"ROMANS" Starring Orlando Bloom Lands US Distribution Deal with Saban Films

“ROMANS” STARRING ORLANDO BLOOM
LANDS U.S. DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH SABAN FILMS

TORONTO (September 6, 2018) – Saban Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Ludwig and Paul Shammasian’s Romans, starring Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean), Janet Montgomery (“Salem”, Black Swan), Charlie Creed-Miles (“Silent Witness”, The Fifth Element), Josh Myers (I am Soldier) and Anne Reid (Hot Fuzz, “Last Tango in Halifax”).  The drama is written by Geoff Thompson (The Pyramid Texts) and produced by Jasper Graham of Dreamscape along with James Harris and Mark Lane of The Fyzz Facility and Sheetal Vinod Talwar of Vistaar Film Fund, in association with Zee International.

Romans is the story of Malky (Bloom), a man who struggles to come to terms with the abuse he suffered by a local priest during his childhood.  Now set on demolishing the church in which the abuse took place, he finds himself on the unlikely path towards forgiveness.

“This is a heart-rending and sobering film,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “Ludwig and Paul have a powerful and timely story here, and Orlando really takes it home.”

“Romans is a brave film that tells a very delicate story and has strong performances that put you in the midst of it. We applaud the producers for taking the risk and are excited to have Saban Films as our domestic partner” says Moring of DDI.

The film made its World Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where Anne Reid took home the prize for Best Performance in a British Feature Film, and then went on to the Rome Film Festival.

Bill Bromiley and Ness Saban negotiated the deal for Saban Films with Double Dutch International’s Jason Moring, on behalf of filmmakers.

Saban Films continues to be active in the acquisition and distribution space, most recently landing Stephan Rick’s elevated genre The Super starring Val Kilmer, and following its recent activity acquiring a slew of films out of the Cannes Film Festival, including: Between Worlds starring Nicolas Cage; the anthology Berlin, I Love You with Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley and Jim Sturgess; the Gerard Butler starrer Keepers; and David L.G. Hughes’ Viking Destiny. Its current slate also includes: Craig William Macneill’s racy drama Lizzie, starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart; and Ivan Kavanagh’s Never Grow Old starring John Cusack and Emile Hirsch.

Since the company’s launch in 2014, Saban Films has released over 40 films with successes that have run the gamut from critically acclaimed theatrical films such as The Homesman, to one of the biggest Fathom events in 2016 with Rob Zombie’s horror thriller 31.

Recent releases include: Alexandre Moors’ The Yellow Birds starring Tye Sheridan, Alden Ehrenreich, Toni Collette, with Jason Patric, Jack Huston and Jennifer Aniston; Alexandros Avranas’ Dark Crimes starring Jim Carrey and Charlotte Gainsbourg; Roland Joffe’s The Forgiven starring Forest Whitaker and Eric Bana; Taran Killam’s Killing Gunther starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; Ric Roman Waugh’s Shot Caller starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lake Bell; War on Everyone starring Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Peña, and Theo James; The Girl with All the Gifts starring Gemma Arterton and Glenn Close; Brad Silberling’s war thriller An Ordinary Man starring Academy Award® Winner Ben Kingsley; and Ethan Hawke action thriller 24 Hours to Live.

"GET SHORTY: COLLECTOR'S EDITION" -- Home Viewers Will Thrill to the Loaded Blu-ray On 10/23 from Shout! Factory

"Smart...shrewdly crafted"
-- Richard Schickel, Time Magazine

"[An] irresistibly charming lampoon of Hollywood"

-- Hal Hinson, The Washington Post

DRUG-SMUGGLING. RACKETEERING. LOAN SHARKING.
WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD.

