WEREWOLF SHADOW and CURSE OF THE DEVIL -- Two Paul Naschy Wolf Man Reviews by porfle

Originally posted on 6/26/08

I grew up seeing pictures of Paul Naschy's werewolf character in "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine and, since Universal's Wolf Man was my favorite monster, I always wondered what Naschy's Spanish version would be like. Now, with the special edition DVD releases of 1971's WEREWOLF SHADOW (aka "La Noche de Walpurgis") and 1973's CURSE OF THE DEVIL (aka "El Retorno de Walpurgis"), I finally get to see what all the howling was about.

WEREWOLF SHADOW opens with a scene reminiscent of the first minutes of FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, as two medical examiners summoned to check out the dead body of Naschy's Waldemar Daninsky character (the Spanish equivalent of Lon Chaney, Jr.'s "Larry Talbot") foolishly remove the silver bullets from his chest, bringing him back to hairy, fang-baring life. Flash forward a bit, and we join Elvira (Gaby Fuchs) and her painfully-cute cohort Genevieve (Barbara Capell) in the French wilderness searching for the lost tomb of legendary vampire woman Countess Wandesa Dárvula de Nadasdy. They run into Waldemar, who is living in isolation with his demented sister Elizabeth (Yelena Samarina), and he invites them to stay in his villa while he helps them with their search.

Needless to say, they eventually uncover the tomb and release the revived Countess (Paty Shepard), who turns Genevieve into a vampire and then sets her sights on Elvira. But a lovestruck Waldemar, armed with the same silver cross that first killed the vampire woman back in the old days, comes to the rescue, turning into the Wolf Man just in time for a climactic werewolf vs. vampire woman showdown.

Naschy's outlandish werewolf makeup and bug-eyed overacting make for a really fun monster, which is quite the opposite of his effectively restrained demeanor as Waldemar. Gaby Fuchs, on the other hand, is almost comically expressionless most of the time. As the vampire woman, Paty Shepard wears flowing black clothing and runs around in slow motion a lot. My favorite non-werewolf character, though, is Genevieve, simply because Barbara Capell is just so gosh-darn cute.

The film is marred by ultra-pedestrian direction, photography, and editing and a wildy-inappropriate musical score, and it creeps by at a snail's pace from beginning to end. Some scenes, such as the one in which Elvira's detective friend Marcel (Andrés Resino) questions the mayor of a nearby village, are almost lethally boring. Night scenes take place in broad daylight so it's often impossible to tell what time of day it's supposed to be.

But for all its faults, WEREWOLF SHADOW is still interesting to watch if you're a classic horror fan and you want to see where Spanish horror really began. Naschy's Wolf Man is a hoot, and there's an abundance of low-budget 70s-style gore and brief, gratuitous nudity--while watching it, I felt transported back to the old drive-in theater where I wasted many hours in my youth. Presented in 1:85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image quality is outstanding considering this is a low-budget exploitation flick from 1971--the print used looks almost flawless to me. Both the original Castilian and dubbed English soundtracks are available, with subtitles.

In addition to a large stills gallery, the disc includes the U.S. release version of the film, known as THE WEREWOLF VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMAN. The print used here is somewhat battered in spots, which gives it more of that "grindhouse" feel. There aren't many differences between the two versions, although some of the nudity is gone, the opening and closing titles are altered, and that deadly scene with Marcel and the mayor has gone to cutting-floor hell where it belongs.

Moving on to better things, the 1973 follow-up CURSE OF THE DEVIL is a vast improvement. A prologue takes us back to the Middle Ages in which an earlier Daninsky slays the head of the Satan-worshipping Bathory clan and then executes the rest of them by hanging and burning. While being roasted alive at the stake, the widow Bathory puts a curse on Daninsky and his descendants, which will eventually include our hero, Waldemar. We join him in 19th-century Transylvania, where he lives in a castle with his loyal servants Bela and Malitza, who raised him.

