WITH "ALIEN: DESCENT"

A FREE-ROAMING VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE

Recruit your squad starting on April 26, ALIEN Day, at Outlets at Orange in Orange County

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 18, 2018) – Pure Imagination Studios and FoxNext Destinations will open ALIEN: DESCENT, a cutting-edge free-roaming virtual reality experience at The Outlets at Orange in Orange County on April 26. Additional locations will be announced soon. Tickets can be reserved now at AlienDescent.com.

Set in the ALIEN universe, guests join an elite squad of Colonial Marines sent to investigate a distress signal from a Weyland-Yutani mining outpost. Just before losing contact, the facility reported a mysterious infestation. It’s up to the guests and their squad to contain the threat, quarantine any survivors and get everyone to safety. While on the mission, guests move freely through the immersive space battling aliens, ranging from face-huggers to full-grown Xenomorphs.

ALIEN: DESCENT features a first-of-its-kind wireless technology developed by Pure Imagination Studios. The technology allows up to four guests to move about freely in VR, without the use of PC backpacks or wires. Each guest is armed with a custom-designed weapon and motion-tracking sensors on their arms and legs. Environmental effects, motion platforms and other surprises that simulate the descent into the heart of the Alien threat enhance the experience.

“ALIEN: DESCENT’s story-first approach is at the forefront of the location-based VR experiences that we’re rolling out. Our goal at Pure Imagination Studios has always been to push the boundaries of what’s possible — VR attractions are the perfect medium to do just that. Partnering with the forward-thinking team at FoxNext made for a potent combination of storytelling minds and innovative thinking to set a new benchmark for destination entertainment,” said Joshua Wexler, co-founder of Pure Imagination Studios.

“VR attractions bring together immersive entertainment with social experiences that can’t be replicated in the living room. The rich storytelling opportunities in the Alien universe makes it a perfect fit for cutting-edge destination entertainment. Plus, who doesn’t want to battle Xenomorphs and save the world?” said Salil Mehta, president of FoxNext.

“We're thrilled to allow guests the freedom to experience and engage in VR without the need of a cumbersome backpack.  The dream is to allow guests to fully immerse themselves, let loose, and have fun,” said Rob Taylor, co-creator of the experience from Pure Imagination Studios.

ALIEN: DESCENT opens April 26, ALIEN Day, at the Outlets at Orange. Tickets can be reserved at AlienDescent.com. The Outlets at Orange is located at the intersection of I-5 and State Highways 22 and 57 in Orange, California. More information can be found at simon.com/mall/the-outlets-at-orange.

BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL -- DVD Review by Porfle

Lilith, the fabled first wife of Adam, returns as a seductive succubus who lures and murders men in BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL (Indican Pictures, 2017), writer-director Joshua Coates' modestly-budgeted but surprisingly impressive horror-thriller.

The alluring creature who's irresistible to men but morphs into a diabolical fanged nightmare behind closed doors is played to perfection by African-Irish actress Alice Rose in her film debut.

Her intimate moments with hapless male victims give the film some of its most horrifying shock scenes, with the help of nicely-done practical effects and pretty-good CGI.

Grant Harvey plays Jeremiah Young, an orphaned teen just entering college. Having never been adopted due to his being "different", the troubled but well-meaning youth is plagued by DEAD ZONE-type visions of possible future calamity which he tries his best to avert.

He uses this ability to rescue a female classmate from suicide before saving dormmate Pete (Pooch Hall) from an encounter with Lilith which claims the lives of several of Pete's frat brothers.

The story delves deeply into its good vs. evil premise, exploring various facets of religion and faith (Jeremiah and Lilith, in her guise as "Jessica", attend the same theology class) in dead-serious fashion, devoid of the obligatory humor so common in current horror films.

Coates' intelligent, densely-packed screenplay is like a fever dream, directed with a visual style that's consistently engaging.  Lighting, camerawork, and score all contribute to an often mesmerizing viewing experience.

Rose and Harvey head a terrific cast which includes a brief cameo (during the opening titles) by Eric Roberts.  Subplots include an investigation into the horrific campus murders which, in one of the film's liveliest scenes, will bring one of the detectives much too close for comfort to his deadly prey.

There's also a revelation or two about Jeremiah's past--including his connection to a famed evangelist who fell victim to Lilith years ago--which, along with a few other story points, seems to lay the groundwork for a sequel or even a possible series.  Still, this tale is pretty much satisfyingly self-contained.