THIS OCTOBER, HOME AUDIENCES LOOKING FOR A BIG SCORE
WILL THRILL TO THE LOADED BLU-RAY EDITION OF
BARRY SONNENFELD'S STAR-FILLED CRIME CAPER

GET SHORTY: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito and Rene Russo star in this winning adaptation of Elmore Leonard's best-seller; featuring a new 4K HD scan, the collector's edition Blu-ray includes bonus features such as audio commentary with Barry Sonnenfeld, featurettes, a Get Shorty party reel and more!

Drug-smuggling. Racketeering. Loan sharking. Welcome to Hollywood! GET SHORTY, based on Elmore Leonards' 1990 crime novel of the same name, suggests it doesn't take much to make it in the movies ... when you've got a background with the mob. The Barry Sonnenfed-directed adaptation, called "crackingly energized" by Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman, arrives as a special Blu-ray release on October 23 from Shout Select. Sporting a new 4K HD scan, the GET SHORTY: COLLECTOR'S EDITION also features specially-created bonus programming including audio commentary with Barry Sonnenfeld, featurettes including "Look at Me" and "Wise Guys + Dolls", a Get Shorty Party Reel, vignettes and much more!

Loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) has done his time as a gangster. So when "business" takes him to L.A. to collect a debt from down-and-out filmmaker Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), Chili jumps headfirst into the Hollywood scene: He schmoozes a film star (Danny DeVito), romances a B-movie actress (Rene Russo) and even gets reservations at the hottest restaurants in town. In fact, all would be cool for this smooth new producer if it weren't for the drug smugglers and an angry mobster who won't leave him alone. But hey, this is Hollywood and no one said it would be easy. Joining the terrific ensemble cast are Dennis Farina, Delroy Lindo, James Gandolfini and Jon Gries.

In her New York Times review, Janet Maslin said the comedy "[joins] Clueless and To Die For as one more clever Hollywood satire with an enlightened sense of fun", David Ansen of Newsweek called it "bouncy...immensely likable" and Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun Times awarded it 3.5 stars, calling the crime caper "a small jewel".

Consumer interested in nabbing the Blu-ray prior to its release are invited to order the collector's edition directly from shoutfactory.com; it will ship two weeks early and, while supplies last, the order will include a free 18x24 rolled poster featuring brand new artwork.

Special Features:
Remastered from a new 4K transfer
Audio Commentary with Director Barry Sonnenfeld
Featurettes: "Get Shorty - Look at Me," " Get Shorty - Wise Guys + Dolls," "Going Again"
Get Shorty Party Reel

Dead Girl Blinks: "Carnival of Souls" Blooper (1962) (video)

(This is a MAJOR SPOILER, so if you haven't seen the movie you may not want to watch this yet.)

Early in the film, three girls are drowned in their car.
It is recovered after several days underwater.

But just as the camera moves in...
...the "dead girl" in the middle blinks.

Nevertheless, it's still one of the scariest low-budget horror films ever made.

ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON -- DVD Review by Porfle

An interesting example of a long-running hit show that's beginning to wind down, ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON (Time-Life) shows how Dan and Dick and the rest of the cast did their best to keep the laughs going as the show headed into the sunset.

It's just as raucous and irreverent as ever, a colorful, fast-paced conglomeration of jokes, sight gags, blackouts, and song parodies that are both topical (for the early 70s) and timelessly silly.

Dan, the bourbon-breathed straight man, and Dick, the tipsy lothario with the mind of a child, are the merry ringmasters of it all, and it's nice to see how they still enjoy working together after all these years.

Sadly, most of the original cast are gone, with the brilliant comedienne Ruth Buzzy and perennial announcer Gary Owens the only holdovers from season one.  Occasional guest appearances from old-timers such as the hilarious Jo Anne Worley are welcome.

Some of the more stellar later additions to the cast are still around.  The great Lily Tomlin adds her classic characters Ernestine the telephone operator and bratty little Edith Ann, and Richard Dawson continues to brighten things up before heading for game show immortality.

Of this season's new cast members, only master ventriloquist Willie Tyler and his friend Lester truly shine.  Dumb blonde Sarah Kennedy is a shameless attempt at recapturing the inimitable charm of Goldie Hawn.  Others, such as Brian Bressler and Donna Jean Young, are non-descript.