After inadvertently shooting a werewolf while hunting, Waldemar finds himself the object of a gypsy curse. He's seduced into bed by a beautiful gypsy woman for his first-ever sexual experience, but she then chomps him in the chest with a wolf skull dripping with her own blood, which turns him into a werewolf. Fortunately, not everything that happens to poor Waldemar is such a total bummer--he meets a beautiful blonde babe named Kinga (Fabiola Falcón) who lives nearly with her parents and younger sister Maria, and they fall in love. But when the full moon comes, Waldemar goes bestial and starts terrorizing the countryside. And before it's all over, Kinga and her family may be his final victims.

Directed with a rough-hewn but imaginative style by Carlos Aured, CURSE OF THE DEVIL is briskly-paced and filled with exciting werewolf set-pieces, including some extremely cool transformation scenes that harken back to the old Universals. That studio's style is also represented by torch-wielding villagers and some character names (Bela, Malitza), plus some similarities to the script of the original THE WOLF MAN. Director Aured seems influenced by the 50s Hammer horrors as well, particularly CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF.

The rustic locations are excellent, and the performances this time are entirely adequate. There's some nudity here and there, as well as copious amounts of gore as the Wolf Man chalks up quite a body count during his many nocturnal outings (which are now actually filmed at night with much more creepy, shadowy atmosphere). Naschy's makeup is very different this time--it looks as though he's wearing an over-the-head mask--but he's still just as fearsome and feral as ever. Also in 1:85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the print quality here is almost as good as in WEREWOLF SHADOW, albeit a little rougher early on, and I seemed to notice a distracting jerkiness in the actors' movements on several occasions. The English dubbed soundtrack is good, while the Castilian version seems to have a slight droning noise in the background throughout. There's no U.S. release version this time, but we do get the English and Castilian trailers (skip the U.S. one if you haven't seen the film yet--it gives away the ending).

Both DVDs also contain liner notes by "The Mark of Naschy" author Mirek Lipinski, with some cool photos and a wealth of information. The menus are well-designed, and the DVD box art has a delightfully retro look to it.

Now that I've finally seen Paul Naschy's Wolf Man in all his glory after all these years, I'm glad I did. WEREWOLF SHADOW and especially CURSE OF THE DEVIL are good old-fashioned monster movies that I'll be revisiting now and then for a long time to come. Like Chaney's Larry Talbot, Naschy's Waldemar Daninsky is the kind of werewolf that I love--no cartoony CGI, just an actual actor in cool monster makeup, giving an actual performance.

Drive Cult Classics Volume 2 DVD Review by 42nd St Pete

Drive In Cult Classics Volume 2 Released by BCI

Initially I thought that this was just a package of beat up PD prints. I was wrong as somebody took the time to find better prints and restore them. The films in this collection are The Hearse, Land of the Minotaur, The Creeping Terror, Bloodlust, Terrified, They Saved Hitler’s Brain, Madmen of Mandoras, & The Devil’s Hand.

To see how good these were, I picked the shittiest one in the bunch, The Creeping Terror. I had seen a really crappy print of this years ago. Almost the entire film is narrated as the soundtrack was “lost”. The monster, called a giant carpet in some reference books, actually doesn’t look bad here.

The monster looks a lot like a turtle with leaves sprouting out of it and a vagina for a mouth. It eats a lot of people, attacks a dance hall were people look really drunk. Check out the two old ladies getting hammered. When the creature attacks, a fist fight breaks out. The creature eats everyone at the dance hall, a squad of soldiers, then goes to lovers lane.

You see a lot more carnage in this print. The beast turns over a car and the passengers tumble out, bloody. The creature sucks them out of the car. The new Sheriff (the old one got eaten) rams his car into the beast, killing it. They find out the monsters are portable labs that eat people and send the data to another planet to find our weaknesses. The scientist, who has been rendered a bloody mess, warns of a potential invasion down the road.

This film has never looked better and is actually watchable. There seems to be a lot more footage added to it and it’s a very clear print. Even though I haven’t watched the rest of the films, just based on what they did with The Creeping Terror, I would recommend this collection.