Definitely not light viewing, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL is an intense, often riveting battle between good and evil that's kind of a callback to those rowdy but substantial monster-fests of the 80s.  And Joshua Coates would seem to be a filmmaker to watch.

Disappearing Rommel Blooper in "THE LONGEST DAY" (1962) (video)

The WWII blockbuster "The Longest Day" contains a really bad SPFX shot...

...in which Field Marshal Erwin Rommel seems to disappear and then reappear.

For a production of this stature, it's a pretty jarring moment.

Otherwise, it's one of the finest WWII movies ever made.

FOLLOWERS -- DVD Review by Porfle

B-movie (and Z-movie) makers of the past had to deal with the same technical stuff as the big-timers--namely, procuring expensive film to shoot on and running it through a big camera to be developed and edited together later in its physical form.  Shooting was expensive, and retakes were very few.

Nowadays, of course, shooting time is both limitless and pretty much inexpensive since anyone with a hankering to make a movie can just grab the nearest video device--including their own phones--and start recording away.

And some, such as director Ryan Justice with his new horror-thriller flick FOLLOWERS (2017), make the act of doing that the very subject of their movie itself.

Long story short: social media stars Brooke (Amanda Delaney), who posts her popular yoga instructional videos, and her boyfriend Caleb (Justin Maina), whose fitness videos are equally well-viewed, decide to go on a camping trip during which Caleb plans to "pop the question" (a la EDEN LAKE).

Meanwhile, aspiring YouTube hopefuls Jake (Sean Michael Gloria) and Nick (Nishant Gogna) are stalking Brooke and Caleb with their own cameras, with plans to make a breakthrough documentary about how easy it is to track internet stars down from their online info and, theoretically, kill them.

It's basically THE BLAIR DWEEB PROJECT, half the movie consisting of Brooke and Caleb hiking to their remote campsite (with nature-phobe Brooke being as annoying as possible), and the other half documenting Jake and Nick's creepy stalking of same down wooded paths until they stumble upon their tent.

Save for a couple of fun stings here and there, such as unidentified figures fleeting by in the background of certain shots, the first half of FOLLOWERS is a trudge not unlike that long hike through the woods. We see it all through their own cameras as they all record their words and actions for editing and uploading as "like"-magnet videos.

Naturally, things will go way too far at a certain point--a point we're very grateful to finally reach after the slow and mostly uneventful buildup.  In its own totally unprepossessing, sorta slapdash way, FOLLOWERS manages to be both likably low-tech and somewhat intriguing.

We wonder who the heck are the masked attackers who suddenly invade Brooke and Caleb's campsite, wielding a gun. Have Nick and Jake flipped out? Is it the rowdy rednecks who earlier recognized the internet celebs at a truckstop and ran them off the road with their pickup?

Or is there something even more sinister going on in those woods, as indicated by those fleeting phantom figures we keeping seeing in the background?

If you make it throught the slow first half, FOLLOWERS evolves into a mildly absorbing little show despite (or maybe because of) an over-dependence on improvised dialogue and a look that still resembles somebody's home videos.  Anyway, I had fun watching it and I guess that counts for a lot.

John Wayne: Same Vehicle Stunt, Two Different Centuries (video)

In John Wayne's classic 1947 western "Angel and the Badman", there's an exciting chase sequence.

Duke's friend Yakima Canutt devised the stunts, including this unusual wagon jump.

First the front wheels pop up...then the back wheels.

They liked this stunt so much, it was repeated three times from different angles.

Fast-forward to 1974, and Duke's in a different chase...
...between two automobiles speeding down a West Coast beach.

Very different vehicle...but very same stunt!
And it looks cool both times.

P.S. "McQ" also featured another great stunt, courtesy of Hal Needham...
...the very first cannon-assisted rollover.

JUST ELVIS: All His Ed Sullivan Show Performances features all 15 songs from Elvis Presley’s three appearances on the show between September 1956 and January 1957, without the show’s other guests. So explosive and radical were these performances, Elvis’ final “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance had to be filmed from the waist up due to the fears and timidity of CBS’s censors.