Resolutely unfunny are newcomers Jud Strunk (who specializes in one-note rural New England characters) and Patti Deutsch, later to join Dawson as one of the celebrity panelists on "The Match Game." Strunk contributes one of the series' worst-ever moments by turning serious with a maudlin love ballad which he croons while plucking a banjo.

Even the production values are somewhat off this time, as though the budget had been reduced, and the comedy seems duller and less effortlessly outlandish as before.  The addition of an ever-present gaggle of showgirl types fawning over Dick and Dan doesn't help.

As always, the show offers up a dazzling collection of celebrity guests, particularly good-sport John Wayne in his infamous appearance in a giant bunny costume.  Other familiar faces include Johnny Carson, Janet Leigh, Ernest Borgnine, Sammy Davis, Jr., James Caan, Jack Benny, Carol Burnett, Howard Cosell, Angie Dickinson, Don Rickles, Steve Allen, Henny Youngman, Robert Goulet, William Conrad, Michael Landon, Sandy Duncan, Dom Deluise, and many more.

The 6-disc set from Time-Life is in 1:33.1 full screen with stereo sound and captions. Running time is 1234 minutes.  Included in the package is an illustrated booklet. Picture and sound quality are very good.

For avid fans of the show, ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON should prove as much fun as ever. But the bloom's off the rose, and it's fascinating to see how this once-unbeatable hit comedy series finally shuffled off into showbiz immortality.

Clumsy Stormtrooper Blooper in "Star Wars" (1977) (video)

Most Star Wars fans already know this one.

In one Death Star scene, three stormtroopers enter...
...and the clumsy one (far right) bangs his head on the doorframe.

Not only was the shot left in the movie...
George Lucas even added a sound effect later.

Lucas also referenced the goof in the prequel "Attack of the Clones"...
(in which we learn that the original stormtroopers are clones of Jango Fett)
...when the bounty hunter bangs his head entering his own ship.

Holy Celebration! Favorite Son Adam West To Be Honored Again In Walla Walla

QUICK, TO WALLA WALLA TO HONOR ACTOR AND FAVORITE SON ADAM WEST WITH SECOND ANNUAL ‘ADAM WEST DAY’ ON SEPT. 19

Day of festivities includes screening of West documentary, Bat Signal lighting, Q&A panels, music, and more

(WALLA WALLA, Wash.) — Holy Adam West Day Batman! On Wednesday, Sept. 19, Walla Walla will once again honor the life of its favorite son — known the world over as Batman and later the voice of Mayor Adam West on the show The Family Guy — in a way that only West’s hometown can.

Held on West’s birthday, as proclaimed by the City of Walla Walla in 2017, the Second Annual “Adam West Day” will include a day full of festivities. The event includes the grand opening of the Adam West Exhibit at the Kirkman House Museum, a showing of the West documentary “Starring Adam West”, an expert Q&A panel, the Batmobile and Batcopter, an official lighting of the Bat Signal, activities for kids, and much more.

The Walla Walla roots run deep for Adam West, who died on June 9, 2017, in Los Angeles. He was born in 1928 in Walla Walla as William West Anderson. He grew up in what was then a tiny southeastern Washington farming community, before moving to Seattle at age 15. After graduating from high school, he returned to Walla Walla and graduated from Whitman College.

In 1959, he changed his name to Adam West and began his acting career, famously portraying Batman in the 1960s television version of the comic book hero. Though he moved away from Walla Walla, he returned frequently throughout his life. And it seems most every longtime Walla Walla resident has a personal Adam West story to share.

“Adam West will always be beloved in Walla Walla, so it is with great excitement that Adam West Day has become an annual tradition,” said Ron Williams, executive director of Visit Walla Walla. “The first event, held just after he passed last year, was a heartfelt and fun occasion for both friends and fans and from both near and far. And we hope they return to Walla Walla again this year to celebrate Walla Walla’s favorite son.”

