LIQUID SKY -- Blu-ray/DVD Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 4/15/18

I first saw Russian director Slava Tsukerman's 1982 avant-garde cult sci-fi classic LIQUID SKY back in the early 80s when it came out on VHS looking a heck of a lot cheaper and dingier than it does on Vinegar Syndrome's richly vivid new Blu-ray/DVD combo set (scanned and fully restored in 4k from the 35mm original negative and packed with special features).

Now, the film still looks low-budget but the talent and imagination that went into transcending that budget are allowed to shine through.  The visuals are a feast of 80s proto tech and economical cinematic imagination, all day-glo and neon and glam-punk and New Wave and ugly fashion and jaded cynicism set to robotic industrial music performed on a Fairlight.

The setting is an urban milieu where sneering androgynous scarecrows get made up as though for Halloween so that they can express derision to either clicking cameras or their fellow drugged-out dance club denizens.

Our heroine, tall blonde beauty Margaret (co-scripter Anne Carlisle, CROCODILE DUNDEE, DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN), is one such model so disaffected by her lifestyle that any hint of normality now seems abrasively foreign.

Margaret is a victim not only of the lecherous men she invites back to her apartment simply because they have drugs--making her a victim also of her own flagrant self-destructiveness--but of the equally-violent, overbearing, profane, drug-pushing dyke Adrian (the great Paula Sheppard of ALICE, SWEET, ALICE) with whom she shares both a penthouse apartment and a sick, abusive relationship.

The main attraction of LIQUID SKY for me has always been Carlisle's exquisite dual-role performance as both Margaret and her nemesis, a preening male model named Jimmy with whom Margaret shares a mutual loathing.  Carlisle pulls off the feat of creating two intensely interesting and perversely compelling characters whose split-screen interactions are always utterly convincing and scintillating.

But the weirdness really starts when tiny aliens land their spaceship on a nearby rooftop and start feeding off both the heroin-enhanced brainwaves of Margaret's visitors and also the chemical reactions caused by their orgasms, which proves lethal to them.  Thus, anyone who has sex with Margaret dies.

In this world the most appealing characters, for me anyway, are the more normal ones such as Margaret's older friend Owen, whose genuine concern for her makes him the first alien orgasm casualty, and Jimmy's indulgent single mother (to whom he is utterly dismissive except when begging for money) who lives nearby and is visited by an eccentric German scientist on the trail of the alien ship.

It turns out her apartment window offers a fine telescope view of the tiny spaceship, giving her a chance to vainly try and seduce the man while he keeps an eye both on the ship and the lethal sexual activity going on in Margaret's apartment.  There's a mundane charm to their scenes that's a stark contrast to the infinitely stranger things going on elsewhere.

Meanwhile, our wacky nihilistic misfits continue courting death, a condition hastened by constant drug use--they live to snort and shoot up--and sexually-transmitted disease, upon which dwells much of the film's symbolism.

Their casual cruelty to each other comes to the fore when they get together in the penthouse for one of their tacky, drug-fueled modeling shoots, during which Margaret's deadly new sexual side-effect will shock even these jaded louts of their curdled complacency in a big way.

LIQUID SKY is a low-key slice of wildlife that doesn't explode like THE FIFTH ELEMENT or mesmerize like 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.  It's simply the story of an aimless New Wave waif named Margaret numbly wandering through a harsh world of hurtful people and some weird little aliens who help her by hurting them.  And watching it is like a dark but colorful carnival ride through a combination art gallery and spook house.

IN SEARCH OF...THE COMPLETE SERIES -- DVD Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 12/14/12

For those of us who caught it during its first run, almost every episode of "In Search Of..." was a guaranteed dose of pure "sense of wonder."  Each week, host Leonard Nimoy explored the world's most tantalizing mysteries with an open mind, allowing us to bask in their intoxicating strangeness in an atmosphere free of rigid, buzzkill skepticism.

Now, Visual Entertainment Inc. (VEI) has collected all 152 episodes of this classic show, which ran from 1976-1982, in their 21-disc DVD collection IN SEARCH OF...THE COMPLETE SERIES.  I reviewed a screener with two half-hour Nimoy episodes, "In Search Of...Mayan Mysteries" and "In Search Of...UFO Coverups", both pretty representative of the show as a whole.

