The Two Funniest Scenes In Dario Argento's "Tenebrae" (1982) (video)

But first, here's one of the coolest scenes: the fence-climbing dog.

Let's hear it for the fence-climbing dog! (applause)

And now for the two funniest. (If you disagree, that's okay.)

The first is John Saxon's giddy pride in his silly new hat.

The second is Tony Franciosa's reaction to a motoring near-mishap.

Whew!

Production Underway for STXfilms / Lakeshore Entertainment's "THE BOY 2" Starring Katie Holmes

PRODUCTION IS UNDERWAY FOR STXfilms / LAKESHORE ENTERTAINMENT’S “THE BOY 2”, STARRING KATIE HOLMES

Principal photography began in Vancouver this week

LOS ANGELES, CA (JANUARY 30, 2019) – STXfilms, a division of STX Entertainment, and Lakeshore Entertainment announced today that The Boy 2, a follow-up to horror film director William Brent Bell’s The Boy (2016), began principal photography on Monday 28 January, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Brent Bell returns to the helm following the success of The Boy (2016), which grossed $68M worldwide. Katie Holmes (Batman Begins, Logan Lucky, Dawson’s Creek) leads the cast as “Liza,” with Christopher Convery (Gotham, The Girl in the Spider's Web) to co-star as her son “Jude.” Owain Yeoman (American Sniper, The Belko Experiment) joins as her husband, “Sean,” and Ralph Ineson (The Witch, Guardians of the Galaxy, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts I & II) will play the role of “Joseph.”

Written by Stacey Menear, who also penned its predecessor, The Boy 2 will be produced by Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Eric Reid, in addition to Matt Berenson, Jim Wedaa and Roy Lee.

Unaware of the terrifying history of Heelshire Mansion, a young family moves into the estate, where their young son soon makes an unsettling new friend, an eerily life-like doll he calls Brahms.

STXinternational and Lakeshore introduced the film for the first time at last year’s AFM, where it sold out for all international territories.

Following their recent collaborations on Pierre Morel’s action-thriller Peppermint, starring Jennifer Garner, and the romantic drama Adrift, starring Sam Claflin and Shailene Woodley, STXfilms and Lakeshore Entertainment continue their successful partnership with The Boy 2. STX Entertainment, which is co-producing with Lakeshore, will distribute in the US, having jointly handled international sales with Lakeshore.

Holmes is represented by Adam Schweitzer at ICM Partners and managed by Jason Weinberg at Untitled Entertainment. Christopher Convery is represented by Paradigm, Sinclair Management, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner & Klein. Yeoman is represented by Adam Schweitzer and Dar Rollins at ICM Partners and managed by Ron West and Steven Kavovit at Thruline Entertainment. Ineson is represented by Donna French at Gordon and French, Alexander Yarosh at The Gersh Agency, and by Tim Beaumont and Elisa Christophe at Beaumont Communications. Brent Bell is represented by Harley Copen at ICM Partners.

Saban Films Partners with Kevin Smith on "JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT"

SABAN FILMS PARTNERS WITH KEVIN SMITH ON “JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT”

PARK CITY (JANUARY 25, 2019) – Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Kevin Smith’s highly-anticipated Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the sequel to the 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Jason Mewes and Smith are reprising the lead roles, alongside a number of returning players from the star-studded cast of the original movie, as well as a fresh new crop of cameos from the worlds of movies, TV, music and podcasting. Saban Films has committed to a substantial theatrical release. Jordan Monsanto of Smodco is producing alongside Destro Film’s Liz Destro. Production is currently underway.

Jay (Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) were first introduced 25 years ago in Smith’s directorial debut, Clerks. The unlikely stoner icons have subsequently appeared in Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II, as well as the animated film Jay and Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie. The new movie will skewer reboots, remakes, and sequels while simultaneously being all three at the same time.

Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley commented, “Jay and Silent Bob is a global franchise which has a very loyal fan base.  Partnering with Kevin at script stage on the next chapter of these iconic characters is a huge milestone. This is the beginning of a new initiative at Saban Films, to partner on IP with seasoned filmmakers and talent early on in the creative process all the way through distribution.”

