Q: Where Did The "STAR WARS" Slanted Titles Concept Come From? A: Serials... (video)

Just as "Star Wars" was inspired by the "Flash Gordon" serials of the 30s and 40s...

...so was its distinctive slanted-font opening plot synopsis.

Several of the classic serials pioneered the use of this device.

Here are some of them...

Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe (1940)
Buck Rogers (1939)
The Green Hornet (1940)
The Phantom Creeps (1939)

Hey, Isn't That Mr. Drysdale? ("THE GREEN HORNET" Serial, 1940)(video)

While watching the 1940 serial "The Green Hornet"...

...we see an actor who looks very familiar.

Isn't that Mr. Drysdale from "The Beverly Hillbillies"?

Sure enough, it is.

Over two decades later, Raymond Bailey would be a television icon.

But here, he's a young, uncredited bit player.