Low-budget photography makes this independently-produced syndicated show look older than it is, but it was that way even when it was new.  No matter, since the fascinating subject matter and wealth of both exclusive film footage and well-chosen stock shots easily make up for this.  Nimoy, one of the finest narrators of all time, lends the show much-needed gravitas even during its most outlandish forays into the unknown.

The Mayan episode poses a series of teasing questions about this mysterious ancient people such as: why, if they incorporated the wheel into their children's toys, didn't they employ it for practical purposes?  How did they conceive such complicated systems of mathematics and astronomy, among other things?  And why did they suddenly disappear from recorded history?

Even more up my alley is the look at UFO cover-ups, which opens with some familiar footage of a possible flying saucer but focuses mainly on the famous Roswell, New Mexico incident.  Actual interview clips of Air Force officer Jess Marcel, a major participant in the purported saucer crash investigation, and footage of Hangar 18 itself, where the wrecked saucer and alien bodies are said to have been housed, make this of special interest to UFO enthusiasts.

There's also a first-hand account from a scientist who claims to have been taken to the crash site by U.S. Air Force officials and is only now breaking his silence.  As usual, the show is aggressive and non-apologetic in its insistence that anything is possible regardless of how farfetched it may seem to the skeptically minded.

In addition to the 152 regular series episodes, the VEI collection also includes two Rod Serling-hosted "In Search Of..." specials which aired in 1972, plus the entire eight-episode run of the 2002 reboot with "The X-Files" star Mitch Pileggi.  The screener I watched contained one from 1972 and one from 2002.

"Twilight Zone" creator and host Serling takes us on an exploration of ancient astronauts that covers all the familiar territory in highly compelling fashion, including the baffling stone heads of Easter Island and the enigmatic Nazca lines in Peru.  While the Serling episode is quite similar to the later Nimoy series, the flashy Pileggi-hosted show from 2002 is the sort of lurid exploitation fare you might see on SyFy, with gruesome stories about stigmata, Haitian zombies, and murder scenes haunted by restless ghosts.

While I can't speak for the entire collection as a whole, the picture and sound quality of the 4-episode screener I watched was good for a low budget syndicated series from the 70s.  You may be bugged by the VEI logo in the lower right hand corner but I forgot it was there after awhile.

Being a loyal viewer of the show back in its heyday, I can personally attest that, content-wise, the rest of "In Search Of..." is chock full of fun and often spooky stuff about the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, conspiracy theories, unsolved murders and disappearances, bizarre phenomena both natural and supernatural, and just about anything else that this weird world has to offer.  While learned astronomer Carl Sagan may consider the subject at hand to be unsupported by "a smidgen of compelling evidence", you'll probably find an avalanche of it in IN SEARCH OF...THE COMPLETE SERIES.

IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT MYSTERIES -- DVD Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 10/19/14

Some movies can pretty much divide a roomful of people in half. That is, one half will sit in rapt attention while the other half flees the room in all possible haste to escape paralyzing, soul-crushing boredom.

IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT MYSTERIES (1973) is one of those movies. Many viewers will find its dry, pseudo-scholarly tone, glacial pace, and static images of crumbling ruins and desolate landscapes to be the absolute opposite of entertainment.

And yet, those who used to sit fascinated week after week by every episode of the subsequent television series "In Search Of" (1976-1982, hosted by Leonard Nimoy) will most likely be riveted to the screen from beginning to end.

The open-mindedness of this film's producers and writers--which skeptics would no doubt find excessive--is what allows host/narrator Rod "Twilight Zone" Serling to pose baffling questions about ancient civilizations and then offer theories involving alien visitors from outer space and other paranormal phenomena.

Most of the now-familiar subjects are touched upon, from the mysterious lines carved into the vast Nazca plains of Peru--which Serling supposes may have been a landing field for alien aircraft--to the gigantic etchings of people and animals seen here and in England which can only be discerned from the air. Were these created for the benefit of our ancestors from the sky?

The ruins of Inca cities and other wondrous sites such as Troy and Jericho are examined for further evidence of such visitors sharing their advanced knowledge with ancient humans. Serling, along with various scientists, historians, and other experts whose credentials may or may not be impeccable, endeavors to explain why we should suspect an alien influence shaping much of our shared history as citizens of Earth.