Smith said, “Last February, I almost died. So on the one year anniversary of my widow maker heart attack, as a celebration of life and a big ol’ F you to Death, my best friend and I will be rolling cameras on a sequel/remake/reboot of a movie we first made nearly twenty years ago! In Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back our herbal heroes found out Hollywood was making a movie based on them, so they journeyed out to Hollywood to stop it. But I’ve learned so much as a storyteller and have grown immensely as a filmmaker since then, so audiences can expect something completely different: In Jay & Silent Bob Reboot our herbal heroes find out Hollywood is making a reboot of the old movie that was based on them, so they journey out to Hollywood to stop it again. I offer my (literal) undying thanks to our amazing partners at Saban and Universal for making this dream come true and backing this cinematic silliness!”

Mewes said, “I’m tired of doing Shakespeare all the time so it’ll be nice to get back to playing Jay again. It may be 25 years since I first played the idiot man-child from Jersey but this time’s going to be the best because I’ve really grown into the role of idiot man-child in my old age.”

Bill Bromiley and Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal for Saban Films, with Jackie Eckhouse of Sloss Eckhouse LawCo on behalf of the filmmakers.  Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group has picked up all international rights.

Equity Financing for the Picture has been provided by Hideout Pictures, Mickey Gooch Jr’s Skitbags Entertainment, and Fan Owned Legion M. Debt Financing for the film has been provided by Three Point Capital Louisiana and Intercut Capital.

Saban Films continues to be active in the acquisition and distribution space, with upcoming titles including: The Haunting of Sharon Tate starring Hilary Duff; Derrick Borte’s American Dreamer starring Jim Gaffigan; James Marsh’s King of Thieves starring Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Tom Courtenay and Michael Gambon; Richard Says Goodbye, the Wayne Roberts-directed drama starring Johnny Depp; and Sarah Daggar-Nickson’s A Vigilante starring Olivia Wilde.

The company continues to grow its presence in the industry, with successes that have run the gamut from critically acclaimed theatrical films such as The Homesman starring Hilary Swank, to one of the biggest Fathom events in 2016 with Rob Zombie’s horror thriller 31.  Recent titles include the anthology Berlin, I Love You with Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley and Jim Sturgess; the Gerard Butler starrer The Vanishing; Alexandre Moors’ The Yellow Birds starring Tye Sheridan, Alden Ehrenreich, Toni Collette, Jason Patric, Jack Huston and Jennifer Aniston; Eshom and Ian Nelms’ lauded feature Small Town Crime starring John Hawkes and Octavia Spencer; and Ivan Kavanagh’s Never Grow Old starring John Cusack and Emile Hirsch.

THE GOLEM (2018) -- Movie Review by Porfle

I've never seen the original "Golem" movies of the silent era, but I do recall the tall, hulking figure of Paul Wegener with his forboding stance and scowling face.

So it's interesting to see the character as a creepy little boy, as in brothers Doron and Yoav Paz's very dark, very atmospheric horror tale THE GOLEM (2018).

It's a concept which works quite well indeed.  In this telling of the old Jewish legend, a remote 17-century village in Lithuania is beseiged by vengeful outsiders who blame them for the plague which has devastated their own village.

The leader of the outsiders renders an ultimatim--either the Jewish medicine woman Perla (Brynie Furstenberg) saves his sick daughter's life, or he and his men will kill them all and burn their village to the ground.

Hanna (Hani Furstenberg), who has been trying in vain to conceive a child with husband Benjamin (Ishai Golan) after the death of their son years before, uses her knowledge of the Kabbalah and its deepest, most secret passages to create a Golem, a supernatural protector, to save them from the outsiders.

Taking the form of her dead son, it strikes back at the marauders, only to become a deadly threat also to Hanna's own people including her husband.

This is one beautifully dark and richly rendered movie that I can only describe as "Jewish Gothic."  The period atmosphere and overall feeling of Old World antiquity are fully realized and quite impressive.