Elvis: The Great Performances collects three feature documentary films on two DVDs, exploring the rise, music, personality and presence of the man crowned The King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Center Stage captures Elvis’ undeniable physical appeal and unrivaled artistic brilliance as it explores the time between his first TV appearance in 1956 to one of his very last concerts. The Man and The Music offers glimpses into Elvis’ private life and the difficult realities of his unprecedented fame. Featured are rare home movies of Elvis’ friends and family as well as his first recording, a song called “My Happiness” that he recorded at Sun Studios as a gift for his mother. From the Waist Up, narrated by U2’s Bono, follows Elvis’ remarkable trajectory to stardom, from unknown singer to icon in just 12 months. Featured are many of Elvis’ TV performances culminating with his legendary appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Other featured performances include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “All Shook Up,” and “Return To Sender.” The collection’s bonus features include interviews with Elvis Presley band members Scotty Moore & D.J. Fontana, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, and Elvis contemporaries Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.

Newly upgraded from standard definition (720x480, 4x3) to high definition video (1920x1080, 16x9) and digitally enhanced for image clarity and stabilization, three popular “Ed Sullivan Show” collections for The Beatles, The Supremes and The Temptations will also be released:

The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles collects the four entire episodes of “The Ed Sullivan Show” with history-making performances by The Beatles on two DVDs. On February 9, 1964, The Beatles stepped onto Ed Sullivan’s stage to make their U.S. TV debut. 73 million Americans tuned in and “Beatlemania” exploded. In these unforgettable live shows from 1964 and 1965, The Beatles performed 20 songs, including the Number One hits “She Loves You,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Ticket To Ride,” “Yesterday,” “Help!,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and “All My Loving.”

The Best Of The Supremes On The Ed Sullivan Show presents 22 of the Motown legends’ greatest performances on the program on one DVD. Included is The Supremes’ first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in December 1964, which featured a performance of their Number One hit “Come See About Me.” Other timeless performances are showcased, including “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Love Child” and “The Happening.” This collection also includes “Up The Ladder To The Roof” from the only appearance on the show by the “New Supremes” after Diana Ross went on to a solo career.

The Best Of The Temptations On The Ed Sullivan Show spotlights The Temptations’ best performances on the program on one DVD. Included is the group’s debut appearance from May 1967, in which they performed a medley of hits, including “My Girl” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” The collections’ other featured performances include the group’s Number One hit “I Can’t Get Next To You,” a playful version of “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” the Top Ten hit “Psychedelic Shack,” and the 1969 hit single “Runaway Child, Running Wild” with Dennis Edwards replacing David Ruffin. The Temptations’ final 1971 performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” is also included, broadcast just a few months before the show went off the air, for which they performed “Get Ready” and their Number One hit “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).”

Most Fearsome Movie Monster Ever?: "Curse of the Demon" (1957)

Director Jacques Tourneur's original plan was to not show the monster.

But producer Hal E. Chester wanted audiences to see it.

Tourneur believed that no literal monster could match what the viewer could imagine.

Many fans of the film would--in this case anyway--disagree.

"UP IN SMOKE" 40th Anniversary Edition Lights Up April 10 on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD

"UP IN SMOKE"
Celebrate 40 Years of Feeling Very Funny

40th Anniversary Edition Lights Up
April 10, 2018 on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD

Fire up the home entertainment system and call your buds because the ultimate stoner comedy is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The high-larious cannabis cultural epic breakthrough UP IN SMOKE will "... grab you by the poo poo" all over again when it arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD April 10, 2018 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.

A special Deluxe Collector's Edition, pairing the Blu-ray with the original soundtrack on CD and VINYL LP in deluxe packaging, will arrive the following week on 4/20 from Rhino, featuring a newly recorded "2018 version" of the title song "Up In Smoke."

In 1978, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong made their feature film debut in UP IN SMOKE, the outrageously funny classic inspired by their now legendary comedy routines of the early '70s. Following massive success with over 10 million comedy albums sold, four Grammy nominations and a win for Best Comedy Recording for "Los Cochinos," Cheech and Chong took Hollywood by storm when UP IN SMOKE became a smash hit, establishing the pair as the reigning comedy duo of a new generation. Today, the film still has viewers rolling in the aisles and maintains surprising cultural relevance four decades after its original release.

In UP IN SMOKE Cheech and Chong play wannabe musicians and stoners who unwittingly smuggle a van made of marijuana from Mexico to L.A. Their drug-laced humor keeps their spirits high as they unknowingly elude the police and meander their way to an outrageous finale at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood where Cheech performs in a pink tutu and Chong plays drums in a red body suit with a Quaalude logo.