In a seemingly stream-of-consciousness manner, Serling whisks us from Peru to the Bermuda Triangle for a quick retelling of the famous tale of disappearing military planes, and then it's off to search for the fabled lost city of Atlantis.

Unexplained artifacts are examined as well, including human skulls that display evidence of successful brain surgery, intricately designed machines created seemingly ahead of their time, and painted or sculpted images that resemble modern-day astronauts or aircraft.

Serling follows all of this up with some NASA-related anecdotes and a tale of unexplained radio waves received from outer space, again told by guest "experts" whose reliability we must either accept or discount. More interstellar speculation wraps things up, unsurprisingly, on an inconclusive note.

The DVD from Film Chest is in full screen (4 x 3) with original mono sound. Running time is 53 minutes. No subtitles or extras. The picture quality varies between okay and "ehh" (some of the stock footage shots in particular look like somebody's home movies) but then again the "In Search Of" shows always looked like that and it never really made that much difference.

While I don't know how every diehard skeptic will react to IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT MYSTERIES, I'm pretty sure the less patient ones would rather skip it altogether. But if you've ever entertained the notion that we've been visited and indeed colonized by aliens throughout history, you may find this documentary's earnest "what if" tone to be both intriguing and fun.

Small Town Monsters Explores the Dark Side of UFOs

First Trailer for On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors

Takes Viewers into the Most Disturbing Aspect of UFOlogy

Wadsworth, OH--Do cattle mutilations still plague the American West? According to the latest documentary from Small Town Monsters, the phenomenon, which was popularized through references in shows like "The X-Files" and "Unsolved Mysteries", continues to this day.

On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors unveils a detailed look at the ongoing UFO activity occurring across the country through interviews with investigators and eyewitnesses. The feature-length documentary promises to take viewers on a journey into a side of the subject that they’ve never explored.

Small Town Monsters has released the first-look trailer for the new film which begins to hint at some of the incredible eyewitness accounts and mind-boggling nuggets of information contained therein.
Night Visitors is the follow-up to the wildly successful 2020 miniseries, On the Trail of UFOs, and 2021’s On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky.

The film is directed by Small Town Monsters founder Seth Breedlove and follows investigator Shannon LeGro (host of Into the Fray podcast) as she searches for answers across the stunning mountains and prairie lands of Colorado. Her search takes her deep into often-overlooked and deeply disturbing sides of the UAP topic; cattle mutilations and human abductions.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

Along with the teaser, Breedlove and company have announced their film production lineup for the year which includes three additional titles: On the Trail of Bigfoot: Last Frontier, American Werewolves and Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse.

Bigfoot is a followup to last year's On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Discovery which spent over 8 weeks on Amazon Vdeo's best-selling overall titles list. American Werewolves explores the topic of upright canids in North America, while Jersey Devil seeks to blend narrative, fictional story elements with Small Town Monsters' tried and true documentary format.

All four titles are headed to Kickstarter on February 3rd where they will be seeking funding throughout the month. A slew of rewards sure to please the UFO, paranormal or cryptid enthusiast in your life are up for grabs for backers of the campaign.

On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors will debut on VOD this spring.

Small Town Monsters Looks to the Final Frontier in "ON THE TRAIL OF UFOS: DARK SKY", Landing on VOD August 3 -- Watch Trailer HERE!

Small Town Monsters Follows Leads for Extraterrestrial Life

"On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky" Lands August 3rd on VOD

Latest Doc Investigates Connections Between Unidentified Objects and Energy Sources

Wadsworth, OH - Cryptid documentarian Seth Breedlove and paranormal researcher Shannon LeGro continue their search for the truth behind the enigma of unidentified flying objects in the latest Small Town Monsters release: On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky.

Dark Sky explores the UFO topic from the point of view of LeGro; a podcast host and author, and focuses more heavily on eyewitness accounts than typical alien fare. “This project excited us because we were able to look into reports from real people in real places that still connect what they’re seeing to what is being talked about in the mainstream media today,” Breedlove said.

“Particularly, this idea of why these objects or lights in the sky might actually be here on earth and how they might be closer connected to us than we think.”