The intense and unpredictable presence of the Golem, a monster in the form of a little boy yearning for Hanna's love and acceptance, remains morbidly fascinating throughout.

A confrontation occurs when Benjamin and his men finally clash with the outsiders against the wishes of the village rabbi, which is when the Golem first wields his power in a shocking, bloody scene.

Once the cycle of violence is set into motion, we're kept on edge wondering how far it will go not just for the outsiders but against fellow villagers when the term "double-edged sword" comes fully into play.

The Paz brothers direct it all with exquisite visual style, contrasting the old-style storytelling with sudden bursts of gore until the film's finale brings out the full horror of the situation.

THE GOLEM doesn't try to terrify or turn our stomachs, but it keeps us on edge with pure, earthy weirdness and some genuine dead-of-night chills.  It's one of the most interesting and original horror films I've seen in a while, and well worth delving into for those who like to take an occasional creep through the dark side.

THE GOLEM opens in Los Angeles on Friday, February 1 and on VOD, DVD & Blu-ray Tuesday, February 5

3 Times When John Wayne Did His Own Stunts (Donovan's Reef/ The War Wagon/ Big Jake) (video)

One stunt often attributed to Duke that he DIDN'T do...

...was the four-rail-fence horse jump in TRUE GRIT (1969).

Halfway during the jump the scene cuts away to a stuntman with his face away from the camera.
Rest assured, if Duke had done that jump...we'd have seen his face the whole time.

That's why Quentin Tarantino hired stuntwoman Zoe Bell for DEATH PROOF...
...so that you could see her face during this entire stunt sequence.

But despite his failing health in the early 60s and beyond...
...John Wayne was known to sometimes handle a stunt himself.

1. Donovan's Reef (1963)
2. The War Wagon (1967)
3. Big Jake (1971)

Not bad for a "fat old man" (as he's described in True Grit)...with one lung!

Nicolas Cage to Star in SpectreVision & Ace Pictures' H.P. Lovecraft Thriller "COLOR OUT OF SPACE"

NICOLAS CAGE TO STAR IN
SPECTREVISION & ACE PICTURES’

COLOR OUT OF SPACE

Directed by Richard Stanley, based on the novella by H.P. Lovecraft

New York, NY | January 23, 2018 – SpectreVision, the boutique genre division of Company X, and ACE Pictures announced today that principal photography will begin next month on COLOR OUT OF SPACE. Starring Nicolas Cage, the film will be directed by Richard Stanley -- his first feature in over twenty years.  Based on the novella by H.P. Lovecraft, COLOR OUT OF SPACE will reunite Cage with SpectreVision, the company behind the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2018 film MANDY.  The film will also star Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck, RED SPARROW), Tommy Chong (UP IN SMOKE), Elliot Knight (DC’s Titans), Julian Hilliard (The Haunting of Hill House) and Q’Orianka Kilcher (The Alienist, DORA THE EXPLORER).

COLOR OUT OF SPACE will be produced by SpectreVision’s Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Lisa Whalen and Elijah Wood.  Timur Bekbosunov, Johnny Chang, Emma Lee and Peter Wong will executive produce for ACE Pictures. Stacy Jorgensen will executive produce for SpectreVision.

South African filmmaker Richard Stanley started career with back-to-back cult classics, HARDWARE and DUST DEVIL, before being released from the notoriously controversial 1996 production of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, an event chronicled in the 2014 documentary LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU.  In the years since, Stanley has become a major cult figure whose return to feature filmmaking has been anticipated by legions of fans.

In the 60 years since his passing, H.P. Lovecraft has come to be widely acknowledged as one of the most influential voices in American literature, and his work has spawned a multi-million-dollar industry with a truly global fan base.  His influence and cult standing have inspired ranks in the horror echelon from Stephen King, Guillermo Del Toro, John Carpenter, Ridley Scott, J.J. Abrams, Sam Raimi, Stuart Gordon and many others.