Walla Walla, the unofficial capital of Washington wine country with more than 120 wineries, knows how to throw a party. The Second Annual Adam West Day events include:

The grand opening of the Adam West exhibit at the Kirkman House Museum.
Q&A panel at The Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center in downtown Walla Walla with Ruben Procopio, an American animation and comic book artist, animator, and sculptor, who West once called his personal sculptor. Johnny Green, who played one of the Joker’s Henchmen during the famous “Surf’s Up” episode, will also be joining the panel.
A showing of the 1966 Batman feature film at The Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center.
A showing of the documentary “Starring Adam West” at the Gesa Power House Theatre in downtown Walla Walla.
Official lighting of the Bat Signal in the evening.
Live music and kids’ activities in the downtown Walla Walla Plaza.
The Adam West Experience, a joint effort of downtown Walla Walla businesses. Each participating business will display a bat sticker that indicates its involvement, which could include a special, a giveaway, or a drink or food item named in West’s honor. An award will be given to the three downtown businesses with the best decorations.
The Batmobile and Bat Copter at various events throughout the day.

“Last year’s inaugural Adam West Day was something so memorable,” said Jonathan Grant, front office manager at the Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center and a co-organizer of the event. “This year, for the Second Annual Adam West Day, we have even more exciting surprises in store. It will be such a special day to celebrate the life and legacy of our hometown hero and bright knight.”

For more information on planning a trip to Walla Walla, go to visitwallawalla.com. For more details on Adam West Day, visit www.adamwestday.com.

About Walla Walla:
As the unofficial capital of Washington wine country, Walla Walla is home to more than 120 wineries, a nationally recognized culinary scene, access to an abundance of outdoor recreation, and an arts & entertainment scene that rivals cities many times its size. This community of just over 30,000 residents is known for many things, including its friendliness and hospitality, the quality of its wine, and of course the famous Walla Walla Sweet Onion. An easy and scenic four-hour drive from Seattle, Portland, or Boise, Walla Walla can also be accessed via Alaska Airlines daily non-stop flights from Seattle. SHOW YOURSELF -- DVD Review by Porfle

Imagine if a sensitive, contemplative tale of emotional turmoil was peanut butter, and a spooky, blood-chilling ghost story was chocolate, and two guys collided on a street corner and got their peanut butter and chocolate all over each other.

The result might very well be SHOW YOURSELF (2016), but whether or not these two great tastes go great together is entirely up to the individual taster, or, in this case, viewer.

The premise is pregnant with possibilities either way the story goes, with semi-successful filmmaker Travis (Ben Hethcoat, THE BABYSITTER MURDERS, DEAR DAD) heading to a very secluded off-season rental cabin deep in the woods right after ducking out of an old friend's funeral with his ashes.  Travis is intent on spreading Paul's powered remains upon the very nature spots Paul once visited with Travis and Travis' girlfriend Nicole.

The cabin is a chance to really get away from it all, except for the fact that Travis' cell phone never stops ringing and he's always in contact with old friends who keep blathering about Paul (during which we learn that Paul committed suicide and Travis feels guilty about it) and his naggy, needy girlfriend who keeps blathering about their relationship.  I swear, I'd have that phone on the chopping block within my first five minutes there.

What really sets all this stuff into motion is when Travis starts experiencing little things here and there that seem to be of a paranormal bent.  Paul's urn  changes positions overnight, Travis wakes up with his eyebrows half shaved off (reminiscent of a prank he once played on Paul), and there are knocks on the front door at night but nobody there when he opens it.

The scary stuff really shifts into high gear when Travis goes way deep into the woods and sets up a camping site complete with tent.  I won't go into what happens, but suffice it to say that if the filmmakers had chosen to go that route, and poured more effort into it, this movie might've produced some serious goosebumps.

