ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS -- Movie Review by Porfle

Since 1960's OCEAN'S 11 had been such a lark for the Rat Pack, some of them got together again four years later with director Gordon Douglas for the lighthearted crime spoof ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS (1964). But as we learn from Frank Sinatra, Jr.'s commentary--which, once again, serves as an absolutely invaluable first-hand account--this breezy musical about rival gangs in Prohibition-era Chicago was overshadowed not only by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who was Frank Sinatra's personal friend, but also by the five-day kidnapping of Frank, Jr. himself in Lake Tahoe, California.

While much of the movie is breezy fun, it's apparent in several scenes that Papa Frank's heart just isn't in it. Still, he musters what he can as "good guy" crime kingpin Robbo, the lone holdout when rival boss Guy Gisborne (Peter Falk) rubs out the current big cheese Big Jim (Edward G. Robinson in a brief cameo) and demands all the other bosses line up behind him. Robbo's refusal results in the opposing bosses hitting each other's speakeasies in a frenzy of mutual destruction.

Enter Big Jim's daughter Marian, played by a gorgeous Barbara Rush, who offers Robbo a hefty sum to eliminate the man who killed her father. Robbo instead donates the cash to an orphanage, thus gaining a citywide reputation as the new "Robin Hood." This new image suits him so he starts giving a cut of all his proceeds to charity, while Marian, whose intentions go beyond mere revenge, seeks the aid of any man who'll respond to her seductive advances to make a power grab. Meanwhile, Guy Gisborne continues in his efforts to bring down Robbo both violently and by trying to get him sent up the river on trumped-up counterfeiting charges.

As an old-style gangster comedy, ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS is about on the same level as BUGSY MALONE or the "A Piece of the Action" episode of "Star Trek", only with better production values. Some of the transitions into the song-and-dance numbers are awkward, to say the least, with Falk's number coming off as particularly ear-bending despite his giving it the old college try (fortunately, the rest of his comic performance is a delight).

Dino, who plays Robbo's partner Little John, fares better with his jaunty pool-hustling tune "Any Man Who Loves His Mother", and Sammy's energetic shoot-em-up number "Bang! Bang!" is a real blast. Frank, in his best moment in the film, seems to forget his troubles for a bit when he gets to croon his classic ode to Chicago, "My Kind of Town."

Another plus for the production is the presence of the venerable Bing Crosby as Allen A. Dale, an overaged "orphan" who joins Robbo's crew in order to help coordinate his charitable activities. Bing does a wonderful soft-shoe number with the boys back at the orphanage entitled "Don't Be a Do Badder!" (the lyrics are cringeworthy but Bing manages to sell them), then joins in another fun song-and-dance sequence with Frank and Dean, "You've Either Got or You Haven't Got Style", which is unique for having all three of these major singing stars together at one time.

A gaggle of wonderfully rough-looking character actors fill the supporting roles as well as some familiar names such as Victor Buono, Hans Conried, Robert Foulk, Richard Bakalyan, Billy Curtis, and Sig Ruman. A chorus line of flappers performing the number "Charlotte Couldn't Charleston" is led by none other than legendary singer-dancer-choreographer Toni Basil of "Mickey" fame, who would co-star in VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS a year later and go on to appear in the counterculture classic EASY RIDER in '69.

While the story tends to drag a bit here and there, and the songs aren't always top-notch, ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS is still an enjoyable enough gangster spoof and one of the last of the old wave of Hollywood musicals. It's a shame that the conditions under which it was made so dampened the spirits of those involved, especially its star, Frank Sinatra, resulting in a movie whose lightheartedness comes off as noticeably strained.

“Sigourney Weaver is the ideal guide for this immersive trek across our Solar System, which spotlights the wonders and possibilities of science and will inspire a new generation of space explorers,” said Jeff Hasler, EVP, Production and Development at National Geographic Studios.

“There is little content in the world that matches the quality offered by this unique film experience, using 8k resolution at 60 frames per second,” said Steven Savage, Sky-Skan president.