On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky will be available to purchase or rent on August 3rd on a number of platforms from 1091 Pictures, including iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu and FandangoNOW.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky, is a follow-up to 2020’s On the Trail of UFOs: Season 1", an episodic series created by Breedlove and LeGro and distributed by 1091. "On the Trail of UFOs" explored the long history of the topic and became one of the most-viewed independent UFO documentary series in history, racking up nearly 10 million views on Amazon, alone. Dark Sky goes beyond the history of the subject, exploring modern-day accounts, with additional filming taking place as recently as early May.

Dark Sky explores decades of reports of unusual craft and lights seen in the skies, and delves into some of the more overlooked aspects of the subject such as men in black, the connection between UFOs and energy sources and encounters with a mysterious being called “Cold”.

The new project took LeGro and Breedlove to West Virginia, allegedly a hotbed for UAP activity for over a century, where they investigated a series of sightings around the northern panhandle of the state, and found a link between sightings and energy sources that has gone overlooked.

Dark Sky also takes a look at “West Virginia’s Area 51”, and a series of sightings of the same object taking place near the town of Davis, West Virginia that lead to the film crew having an encounter of their own.

On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky traces decades of reports of mysterious objects, creatures and enigmatic beings seemingly not of this earth. Tracking reports around the state of West Virginia, the film retraces steps taken in previous Small Town Monsters productions while digging deeper into the mysteries around us.

"AMONG US": What To Watch Today? Seen The Declassified Pentagon Footage of the Alien Spaceship?

Have you caught the UFO videos the Pentagon just declassified? If you did - this documentary is for you.

On April 27, the Pentagon released videos declassified by the US Navy. The footage, captured by U.S. Navy pilots, shows "wingless aircraft traveling at hypersonic speeds, with no visible means of propulsion," shared LiveScience.com.

While Military.com goes on to share, "In releasing the videos, the U.S. Navy officially acknowledges that its pilots encountered so-called unidentified aerial phenomena."

AMONG US, a new documentary released by Vision Films, adds to the argument - humans are not alone on planet earth; alien life forms are (already) AMONG US.

Filmmaker Caroline Cory documents the jaw-dropping accounts of extraterrestrial encounters around the world and provides ground-breaking, scientific evidence of these other-worldly interactions, leaving the compelling question open - what will the influence of non-human beings be on our DNA?

"ON THE TRAIL OF UFOS" Contacts New Trailer Ahead of Release -- See It HERE!

Small Town Monsters Examines Extraterrestrial Contact in New Miniseries

"On the Trail of UFOs" to Release March 20th

Series Set to Explore America's Complicated Relationship with UFOs
Final Trailer Drops Ahead of Release

Wadsworth, OH -- Small Town Monsters has announced the March 20th Blu-ray/DVD, Amazon and Vimeo release of their new miniseries "On the Trail of UFOs".  The final trailer for the series gives viewers a glimpse into the astonishing numbers of locations and mind-bending interviews documented.

The latest production from Small Town Media founder and director Seth Breedlove, "On the Trail of UFOs" takes an in-depth look at the current state of unidentified flying objects, and America's continuously-evolving relationship with the subject.

With unidentified flying objects being written and talked about in major news outlets and behind closed doors in Washington D.C., Breedlove and series host Shannon Legro set out to document what is by far the most tumultuous point in the history of "flying saucers".

WATCH THE TRAILER:

The series objective was to follow investigator Shannon LeGro as she scours the United States in search of clues to the origins of the unidentified flying objects. LeGro and crew filmed in fourteen different states across America in an effort to meet and speak with witnesses, investigators, skeptics and even folklorists while documenting their findings.

Episodes focus on all aspects of the mystery; from purported alien abductions to the recent "Storm Area 51" event that grabbed international headlines. Nearly thirty interviews were conducted with people who have claimed to either see a UFO (in some cases on multiple occasions) or who go in search of them.

"On the Trail of UFOs" takes viewers from the gates of Area 51 itself, to the snow-capped White Mountains of New Hampshire. Filming took place across the United States, including New York City, Phoenix, Sedona, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Las Vegas. The team interviewed numerous witnesses and investigators of unknown aerial phenomena, including those who claim to have been abducted and experimented upon by real aliens. No stone was left unturned in putting together what Breedlove believes to be the most comprehensive look at the subject ever filmed.

