Los Angeles, CA - Invincible Pictures has announced the February 28th Cable VOD and Digital HD release of Ashley Avis' Deserted.  Mischa Barton ("The O.C.", The Sixth Sense) stars as a recently released felon looking to start fresh with the brother she left behind. 

A trip to the desert sounds perfect, until she, her brother and their group find themselves hopelessly lost in one of the most beautiful but unforgiving places on the planet.

When twenty-four-year old Jae (Barton) is released from prison, she returns home to small-town Ridgecrest, California. It's the last place she wants to be, with the judgement of the town, old friends, and old ghosts. She decides to join her brother Robin (Davis) and his girlfriend Rosemary (Zoli) on a road trip to "Burn the Moon", a music festival in Death Valley.

Linking up with a trio of idiosyncratic characters along the way, the group ends up getting impossibly lost amongst the three-million acres of salt flats, sand dunes, vistas and winding dirt roads. To survive they will have to overcome both the dangerous terrain and each other.

In The Great Wall, Damon stars as William Garin, a battle-scarred mercenary and master archer taken captive by a secret army of elite warriors known as The Nameless Order.  In a vast military outpost called the Fortress City, they fight to protect humanity from supernatural forces upon one of the greatest defensive structures ever built: The Great Wall. 

On his journey, Garin is joined by PEDRO PASCAL (Netflix’s Narcos, HBO’s Game of Thrones) as his sword-wielding sidekick, Pero Tovar, a tough, wise-cracking Spaniard who has become a brother-in-arms to William; and two-time Oscar®-nominee WILLEM DAFOE (Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, The Grand Budapest Hotel) as Ballard, a shadowy prisoner inside the fortress who plans his escape from his longtime captors while hoping to pilfer their greatest weapon during his getaway.
 
Toplining the production’s esteemed, superstar Chinese cast are a widely celebrated Asian industry veteran and one of its rising new stars.  The renowned Hong Kong actor ANDY LAU (House of Flying Daggers, Running Out of Time, Infernal Affairs) reunites with director Zhang as Strategist Wang, the sage alchemist inside the fortress…whose clever inventions help its inhabitants keep the monstrous forces at bay. 

He is joined by breakout actress JING TIAN (Special ID, Police Story 2013, The Man from Macau) as Lin Mae, the fearless fighter and leader of the fortress’ balletic, gravity-defying aerial warriors, the allfemale Crane Corps.  In turn, she ultimately rises to command the outpost’s entire military faction, The Nameless Order, against the creature attacks.
 

The film also features a supporting cast of seasoned Chinese talent that includes veteran actor HANYU ZHANG (Assembly, The Taking of Tiger Mountain) as General Shao, the patriarch who passes his command of the fortress’ troops to Lin Mae; LIN GENGXIN (Bubu jingxin, The Taking of Tiger Mountain) as Commander Chen, the leader of the Eagle Corps, the crossbow marksmen who skillfully brandish the weapon with deadly accuracy; EDDIE PENG YU-YEN (Jump Ashin!, Rise of the Legend) as Commander Wu, who leads the Tiger Corps, the fortress’ engineering and artillery forces, against the supernatural enemy; XUAN HUANG (Breaking the Waves, The Golden Era) as Commander Deng, leader of the fortress’ cavalry, the Deer Corps; ZHENG KAI (China’s TV hit Running Man) as Shen, Strategist Wang’s imperial liaison whose political agenda conflicts with The Nameless Order’s mission; and CHEN XUEDONG (the Tiny Times 1.0 trilogy) as one of the fortress’ Imperial Guards who will readily sacrifice himself to save the empire’s royalty. 

The Great Wall also welcomes to its cast a pair of China’s pop-music sensations—LU HAN (the band EXO) as Peng Yong, a soldier struggling under the command of the Bear Corps’ Gen. Shao who must overcome his fear and prove himself heroic during the creature onslaught; and JUNKAI WANG (frontman for China’s TFBOYS), who makes his professional acting debut as The Emperor, the 17-year-old royal ruler tested before his time. 

They are joined by a pair of young Chinese actresses who portray lieutenants in Lin Mae’s Crane Corps—YU XINTIAN (Death Is Here 3 & 4) and LIU QIONG, a student at Beijing’s Central Academy of Drama who, like Junkai Wang, makes her professional acting debut in the film.  

