that caused the building collapse—and then the horror really begins.

Paramount worked with director Randal Kleiser to restore GREASE to its original vibrancy with the highest quality sound, picture resolution and color.  The original negative was scanned and received extensive clean up and color correction using previously unavailable digital restoration tools such as high dynamic range technology.  In addition, the audio was enhanced from a six-track mix created for an original 70mm release, giving the music more clarity.  The resulting picture and sound create an exceptional home viewing experience. 

The GREASE 40th Anniversary Edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Packs include the fully restored version of the film plus an all-new, in-depth exploration of the little-known origins of what would become a Broadway play and then a feature film and worldwide phenomenon.  “Grease: A Chicago Story” features new interviews with writer Jim Jacobs and original cast members of the Chicago show.  In addition, the discs include the original song the title sequence was animated to and an alternate ending salvaged from the original black & white 16mm work print discovered by director Randal Kleiser.

Time is ticking as Michael (Neeson) gets entangled in a deadly conspiracy on his daily commute that forces him to work against the clock to protect the lives of his fellow train passengers. The edge-of-your-seat action thriller also stars Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring, The Departed, TV’s “Bates Motel”), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring, Insidious), Jonathan Banks (TV’s “Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”), with Elizabeth McGovern (TV’s Downton Abbey), and Sam Neill (Thor: Ragnarok, Daybreakers).

Michael’s (Neeson) daily commute home quickly becomes anything but routine. After being contacted by a mysterious stranger (Farmiga), Michael is forced to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on his train before the last stop. As he works against the clock to solve the puzzle, he realizes a deadly plan is unfolding and is unwittingly caught up in a criminal conspiracy. One that carries life and death stakes, for himself and his fellow passengers.

From Jaume Collet-Serra, the director of Non-Stop and The Shallows, and written for the screen by Byron Willinger, Philip de Blasi, and Ryan Engle, The Commuter’s home entertainment release includes two never-before-seen featurettes that focus on the cast’s experience shooting the film and the technical details of shooting on a train.

The 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray versions will also feature Dolby Atmos audio remixed specifically for the home-theater environment, to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead.