But as that's happening we keep being reminded that the most important part of the story is Travis' guilt over not being a good enough friend to Paul and his possibly even being a reason for Paul's suicide.

In other words, the scary parts are always leveled out by the soul-searching, introspective parts, and neither is really fleshed out as well as they could've been.

The dramatic aspects do eventually get resolved to a reasonable extent, and those not disappointed by the fact that this otherwise competently-made film isn't a wall-to-wall scarefest (whose supernatural elements may actually be occurring only in Travis' mind) might come away from it feeling quite satisfied.

Those expecting a genuine shocker, on the other hand, will have to settle for some pleasingly spooky goings-on earlier in the cabin and a few promising shocks during the long, dark night of Travis' camping trip.

And so SHOW YOURSELF is a hard one to decide whether or not to recommend.  You may feel that one or both of the two main ingredients hasn't been sufficiently developed, or you might very well find the combination to be just right.

Coming Soon: Paranormal Doc "HUNT FOR THE SKINWALKER" Based on NY Times Best-Selling Book

A FILM DECADES IN THE MAKING

HUNT FOR THE SKINWALKER will be available to own on digital September 11 and to stream on demand September 19

Based on the best-selling book by George Knapp & Dr. Colm Kelleher, HUNT FOR THE SKINWALKER investigates the confidential, most extensive scientific study of a paranormal hotspot in human history.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

Skinwalker Ranch in Utah is famous throughout the world because of the myriad of frightening, seemingly supernatural events that have been reported in the scenic basin surrounding the property for hundreds of years. Sightings include orbs, UFOs, animal mutilations, unknown creatures, poltergeist-type activity, and many other inexplicable incidents.

An exhaustive, multidisciplinary scientific study began in 1996, spearheaded by an enigmatic Las Vegas billionaire named Robert Bigelow. A team of PhD-level investigators was deployed to collect evidence and spent more than a decade on the ground, interviewing witnesses, searching for explanations, and directly confronting an unknown intelligence.

Recent headlines have revealed that a second, government-funded but confidential study was initiated by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). This second investigation was designed to determine if the phenomena at the ranch might have national security implications or could point to technological breakthroughs.

The shroud of mystery hanging above Skinwalker Ranch and the Utah Basin has fascinated director Jeremy Corbell (Patient Seventeen) for years. He finally journeyed to the property to interview eyewitnesses - including the new owner of the ranch - and uncover rare, previously unreleased recordings.

A Message from Rose McGowan on Asia Argento

I would first of all like to start off this statement saying thank you for your patience. A lot of people have been demanding answers and a response to the recent events surrounding Asia Argento’s sexual assault case. Many people believe that because we have been close in each other’s lives over the past year that perhaps I am affiliated with this incident or being complicit. I am not.

I first met Asia on a red carpet, but it’s only been the past year through our shared experience of the HW case that we have bonded. Asia was a person who understood my trauma in a way that many others didn’t. We were able to talk through them together and champion each other’s voices. We even got matching dot tattoos! Something I had posted on my IG just about a month ago. It’s no secret to anyone that Im a blunt, candid, brazen individual vocally- and I think that’s what I really related to Asia the most with. They were edgy, confrontational, and strong willed with very little care about how much other’s liked or disliked them. Rare things to find in women in this industry or the world.

But then everything changed. In an instant. I received a phone call and series of messages from the being I’ve been dating- Rain Dove. They said that they had been texting with Asia and that Asia had revealed that she had indeed slept with Jimmy Bennet. Rain also shared that Asia had stated that she’d been receiving unsolicited nudes of Jimmy since he had been 12. Asia mentioned in these texts that she didn’t take any action on those images. No reporting to authorities, to the parents, or blocking of Jimmy’s social media. Not even a simple message “Don’t send me these images. They are inappropriate.” There were a few other details revealed as well that I am not at liberty to mention in this statement as investigators do their job.

