TEENAGE GHOST PUNK -- Movie Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 4/12/17

The word "lightweight" is usually used in a deprecating way, but in the case of TEENAGE GHOST PUNK (Midnight Releasing, 2014) I don't think anything weightier would've worked.  It would be like dumping an entire pint of ice cream on top of a Twinkie instead of a tasty dollop of Cool Whip.

The Twinkie, in this case, is a pleasant little tale of a displaced family: recent divorcĂ©e Carol (Adria Dawn), nervously re-entering the workforce in a new town; teen daughter Amanda (Grace Madigan), angst-ridden about leaving her old school and friends; and kid brother Adam (Noah Kitsos), a prematurely intelligent, erudite little wiseacre who enjoys getting on his big sister's nerves.

What they don't know is that the neat little two-storey house they're about to move into is already inhabited by the ghost of Brian, a teenaged punk rocker who was electrocuted back in the 70s while playing guitar on the roof in the rain and has been unable, or unwilling, to "move on" since then.

At first, there are a few weird POLTERGEIST-type occurrences--rooms found in disarray, silverware spelling out words, bumps in the night--that Carol blames on the kids, but nothing really scary.  It's just lightly, comically spooky stuff because this movie isn't trying to scare us as much as it just wants to be lightly comical.

In fact, the funniest thing about TEENAGE GHOST PUNK to me isn't the ghostly stuff, but rather some of the secondary characters such as Squatchie (Jake Shadrake), a clumsy, extremely hirshute fellow student of Amanda's who keeps trying to get her to go out with him, and Carol's new co-worker Barry (Darren Stephens), a conceited jerk whose constant come-ons are delightfully annoying and groanworthy.

And then there's faux medium Madame Lidnar (Lynda Shadrake), recommended to Amanda by their new neighbors, a mixed-race gay couple who are both named Steve.  But best of all are a ghost-hunting group known as SPIT (Super Paranormal Investigation Team), a funny take-off of shows like "Ghost Hunters" where excitable team members creep around in the dark, jumping at shadows and "hearing" things.

For me, the film's biggest giggles come when this gaggle of idiots are loose in the house or giddily explaining why all their equipment has an "X" in the name (because an "X" makes everything sound cooler).

Naturally, Amanda will eventually form a simpatico relationship with Brian (and his friends, who all hail from different time periods but are equally stuck in the limbo between two worlds) that helps compensate for her recently being dumped by her old boyfriend.

There are the usual complications when Carol doesn't believe Amanda's ghost stories and blames her for various manifestations, and a twist or two that are so obvious that we must be intended to figure them out in one second flat.  But we know it'll all work itself out by the end because this movie has "happy ending" scrawled all over it.

It's all pretty smartly-written and acted in a way that makes even the less interesting scenes watchable, and writer-director Mike Cramer handles it all adeptly.  Still, by the time Amanda's Halloween party arrives--in which all ghosts will be visible to the living and all secrets revealed--the story has begun to lose some of its steam.  But by now it's as comfortable as an After School Special and remains easy to take until the upbeat fadeout.

TEENAGE GHOST PUNK may come up short for those expecting something with more depth and substance. For me, however, it's like a party balloon--lightweight, but colorful and amusing enough until it pops.

James D'Arcy Fights For His Family's Future in Sci-Fi Drama "LX 2048", Premiering 9/25 -- Watch Trailer HERE!

Time Runs Out for One Man and Mankind in "LX 2048"

Starring James D'Arcy, Anna Brewster, Delroy Lindo

Dystopian Near-Future Drama Premieres in Virtual Cinemas and North American VOD September 25th

Los Angeles, CA - Quiver Distribution, in a partnership with Chimera Pictures and Outta the Bloc, has announced the virtual theatrical and North American digital debut of writer/director Guy Moshe's LX 2048, a near-future dystopian drama about one father's search for a way forward for his family before his time runs out and a clone takes his place.

LX 2048 will be available to rent or own September 25th on Amazon, iTunes, Comcast, Spectrum, Dish, DirecTV, Vudu and more in the US and Canada.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

James D'Arcy (Dunkirk, "Broadchurch", Marvel's "Agent Carter") headlines the cast as a man who has resisted humanity's exodus to virtual reality.  With his death fast approaching and a clone ready to step in as husband and father, Adam struggles to find a way out of his situation, to protect his wife (Anna Brewster, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, "Versailles") and children.

The cast is rounded out by frequent Spike Lee collaborator and Tony Award nominee Delroy Lindo (Malcolm X, Da 5 Bloods, "The Good Fight") and BAFTA winner Gina McKee ("Our Friends in the North", "The Borgias", Phantom Thread).

It is 2048.  Mankind has by now destroyed the ozone layer to such a degree that normal human beings cannot be out in daytime.  People spend their waking hours at night and almost everything is done inside the virtual realm.