Cemetery Girls and Vampire Hookers Review by 42nd St Pete

Exploitation Cinema Double Feature: Cemetery Girls and Vampire Hookers. Released by BCI.

A great double feature ala grindhouse with trailers, snack bar commercials and a great double bill. Cemetery Girls is actually Count Dracula’s Great Love with Paul Naschy. I don’t know if this is the uncut version, but it starts out with a throat getting ripped out and an axe to the head before the credits roll.

Four women and one guy are stranded in a remote region in the Carpathians. They are told of a sanitarium, run by a crazy doctor, by their driver before his head is caved in by one of the horse’s hooves. Of course they go to the place and meet the doctor, who is really Count Dracula.

The fun begins as the girls are bitten and get naked. Lots of lesbo action as two vampire girls double team their friend’s neck and other interesting parts of her anatomy. The dubbing is atrocious, the vampires are walking around in sunlight, the gore is extreme at times , and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Vampire Hookers is the co feature , shot by Ciro Santiago and starring the immortal John Carradine

You just have to love these trashy flicks shot in the Philippines. Two sailors on shore leave are looking for some pussy. They wander into a trannie bar by mistake. After a brawl in that lovely establishment, they hook up with a guy who might be an Admiral or something. A hot chic comes into the bar, the Admiral grabs her and she takes him to her place, the cemetery.

At this point any sane man would be mouthing WTF, but not this horny sailor. He follows her into the crypt, which is a pretty cool set, and thinks he is about to get busy. Unfortunately Carradine & his bevy of bodacious vamps show up and drain his fluids, not the fluids he expected.

His buddies go searching for him and find the cemetery. One finds his way into the crypt, but is seen by Vic Diaz , a servant to the coven. The two sailors are cornered and all seems hopeless until the sun rises. This is for laughs as no one could take any of this seriously. It’s laughs, tits, & blood. One girl defends her cult” It’s not murder, it’s dinner”. Vic farts a lot to add to the ambiance.

One sailor goes back and is caught. Carradine spouts a lot of Shakespeare quotes and seems to be enjoying all of this. The three vamps want the sailor for the night and we get a prolonged softcore sex romp while the sailor’s buddy tries to rescue him.

This plays out like a low budget Abbot & Costello movie. The sailor brings a bag of garlic & stakes, but can’t get the door to the crypt open. He leaves the bag and goes to get tools. Vic finds the bag and brings it to Carradine. “ Is it pizza? “ one of the girls asks. “ No it’s garlic “ Carradine roars and order the bag to be disposed of. John also bitches about mixing vodka with blood.

These two films are the perfect mix of laughs, blood, nudity, sex & horror. While the humor in Hookers was intentional, I’m sure the humor in Drac wasn’t. These transfers are the best I’ve seen with these films. Hookers is heads above those crappy VHS tapes put out by Comet, Continental, or whatever those ugly big box VHS tapeswere. All in all, a great package, though I could have done without seeing Nachy’s fat, hairy ass in the sex scenes.

LIVE FROM ABBEY ROAD: BEST OF SEASON 1 -- An Intimate Studio Performance Begins November 11

NAVARRE CORPORATION’S BCI PRESENTS A UNIQUE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON US DVD AND BLU-RAY

Los Angeles, CA – BCI, a Navarre Corporation Company, today announces the release of Live From Abbey Road: Best of Season 1 on November 11, 2008. This celebrated international music series, distributed by FremantleMedia Enterprises, airing on the Sundance Channel in the US, combines striking quality visuals with a pristinely engineered sound. The show is recorded at the famous London studios, which have been long been the recording venue of choice for the best talent in music, from the London Symphony Orchestra to U2, and perhaps most recognizably, The Beatles. The DVD and Blu-Ray feature an eclectic mix of performances, as well as notable extras such as extended interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and photo galleries. The DVD set will be available for an SRP of $19.98, along with blu-ray format at $26.98.