For the epic fantasy-adventure, Zhang has assembled a topnotch technical team behind the cameras.  This includes two-time Academy Award®winning production designer JOHN MYHRE (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha);costume designer MAYES C. RUBEO (Warcraft, Avatar); editors MARY JO MARKEY (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Trek) and CRAIG D. WOOD (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Rango); and cinematographers STUART DRYBURGH (The Piano, Once Were Warriors, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) and ZHAO XIAODING (his 10th collaboration with ZHANG YIMOU, one that began with House of Flying Daggers), who utilized for the first time the Aeroflex Alexa 65 camera, capturing the fantasy in grand 6K resolution while bringing a new level of visual fidelity to the big screen. 

Joining this team are five-time Oscar® winner RICHARD TAYLOR (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), whose WETA Workshop designed the film’s vast arsenal of weaponry; and visual effects supervisor PHIL BRENNAN (Snow White and the Huntsmen, The Wolverine), who teams up with ILM Far East VFX supervisor SAMIR HOON (Star Trek Into Darkness, Hitman Agent 47) to create the story’s predatory Tao Tei creatures.

It's her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth's actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. Beatles Fan Film "Here There And Everywhere" Goes Into Production

HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE, THE BEATLES FAN FILM GOES INTO PRODUCTION!

New York, NY. February, 2017 - Production starts later this month on ‘Here There & Everywhere’ [HTAE], a landmark documentary film project, supported by The Cavern Club, The Beatles Story Museum, The Hard Days Night Hotel, The Fest For Fans, Abbey Road on the River and The British Beatles Fan Club, and many others.

The film, shooting throughout this year and released in the summer of 2018, is an 80-minute ‘love letter’ spanning the band’s history as seen through the eyes, felt through the hearts and as told through the memories of the fans . . . from those who organize the fan festivals and tribute concerts... the Club and event runners who keep the fans together, the memorabilia collectors who amaze and delight with their rare and unseen photographs and films. . . to the authors who continue to breathe fresh life into the never-ending magical mystery tour.

HTAE pays homage to the global family, showcasing their contributions towards fueling The Beatles eternal flame. HTAE is The Beatles story as told by the fans and an important part of The Beatles future archive legacy! As part of the ongoing production the producers will also encourage artists and animators around the world to include their Beatles-inspired interludes in the film.

But perhaps most importantly, if fans have a story to tell, then they can get in touch and the producers will look to include contributors and their stories in the film. Many artists and bands will pack HTAE with performances. And special licensed recordings will also be produced, featuring musicians and vocalists from around the world, creating a global Beatles soundtrack. The film will also feature a “surprise” finale, to be announced over the months ahead.

The film will be launched at a number of iconic venues after release, with a TV broadcast release at the conclusion of the project.

 

The team behind the film: 
 
Simon Weitzman is the film’s director and the publisher, producer and author on three recent Beatles books. Simon also has 18 years’ experience as a network TV director, working for BBC, ITV, Channels 4 & 5, Sky, HBO and Disney International Television Productions.

David L Simon is one of the two executive producers. He launched and managed Disney International Television Productions, was head of DreamWorks Television Animation under Steven Spielberg, and was vice president of programming for Fox Television Stations. David is also a lifelong Beatles fan The second executive producer The British Beatles Fan Clubs very own Pete Nash, Chairman and magazine Editor of the legendary Club magazine.

Contributors to the Pledge Music campaign will receive a signed DVD of the movie before the launch.

By 1933, Prohibition has proven a booming enterprise, where average citizens break the law, hide in the shadows and operate at night. The new world order has even lined the pockets of corrupt cops like Jack Malone (McFadden). He collects a 'luxury tax' from every bootlegger and scofflaw in the small town he has sworn to protect. OPEN WINDOW -- Movie Review by Porfle

A devastating rape and its lingering aftermath in the lives of a woman and her fiance' are the subjects of OPEN WINDOW (2007), writer-director Mia Goldman's fictionalized account of a true incident in her own life.

Robin Tunney plays Izzy, an aspiring photographer, and Joel Edgerton (THE GIFT, LOVING, young "Owen Lars" of REVENGE OF THE SITH) is her future husband, Peter. When Izzy is violently raped in her backyard studio while Peter's at work, his desperate attempts to comfort her are rejected as she withdraws from life and spends her days languishing in bed. Thus begins a long, painful process of separation between the two until they've fully distanced themselves from one another.

Izzy's parents try to help, which subjects us to Cybill Shepherd in full brassy-flouncy mode while Elliot Gould simply Elliot Goulds his way though it all.