From work to school to socializing, most people just stay home and conduct their affairs from their Virtual Reality designated spaces.  Mental depression has become so prevalent that the entire population is required to take the state issued pill 001LithiumX.

In this new world order, Adam Bird is a rare breed.  Adam insists on waking up during the day.  He insists on leaving his house and going to work in a physical office.  He has 3 kids in a time when most people barely breed, and he adamantly refuses to take 001LithiumX, fighting to stay human in a world that is rapidly transforming into the artificial.

But things change when Adam discovers his heart is mysteriously failing.   With no possibility for an organ transplant, Adam is now scheduled to be replaced by a cloned upgrade - an improved version of himself that will be supplied to his estranged wife as part of the Premium 3 government insurance plan.

Spiraling out of control, Adam starts living on borrowed time, seeking to find a solution before his replica will be sent to raise his kids and replace his existence across the board.

"DTF" Takes to the Skies on VOD September 15th

A Lonely Pilot Searches for Love, Sex & Addiction

New Documentary Takes a Hot and Heavy Trip Around the Globe

Rent or Buy on iTunes and Amazon Prime Video

Los Angeles, CA - Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, in a partnership with Jump Seat Productions, has announced the Digital HD and Cable VOD launch of director Al Bailey's DTF, a documentary about one pilot's search for love and sex through Tinder and the friendly skies.

DTF will premiere at LA's Dances With Films before a VOD launch in the United States.  DTF will be available to rent or own September 15th on Amazon, iTunes, Comcast, Spectrum, Vudu and more.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

A raw and audacious fly-on-the-wall expose documentary on the life of a long-haul airline captain, DTF charts filmmaker Al Bailey, who follows a widowed airline pilot around the planet as he searches to find new love via the dating app Tinder.

The well-intended quest spirals into a controversial cautionary tale of one man's addictive and outlandish behavior in a bubble of vice and depravity that conflicts with his consummate professionalism.

Over the course of 18 months, a filmmaker follows his friend "Christian" as his career as a long-haul pilot takes him to the far corners of the Earth.  Widowed and lonely, "Christian" uses his career to find new love in far-off lands as the camera captures his misadventures in lust and love.

From the Far East to North America, the friendship of the two men is thrown into turmoil as moral compasses are tested to the limits with a whirlwind of vice and addiction.

The question soon turns from can you find true love in the modern global world via dating apps, to how well do you know your closest friends when you are thrown into their secret crazy environments?

Happy Leap Year From Chandler Bing -- #OwnFriendsTV

Did you know that this Saturday - February 29 - is Leap Day?

It’s a date that only comes around every 4 years to help synchronize the calendar year with the length of time it takes the Earth to complete its orbit around the sun - which is 365.25 days! It’s an extra 24 hours to do whatever you want, without feeling guilty that you don’t have the time.

In the word’s of Chandler Bing – “Can I BE anymore excited?!”

Some fun facts about Leap Year:

Leap Year was first introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC.
The odds of being born on Leap Day are about 1 in 1500.
There are about 187,000 people in the US, and 4 million people worldwide who were born on Leap Day.
Leap year babies get their driver's licenses when they are officially four years old (or 16 calendar years)!
How do you know if it’s going to be a Leap Year? Most years that can be divided evenly by 4 are Leap Years, with the exception on Century Years. Century Years are not Leap Years unless they can be evenly divided by 400.

So what are you going to do with your extra day this year? On behalf of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and the Digital, Blu-ray & DVD releases of Friends – we wanted to wish you and your family a Happy Leap Year. Since this day only comes around once every 4 years – it’s a day to sit back, relax and binge with your “friends.”

We have created a fun meme for your readers from Chandler Bing – with his infamous one-liner - in honor of Leap Year. We would love if you can please share with your readers today on your site and socials – and remind them that this amazing day is coming on Saturday, February 29!

Award-Winning Documentary "CODE & RESPONSE" Available Nov. 19 On iTunes, Amazon Prime and Vimeo

"CODE & RESPONSE"

Award-Winning Documentary Available Nov. 19

2018 was one of the worst years on record for natural disasters-taxing governments, straining relief organizations and overwhelming communities as they attempt to rebuild. In the wake of these global catastrophes, a new type of responder emerges: the coder.

CODE & RESPONSE follows coders around the world (Japan, Puerto Rico, California and Mexico) as they develop groundbreaking technologies to help first responders and communities become more resilient against the growing threat of natural disasters. The film not only explores the technology they are building, but also their motivation and inspiration for what they are creating.

When Pedro Cruz couldn’t communicate with his Grandmother during Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, he used his drone to see how she was doing. As he flew the drone to her house, he saw SOS messages painted on the street, which is what inspired his AI-driven technology, DroneAid.

