Would You Spend 20 Years To Make A Film? Meet The Man Behind The Sci-Fi Film "THE PROTOTYPE" (See Trailer HERE!)

AFTER 23 YEARS, AN IMMIGRANT FILMMAKER’S DREAM FINALLY COMES TRUE

Distribution Set for Indie Sci-Fi Feature Film, The Prototype

(Phoenix, Arizona) For Italian-Argentine filmmaker, Marcelo Grion, failure was not an option. For more than 20 years, he has been determined and focused to make his sci-fi film, The Prototype, a reality. From age eleven, Grion was fiercely impassioned by cinema (especially sci-fi), writing his own scripts and making short films.

After studying film at the prestigious Fundacion Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, he came to the US with dreams of one day making a feature film, but without any connections or funds, his ambitions would take a long and arduous journey.

It took him 23 years, numerous technical difficulties throughout production to overcome, three marriages, bankruptcy and thousands of shifts as dishwasher and waiter to make this film he wrote and directed. "When I was young,  sci-fi films and exploring the universe were always a passion of mine,” states Grion.

Being a filmmaker allows me to create new worlds and to live forever, and I wanted my first feature film to be in the science fiction genre. Without enough money or connections to get started, just my passion and my burning desire for filmmaking, The Prototype was born. I wanted to push my mental strength to the limit, no matter how long it would take to prove my talent.”

WATCH THE TRAILER:

In The Prototype, Garrett Brown wakes up to a destroyed Earth 300 years into the future. His memory is slowly coming back thanks to drinking a blue liquid provided by human clones that survived the nuclear holocaust. Garrett remembers being part of a United States government agency and leading an investigation, in which terrorist aliens, led by Piak and Reverend Jeremiah C. Hope, plan to take over the planet.

Garrett dies protecting us but is buried and hidden by the agency to later resurrect in the future. Garrett and the clones who saved him must now come together to overthrow Piak, the alien conqueror, and take back Earth. Garrett fulfills his destiny and becomes The Prototype - the only hope for mankind.

Shot in 16mm in locations throughout Italy and the United States, Grion has put his entire net worth and years of effort into completing this film. With his tenacity and passion for the story, Grion persevered through all the ups and downs, and is elated that Fantastic Films International is overseeing distribution.

ABOUT ENERGIA FILMS CORPORATION
The company was created by Marcelo Grion in 2002 and since its inception, its mission is to deliver high quality entertainment maintaining an unique artistic vision. Their next project is a high budget sci-fi film entitled “The Seventh”.

Artsploitation Films Sold to Kino Lorber

Kino Lorber Buys Artsploitation Films

Agreement Comprises 100 Title Film Library With Upcoming New Releases And Assumption Of All Ongoing Operations

New York, NY – May 21, 2021 – Kino Lorber is pleased to announce that it has concluded an agreement to acquire renowned distributor Artsploitation Films from its owner and president Ray Murray. Mr. Murray and other members of his team will remain involved to help grow the business as a division and brand of Kino Lorber.

Created in 2014 by Murray, formerly the founder and head of TLA Entertainment Group, Artsploitation releases bold international genre and cutting edge specialty films that push the boundaries of traditional art house cinema. Their intriguing mix of movies include international thrillers, controversial horror, stylish erotica, award-winning LGBTQ dramas and offbeat future cult classics.

Notable library titles include Kim Yong-hoon’s critically-acclaimed South Korean crime thriller Beast Clawing at Straws, Sebastián Muñoz’s Queer Lion award-winning prison drama The Prince, Maja Milo’s controversial Clip which shocked festivals around the world, Dutch Berlinale winner Sacha Polak’s Hemel, and Craig Anderson’s Red Christmas, a festive slasher starring Dee Wallace. Upcoming new releases will be led by Stelios Kammitsis’ touching story of self-discovery The Man with the Answers, Gem Deger’s absurdly twisted and visually stunning Playdurizm, and Sam Quah’s gripping box-office smash Sheep Without a Shepherd, starring Joan Chen whose performance is “delightfully wicked” says AV Club.

Moving forward, Kino Lorber through its Artsploitation division will acquire all rights to 6-8 future theatrical titles per year to bring to market under the banner “Artsploitation, A Kino Lorber Company,” as well as numerous direct to digital and home entertainment releases. In addition, Kino Lorber will take over exclusive distribution of all previous Artsploitation titles for  all digital media,  home video, educational and repertory theatrical markets, adding to Kino Lorber’s distinguished library of over 4,000 acclaimed new and classic art house films.  Previously Kino Lorber handled ancillary media distribution for Artsploitation as a third party label, as it continues to do for select other companies including Zeitgeist Films, Cohen Media Group, Greenwich Entertainment,  Palisades Tartan, Virgil Films, Menemsha, Raro Video and more.