The UP IN SMOKE Blu-ray Combo Pack features a brand new short-form documentary entitled “How Pedro Met the Man: Up In Smoke at 40,” which chronicles the duo’s comedy history, as well as the origins and impact of the film itself. Capturing a complex and fascinating pop culture odyssey, the documentary incorporates new interviews with Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong and producer/director Lou Adler along with archival footage. The Combo Pack is also loaded with previously released bonus material including deleted scenes, commentary, a music video and more.

The UP IN SMOKE Deluxe Collector’s Edition is presented in a 12x12 package, limited to 5,000 copies. The set pairs the Blu-ray with the original soundtrack on CD and VINYL LP, as well as a 7-inch picture disc, oversized “Up In Smoke” rolling papers, a film poster, and booklet with new essays by both Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, along with rare and unseen photos. In addition to the new version of “Up In Smoke,” the CD also features another previously unreleased version of the song from 1978 with an additional Spanish verse by Cheech.

"GHOST IN THE GRAVEYARD" -- Jake Busey and Disney 'Lab Rat' Kelli Berglund to Star in Teen Horror/Thriller

"GHOST IN THE GRAVEYARD" Starring Jake Busey, Kelli Berglund and Nikki Blonsky Moves Into Post-Production

NEW YORK, April 4, 2018 (Newswire.com) - Cellar Door Films' teen thriller "Ghost in the Graveyard" starring Jake Busey ("The Predator"/"Agents of Shield)" as Charlie Sullivan and Kelli Berglund (Disney's "Lab Rats") as his daughter Sally, has begun post-production as they've attached award-winning composer Ceiri Torjussen ("The Canal") to their already dizzying cache of talent.

GITG ("Ghost in the Graveyard") also stars Jason James Richter ("Free Willy"/"High and Outside") as Deputy T, Nikki Blonsky ("Hairspray"/"The Last Movie Star") as Mrs. E, Royce Johnson (Marvel regular, "The Punisher"/"Daredevil") as Sheriff D, Joe D'Onofrio ("Goodfellas", "A Bronx Tale") as Deputy Simmons, Maria Olsen ("Paranormal Activity 3") as the Witch, plus newcomers Olivia Larsen (Zoe), Zebedee Row (Billy Sullivan) and Shiloh Verrico as Little Martha aka The Ghost.

The story begins in a graveyard on a chilling night when a group of friends is playing a kid's game, "Ghost in the Graveyard". As beautiful little children run around gravestones and life comes dangerously close to death, a tragedy kills one of the young girls and changes everyone there for good.

Fast forward 12 years and the story follows the now grown up kids around their sleepy town as the little dead girl comes back to haunt them. Among backstabbing, love triangles and late night bonfires in the woods, Sally Sullivan, played by Kelli Berglund, and her friends have a high school experience quite different from the average American teen.

"I'm thrilled for the audience to be captivated by this story and all the twists and turns that make it unique. There's more to Sally than you’d think, and I'm excited to have had her story in my hands," said Berglund.

GITG filmed in locations in Westchester County, New York (Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Somers, Yorktown and Ossining) over 27 brutally cold winter days and nights, utilizing local children and adults as extras, talent, and crew. Filmmaker Charlie Comparetto (writer/director) is a resident of the area and always pictured it as the setting for Ghost. Charlie is a father of five daughters who, along with his wife, are obsessed with horror films. Post-production is scheduled to wrap this Spring 2018.

Ghost in the Graveyard was written by director Charlie Comparetto 10 years ago after watching his daughters play the game in his backyard. "It was scary. The next day I started writing it. Over the years it morphed from pure horror to more of a teen thriller as my daughters entered their teen years. It became less 'Halloween' and more 'Twilight' or 'Vampire Diaries' probably from my exposure to those shows..."

Cellar Door Films has chosen the GITG franchise as its debut film due to its incredible marketing potential. Everything from a book series, television series and shorts, as well as apps and games are in development. Cellar Door is also developing several other features including The Doctor, Chasing the Snow, and of course GITG the sequel.

