If Movies Rick-Rolled Their Audiences (video)

Sure, it happens online.

But what if it happened while you were watching a movie for the first time and it was just getting to the good part?

Talk about a "popcorn-dropping moment."

Q: Where Did The "STAR WARS" Slanted Titles Concept Come From? A: Serials... (video)

Just as "Star Wars" was inspired by the "Flash Gordon" serials of the 30s and 40s...

...so was its distinctive slanted-font opening plot synopsis.

Several of the classic serials pioneered the use of this device.

Here are some of them...

Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe (1940)
Buck Rogers (1939)
The Green Hornet (1940)
The Phantom Creeps (1939)

All The Creature Scenes From "The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues" (1955) (video)

American Releasing Corporation would soon become American-International.

Unlike most of its kind, this film shows its monster right away.

Kent Taylor plays a biologist named "Ted Baxter."

The creature is the result of a scientific experiment gone wrong.

The film's budget was approximately $100,000.

This film was likely intended to capitalize on the popularity of an earlier film...

..."The Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954).

It was released on a double bill with "The Day The World Ended"...

...yielding a sizable profit from undemanding monster movie fans.

Bela Lugosi Destroys the Hindenburg in "The Phantom Creeps" (1939) (video)

"The Phantom Creeps" (1939) is one of the nuttiest serials ever made.

Bela Lugosi's "Dr. Zorka" gets up to a lot of weird mischief during its 12 chapters.

But nothing matches his final rampage, in which his quest to rule the world...

...culminates in dropping bombs from a biplane...

...with one of his targets being no less than the Hindenburg itself!