Ray Murray commented, "Artsploitation Films was formed in 2014 with the goal of presenting to North American audiences cutting edge international genre films with the vision and artistry of the best arthouse festival fare. For me, it has been exciting to grow our business and now I can think of no better company to take Artsploitation to the next level than Kino Lorber. I am certain that Richard and his strong team, veterans of the specialty film market, will expand the growth prospects while ever more boldly embracing the label's daring programming focus. I am  especially happy to begin working with the Kino Lorber team scouting for new film acquisitions."

Richard Lorber, CEO and President of Kino Lorber said, “We’ve admired and even envied the unique niche Ray has carved for his cannily named Artsploitation. There’s nothing dicier than scoring genre bending gems that earn art house kudos while jolting with pure cinema thrills, as the best of his films do. Ray had the vision and nose to root out genre-art hybrids that for others fell through the cracks but for him bridged a divide.  Now we’ve got him, his films and films to come in our corner. We’re thrilled to fire up Artsploitation as an ever more searing brand.”

About Kino Lorber
With a library of over 4,000 titles, Kino Lorber Inc. has been a leader in independent art house distribution for 35 years, releasing 30 films per year theatrically under its Kino Lorber, Kino Repertory and Alive Mind Cinema banners, garnering seven Academy Award® nominations in nine years. In addition, the company brings over 350 titles yearly to the home entertainment and educational markets through physical and digital media releases. With an expanding family of distributed labels, Kino Lorber handles releases in ancillary media for Zeitgeist Films, Cohen Media Group, Greenwich Entertainment, Artsploitation, Palisades Tartan, Virgil Films, Menemsha Film, Raro Video, and others, placing physical titles through all wholesale, retail, and direct to consumer channels, as well as direct digital distribution through over 40 OTT services including all major TVOD and SVOD platforms. In 2019, the company launched its new art house digital channel Kino Now which features over 1000 titles from the acclaimed Kino Lorber library. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kino Marquee initiative was launched in 2020 pioneering "virtual theatrical" releases of art house films with revenue shares that allows audiences to support almost 400 local independent theaters.

Newly Restored 4K Edition Of "Mackintosh and T.J." Starring The Legendary Roy Rogers In His Final Film Appearance Coming May 18th

Newly Restored 4K Edition Of "Mackintosh and T.J." Starring The Legendary Roy Rogers In His Final Film Appearance Coming May 18th

Featuring music by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson

Set for debut on Blu-ray and DVD via Verdugo Entertainment and MVD

On Tuesday, May 18th, Verdugo Entertainment will launch the newly restored 4K version of the 1975 classic Mackintosh and T.J. on Blu-ray and DVD. The modern day American western stars the legendary “King of the Cowboys” Roy Rogers, in his final feature film appearance.

Distributed by Verdugo Entertainment and MVD Entertainment Group, the film is also streaming now on Amazon Prime, Vudu, You Tube and Google Play.

Mackintosh and T.J. is described as “a moving photo album of ranch life in Texas in the mid-1970s.” Screenwriter Paul Savage, most known for his TV work in Wagon Train, Big Valley, and Gunsmoke, penned the film specifically with Roy Rogers in mind. The film is one of the few in which Roy Rogers did not play himself, portraying instead the title character of Mackintosh, a veteran ranch hand.

In the film, wandering through rural Texas ranch country, Mackintosh becomes a father figure for the young and homeless T.J. (Clay O’Brien) and helps him to stay on track. They land jobs on the ranch of Jim Webster, where Mackintosh proves his skills as a horse tamer. When a murder takes place, Mackintosh is framed which leads to dramatic events.

WATCH THE TRAILER

The film was restored to 4K from the original 35MM camera negative, including audio cleanup and went through a color correction process to match the original film. Colorist Sean Lawrence comments, “Our color correction approach was to try and be as true to the original intention and not impose modern color correction aesthetics. Were the filmmakers alive to see it, we would want them to feel that this matched their original vision.”

Mackintosh and TJ’s original score is by Waylon Jennings and the soundtrack features songs by Jennings and country music icon Willie Nelson.

The film was recently spotlighted in the What is a Western? Interview Series: Ranching, Rodeo and Roy Rogers produced by The Autry Museum and featuring a lively discussion with rodeo world champion Larry Mahan (who also has a role in the movie), and film historians C. Courtney Joyner and Stuart Rosebrook. The panelists discuss the realistic portrayal of 20th century rodeo and ranching life in movies, particularly in Roy Rogers’ final film, and explore the significance of the Western genre and the ways in which the movies shape our understanding of the American West.

Watch the full episode here:

“It isn’t a Roy Rogers movie, it’s a wonderful movie that Roy Rogers is in that reflects quite a bit of 1970’s sensibility,” says Joyner.

“Roy Rogers’ character Mackintosh seems to be an amalgamation of some of those characters we saw in Junior Bonner, J W Coop, The Honkers - men out of time, men who have values, who still follow the ‘Code of The West.’ So that message came across very strong,” comments Rosebrook.

“Producer Tim Penland wanted to do older style Westerns,” explains Mahan. “He had quite an extensive Christian background, and he wanted to get away from what he saw in Westerns, as there was too much violence, and he wanted to do something that was more in line with his values.”