COLOR OUT OF SPACE is a story of cosmic terror about The Gardners, a family who moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century.  They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard.  The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color.  To their horror, the Gardner family discover that this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches...including them.

SpectreVision partner Daniel Noah commented "Lovecraft is the dark father of modern horror, and we have been searching for an adaptation that captures the true scope of his cosmic dread for years. Richard Stanley - a wizard in his own right - will at long last bring Lovecraft's humbling power to the screen unfiltered."

Johnny Chang, CEO of Ace Pictures Entertainment, added “ACE Pictures Entertainment is thrilled to finance and co-produce COLOR OUT OF SPACE, our second collaboration with SpectreVision. The adaptation by Richard Stanley is outstanding and unique, a perfect canvas for Nicolas Cage's inimitable acting style. We are tremendously excited to continue our partnership with SpectreVision and their signature style of genre.”

Nicolas Cage is repped by Mike Nilon of STRIDE Management.
Joely Richardson is repped by Gersh and ARG.
Elliot Knight is repped by ICM and Affirmative Entertainment.
Julian Hilliard is repped by Paradigm and The Green Room.
Q’orianka Kilcher is repped by APA and Anonymous.

ROOM 304 -- DVD Review by Porfle

Danish director Birgitte Stærmose (DARLING, ISTEDGADE) and prolific screenwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson (PERFECT SENSE, ACCUSED) have set out to make us all sad, contemplative, and mesmerized with their gloomy drama ROOM 304 (aka "Værelse 304"), which is like one of those long, detailed dreams that skirts the boundary between the nightmarish and the mundane.

It all takes place in a high-class hotel where all the characters or their relatives work, but instead of being the story of the everyday behind-the-scenes drama of managing a bustling hotel, which I initially expected, it's really a fairly simple account of the romantic and interpersonal relationships between some troubled souls who happen to work in the confined spaces of a big, oppressive hotel.

To make the simple storylines more interesting, screenwriter Aakeson has gathered up all the scenes and laid them out like jumbled jigsaw puzzle pieces for us to try and sort out ourselves. That way we see things that will occur much later and don't understand them until they reappear in a different context, when everything finally starts to come together.

We see the little details of married  (but not to each other) co-workers sneaking around cheating on their spouses, daily compounding the lies and suspicion that will gradually come to light in tragic ways. We see a fervid subplot about a laundry room worker avenging himself on a guest who once raped his wife, which introduces a loaded pistol into the mix.

And we see the desk clerk covered in blood after a shocking murder, but, like all the other main plot points, we won't find out what happened until we've been slowly and subtly teased.

If it sounds anything like an Arthur Hailey story, it isn't.  ROOM 304 is slow, somber, and achingly sad, and we see almost nothing of the hotel's guests or the usual practical concerns of running the place. It serves instead as a sort of dreamlike territory of the subconscious, where characters yearning for various unreachable things wander through their unfulfilling lives like fish in an aquarium.

Hotel director Kasper (Mikael Birkkjær) and front office manager Nina (Stine Stengade) are having a torrid affair that, we fear, will end badly.  Just how badly is revealed to us as the puzzle pieces drift maddeningly into place, and one person's obsession and desperation override rational thought while other collateral damage is wrought.

Loneliness is another element casting a pall over such characters as emotionally needy stewardess Teresa (Ariadna Gil), who picks up men in the bar for unpleasant sex in her room.  And then there's the daily grind of service workers such as two Filipino maids who toil on the periphery, observing and chatting about it all and never knowing when some sudden twist of fate might sweep them into a maelstrom of tragedy.

My favorite character is Martin (David Dencik, 2011's TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY), the withdrawn, hypersensitive, obsessive (he's always washing his hands) desk clerk. When Nina calls him into her office and tells him that, while very efficient, he needs to "smile more", the nonplussed Martin considers this for a moment and, straightfaced, assures her that he will "make a note of it." He's the one who ends up with blood all over him after the murder occurs.

The visual mood inside the hotel is consistently oppressive, rendered with a richly dark palette and much Rembrandt-style lighting. Stærmose's direction is fluid and artistically expressive, and remains interesting throughout even when the plot is moving along at a snail's pace.