Using stunning visuals and state-of-the-art computer graphics, ASTEROID: MISSION EXTREME hurtles audiences through space on an extraordinary adventure with astronauts to discover the possibilities of using asteroids as stepping stones to connect with other worlds. Based on real science, the film presents the fascinating idea and unique challenges of asteroids as “way stations” to facilitate manned space travel, and also explores various ways to prevent asteroids from hitting the Earth.

An original co-production of National Geographic Studios and Sky-Skan, ASTEROID: MISSION EXTREME is presented by Lockheed Martin. Produced and directed by Annette Sotheran-Barnett (To Space & Back), the film is written by Sotheran-Barnett, Mose Richards and Rick Adams. Executive producers are Jeff Hasler, Brooke Runnette, and Steven Savage.

Harold Lloyd (1893-1971) was one of the great comic stars of the cinema, a genius on par with Chaplin and Keaton. Yet, he came from a humble background, and perhaps this was the key to his affinity with "the ordinary man" who does extraordinary things.  His motion picture career spanned 34 years and over 200 comedies. Among his most famous films are Grandma's Boy (1922), Safety Last! (1923), The Freshman (1925), The Kid Brother (1927), Speedy (1928), and Movie Crazy (1932).

100 Years of Harold Lloyd will be available in three packages: The Films: a package of seven features; The Shorts Vol. 1, a package of three shorts; and The Shorts Vol. 2, a package of five shorts.  The films will be released in various languages in over fifteen countries, many for the first time.

The feature films included in the package are: Dr. Jack (1922), Why Worry? (1923), Safety Last! (1923), The Freshman (1925), For Heaven's Sake (1926), The Kid Brother (1927), Speedy (1928).  The shorts included are: An Eastern Westerner (1920), High and Dizzy (1920), Never Weaken (1921) in the first, and Take a Chance (1918), Young Mr. Jazz (1919) The Marathon (1919), Bumping into Broadway (1919), His Royal Slyness (1920), in the second.  Each feature film and collections of shorts will be available to own for $14.99 HD / $11.99 SD or to rent for $3.99 HD / $2.99 SD.

This unprecedented release follows on the heels of the Criterion Collection's DVD and Blu-ray debut of Speedy, Lloyd's final silent film.

"We are honored to be able to bring this collection of extraordinary films to an international audience," Eric Doctorow, CEO of Random Media said.  "Partnering with Criterion and iTunes made this possible and we are grateful for their help to make this happen."

Sue Lloyd Hayes, Harold Lloyd's granddaughter and CEO of Harold Lloyd Entertainment, said, "This is a very thrilling way to bring Harold Lloyd to the digital age with his death-defying stunts and pure humor to the new generation with genuine laughter."

Towards the end of his life, Lloyd himself stated, "It has been amazing to me that these comedies can still strike a responsive note of laughter with audiences of all ages and in all parts of the world. Laughter is the universal language. It establishes a common identity among people-regardless of other differences. It is the sweetest sound in the whole world."

Award-Winning Documentary "Finding Noah" Returns to Select Theaters for Holiday Season

Award-Winning Documentary "Finding Noah"
Returns to Select Theaters for Holiday Season

"Finding Noah" partners with SpectiCast to bring true story
of the search for Noah's Ark to the big screen

LOS ANGELES, December 7, 2015 – "Finding Noah," an award-winning documentary which brings to life an archaeological expedition in search of Noah's Ark, is returning to select theaters for the holiday season. Narrated by Academy Award nominee Gary Sinise, the film follows a team of archaeologists, theologians and explorers as they summit one of the world's most dangerous mountains in a quest to discover a highly sought after piece of history.

After a successful theater event in October 2015, "Finding Noah" is partnering with SpectiCast, a leading distributor of event cinema programs, to provide encore presentations. This will also be the film's first showing after winning Best Documentary of 2015 at the Sun & Sand Film Festival.

"We were thrilled by the film's performance in October, and we have heard from many people who missed the first event or wanted to see the film again," said Brent Baum, the director and producer of "Finding Noah." "Through our partnership with SpectiCast, we are able to bring the film back to select markets, so everyone will have another chance to see it on the big screen."