Once upon a time…or maybe twice…there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland…

NEW YORK / LONDON / LOS ANGELES – APRIL 04, 2018 – Abramorama announced today a deal with Apple Corps Ltd. and Universal Music Group (UMG) to theatrically release The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, across North America this July in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Abramorama, Apple Corps Ltd. and UMG have teamed to give Beatles fans of all ages the opportunity to come together and share in this visually stunning movie and soundtrack.

Abramorama originally partnered with Apple Corps, Imagine Entertainment, White Horse Pictures, StudioCanal and UMG’s Polygram Entertainment on the Ron Howard documentary The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years. Abramorama has a proven track record in the music-driven film space, partnering numerous times with Neil Young, Pearl Jam and Green Day and now once again with Apple Corps Ltd.

Yellow Submarine was restored in 4K digital resolution by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. The film’s songs and score were remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound at UMG’s Abbey Road Studios by music mix engineer Peter Cobbin. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film’s restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Richard Abramowitz, CEO of Abramorama said, “We’re thrilled to have the privilege of bringing Yellow Submarine back to the big screen so that 3 generations of happy Beatles fans can enjoy the ground-breaking animation and classic tunes and that have long been part of our collective cultural DNA.”

Directed by George Dunning, and written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, Yellow Submarine began its voyage to the screen when Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of ABC’s animated Beatles TV series, approached The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein with a unique vision for a full-length animated feature.

Yellow Submarine, based upon a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including “Eleanor Rigby,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “All You Need Is Love,” and “It’s All Too Much.” When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement, revolutionizing a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques.

Inspired by the generation’s new trends in art, the film resides with the dazzling Pop Art styles of Andy Warhol, Martin Sharp, Alan Aldridge and Peter Blake. With art direction and production design by Heinz Edelmann, Yellow Submarine is a classic of animated cinema, featuring the creative work of animation directors Robert Balser and Jack Stokes with a team of animators and technical artists.

WASTELANDER -- DVD Review by Porfle

You have to give credit to director/writer/actor Angelo Lopes (GUNHEAVY).  Many filmmakers would've taken such an extremely modest budget and made something nice and safe, like a quirky, intimate love story or light rom-com. Lopes, on the other hand, took it and made a freakin' Mad Max movie.

Granted, WASTELANDER (Indican Pictures, 2018) isn't going to fool anyone into thinking Mel Gibson or Thomas Hardy are apt to pop up from behind a rock.  It's more reminiscent of similar low-rent rust-and-grunge efforts from way back such as 1983's "Metalstorm" and "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone", or the more recent "2307: Winter's Dream."

This means lots of desert locations, scrounged tech props, and decrepit sets made from scrap metal and other refuse.  Which is in keeping with the decayed post-apocalyptic landscape through which our hero, Rhyous (Brendan Guy Murphy), wanders in search of "Eden."

With his memory half gone, he's not even sure what "Eden" is, only that he must find it. But a strange cyborg being named Benedict with a robotic body and a holographic computer monitor for a face wants to find it too, and offers to buy Rhyous' services. When he refuses, Benedict sics his ragtag soldiers on him.

But even this is nothing compared to the menace of the marauding group of even-more-ragtag baddies known collectively as The Scourge.  Imagine a group of warmongering losers that even Humungus' crew from "The Road Warrior" would look down upon, and you've got a good idea of how low these guys are.

Fortunately, Rhyous manages to kill a whole bunch of them during various hand-to-hand battles and full-scale laser blaster fights in which he's helped by some of the other outcasts he grudgingly picks up along the way.

These include comedy-relief warrior-wannabe Solek (sort of this movie's equivalent of the Gyro-Captain) and a plucky female fighter named Neve who wants to hook up with Rhyous in more ways than one.

There are many other characters, too many to keep track of, in fact, and I had a good bit of difficulty telling them apart in their big breathing helmets and similar outfits.  The only real constant is Rhyous, one of those quiet, unimposing heroes (a designation he earns mainly by killing so many bad guys) whom you don't want to get wound up since that results in the shooting and the killing and the hurting.

Some of his "Road Warrior" moments come when faced with having to help those weaker and less self-sufficient as himself, and also during a small-scale vehicle chase that must've eaten up a precious percentage of the budget.

Pulp sci-fi gets its due in several scenes, including those laser gun battles with everyone shooting wildly and some other interesting digital effects that modern B-movies can avail themselves of.  The nicely-done "Eden" sequence, on the other hand, elevates the film to the level of really intriguing sci-fi for a few minutes.