Growing up in the mountains of Washington State, Kenji Kato had first-hand experience with the threat of wildfires. His app, Wildfire Report, is designed to help both first responders and communities more accurately track the progress of fires and help find the safest routes to evacuate.

CODE & RESPONSE is directed by Austin Peck and produced by George Hammer. Peck’s credits include director of Gardeners of Eden, about Kenya’s David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the critically-acclaimed feature Tough Bond and “Big Picture,” the 11-episode investigative news series in VR.

CODE & RESPONSE has won several awards in 2019, including Best Documentary—International New York Film Festival, Best Documentary Short Film Award - MINT Film Festival, The Gold Award Best Feature—Southeast Regional Film Festival, The Founders Award—North Beach American Film Festival, Official Selection—Golden Door International Film Festival, Official Selection - Napa Valley Film Festival and Official Selection—New Haven International Film Festival.

The film will be available on iTunes, Amazon Prime and Vimeo on November 19, 2019.

"NOTHING REALLY HAPPENS"

“A MESMERIZING HOUSTON-SET SPIN ON ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND.” - SIGHT & SOUND MAGAZINE

Winner of ‘Best Film’ at the 2018 Sci-Fi London Film Festival, this lo-fi indie from Houston marks the feature film debut from writer/director Justin Petty, in what can be best described as a weird, defiantly different slice of surreal cinema from southeast Texas.

Mixing science fiction, comedy, and suspense, Nothing Really Happens explores the madness of everyday existence from the perspective of Dave (Adam Edwards), a 30-year-old mattress store owner, who becomes increasingly untethered in a strangely off-kilter world.

Produced by Emmy Award-winner Joseph Graham. Starring Adam Edwards, Lindsay Gustin, Bobby Dornbos, and Anthony Obi aka Fat Tony.

"BEHIND THE CURVE", A Film About Flat Earthers, People Who Think The Earth is Flat! | On Demand and Digital HD on 11/15/18

THE FILMS SALES CORP

presents

"BEHIND THE CURVE"

A documentary feature film by Daniel J. Clark

96 minutes  | HD | Color | USA | English | Not-Rated
On Demand and Digital HD on November 15, 2018
We Invite You To Share The Trailer With Your Readers!

We live on a globe… right? You might find more disagreement on that than you’d expect.

The Flat Earth community has risen out of nowhere in the past three years and shocked the world with its reach, counting among its members celebrities like NBA star Kyrie Irving and the rapper B.O.B, and drawing the ire of celebrated science communicators like Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye. Their existence has nonplussed millions, who can't seem to figure out if they're really serious or just elaborate pranksters.

But rest assured—they are deadly serious.

The king among the Flat Earthers is MARK SARGENT, an affable, fast-talking video-game tester in his forties who now champions the Flat Earth cause full-time. Far from a huckster, Mark is a conspiracy enthusiast convinced to his core that we’re all victims of a massive cover-up. He works closely with his enigmatic confidante PATRICIA STEERE to spread their message.

The two are now revered as saints in the members, the eccentric craftsman CHRIS PONTIUS, who makes intricate models of the Flat Earth, and experimenters JERAN CAMPANULA and BOB KNODEL. Their group—Globebusters— carries out complicated experiments meant to prove once and for all the true shape of the earth.

All is not well in Flatland, however. The experiments are all either inconclusive or suggest that the Earth is, in fact, a spinning globe, prompting ever-more convoluted theories to explain away the results. Furthermore, internal rifts threaten to tear the Flat Earth community apart. What begins as a doctrinal argument about whether the Flat Earth is an infinite plane or an enclosed system encased in a dome spirals into something more.

Mark’s former mentor, MATT BOYLAN—a surly, secretive artist who claims to have been employed by NASA—is angry at his protĂ©gĂ©’s rise to the top, and feels he isn’t getting the credit he deserves for kickstarting the resurgence of a belief that’s been dead for centuries. He feverishly works to bring down Mark and Patricia by convincing other Flat Earthers that they are actually government agents, creating a massive divide in the community, and sending shockwaves through Mark and Patricia’s personal lives.

Meanwhile, the Flat Earth movement is exploding, adding hundreds of members across the world every day. Media attention builds to a fever pitch during the August 2017 eclipse, when Flat Earthers make the front page in newspapers across the country. Everything comes to a head at the first-ever Flat Earth International Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, where hundreds of Flat Earthers gather to spend time with the only community where they feel they truly belong; where they feel they have value, and where their lives have real meaning.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Fairfax, VA (December 7, 2017) - This fall, Dino goes digital with THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN CELEBRITY ROASTS: VOLUMES 1-3!  Never before released on any digital platform, the Roastmaster General will be available exclusively on iTunes beginning December 11, with three "Best of" compilation releases priced at $14.99; individual episodes will be available for $1.99 each.  The classic TV archivists at Time Life will release additional digital content throughout 2018 and beyond.