Rain Dove said that they were going to go to the police with these texts once we were done speaking no matter what. But that they wanted me to be aware of them so that I may be able to take further actions. I responded with “You have to. You must.” I wasted no time. It wasn’t hard to say or support. What was hard was the shell shock of the realisation that everything the MeToo movement stood for was about to be in jeopardy. An hour after our conversation was finished Rain Dove confirmed that they had turned over the texts and were in conversation with officers. Almost 48 hours later the texts were in the press.

I had introduced Rain Dove to Asia Argento last month, three days after the passing of Anthony Bourdain. I was with Asia to comfort and support her. Rain Dove came to support us both. It was an emotionally chaotic time and Rain Dove suggested we go to Berlin for a couple days to take the mourning out of Asia’s home and into a neutral space. So we did. While in Berlin Asia had mentioned that she was being extorted for a large sum of money every month by someone who was blackmailing them with a provocative image. No one in the room knew who the extortionist was. Now we know it to be a reference to this case.

Rain Dove continued on communicating with Asia occasionally after meeting her- and their conversations have been their own. I know Rain is a person to whom many high profile entities consult when they are experiencing social pressures because Rain is good at guiding them through the research confrontation, rehabilitation, and solution process. While they are a person who is good at keeping a secret for those dedicated to making things right- they are also justice driven. So it was not a surprise to me that I received that call and the messages from them. I’ve referred to Asia in the past as “My Ride or Die” and said very clearly that their friendship comes first. I know that coming to me with those messages must have been hard for Rain because of that so I commend them for their bravery.

To the people who have checked in with me to see if I’m alright- the answer is thank you and Yes. I’ll be fine. Its sad to lose a friend connection, but whats even more sad is what happened to Jimmy Bennet. Whether or not the extortion case is true- it wasn’t fair and it wasn’t right. It is the type of thing I fight against alongside so many. The reason I haven’t released a statement is because I’ve frankly been extremely humbled by this event. I had to take a step back and realise that in my own activism while I fight hard with passion- I need to evolve. In the past I have been occasionally angry. As a victim I was justified in fiery feelings. But I know that those accused are the friends, parents, and family members of other people. There absolutely should be no leeway or tolerance for sexual assault. Hard stop. NONE. Victims also shouldn’t be told how they should react or what they should say about their abusers. However as allies to the victim and voyeurs of an event we should find a better way to balance support of the victim with due process for the accused. I’ve never claimed to be perfect. This week especially has made me come to terms with the fact that we all have a lot of growing to do, including myself.

At this current moment it may be easy to focus on the drama of the situation. The conspiracy. But the real focus should be on supporting justice. Supporting honesty. And supporting each other. We can not let this moment break the momentum of a movement that has freed so many people. We must use it to allow us to become stronger. More compassionate. More aware. And More organised.

Asia you were my friend. I loved you. You’ve spent and risked a lot to stand with the MeToo movement. I really hope you find your way through this process to rehabilitation and betterment. Anyone can be be better- I hope you can be, too. Do the right thing. Be honest. Be fair. Let justice stay its course. Be the person you wish Harvey could have been.

DIANE -- Movie Review by Porfle

Director Michael Mongillo (BEING MICHAEL MADSEN) has applied his visual skills to creating a murder mystery, DIANE (2017), that's nice to look at, especially when the camera focuses on lovely actress Carlee Avers in the title role as a struggling singer whose dead body, clad only in underwear and an overcoat and stabbed with a screwdriver, is found in the backyard of a wounded war veteran who lives alone.

The screenplay by Mongillo and Matt Giannini is equally engaging as we follow the consequences that Steve (Jason Alan Smith, THE LIGHTKEEPERS) must endure after discovering the body and being accused of murder by not only his boorish neighbors and various shopkeepers but also by some of the most insufferably smug police detectives ever committed to film (kudos to these actors for bringing such cretins to life).

The first half of the film pretty much belongs to Smith as the likable but terminally distant loner Steve, whose limp is just the most obvious sign of his deep war wounds.