Shirley Knight appears as a wise therapist who manages to help Izzy get her head back on a little straighter, though she has little to do besides smile knowingly and ask delicately probing questions.

Scott Wilson (IN COLD BLOOD, THE RIGHT STUFF, "The Walking Dead") plays Peter's ailing father, and another SITH alumnus, Ahmed Best, pops up briefly for all you Jar-Jar Binks fans.

This is one of those movies that you feel obligated to appreciate no matter how unpleasant or boring it gets, lest you feel insensitive and uncaring towards its important message. Unfortunately, the movie just keeps hammering us over the head with it until Tunney's character finally becomes cold and insufferable.

I get it...she's experienced something horrible beyond words. I get it...none of us, especially us guys, can ever fully understand what she's going through. I get it, I get it, I get it.

We must continue to sympathize with her even while she's punishing Peter for not knowing exactly what he should do or say, or for trying too hard to help her, or for even being there at all.

And, of course, any time she's finally ready to warm up to him again for a brief moment, he's in the process of withdrawing from her withdrawal.

So they keep frustratingly going nowhere, like two people darting from side-to-side trying to get past one another on the sidewalk, until at last she packs up and moves out. I found all of this rather tiresome, and then felt guilty for feeling that way.

I'm sure that writing and directing OPEN WINDOW was a meaningful and cathartic experience for Mia Goldman, who based the story on her own real-life ordeal--which sounds even worse than the one depicted in this film--while working on location as an editor for the film CRAZY PEOPLE in 1989.

"I wanted to show how the act violates not only the woman, but also the man--and how it creates circles of pain that may extend to the entire family," Goldman explains. She certainly succeeds in doing so, and very well. So well, in fact, that the circles of pain also extend to the viewer.

Goldman deserves to tell her story to the world, which she does fully and eloquently in OPEN WINDOW. This is surely a great tool for rape counseling, and for helping others begin to comprehend what the experience does to the victim and those around her.

But for the casual viewer seeking entertainment, it's slow, depressing, and yes, dull. Unless you happen to like melodramatic suffer-thons laden with maudlin piano and violins, because it's also that.

BERLIN (February 4, 2017) –– BLOOM has taken international rights to The Strangers 2, the sequel to the 2008 hit which grossed over $82 million worldwide. Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door, 47 Meters Down) is on board to direct from a script written by Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the original, and Ben Ketai. The Fyzz Facility Pictures’ Wayne Marc Godfrey (The Foreigner, The Survivalist), Robert Jones (Centurion, The Usual Suspects), Mark Lane & James Harris (47 Meters Down, I Am Not A Serial Killer) are producing, in association with Relativity Media. BLOOM will be handling international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin.

The Strangers 2 follows a family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park and after the power goes out they decide to hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer. Under the cover of darkness three familiar masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit. Casting is underway with the US based shoot scheduled for the Summer.

UNIQUE PERFORMANCE STAGED TO CELEBRATE THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW TOYOTA C-HR

London, 3rd February 2017: Last night, actress and model Milla Jovovich starred alongside a cast of talented faces from across Europe, in the world’s first drive through immersive theatre experience.

The seven-scene interactive production - entitled ‘The Night That Flows’ - was staged within the immense space of The Printworks in London. The experience saw 100 guests immersed in the story of one amazing fictional night as it unfolded across five European cities, including Berlin, Milan, Paris, Barcelona and London.

The story, narrated throughout by Milla Jovovich, centred around guests finding their perfect flow and took inspiration from the ‘flowing’ design of the new Toyota C-HR - created to look like it is always moving, even when at a standstill.

Participants were thrust into the limelight as part of the event, taking centre-stage in the live multi-sensory performance and interacting with a variety of different characters as they made their way through the myriad of scenes.

Each scene brought with it unexpected twists and exciting scenarios, all inspired by key features of the car - from the dynamic drive and stylish diamond design, to the sophisticated interior and JBL concert hall sound system.

The journey began in Berlin, where guests were transported through the streets of the city in the C-HR using innovative projection footage captured at the Berlin International Festival of Light.

From Berlin, guests flowed seamlessly into Milan where they experienced their very own taste of a high fashion catwalk, complete with paparazzi. Following their catwalk moment, guests were led by Fabio Attanasio, Italian fashion designer and founder of ‘The Bespoke Dudes’, and Italian model Giorgia Palmas, into the backstage preparations of an Italian fashion show. Completely enclosed in a mirrored space, the C-HR became the star of the unique fashion show, revolving a full 360 degrees so that every angle of the car’s dynamic design and elegantly integrated detail was exposed.