What originally began as one-off specials to boost ratings for his variety show, The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts evolved into a fixture on NBC's Thursday night lineup from 1973 to 1984.  Across those 11 years, Dean, Rat Pack Royalty, and his panel of celebrity pals successfully ridiculed, embarrassed and made fun of Tinsletown giants like Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Don Rickles and Martin himself, to name a few, and America ate it up!  Anybody with thick skin and a good agent was fair game, and Martin was a legendary ringleader who set the tone and encouraged the freewheeling spirit that makes these roasts still so fascinating, even decades later!

Each volume of THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN CELEBRITY ROASTS features 9 uproarious episodes.  VOLUME 1 features complete and unedited roasts of Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., Telly Savalas, Michael Landon, Angie Dickinson, Joe Garagiola, Peter Marshall, Joe Namath and even a roast of Dean Martin.  VOLUME 2 includes roasts of Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Betty White, Ted Knight, Jimmy Stewart, Valerie Harper, Danny Thomas, Dan Haggerty and Suzanne Somers.  And VOLUME 3 features Muhammad Ali, Redd Foxx, Evel Knievel, George Burns, Dennis Weaver, Gabe Kaplan, Jack Klugman, Joan Collins and the second roast of Michael Landon.  Home viewers are sure to howl over the bashing and basting of so many celebrities by a spectacular array of the day's top personalities.

THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN CELEBRITY ROASTS: VOLUMES 1-3 joins THE BEST OF THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW, VOLUMES 1-4 also available on iTunes; and, throughout 2018, Time Life will release additional TV classics on the platform.

THE DARK TAPES -- Movie Review by Porfle

There's more to "found footage" than just the convention of seeing an entire movie through the lenses of various cameras.  There has to be a good reason for it, and it has to add to a film's effect in a way that justifies it.

Directors Michael McQuown and Vincent J. Guastini have scored on both counts with their excellent indy chiller THE DARK TAPES (Epic Pictures, 2017).  Not only is it well-written, well-acted, and technically impressive, but it manages to make "found footage" scary again.

Basically an anthology piece whose segments relate to one another in some way (more or less), the wraparound story concerns a couple of college students who stumble upon the remains of a sleep research experiment gone wrong.  The lab is a shambles, the bed is bloody, and the professor and his assistants are missing.  Perhaps the footage on their video cameras will reveal what happened...

We meet Professor Callahan, one of those quietly obsessed types; Nicole, working on her doctorate in physics; and Jason, the group's camera operator. They're deep into their research into sleep paralysis, or "night terrors."  Callahan has a theory about the "shadow people" who often appear to those suffering from this condition--that they're actually trans-dimensional entities who exist in a different time continuum than ours.

But before we get too involved in their story, we're then told the tale of David and Karen, a happily married couple whose beautiful new dream house turns out to be haunted by things that go bump in the night (and all day, too).

After some pretty eerie events (footsteps on ceiling, a rubber ball that stops and rolls back to them) which gradually escalate into sheer terror, they finally call in a team of paranormal specialists in what will seem a familiar scenario to viewers of the SyFy Channel's "Ghost Hunters."

These "experts" are obviously in over their heads, and what follows is a nail-biting succession of scares taking place with that creepy night-vision effect that makes everything seem even scarier.  I'm not going to elaborate further, but suffice it to say that things (a) get a lot worse, and (b) do not end well.

After more with Professor Callahan's group we see the story of two young women running one of those cyber-sex webcam rackets.  This one also starts out rather uneventful until mysterious outside forces begin to interfere with the good clean fun, and suddenly Caitlin is trying to persuade one of her horny clients to get a knife and cut himself juuust a little bit.  And no, this one doesn't end well, either.

Next is an intense segment called "Amanda's Revenge", which gives us further insight into the problem of "night terrors" and "shadow people."  After Amanda is molested at a party, she starts to experience strange intruders in her bedroom and feels as though they're performing sinister experiments on her.

With the help of her friend Ryan, she tries to fight them or at least record their presence.  What happens next is not only disturbing, especially if you have a primal fear of the dark, but leads right into the film's finale in which Professor Callahan and his assistants learn more than they ever wanted to know about the subject of trans-dimensional entities.

This final segment is not only nail-bitingly suspenseful, but it also contains at least one killer jump-scare that froze my blood ice cold.  The acting and direction are extremely well-handled, making it a prime example of using imagination and skill to get the most out of a limited budget. I felt pretty numb when it was all over, having been both thoroughly scared and thought-provoked.

Think of how the original "The Outer Limits" and "The Twilight Zone" used to fire up your imagination while giving you a severe case of the creeps, and you'll begin to understand how unnerving THE DARK TAPES is.  I started watching it around midnight--alone--and it wasn't long before I paused it and thought: "Okay, the rest of this can wait until daylight."