Live From Abbey Road: Best of Season 1 brings together some of the best performances from its premiere season. Artists such as John Mayer, Dr. John, Wynton Marsalis, The Goo-Goo Dolls, Iron Maiden, Dave Matthews, David Gilmour and Norah Jones perform at this musical Mecca, without an audience, to simulate the intimate, intense atmosphere of a recording studio.

In fly-on-the-wall style, the show gives viewers access to these stellar musicians while they spend the day at Abbey Road rehearsing, performing, and sharing their musical muse. Within these historic surroundings, their unique recordings are filmed with the use of a 35 mm lens, as producers Michael Gleason and Peter van Hooke seek to capture performances which “look like a movie and sound like a record”.

Full list of artists featured: Corinne Baily Rae, Gnarls Barkley, Natasha Beddingfield, Dave Matthews, Craig David, Dr. John, David Gilmour, Gipsy Kings, Josh Groban, Iron Maiden, Jamiroquai, Norah Jones, Kasabian, Ray LaMontagne, Amos Lee, Wynton Marsalis, John Mayer, Nerina Pallot, Primal Scream, Damien Rice, LeAnn Rimes, The Good The Bad and The Queen, The Goo-Goo Dolls, The Kooks, The Zutons.

The Kidnapping of the President DVD Review from BCI

Well after Deathshow Gameshow and thoughts of SHATNER, I went in with low expectations for the Kidnapping of the President and I have to say I was happily surprised. TKOTP turned out to be a really nice blend of action, political thriller, and man in the control room disaster movie. Usually when you toss a bunch of sub-genres in the blender the results turn out to be well Deathrow Gameshow. This film on the other hand was a very nice thriller that made good use of the Toronto cityscape and making it more than just bland scenery. One reviewer even stated that the street names and buildings were all accurate which helped give an always nice realism boost to the project.

The pacing is very nicely down and you rarely find yourself checking your watch as the movie never spends too much time dwelling on a particular plot thread (and there are a couple of sub-plots at work) that it becomes boring, but never becoming confusing either. The movie serves as a nice predecessor to 24 and the story would fit perfectly at home with that show and its story of the President being kidnapped and held for ransom in a armored car in the middle of a square in full public view.

The acting is also good, with people going more for a realistic approach to the characters with the exception of the VP's wife (which is a thread that sort of ends randomly, but not illogically) and not a super charged action hero or overly melodramatic. Shatner even stays clam and does a nice job that doesn't cause one to think of his acting excesses.

The last 10 minutes are also very fast paced and don't fall victim to the one minute countdown becomes two hours, quite the opposite. Another couple of pluses are some super gory killings in the jungle during the beginning (it makes sense later on), Shatner going FUCK!, and some very nice camera work which helps give an almost documentary feel to the film.

The print used by BCI is excellent and looks great while still maintaining a gritty and realistic feel to the movie. The audio is also clear and free of any distortion.

This little known political/action thriller is well worth the purchase and even if you don't like it there is always Deathshow Gameshow!

Deathrow Gameshow DVD Review from BCI

The movie was directed by a man named Mark Pirro and released by Piromount Pictures (no I'm not kidding) and whose company logo is a boob. Really it’s a boob with a nipple. This movie is one of those 80s crapfests with tons of boobs, teased hair, humor that isn't really funny, but sort of in the offensive stupid way, and a lot of super obvious puns. It's certainly not good in the right way, in the evil sort of 80s brand humor. It reminds of what the guy who made Hobgoblins would have made if he had more money. It maybe funny, but I’m not sure. It is really fun 80s sleaze crap that’s worth watching. If anything it is certainly not the horror themed movie the old Media VHS tape cover suggested. Thrill at a stuntman hanging from a car at speeds of up to 5 MPH. There is also tons of 80s cheese and a Deathrow Gameshow theme song. Really Rick Sloane may have made this.

It's paired with The Kidnapping of the President From BCI and is anamorphically enhanced and the print looks mint, the audio is clean and free of any problems. It’s an easy recommendation for fans of 80s sleaze crap.