As an actor, Murphy isn't Olivier but handles this "taciturn loner bad-ass in black leather" stuff well.  The rest of the cast is good-to-adequate, with special note to Sian Vilaire as Scourge Queen "Miranda" and Lopes himself as the freakish "Benedict."

Technically, the film is all over the place, with some sequences nicely-shot--especially the more futuristic sci-fi stuff--and others, mainly the action sequences, being comprised of too much shaky-cam and choppy editing and some continuity that's pretty hard to follow.

All in all, however, you can't fault WASTELANDER too much for its game effort to turn modest resources into "Mad Max"-style thrills with a little imagination and a lot of ambition.  It's interesting just to watch Angelo Lopes knocking this makeshift post-apocalyptic free-for-all together.

During the climactic comedy chase scene, the Frankenstein Monster (Glenn Strange) pursues Bud and Lou.

Just when they think they've trapped him behind a door, the Monster will punch through it.

The fist is supposed to pass between them, but Lou deliberately stands off his mark, and...pow!

The director loved Lou's reaction, and the rest is history.

Lon Chaney Replaces Injured Glenn Strange as the Monster in "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948) (video)

In this popular Abbott & Costello comedy, Lon Chaney reprises his most famous role, the Wolf Man.

Meanwhile, Glenn Strange makes his third consecutive appearance as the Frankenstein Monster.

But in a climactic scene, Strange breaks his ankle while tossing a stuntwoman through a window.

So Chaney, who hasn't played the Monster since "Ghost of Frankenstein" (1942), gets into the makeup and finishes the scene for Strange.

It's the only time he would play both the Monster and the Wolf Man in the same film.

WITHIN THE DARKNESS -- DVD Review by Porfle

It's interesting to see two different takes on the same horror-movie premise within a short time of each other.  6:66 PM, which we reviewed last month, took on the subject of a fake reality-TV "ghost hunters" show gone horribly wrong when the haunted house they explore turns out to be the real thing.

But that movie was an all-out farce, while WITHIN THE DARKNESS (Indican Pictures, 2016) treats the premise much more seriously. It's still tongue-in-cheek at times, and the first half is buoyed by a rather lighthearted air, but it's also a spooky treat for those looking for more blood-chilling fare.

As in the other film, an ambitious small-time TV producer is shooting a TV pilot about ghost hunters inside a house rigged with prank scares.  Austin (Dave Coyne) is aided by his faithful co-producer and camerawoman Jesse (Tonya Kay), his skeptical cousin Bruce (John C. Bailey), also behind the camera, and his sexy wife Lucy (Erin Cline), who will pose as a sexy occult expert on the show.

The personality quirks and relationships between the characters are played for laughs and popcorn drama at first (Austin's a selfish jerk, Jesse hates Lucy and wants Austin for herself, Lucy is carrying insufferable Austin's child).

They prove somewhat inept at even pretending to evoke the spirits of a very troubled family who, according to legend, died mysteriously and horribly in a secluded house in the woods. (The stunning location used is a real dream house.)

But things get real when an actual psychic medium named Megan (Shanna Forrestall), a regal Goth goddess whom Bruce found on Craigslist, shows up and proclaims the house genuinely occupied by very hostile entities.

While Austin deems her just the thing to spice up the show, Lucy is the only one to heed Megan's dire warning that they take this attempt to rouse the angry spirits within that dark, spooky house very seriously.

It's no EXORCIST, or anywhere near it, and the success ratio of its jump-scares is about 50-50, but WITHIN THE DARNESS is such an atmospheric little chiller that I found myself caught up in it.

At times betraying its low budget, it's slickly done nonetheless, with a sharply-written script, a steadily-mounting pace, and a talented cast to pull off the nicely-staged setpieces.

These include some moments of genuine, unnerving shock that had me jumping out of my seat a few times as the lightheartedness of the earlier scenes is tempered with a growing dread.

Director and co-writer (with Cheryl Compton) Jonathan Zuck gets that feeling of creeping through a dark, scary house at night just right, especially when twisted, gargoyle-like faces suddenly appear in the most unexpected places.

WITHIN THE DARKNESS probably isn't the scariest movie you'll watch this year, and maybe not even this month.  But if you're like me, it'll be one of the most deliciously fun haunted house thrillers you've seen in quite a while.