For thousands of years, mankind has been fascinated by the story of a global flood and one family's dramatic escape in a homemade vessel. Versions of the story appear in almost every culture, but the most well known is the biblical account of Noah found in Genesis.

Historical reports, scientific evidence and biblical accounts point to Mount Ararat, now located in Eastern Turkey, as the Ark's final resting place. "Finding Noah" examines this evidence in detail, while chronicling the harrowing journey of a team of men in their search for the Ark.

"Noah's Ark is one of history's greatest mysteries, and it is an object of great historical, cultural and spiritual significance," said Baum. "There was so much evidence leading to Mount Ararat, it seemed irresponsible not to look for it there. Filming the search for Noah's Ark has become one of the most amazing adventures of my life."

Known as Agri Dagh or "Painful Mountain," Mount Ararat is located in one of the most volatile geopolitical regions in the world. The "Finding Noah" expedition had to brave dangerous environmental challenges, deadly rock and ice falls, hidden crevasses, hypoxia and even terrorism in their quest to find the Ark. "Finding Noah" is not only a chronicle of a scientific mission, but a picture of how far the human spirit will go to achieve a goal.

"Finding Noah" will open in select theaters on December 10, with additional showings throughout December and early January. The event will include the full-length feature, as well as a panel discussion with archeologists, filmmakers and expedition team members. The theater is currently slated to appear in dozens of theaters with additional cities being added every day. Additional theater showings can be requested through SpectiCast. "THE REVENANT" Hits Select Theaters December 25 and Nationwide on January 8

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an epic story of survival and transformation on the American frontier.

While on an expedition into the uncharted wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally mauled by a bear, then abandoned by members of his own hunting team. Alone and near death, Glass refuses to succumb.  Driven by sheer will and his love for his Native American wife and son, he undertakes a 200-mile odyssey through the vast and untamed West on the trail of the man who betrayed him: John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy).  What begins as a relentless quest for revenge becomes a heroic saga against all odds towards home and redemption.  THE REVENANT is directed, produced and co-written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

Academy Award®-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu brings the legend of Hugh Glass to the screen with The Revenant, an epic adventure set in the unchartered 19th century American Frontier. Immersing audiences in the unparalleled beauty, mystery and dangers of life in 1823 America, the film explores one man’s transformation in a quest for survival. Part thriller, part wilderness journey, The Revenant explores primal drives not only for life itself but for dignity, justice, faith, family and home.

Known for such films as 21 Grams, Babel and the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture Birdman, The Revenant is Iñárritu’s first historical epic.  He brings his distinctive mix of visual immediacy and emotional intimacy to a story that transports audiences to a time and place that have rarely been experienced through visceral modern filmmaking.

The film’s wilderness-based production mirrored the harsh conditions Glass and company actually lived through in the 1800s. Iñárritu and his whole cast and crew were up for all that was thrown at them, welcoming the challenges of shooting in Canada and Argentina, regions known for unpredictable weather and untouched wilds, in order to fully understand the experience of fur trappers in the early 19th century.

Iñárritu collaborated closely with Golden Globe-winning and Academy Award®-nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio in a one-of-a-kind role as physically intense as it is emotionally raw. Along with BAFTA-winning actor Tom Hardy and celebrated actors Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, Iñárritu guided a diverse international and Native American cast into the unseen past. He reunited with Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubekzi to bring their distinctive camera style outdoors, with a camera that floats through the landscape – and gets so close-in at times the very breath of the characters is visually present.  And Iñárritu consulted closely with historical advisors to authentically explore the territorial wars with Native tribes that would later become the stuff of myth.

Glass’s mythology began in 1823, when he was among thousands joining the fur trade, a driving new force in the US economy. It was a time when many saw the wild as a spiritual void that demanded to be tamed and conquered by the steeliest of men. And so they poured into the unknown, plying unmapped rivers, disappearing into impossibly lush forests, seeking not only excitement and adventure but also profits -- often in fierce competition with the Native tribes for whom these lands had long been home.