PRIDE 34 and SHOCKWAVE 2006 DVD Reviews

Pride 34 and Shockwave 2006 Review

We take a look at some of the latest PRIDE FC releases by BCI. These are notable for the fact these are the first released by Zuffa, owners of the UFC, since the transfer of PRIDE from Dream Stage Entertainment to Zuffa. Fans have been worried that the DVD releases would be stopped or otherwise damaged because of a lack of interest by Zuffa. This early test indicates that the answer will be no.

Video: Both events are presented in 1:78:1 anamorphic widescreen. This is interesting because of the fact that PRIDE never released any of these events in Widescreen. However, as some will know often certain fights appeared in Widescreen on the Japanese Region 2 release of PRIDE DVDs. It seems Zuffa is simply using a widescreen master that Dream Stage had, but only used for certain fights. To the best of my knowledge none of the fights look cropped at all and in a more telling way, US announcer footage (produced by PRIDE USA) are in regular full screen (and presented the way ESPN does with certain non-widescreen ads or programs on its HD channel). The picture quality is great and it’s nice to see PRIDE events in Widescreen (and not cropped to achieve it).

Audio: The audio uses a standard stereo mix and sounds fine. It is important to note, as is somewhat obvious by the appearance of Kill The Messenger’s Music Supervisor credit, certain music has been replaced. The most notable example of this is the insane J-Pop song that played during the intro for Shockwave 2006 and replaced with a generic angry nu-metal sound. It’s a shame, but DSE routinely cut intros for rights reasons, and the costs to license the song and others may not have been in Zuffa budget for the DVD release (Zuffa does this with their own UFC releases). Still the fights sound great, so fans should still enjoy the contests themselves.

Extras: Each disc contains certain extra fights. PRIDE 34 has the only in the Japan match up of Butterbean vs Zulu’s son. It’s a shame the Japanese TV version couldn’t appear on the disc as the promotion of the Super Heavy-Weight Grand Prix is pretty funny. Essentially all fights that occurred at each event should be on the discs. There is a lot of editing on the PRIDE 34 DVD as the main feature is less than 90 minutes. The fights are uncut, but a lot of the closing events and waiting for the fight setup has been cut (PRIDE 34 was a long event live).

Overall: If you are looking for low-priced ways to view some of the last events PRIDE put on these DVDs are a great way besides importing the expensive Japanese DVDs. While some of the production end decision Zuffa made, but all the fights are present and they picture and audio quality are good. So I would recommend picking these DVDs up if you’re a fan of PRIDE events.

Shaolin vs Ninja/Shaolin Vs Tai Chi and Amazon vs Supermen DVD Review

Shaolin vs Ninja/Shaolin Vs Tai Chi and Amazon vs Supermen

NINJAS, NINJAS, NINJAS!!! Seriously do I really need to add anything more than that? Well, yes I probably should. Rarescope via BCI hits kung fu fans with some wonderful and gloriously goofy films from Five Venoms chorographer and grumpy gus (just watch an interview with him on one of the earlier Rarescope DVDs) and early international Italian/Chinese co-production which used Shaw Brothers actors. Essentially you’re getting Robert Tai’s Shaolin goofiness (which usually means great wire-based kung fu and just jaw-droppingly absurd stories and plot points). It’s not high art by any means, but both films feature excellent martial arts work and a story that is well anything but boring. Rarescope and BCI release these two Robert Tai films together on one DVD-9 (no flipping discs or that crap). Amazon vs Supermen is released by itself; it’s interesting and worth a check out for a truly bizarre mix of film styles and sensibilities.

Video: Considering the rarity of these films and the fact that the only appearance has been on crappy PanMedia bootlegs, it’s great to see a legit release of these two Robert Tai films. The print is not mint and has damage, but it’s not horrible and very watchable and honestly pretty decent. The fact is that the retail price at HK Flix for the set is 10.95, one cannot expect Celestial quality. Both films are full widescreen which is always a must for a kung fu movie. However, the films are only letterbox. It would have been nice if the films had been anamorphically enhanced. Due to the print quality, it was felt that the trade off of greater resolution for perhaps worse quality was not worth it. Amazon vs Supermen is also fully widescreen and only letterbox. Picture quality is decent also, and pretty good with only mild print damage and deterioration.

