Principal Photography Commences On "THE MARSH KING'S DAUGHTER" With Brooklynn Prince, Gil Birmingham, and Caren Pistorius Joining The Cast

 


PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMMENCES ON “THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER” FOR STX FILMS, BLACK BEAR PICTURES AND ANONYMOUS CONTENT

Los Angeles (June 16, 2021) – STXfilms, Black Bear Pictures and Anonymous Content today announced the start of production on Neil Burger’s (Limitless, The Illusionist) highly anticipated psychological thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter, which is now underway in Canada. Brookylnn Prince (The Florida Project, “Home Before Dark”), Gil Birmingham (Wind River, upcoming Eternals) and Caren Pistorius (Unhinged) have also joined the star-studded cast alongside previously announced Daisy Ridley (Star Wars trilogy) and Ben Mendelsohn (Babyteeth, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).


The forthcoming adaptation of Karen Dionne’s best-selling novel of the same name was written by Elle Smith & Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Midnight Sky) and is produced by Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game, I Care a Lot), Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon (The Revenant, Midnight Sky) and Mark L. Smith. Executive Producers are Black Bear’s Michael Heimler, Syndicate Entertainment’s Cliff Roberts, and Charles Miller. Black Bear will fully finance the project.


The Marsh King’s Daughter follows Helena (Daisy Ridley), a woman living a seemingly ordinary life with her husband and young daughter, but hiding a dark secret within: that her father is the infamous “Marsh King,” the man who kept Helena and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. Helena is forced to face her demons when her father escapes from prison unexpectedly. Knowing that he will hunt for her and her family, Helena must find the strength to confront her past and the man she once idolized.


Prince currently stars in the Apple TV+ series “Home Before Dark,” which made its season two debut last week. She is best known for her starring role in the Academy Award® nominated The Florida Project, and has since appeared in films including The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, The Turning, and The One and Only Ivan.


Birmingham has a long and accomplished career with notable credits including Wind River, the Twilight franchise, Hell or High Water, The Lone Ranger, The Space Between Us, and “Yellowstone.” Gil recently wrapped five episodes of the limited Netflix series “Pieces of Her” opposite Toni Collette, currently shooting in Australia. He will next be seen in Marvel’s highly anticipated Eternals from director Chloé Zhao. 


Pistorius starred opposite Russell Crowe in the action thriller Unhinged, and is known for roles in Gloria Bell, High Ground, Mortal Engines, and Slow West.

The Marsh King’s Daughter falls under the output and distribution agreement between Black Bear Pictures and STXinternational.


Black Bear Pictures’ current slate includes J Blakeson’s I Care A Lot which debuted at #1 on Netflix earlier this year and received a Golden Globes win for ‘Best Actress’ for Rosamund Pike; Martin Campbell’s upcoming thriller Memory starring Liam Neeson, now in production; Annette Bening starrer Nyad which is currently in pre-production and will be directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin; and Heidi Ewing’s I Carry You With Me which will be released by Sony Pictures Classics and received two Spirit Award nominations.

Ben Mendelsohn Joins Daisy Ridley In Neil Burger's "THE MARSH KING'S DAUGHTER"

 


BEN MENDELSOHN JOINS DAISY RIDLEY IN NEIL BURGER’S “THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER”


Los Angeles (May 5, 2021) – STXfilms, Black Bear Pictures and Anonymous Content today announced Ben Mendelsohn (Babyteeth, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has joined Daisy Ridley (Star Wars trilogy) in Neil Burger’s (Limitless, The Illusionist) highly anticipated psychological thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter. The forthcoming adaptation of Karen Dionne’s best-selling novel of the same name was written by Elle Smith & Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Midnight Sky). The film is produced by Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game, I Care a Lot), Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon (The Revenant, Midnight Sky) and Mark L. Smith. Executive Producers are Black Bear’s Michael Heimler, Syndicate Entertainment’s Cliff Roberts, and Charles Miller. Black Bear will fully finance the project, with principal photography due to commence in Canada this June.

Mendelsohn will star as Jacob Holbrook, the infamous “Marsh King,” who years ago kept his young daughter, Helena, and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. After a lifetime of trying to escape her past, a now grown Helena (Ridley) is forced to face her demons when Jacob unexpectedly returns.

Mendelsohn is a Golden Globe® nominated and Emmy Award® winning actor best known for his roles in Animal Kingdom, The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines, Darkest Hour, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Captain Marvel, The King, and Netflix’s “Bloodline.” He starred in this year’s BAFTA nominated Babyteeth and will next be seen in Marvel Studios’ “Secret Invasion” for Disney+, as well as Joe Wright’s Cyrano in which he co-stars alongside Haley Bennett and in Damián Szifron’s Misanthrope opposite Shailene Woodley. Mendelsohn is represented by WME and United Management.

Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist) is set to direct the highly anticipated screen adaptation of Karen Dionne’s novel The Marsh King’s Daughter. Daisy Ridley (Star Wars trilogy) will star in the psychological thriller penned by Elle Smith & Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Midnight Sky).


Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game, upcoming I Care a Lot), Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon (The Revenant, Midnight Sky) and Mark L. Smith will produce. Black Bear will finance.


STXinternational, a division of Eros STX Global Corporation, has secured international rights for the highly anticipated film, and will present the project to buyers at the upcoming European Film Market, as well as directly distribute the film in the UK, Ireland and India.  CAA Media Finance is handling US rights.


Ridley will star as Helena, a woman living a seemingly ordinary life, but hiding a dark secret: her father is the infamous “Marsh King,” the man who kept her and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. After a lifetime of trying to escape her past, Helena is forced to face her demons when her father unexpectedly escapes from prison. 


The Marsh King’s Daughter is an international bestselling novel by author Karen Dionne. Published in 25 languages, the novel is described as “...as good as a thriller can be” by The New York Times Book Review.


Director, Writer and Producer Neil Burger is best known for directing Divergent, which has grossed over $300 million worldwide, Limitless, and the critically acclaimed The Illusionist. He made his directorial feature debut with Interview with the Assassin, winning the Best Feature Film category at both the Woodstock Film Festival and Avignon Film Festival, and receiving nominations for three Independent Spirit Awards. His most recent film, The Upside, grossed over $100 million in North America and was also Burger’s third number one opening in a row. On the TV side, Burger directed and executive produced the first two episodes of “Billions” for Showtime.


Ridley is best known for her breakthrough performance as Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Credits also include Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express and Doug Liman’s upcoming sci-fi Chaos Walking, based on the bestselling book by Patrick Ness.


Principal photography is due to commence this summer.

The Marsh King’s Daughter falls under the output and distribution agreement between Black Bear Pictures and STXinternational, which was announced during Berlin/EFM last year. STXinternational sells and distributes all Black Bear productions overseas, with Black Bear’s sister company, Elevation Pictures, distributing all STX productions and acquisitions in Canada.

 

Black Bear’s slate includes Martin Campbell’s upcoming thriller Memory starring Liam Neeson; J Blakeson’s upcoming dark thriller I Care A Lot, starring Rosamund Pike who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress, which Netflix released on February 19; Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Our Friend starring Dakota Johnson, Casey Affleck and Jason Segel; and Dave Franco’s directorial debut The Rental.
