When The Universal Monsters Carried The Ladies (video)

Carrying the leading lady is a time-honored tradition among monsters.

Most of Universal's monsters got their chance, but not all.
Neither the Invisible Man nor the Wolf Man had the temperament for it.
The opportunity never presented itself to Karloff's "The Mummy" (1932).

Quasimodo (Lon Chaney, Sr.) carried Esmerelda in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923).

Bela Lugosi carried Helen Chandler in "Dracula" (1931).
Carlos VillarĂas carried Lupita Tovar in the Spanish version.

Kharis the Mummy carried Peggy Moran in "The Mummy's Hand" (1940)...
...and Elyse Knox in "The Mummy's Tomb" (1942)...
...and Ramsay Ames in "The Mummy's Ghost" (1944)...
...and Virginia Christine in "The Mummy's Curse" (1944).

The "Creature From the Black Lagoon" carried Julie Adams in 1954...
...and later Lori Nelson in "Revenge of the Creature."

Out of all his films, the Frankenstein Monster only got to do it once...
...when Bela Lugosi's stand-in Gil Perkins carried Ilona Massey in "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" (1943).

Pieced-Together Monster Suit: "The Monster of Piedras Blancas" (1959) (video)

The Monster's suit was created by Jack Kevan, who also worked on "Creature From the Black Lagoon" and "The Mole People."

The feet and lower torso were recycled from the Metaluna Mutants of "This Island Earth" (1955).

The claws were recycled from "The Mole People" (1956).

In 1965, the Monster's head was used in a "Flipper" episode, "Flipper's Monster."

It was directed by Ricou Browning, who played the Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Ricou even wore the suit.

(Here's our REVIEW of the movie.)

The Creature Shrinks in "The Creature Walks Among Us" (Universal-International, 1956) (video)

In the "Creature" movies, two actors played the Creature.

A larger actor played him on land, while lithe swimmer Ricou Browning performed the underwater scenes.

For the surgically-altered monster in "The Creature Walks Among Us"...

...a much bulkier padded suit was made, and covered with baggy clothing.

Underwater, the whole get-up clung to Ricou Browning's much smaller frame.

Not only did this make the Creature look smaller, but the head tended to fill up with air.

"FRANKENSTEIN" (1931) Electrical Sound FX Used In "THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US" (1956) (video)

One of the last of the classic Universal monster movies...

...uses a 25-year-old sound effect from one of the first ones.

When the Creature smashes through an electric gate during his rampage...

...the crackling electrical sound effects are straight out of 1931's FRANKENSTEIN.

Cringey Wire Effect in "Revenge of the Creature" (1955) (video)

Cringey Wire Effect in "Revenge of the Creature" (1955)

Two teenagers discover an unconscious Lori Nelson lying on the beach, and...

...the wire effect that follows is not all that convincing.