Audio: Shaolin vs Tai Chi has embedded English and Chinese subs with Mandarin Audio. The other films have an English audio track. The sound is mono for all of them. They are in decent condition with some crackles at time, but are generally pretty good.

Extras: Some trailers, but that’s about it.

Overall. For a grand total of $17 at HK Flix or another retailer, you can get three kung fu movies in full widescreen from Rarescope and BCI. If you have any love of the wacky world of Robert Tai or a weird co-production, then Rarescope has a great package of kung fu for you.: it’s an easy buy if any of those conditions apply to you.

IRON KING IS COMING TO KICK ASS AND TAKE NAMES: HAIL TO THE KING!

Get Iron Kingat Amazon.com and help support HK and CULT FILM NEWS.

Wow. BCI is really putting out some great things in the coming weeks and I'm sure since Toku and Japanese Sci-Fi expert August Ragone is working on the set the booklets is going to kick some major ass. The price is going to be hard to beat as an entire Japanese tv series is being sold for the same price as 2-3 volumes of an Anime series would normally cost. Now thats value!

From BCI:

All hail the King!

Years before The Transformers, and in the same inimitable spirit as Ultraman, comes Iron King. Filled with furious, fast-paced action and campy humor, Iron King quickly became a favorite in its native Japan when originally broadcast from 1972-’73. On Tuesday, November 6th, BCI Eclipse, under the Ronin Entertainment label, will release the 4-DVD boxed set Iron King: The Complete Series with an SRP of $39.98. Also included in the set is a 20 page booklet with a history of the show, interviews with the cast and an episode guide.

For 26 delirious episodes, audiences of all ages grooved to this free-wheeling combination of giant monsters, martial arts and colorful characters. Now, Iron King is poised to take America by storm - and just in time for the holidays.

Shizuka Gentaro is a free-spirited youth who also happens to be a member of Japan’s Special Security Defense Force. His travels take him throughout Japan, searching for those who pose a threat to the security of the nation. Along the way, Gentaro is joined by Kirishima Goro, who appears to be a lovable, uncoordinated bumbler but is also a secret member of the JSSDF.

Goro, whose secret mission is to assist in Gentaro’s efforts, has another incredible secret: He has a computer mechanism implanted in his body that, when activated, turns him into the super-powered cyborg giant, Iron King. When Iron King is around, the bigger the bad guys are _ the harder they fall.

Gentaro, clad in his favored cowboy outfit (replete with chaps) and armed with his miraculous “Iron Belt,” is teamed with Goro/Iron King - and together they battle the minions of the Unknown Clan, who believe that the time has come for them to fulfill their destiny and take over the world. Boy, have they got it coming to them!

Created by Sasaki Mamoru, the cast of Iron King includes Shoji Ishibashi as Gentaro, Mitsuo Hamada as Goro and Hajime Izu as Prof. Tsushima, Gentaro’s foster father and Goro’s teacher.

There’s even a memorable theme song!

VIVA CHIBA! VIVA CHIBA BCI Unleashes the Power of Chiba in a new 6 film box set this November!

Buy the Sonny Chiba Collectionat Amazon.com and help support HK and CULT FILM NEWS.

This set looks like a true winner loaded with brand new releases (the original cut of Bullet Train) and new transfers of older films that will look a million times better than their non-BCI versions.

Now before anyone complains about the lack of Japanese versions (which is a valid issue don't get me wrong), I know in the case of several films the original language version is owned by someone else and BCI was unable to acquire both versions. This was talked about by BCI's Cliff MacMillan with us earlier this year in an interview
http://hkfilmnews.blogspot.com/2007/04/interview-with-bcis-cliff-macmillan.html

and in a post at kung fu fandom

DRAGON PRINCESS, THE BODYGUARD and KARATE WARRIORS -new film transfers of the English language versions...
We had hoped to be able to include the original Japanese version as well, but that might not happen....but you'll get new anamorphic widescreen transfers of the English versions.