DARK ENCOUNTER -- DVD Review by Porfle

From the looks of it, DARK ENCOUNTER (2019) could have gone one of two ways--cool, capably-rendered science fiction thriller, or typical SyFy Channel-level tomfoolery that's perversely fun in spite of itself.

Fortunately, producer-writer-director Carl Strathie (SOLIS) has worked hard to ensure this solid effort takes the high road and stays there till the emotionally resonant ending.

It begins with what we assume is an abduction, when parents Olivia (Laura Fraser, A KNIGHT'S TALE, VANILLA SKY) and Ray (Mel Raido, THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM) return to their rural two-storey home to find that their young daughter Maisie has gone missing.

One year later, a memorial service attended by close family and friends is their first painful step toward accepting the fact that their daughter will never return.

Once these characters are introduced and the setting and situation established, we watch their volatile interactions play out much like a theater play in real-time, rife with blame and recriminations and bitterness, until suddenly something of such utter strangeness occurs that everyone is quickly drawn into the most baffling and mind-warping mystery of their entire lives.

This is where DARK ENCOUNTER takes on some of the feel of Steven Spielberg's UFO classic CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, even to the extent of practically duplicating some of the shots.

But where Spielberg's aliens seemed to grow increasingly benign as his story progressed, this prolonged close encounter within the house and its surrounding woods grows more threatening, more inexplicable, and more downright scary as the family seems to be under siege from forces that can invade at will and instill a frantic sense of sheer terror against which these people are helpless to defend themselves.

Just when we think the story must surely be approaching its end, suddenly its the next day and a new light shines on the mysteries of the previous night. But even with a trusted local policeman investigating recent events--which now include even more disappearances--and more people witnessing strange sights in the area, the nightmare isn't over for Olivia and Ray and what's left of their family.

Strathie handles it all expertly and keeps the tension high from the very first signs of unidentified lights in the woods all the way to the startling revelations in the film's final minutes.

He wisely refrains from showing too much, and, except for a couple of shots that are just too on-the-nose (and look like something from one of those SyFy Channel flicks), we're allowed to let our imaginations participate fully in the scariest scenes.

In addition to the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND references, the latter half of the film features its own version of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY's "stargate" sequence and should satisfy fans of both science fiction and horror.

DARK ENCOUNTER's appeal, however, isn't limited to fans of those genres. Its human qualities are such that most viewers will relate to the plight of these characters and its eventual resolution, which involves some deeply emotional developments capable of tugging the heartstrings even as our minds are being pleasantly warped.

Before Kenneth Tobey and his men are menaced by the Thing...

...they find its crashed flying saucer submerged in the ice.

There's the saucer's fin.

And there's the...truck?

Later, they set off a thermite bomb to thaw the ice.

An upward camera pan reveals what appears to be...

Coming Soon: Paranormal Doc "HUNT FOR THE SKINWALKER" Based on NY Times Best-Selling Book

A FILM DECADES IN THE MAKING

HUNT FOR THE SKINWALKER will be available to own on digital September 11 and to stream on demand September 19

Based on the best-selling book by George Knapp & Dr. Colm Kelleher, HUNT FOR THE SKINWALKER investigates the confidential, most extensive scientific study of a paranormal hotspot in human history.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

Skinwalker Ranch in Utah is famous throughout the world because of the myriad of frightening, seemingly supernatural events that have been reported in the scenic basin surrounding the property for hundreds of years. Sightings include orbs, UFOs, animal mutilations, unknown creatures, poltergeist-type activity, and many other inexplicable incidents.

An exhaustive, multidisciplinary scientific study began in 1996, spearheaded by an enigmatic Las Vegas billionaire named Robert Bigelow. A team of PhD-level investigators was deployed to collect evidence and spent more than a decade on the ground, interviewing witnesses, searching for explanations, and directly confronting an unknown intelligence.

Recent headlines have revealed that a second, government-funded but confidential study was initiated by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). This second investigation was designed to determine if the phenomena at the ranch might have national security implications or could point to technological breakthroughs.

The shroud of mystery hanging above Skinwalker Ranch and the Utah Basin has fascinated director Jeremy Corbell (Patient Seventeen) for years. He finally journeyed to the property to interview eyewitnesses - including the new owner of the ranch - and uncover rare, previously unreleased recordings.