Propelled into a Parisian casino, guests joined an excitable crowd gathered around a roulette table, as French croupier Etienne Pradier invited them to take part in a game of chance. No sooner had they placed their bets on the roulette table, they were greeted by French rally driver Guerlain Chicherit, who led them in an exhilarating drive around a giant projected roulette table, showcasing the car’s driving dynamics, fluid motion and controlled responses.

Travelling through to the next city, Barcelona, guests were surrounded by a flash-mob style club scene, with Spanish DJ Cuartero leading the crowd as the soundtrack played out over the C-HR’s JBL sound system.

The journey concluded with guests arriving in a London bar, where they were greeted by the innovative mixologist duo, Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale and joined by Milla herself.

The event was created by a team comprised of some of the world’s finest theatrical and technical design talent, all brought together under The Department's Creative Directors Jonny Grant and Hamish Jenkinson, with Jessica Rees Middleton as Executive Producer.

HAVENHURST -- Movie Review by Porfle

Well-made and effective, HAVENHURST (2016) is one of those horror movies that's so intensely suspenseful that it may have you reaching for the ulcer medicine before it's over.

As recovering alcoholic Jackie, a dark-haired Julie Benz conveys the same wounded vulnerability that defined her character on "Dexter."  This time, however, she's still grieving over the loss of her young daughter during a drunken mishap and struggling against a perpetual craving to hit the sauce again.

When her rehab group locates her in the very same apartment from which her friend Danielle (cult fave Danielle Harris) disappeared without a trace, Jackie quickly begins to suspect some kind of foul play going on within the massive old Victorian building.

(We've already seen Danielle and her cokehead boyfriend get murdered by an unseen maniac in the first scene, SCREAM-style, so we're way ahead of her.) 

Other tenants are shown being terrorized and killed in nasty ways, all of which director and co-writer Andrew C. Erin renders with ample style and creepy-old-house Gothic atmosphere. 

While much of the film's first half is straight thriller stuff, there are a couple of key scenes that are surprisingly over-the-top gory.  This is especially true of the fate which befalls the abusive foster father of Sarah (Belle Shouse, A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST), a troubled little girl from the building whom Jackie befriends.

Venerable actress Fionnula Flanagan (SLIPSTREAM, KILL THE IRISHMAN) already creeped us out in THE OTHERS and gets to do so again here as the building's oddball owner, Eleanor, who may know a thing or two about the strange goings-on, as might her overgrown handyman son, Ezra (Matt Lasky, INALIENABLE). 

The film doesn't really keep us all that much in the dark, so to speak, about who's behind it all as much as how and why.  Jackie's very obliging cop friend Tim (Josh Stamberg) helps her follow the clues, but most of the suspense comes from Jackie and Sarah doing the Nancy Drew bit themselves as they worm their way into the hidden inner workings of that creepy old building and ever closer to grave peril.

And it's here that HAVENHURST really gets you in the gut.  Not really all that truly scary, it's one of the most painfully suspenseful horror flicks I've seen in a long time.  Director Erin is a whiz at keeping our nerves stretched taut and our rear ends on the edge of our seats for sustained periods of time.

What he's not so good at, unfortunately, is wrapping it all up in satisfactory fashion, unless you happen to be one of those movie masochists who enjoy having your emotional investment in a film rewarded by an abruptly downbeat ending that leaves you with a sour stomach.

HAVENHURST is a well-crafted, nailbiting ride, but you might want to have a bottle of Pepto-Bismol handy at the fadeout.

Origin Unknown is being directed by Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dullul (Project Kronos, Sync) an award nominated visual effects artist (Hell Boy II, The Dark Knight) who recently signed on to direct the much-anticipated Robin Hood reboot, Robin Hood 2058, produced by Atlas Entertainment (Suicide Squad, Batman vs Superman, Warcraft) and Gianni Nunnari (Immortals, 300). While simultaneously directing music videos and commercials, HaZ transitioned into scripted fare with his Sci-fi short film Project Kronos, which became an Internet hit on YouTube and Vimeo.

The screenplay for Origin Unknown is written by Gary Hall based on a story by Dulull. The director of photography is Adam Sculthorp (aerial unit on ‘Prometheus’, ‘Spectre”). The VFX will be handled by Territory Studio (‘The Martian’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, Blade Runner 2, Alien Covenant), Paddy Eason is the VFX Supervisor (’28 Weeks Later’, ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’) and Michael Stevens (‘Million Dollar Baby’, ‘Invictus’, Gran Torino) will compose.