We know he's a bit off right from the start when, upon finding the dead Diane in his backyard, his first impulse is to snap a picture of her on his phone because she is, as he will later admit to the police, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.

After that the film settles into a languid, noirish, slowburn sort of narrative that I was able to easily settle into as well, since the mystery of Diane's death and Steve's growing obsession with her--he often stares at her picture while imagining them together in various situations--are presented with a sort of hypnotic quality that effortlessly strung me along as I awaited further revelations.

The story gets darker and creepier when Steve installs a used VHS surveillance camera and intently watches the crime scene until strange things start to happen--supernatural things, apparently, or at least in his fevered mind.  Elements of the ghostly thriller begin to creep in when flashes of Diane on the TV screen and seemingly in real life start to haunt Steve's mind both awake and asleep.

My favorite scenes are those in which Steve must deal with a couple of those oafish neighbors who "don't like a killer living on their street" and then gets taken in by the cops for the full interrogation treatment.  Here, Jason Alan Smith's low-key, effective performance carries the film and holds our interest quite adequately.

It's what comes not long after the halfway mark, however, that left me feeling ambivalent about DIANE. The increased presence of Carlee Avers is good--she's an appealing actress and I enjoyed watching her in the several scenes she's afforded later in the film--but the way the story works itself out was, for me, a letdown.  While I liked this movie very much for most of the way, I found its resolution distinctly anti-climactic.

Diane will open in Los Angeles September 7th at the Arena Cinelounge Sunset, followed by a launch on Cable and Digital HD, including iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play and Vudu, on September 17th.

DEAD ENVY -- Movie Review by Porfle

For his feature debut as writer (with Stacy Hullah), director, and star, Harley Di Nardo delivers a textbook example of slick, efficient, eye-pleasing filmmaking that pretty much gets everything right.

The result, DEAD ENVY (2017), isn't the most nailbiting thriller you'll ever see, but it delivers the goods at the end and gives us a fun ride on the way there.

The premise is familiar--washed-up rock singer David Tangiers (Di Nardo) is trying to break back into the big time while struggling to keep a chic hairstyling salon going with the help of his faithful wife Cecily (Samantha Smart).

Enter Javy (Adam Reeser), a fervent fan with his own hopes of making it in the music business.  The seemingly nice young man ingratiates himself with David and Cecily to the point of getting a job at the salon, but after that his fascade of niceness eventually begins to fade and reveal an inner instability and even perhaps psychosis.

All the expected plot complications follow--Javy, while pretending to be a well-meaning admirer, begins to ruin David's life from the inside.  He sabotages his salon business, botches his potential musical comeback deals, and, worst of all, tries to come between him and Cecily by setting him up and then blackmailing him (anonymously, of course).

The bad vibes build as David considers submitting Javy's terrific demo disc (we're told it's terrific anyway) as his own creation, but the story takes its nastiest turn when Javy's really, really dark side begins to emerge.

I don't want to reveal too much, but the story's simmering suspense just keeps rising in a sort of Hitchcockian way until finally things boil over into a tense, tightly-staged, and exciting life-or-death finale.

In addition to Di Nardo's aforemention skills as a filmmaker, all of this is helped immeasurably by some very capable and (fortunately) admirably understated performances--no histrionics or frantic eye-rolling here, just some good actors giving us convincing characters that sell the somewhat outlandish story and  make us care about them.

The supporting cast is small, but among them I liked Carla Wynn as Dawn, an eccentric spiritualist whose gets visions of future peril as soon as Javy touches her hair (which everyone ignores, of course), and Chrissy Bonilla as Sam, a hairstylist who also takes an instant dislike to Javy and is similarly ignored (her fate is chilling).

As a suspense thriller, DEAD ENVY is one of those really nicely-done efforts that starts slow and builds just enough to keep stringing us along until the payoff.  I like the characters and the actors playing them, and I enjoyed letting this gripping little movie have its way with me for awhile.
