Ed Wood In Drag (video)

Filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr. "came out" as a transvestite...

in his semi-autobiographical 1953 film GLEN OR GLENDA?

Here are some scenes of him in drag from that movie as well as clips from "Take It Out In Trade" (Something Weird Video) and home movie footage (Legend Films), both from the 70s.

All The Vampira Scenes In "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959) (video)

Vampira (aka Maila Nurmi) was a popular TV horror movie hostess in the 50s.

Filmmaker Ed Wood persuaded her to appear in his magnum opus, "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

She plays "Vampire Girl", an undead woman resurrected by space aliens.

Also in the cast are Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson...
...and a stand-in for the late Bela Lugosi.

The film didn't do much for Vampira's career at the time.

But bad movie fans would rediscover it decades later...
...and elevate it to the status of a revered classic.

CRISWELL ONSCREEN: All His Ed Wood Movie Intros & Outros (video)

Famed fake psychic Criswell played host for three of Ed Wood's most notorious movies...

...appearing at the beginning and end of each.

(In "Orgy of the Dead" he also played a part within the film itself.)

Criswell wrote his own copy which he read from cue cards...

...delivering it with a blustery aplomb befitting the occasion.

(For an in-depth look at Criswell's role in "Orgy of the Dead", click here)

Bizarre Opening Scene in "The Beast of Yucca Flats" (1961) (video)

In Coleman Francis' no-budget 1961 thriller "Beast of Yucca Flats"...

...Tor Johnson plays a nuclear physicist. (Yes, you read that right.)

Until an A-Bomb blast turns him into a mindless, homicidal psycho wandering the desert.

For the most part,  it's your typical PG-rated monster movie.  You could watch it with your kids.
Despite Tor having a somewhat questionable interest in one of his victims.

But none of that compares to the totally weird opening scene.

First, there's the brief "nipple slip." In 1961, no less.
The girl wears loafers right out of the shower.
And has a very loud clock.

The scene is obviously meant as a preview...
...yet at no time during the movie does Tor go near anyone's house.

This is where it gets really weird...

(Read our review of the movie HERE.)

Cheapest Movie Set Ever? Cockpit Scene From "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959) (video)

In Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" (1994), the actor hired to play an airline pilot is dismayed by the sparse cockpit set.

In the actual film "Plan 9 From Outer Space", we find this to be no exaggeration.

Gregory Walcott (right) and co-pilot are sitting on chairs in front of a blank wall.

There appears to be a shower curtain hanging over the doorway.

Not sure what that is they're "steering" with.

Listen to those chairs creak.

It's an impressionistic set, to say the least.

Walcott, bless his heart, went on to have a fairly successful acting career.

Tor Johnson Trusted With Dialogue In "Plan 9 From Outer Space"! (1959) (video)

Swedish wrestler-turned-actor Tor Johnson was not known for his dialogue skills.

In fact, he was rarely given any dialogue besides "AAA! AAA!"

But in "Plan 9 From Outer Space", director Ed Wood needed to establish him as a police inspector...

...before killing him off and turning him into a zombie.

Hence, we get Tor squeezed into a suit and hat, and engaging in the following deathless exchange...

Bunny Breckinridge in "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959) (video)

John Cabell "Bunny" Breckinridge (1903-1996)…

...was an independently wealthy Shakespearean actor and drag queen with a highly unorthodox lifestyle.

In 1959, he was cast by his friend Edward D. Wood, Jr...

...as alien leader "The Ruler" in Wood's film "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

(He would later be portrayed by Bill Murray in the Tim Burton film "Ed Wood.")

BELA LUGOSI: DEAD OR ALIVE in "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959)

In 1956, director Ed Wood filmed some footage of his friend Bela Lugosi.

Emoting in front of Tor Johnson's house...mourning at a funeral...and lurking in a makeshift graveyard set in his Dracula cape.

It was test footage for a vampire movie Wood was planning for Bela.

Bela died later that year.

Ed Wood decided to use the footage and promote his next project, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, as Lugosi's final film.

But in order to pad Bela's limited screen time, Wood used his wife's chiropractor, Tom Mason, as a stand-in...

...despite the fact that the man bore no resemblance to Lugosi whatsoever.
