Extreme Product Placement in Marx Bros' "LOVE HAPPY" (1949) (video)

"Love Happy" was conceived as a solo vehicle for Harpo.

But, as usual, Chico needed the money. And Groucho got lured into it too.

Before it was over, the producers were short on cash as well... ...and sold ad-space in the movie.

Thus, the big chase finale is wall-to-wall product placement.

(See if you can spot the blooper in the Mobilgas shot at 1:15.)

THE FIFTH BIG VALLEY ELEMENT (video)

(Originally posted on 6/10/21)

Sometimes brilliant minds need to relax...

...by thinking of nonsensical things.

So I thought of this.

JAMES BOND: Breaking The Fourth Wall (video)

Sure, he's always shooting at us through that gun barrel.

But how often has James Bond really broken the 4th wall and acknowledged our presence?

Or even talked to us?

I count three, and here they are...

Sexy Eddie Pool Scene ("Fast Times At Ridgemont High"/"Christmas Vacation") (video)

If you've seen FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH (1982)...

...chances are you remember "that" scene with Phoebe Cates and Judge Reinhold.

And if you've seen any of the VACATION movies (CHRISTMAS VACATION in particular) you're also probably familiar with Randy Quaid as Clark Griswold's cousin "Eddie."

So, we thought: why not combine the two?

Well...it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The Day Corey Feldman Became Michael Jackson ("Dream A Little Dream", 1989) (video)

Before the film "Dream A Little Dream" (1989)...

...most people didn't know Corey Feldman could dance like Michael Jackson.

But after watching the film...

...most of them still didn't know.

Goofy G-Force Grimace In 1950s-60s Space Movies (video)

Space movies in the 1950s-60s speculated on what futuristic space travel would be like.

One of the most common features of these movies was the ever-popular "G-Force Grimace."

As a kid I could never figure out why they all made those weird girning faces during take-off.

ROCKETSHIP XM (1950)
DESTINATION MOON (1950)
PROJECT MOONBASE (1953)
CAT-WOMEN OF THE MOON (1953)
CONQUEST OF SPACE (1955)
MISSILE TO THE MOON (1958)
12 TO THE MOON (1960)

Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em ("FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE", 1956) (video)

For those of you who go in for drinking games, here's one...

Take a drink every time one of these low-rent astronauts lights up a cigarette.

With all the butts being lit up in this flick, you'll be blotto in no time!

Chico Marx Forgets His Lines In "THE COCOANUTS" (1929) (video)

Chico and Harpo are breaking Bob (Oscar Shaw) out of jail...

...because Bob's girlfriend Polly (Mary Eaton) is being forced to marry bad guy Harvey Yates.

But Chico can't remember the name "Harvey Yates" to save his life.

So Bob finally has to turn psychic and say it for him.

"She's gotta have you. Because tonight she gonna be, uh, engaged."
"To who?"
"To Polly. He's engaged to Polly."
"POLLY'S GOING TO MARRY YATES?"

Nice mind-reading there, Bob!

And to top it all off, Harpo gets his foot stuck in the door on the way out.

Amazing World-Class Bad Acting! ("BLOOD FEAST", 1963) (video)

Herschell Gordon Lewis' "Blood Feast" was the first major "gore" film.

Although Bill Kerwin is the only decent actor...

...the other actors are encouraged to emote wildly.

Thus giving us some truly, impressively bad performances...

...including that of Playboy Playmate of the Month (June 1963) Connie Mason.

Coolest Steven Seagal Ending Ever? ("URBAN JUSTICE", 2007)(video)

(SPOILER ALERT!)

As hokey as it may be...

...I think "Urban Justice" is one of the most fun Steven Seagal direct-to-DVD flicks.

It's a straightforward 70s-style action thriller.

And one of the best things about it...

...is what I consider to be a surprisingly cool ending.

The Blob terrorizes the town!

Steve McQueen does his best to stop it!

But all hope may, in fact, depend upon...

"STAR WARS" Death Star Finale With Countdown Music From "ALIENS" (video)

What if the Death Star attack finale in "Star Wars"...

...had the classic James Horner countdown music from "Aliens"?

This is what it might sound like.

The Star Wars no-music segment used in this video was created as a sound editing experiment by YouTube user If Blank Directed Blank.

Mary Pickford's Most Amazing Performance? ("Stella Maris", 1918)(video)

Mary Pickford plays a dual role in this film...

...which uses some surprisingly good split-screen effects.

One character is Stella, a standard Pickford beauty.

The other, Unity Blake, a scruffy, homely orphan...

...is completely opposite of Mary's usual persona.

Mary's transformation is an amazing testament to her acting ability. It's hard to believe the same actress plays both roles.

In one memorable scene, Unity visits an evil woman who has abused her terribly, and...

Dog Lifts Leg In "THUNDERBALL" (James Bond, 1965) (video)

Bond's in trouble...

Wounded, and chased by armed thugs...
...led by lovely but deadly Fiona Volpe (Luciana Paluzzi).

And as if that weren't enough...
Could that be Agent 00-K9, providing a distraction for Bond?

Oh well, they did say "Thunderball" would be Bond's wettest adventure yet.

Three Extras Killed Filming "NOAH'S ARK" (1928)(video)

During the key flood sequence, safety was ignored in favor of spectacle.

Extras were not warned of the severity of the water that would engulf them.

These included a young Marion "Duke" Morrison (John Wayne).

While the stars were doing their closeups...
...the unwary extras were being deluged by deadly torrents of water.

Their fear is real as they scramble for their lives.
Several extras were seriously injured.

Three of them were killed.

"MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN" Corkscrew Car Jump: NO Slide Whistle! (video)

The cartoony slide whistle always ruined the effect of this great stunt.

In fact, it may be the worst "comic" moment in a Bond film until the use of "California Girls" in "A View To A Kill."

So I took it out and replaced it with cool Bond music!

Blade Runner Scene Inspired By Original Star Trek? (video)

In the 7th "Star Trek" episode aired in 1966, "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", there's a scene...

...which looks remarkably similar to one that appeared in 1982's BLADE RUNNER.

In both scenes, the hero is hanging on for dear life...

...as a vengeful, hulking android stands over him with the power of life or death.

Did Ridley Scott see this scene, and was he inspired by it?

Judge for yourself!

Amazing Saloon Shot From "THE BARGAIN" (William S. Hart, 1914) (video)

When this movie was made in 1914...

...the "Old West" wasn't an ancient phenomenon, but a recent one.

The authenticity of this depiction is stunning.

Most of the props, costumes, and other paraphenalia are probably genuine.

As are, in many cases, the people themselves.

This lengthy, unbroken camera pan is a fascinating look at what a large, bustling saloon and its customers must've looked like.

And it's a great example of ancient filmmaking, when the medium was still being invented.