Many such men died anonymously, but Glass entered the annals of American folklore by flat-out refusing to die. His legend sparked after he faced one of the West’s most feared dangers:  a startled grizzly bear.  For even the most tested frontiersmen that should have been the end.  But not for Glass. In Iñárritu’s telling of the tale, a mauled Glass clings to life – then suffers a human betrayal that fuels him to continue at any cost. In spite of tremendous loss, Glass pulls himself from an early grave – clawing his way through a gauntlet of unknown perils and unfamiliar cultures on a journey that becomes not just a search for reckoning but for redemption. As Glass moves through the frontier in turmoil, he comes to reject the urge for destruction that once drove him.   He has become a “revenant” -- one returned from the dead.

Says Iñárritu:  “Glass’s story asks the questions:  Who are we when we are completely stripped of everything?  What are we made of and what are we capable of?”

Adds Leonardo DiCaprio:  “The Revenant is an incredible journey through the harshest elements of an uncharted America.  It’s about the power of a man’s spirit. Hugh Glass’s story is the stuff of campfire legends, but Alejandro uses that folklore to explore what it really means to have all the chips stacked against you, what the human spirit can endure and what happens to you when you do endure.”

For Iñárritu The Revenant is a complete 180 from the interior world of Birdman.  Having honed in on the neuroses of current times, Iñárritu now switched all gears into a grand-scale story from the American past, with its perpetual tensions between savagery and civility, serenity and ambition.

“For over five years, this project was a dream for me,” says Iñárritu. “It’s an intense, emotional story set against a beautiful, epic backdrop that explores the lives of trappers who grew spiritually even as they suffered immensely physically. Though much of Glass’s story is apocryphal, we tried to stay very faithful to what these men went through in these undeveloped territories. We went through difficult physical and technical conditions to squeeze every honest emotion out of this incredible adventure.”

Iñárritu was fascinated by how stark peril strips us down and allows us a glimpse into what sustains us; how it can unearth things that might have remained hidden if that door to mortality had never been opened.  The mountaineer Reinhold Messner once said of facing the dangers of the wild:  “We are not learning how big we are.  We are learning how breakable, how weak, how full of fear we are.  You can only get this when you [are exposed] to great danger.”  Costume designer Jacqueline West echoes him, noting, “Glass is a character coming into touch with his own mortality, and that is a powerful thing.”

That confrontation with mortality also becomes entwined with an unusual father-son love story: that of a man who in his moment of loss becomes more devoted to life than ever.

“The Revenant is a story of harsh survival but also one of inspirational hope,” Iñárritu says.  “For me, the important part was to convey this adventure with a sense of wonder and discovery, as an exploration of both nature and human nature.”

Producer Steve Golin observes:  “Alejandro always brings truth to whatever he does.  There’s a grittiness to his work, but there’s also a spiritual element to his work – and in The Revenant that makes for a potent combination we haven’t seen in this way before.”

20th Century Fox and New Regency present The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Forrest Goodluck, Paul Anderson, Kristoffer Joner, Joshua Burge and Duane Howard. The film is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and the screenplay is written by Mark L. Smith and Iñárritu, based in part on Michael Punke’s novel. Producers are Iñárritu, Arnon Milchan (12 Years A Slave, Gone Girl), Steve Golin (Babel, True Detective), Mary Parent (Godzilla, Noah), Keith Redmon and James Skotchdopole (Birdman, Django Unchained); executive producers are James Packer (The Lego Movie), Jennifer Davisson (The Ides of March), David Kanter (Rendition) and Brett Ratner (X-Men: Last Stand). Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features original compositions from world-renowned, award-winning Italian composer Ennio Morricone. While Tarantino is a lifelong fan of Morricone's work and has used his music in his past five films, this historic collaboration marks the first time Morricone has recorded original score music specifically for one of Tarantino's films. It is also the first time Morricone has scored a Western film in over 40 years, since the release of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of red rock where Ruth, known in these parts as "The Hangman," will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former Union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town's new sheriff.

Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie's haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie's, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who's taking care of Minnie's while she's visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of red rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate general Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to red rock after all...

Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher, and Shannon McIntosh. The executive producers are Georgia Kacandes, Harvey Weinstein, and Bob Weinstein.