It took me two viewings to fully appreciate ROOM 304, one just to wander around getting my bearings, and another to piece it all together and realize what a carefully wrought and thoroughly satisfying work of cinematic storytelling it is.  The fadeout illicits much contemplation and, for me, a bit of emotional decompression.

Mads Brügger's "COLD CASE HAMMARSKJOLD (Who killed Hammarskjold?)" -- Sundance '19

COLD CASE HAMMARSKJOLD
Directed by Mads Brügger
Produced by Peter Engel, Andreas Rocksén, Bjarte Mørner Tveit

In 1961, United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane mysteriously crashed, leaving no known survivors.

It’s understood that because Hammarskjöld was, at the time, advocating for Congo’s independence (against the wishes of European mining companies and other powerful entities), the “crash” was an assassination.

With the case still unsolved 50-plus years later, Danish journalist, filmmaker, and provocateur Mads Brügger (The Red Chapel, The Ambassador) leads us down an investigative rabbit hole to unearth the truth.

He, his Swedish private-investigator sidekick, and a host of co-conspirators tirelessly pursue a winding trail of clues, but they turn up more mysteries than revelations. Scores of false starts, dead ends, and elusive interviews later, they begin to sniff out something more monumental than anything they’d initially imagined.

In his signature agitprop style, Brügger becomes both filmmaker and subject, challenging the very nature of truth by “performing” the role of truth-seeker. As Brügger uncovers a critical secret that could send shockwaves around the world, we realize that sometimes absurdity and irony are the emboldening ingredients needed to confront what’s truly sinister.

WEST OF REDEMPTION -- DVD Review by Porfle

If you're a Billy Zane fan as I am, you should be pleased as punch to see him back in fine form in such a first-rate, emotionally-intense suspense thriller as WEST OF REDEMPTION (Indican Pictures, 2015).

Billy (THE HESSEN CONSPIRACY, ZOMBIE KILLERS: ELEPHANT'S GRAVEYARD, SCORNED, BORDER RUN, BLUE SEDUCTION, GHOST OF GOODNIGHT LANE, BLUE WORLD ORDER) plays Hank Keller, a simple country boy living on a secluded farm with his wife Becky (Mariana Klaveno, "Dexter"), who works as a waitress.

All is serene until one stormy night when a disheveled young man (Kevin Alejandro, PURGATORY FLATS, "Lucifer") comes to the door asking to use the phone to call a tow truck.  Hank complies, but when he hears the man identify himself as "Rick Youngblood", he knocks him unconscious and ties him up in a shed.

Why Hank does this is a mystery that grips us and doesn't let up as the man is kept prisoner and interrogated while his presence is hidden from the unsuspecting Becky.

Before long we realize that she's the focus of the whole thing, but the reason for this is just one of the plot twists that you don't want to know about before delving into this deeply involving and ultimately tragic tale.

Meagan Daine's screenplay is a sizzling slowburn that has us guessing from start to finish.  What appears at first to be shaping up as a potentially violent horror thriller turns out to be much richer and more emotionally resonant, turning down unexpected paths and exploring aspects of these characters and their motives that are continuously illuminating.

Director Cornelia Duryée has taken this sharply-written script and given it an exquisitely well-rendered visual interpretation that always strikes just the right note.  Camerawork is fine but never interferes with the story, while all other technical aspects are also well done.

Zane gives one of his best and most involved performances in years, while Alejandro and Klaveno also fully and convincingly inhabit their characters. As the plot teasingly unfolds, we wonder which of the two men is the good guy and which is the bad, if indeed things are that simple.

When a series of flashbacks involving Becky begin to reveal secrets previously hidden from us, things take on a whole different dimension.  I'm not going to  reveal a single one of them, and I'd also advise you not to watch the too-revealing trailer beforehand.

WEST OF REDEMPTION doesn't resort to violence or shocks to hold our attention, and when the final twist falls into place, we discover what a beautifully told tragedy it really is.