After the first manned mission to Mars ends in a deadly crash, mission controller Mackenzie ‘Mack’ Wilson (Sackhoff) is summoned to assist an artificial intelligence system – A.R.T.I Their investigation uncovers a mysterious object under the surface of Mars, leading to a discovery that could change the future of our planet as we know it.

Principal photography begins later this month in London, UK.

Origin Unknown is being financed by Head Gear Films and Parkgate Entertainment; Phil Hunt and Compton Ross of Head Gear Films are Executive Producers on the project.

BLOOM to Commence International Sales at the upcoming European Film Market

LOS ANGELES (February 1, 2017) –– Academy Award® Winner Mel Gibson (Braveheart) and Vince Vaughn (Hacksaw Ridge, Wedding Crashers) will star in Dragged Across Concrete, written and to be directed by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk).  The film will mark another production for Keith Kjarval of Unified Pictures and financed by the recently announced Unified Film Fund I slate, which is partnered with Look to the Sky Films.

The fund, comprised of Victory Square Labs and its equity partner Fantasy 360 (FYS:CN)(OTC:FNTYF)(6F6.F) along with The Fyzz Facility, was announced at the most recent Cannes. The film will also be produced by Zahler’s frequent collaborators, Dallas Sonnier under his new Cinestate banner, and Jack Heller of Assemble Media.  BLOOM will commence international sales on the thriller at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, with WME Global representing the U.S. rights.

A stolid, old guard policeman, Ridgeman (Gibson) and his volatile younger partner, Anthony (Vaughn), find themselves suspended when a video of their strong-arming tactics become the media's special du jour.  Low on cash and with no other options, these two embittered soldiers descend into the criminal underworld to gain their just due, but instead find far more than they wanted awaiting them in the shadows.

Gibson and Vaughn most recently collaborated on the critically acclaimed and lauded war drama Hacksaw Ridge, which Gibson directed. The film received six Academy Award nominations including best picture and best director for Gibson.  Other accolades, Hacksaw Ridge won the AFI Movie of the Year Award, swept the 2017 Australian Film Academy’s prizes and earned three Golden Globe and two SAG nominations.

Zahler is currently in post-production on Brawl in Cell Block 99 which also stars Vaughn alongside Jennifer Carpenter and Don Johnson. He previously wrote and directed Indie Spirit Award nominated western Bone Tomahawk, starring Kurt Russell and Patrick Wilson.

"PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO" (1954) -- Olive Films Continues Record of Releasing Great Classic Serials

Olive Films highlights another under-appreciated serial with release of Panther Girl of the Kongo (1954)

Chicago, IL – Olive Films, a boutique theatrical and home entertainment distribution label dedicated to bringing independent, foreign, and classic films to DVD and Blu-ray, has announced that February 21st will be the release date of six new titles, including Republic’s under-appreciated penultimate serial, Panther Girl of the Kongo (1954).

“Panther Girl of the Kongo might not be as well remembered as other serials,” said Alex Kopecky of Olive Films, “but we feel it’s deserving of a place alongside our favorites, because it epitomizes a lot of the elements that we love about classic serials.”

Olive Films will release Panther Girl of the Kongo to DVD and Blu-ray on February 21st.  The second-to-last serial made by Republic Pictures, it came during the dusk of the film-going habits of the 1940s and early 1950s.

Still, serial fans will recognize many of their favorite classic tropes: a fiendish land grab plot, exotic jungle locations (by way of the Republic backlot), a near-comical mad scientist character, resourceful repurposing of old footage, and a no-nonsense absence of any dialogue not explicitly driving the plot forward. In addition to that, it echoes popular mutant monster elements of 1950s films by focusing on a giant “claw monster” created by a mad scientist.

Even audiences unfamiliar with serials can find plenty to enjoy in Panther Girl of the Kongo, namely the strong performance from Phyllis Coates, best known for her portrayal of Lois Lane several years earlier. In 1951, she played opposite George Reeves in his first Superman performance in the film Superman and the Mole-Men. She then reprised her role for the first season of the television series, Adventures of Superman. Today, she is the last surviving cast member of the iconic series.

It is also possible that audiences may recognize Panther Girl of the Kongo from its 1966 television run, in which twenty-six Republic serials aired as television movies.