Here is the press release itself

VIVA CHIBA!

Earlier this summer, international superstar Shinichi “Sonny” Chiba announced his retirement from acting, after a glorious career that has spanned more than 40 years. In more than 100 films, Chiba established himself as a force to be reckoned with, inspiring countless generations of fans the world over.

On Tuesday, November 20th, BCI Eclipse, under the Ronin Entertainment label, will commemorate Chiba’s awesome legacy with The Sonny Chiba Collection, a six-film DVD set highlighting the best and most memorable performances of the incomparable Sonny Chiba (the Street Fighter trilogy, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1), available for the super low SRP of $24.98. Pre-book is Oct. 12.

The Sonny Chiba Collection includes the first-ever U.S. release of the longer cut of Bullet Train with English subtitles as well as the international version of Bullet Train with a dubbed English audio track. The collection also boasts the uncut version of Golgo 13 with both the Japanese audio and English-dubbed audio track, as well as the new anamorphic, widescreen transfers of the English-dubbed versions of the all-time Chiba classics Karate Warrior, Dragon Princess, Sister Street Fighter and The Bodyguard.

Few stars define “international superstar” like Sonny Chiba. Ever since his breakthrough hit Street Fighter in 1974, Chiba reigned as the leading Japanese martial arts actor for over twenty years. Sonny was triumphantly reintroduced to a new movie-going generation with Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, Vol. 1 portraying revered sword maker Hattoro Hanzi.

This holiday season, it will be a “Chiba Christmas”!

The Latest in Euro-Horror from BCI: A Terrifying Two-fer!

PREPARE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

WITH A FEAST OF EURO-HORROR FROM BCI!

“THE LORELEY’S GRASP”AND

“HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB”

Available For the First Time, Remastered in High Definition;

Serving on DVD November 13th

Los Angeles , CA – What better way to usher in the holidays than with a heaping helping of Euro-horror? BCI Eclipse, a Navarre Corporation Company, under their Deimos label, unveils the latest additions to their ever-growing Euro-horror library with the November 13th DVD release of Amando de Ossorio’s The Loreley’s Grasp (Las Garras de Lorelei) and Horror Rises from the Tomb (El Espanto Surge de la Tumba), starring and written by Spanish horror film icon Paul Naschy. Continuing its dedication to preserving and presenting classic Euro-horror films on DVD , Deimos presents these two classic horror films for the first time in their most complete, uncut original versions, remastered from the original negative in high definition. For side dishes, each film boasts a tasty selection of bonus features, including the original Castilian and English-dubbed audio tracks, theatrical trailers, photo galleries and alternate scenes. SRP is a paltry $19.98 for each title. Order date is October 5th.

Written and directed by Amando de Ossorio, The Loreley’s Grasp reaches out from the depths. In a university town by the Rhine river, young women are turning up dead…savagely torn to pieces and their hearts ripped out of their bodies. With casualties mounting and local authorities at a loss, helpless to find who – or what – is causing these horrible murders, a nearby school for young women hires an experienced hunter to find and kill the murderer. The hunter will soon find out that horror is only skin deep and that his target is an alluring and mysterious being – the Loreley – who is already searching for another victim to use in a gruesome ancient ritual.

Written by Jacinto Molina (aka Paul Naschy) and directed by Carlos Aured, Horror Rises from the Tomb is another terrifying chapter in the Euro-horror legacy of Paul Naschy. In 15th century France, the warlock Alaric de Marnac is beheaded for crimes against humanity and his equally guilty mistress also viciously killed, but not before the pair put a curse upon the descendents of their executioners. Featuring midnight séances, the undead rising from marshes, generous doses of nudity, blood-drenching heart-ripping and eerie atmosphere, Horror Rises from the Tomb rightfully deserves its place of a hallmark of Euro-horror.

The Loreley’s Grasp hands out these gripping special features:

o Complete, uncut version

o Liner notes by author Mirek Lipinski (www.naschy.com) with rare photos and stills
