About Lumos

Lumos is fighting for every child’s right to a family by transforming care systems around the world. We are an international charity striving for a future where every child is raised in a safe, loving home, supported by family to help them thrive.

On average more than 80% of children in orphanages have living parents, and research proves that these institutions can harm a child’s growth and development. Yet there are still an estimated 5.4 million children trapped in institutions globally.

Lumos sheds light on the root causes of family separation – poverty, conflict and discrimination – and demonstrates that children can safely be united with families. By pressing governments to reform care systems, and by building global expertise and capacity with partners, we ensure no child is forgotten.

Founded by author J.K. Rowling, we are lighting a path to a brighter future where all children can grow up in a safe and loving family.

We believe in a family for all children. We are Lumos.

Was TCM's Robert Osborne Ever On "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES"? (video)

Years before gaining fame as the film-savvy host of Turner Classic Movies...

...Robert Osborne appeared in the 1962 pilot episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Which, at first, was titled "The Hillbillies of Beverly Hills."

More than just a guest actor, Osborne was right there at the series' start.

Later, of course, we'd know him as the soft-spoken gentleman...

...who introduced our favorite classic films on TCM.

All the Glenn Strange Monster Scenes From "HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN" (1944) (video)

Although the original Frankenstein Monster, Boris Karloff, stars in this film...

...the Monster is played this time by actor-stuntman Glenn Strange.

Karloff is the mad scientist who restores the Monster to full power.
Strange, the fourth actor to star as the Monster, is memorable in the role.

In 1942, he played a werewolf in "The Mad Monster."

He would later gain television fame as Butch Cavendish on "The Lone Ranger"...
...and as Sam the Bartender in the 1960s western "Gunsmoke."

Strange enjoyed recounting how Karloff gave him advice on how to play the Monster.

Makeup master Jack Pierce had been searching for a new Monster when he spotted Strange.
The brawny actor's imposing physique and craggy features convinced Pierce he'd found his Monster.

He would play the Frankenstein Monster two more times, in "House of Dracula" (1945)...
...and "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948).

His likeness adorns much of the Frankenstein Monster merchandise...
...and even accompanied some of Karloff's obituary notices.

FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER -- Movie Review by Porfle

I've been a bad movie lover for so long, I can sit back and enjoy movies like FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER (1965) just as much as I would CITIZEN KANE or THE SOUND OF MUSIC, whereas your average normal person might find both their gag reflex and their flight instinct activated by the very sight of it.

I pity such people their inability to watch stuff like this with the same giddy delight I felt as I ordered the DVD from Amazon, knowing that when it arrived, I would be able to immerse myself in low budget, ineptly made, but wonderfully entertaining sci-fi goodness about aliens from Mars who have come to Earth to kidnap women as breeding stock to help repopulate their atomic war-ravaged planet.

As if that weren't enough, NASA scientist Dr. Adam Steele (venerable actor James "Jim" Karen in an early role) and his co-worker Karen (Nancy Marshall) have just made space travel safer for humans by creating an android astronaut, whom they've named "Colonel Frank Saunders" (Robert Reilly).

Right after Frank is launched into space, the Martians shoot his rocket down, leaving the horribly disfigured humanoid robot roaming the countryside killing people a la "Frankenstein."

Not only am I not making any of that stuff up, but it's even nuttier than it sounds. The head Martians are played by former Playboy Playmate and Three Stooges co-star Marilyn Hanold (as "Princess Marcuzan") and familiar face Lou Cutell (LITTLE BIG MAN, PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE) as her second-in-command Dr. Nadir, a bald, white-skinned alien with pointed ears and a high camp sense of humor that kicks in whenever he's ordered to blow something up or shoot it down.

Their bargain-basement spaceship is also populated by a gaggle of henchmen whose spacesuits, confusingly, make them look like Earth astronauts. There's also a tall, brawny alien played by the great Bruce Glover (CHINATOWN, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, WALKING TALL), recognizable even under heavy makeup in his second movie role. He also plays the fearsome space monster of the title, who will indeed meet "Frankenstein" during the film's furious climax.

The story begins in Florida, where, at a press conference, we're treated to the sight of Frank rather comically going freeze-frame during a press conference and having to be hustled back to the lab for repairs by Adam and Karen.

Then we're whisked off to Puerto Rico after Frank's disfiguring crash, allowing the director to shoot a lengthy montage of the two scientists riding a dinky motor scooter along scenic motorways and beachfronts to the film's sappy and rather incongruous love theme, "To Have And To Hold" by The Distant Cousins.

While the two young lovers search for their runaway robo-astronaut, the Martians terrorize the countryside kidnapping bikini-clad women from beaches and pool parties, disintegrating any men who get in their way with sunlight-reflecting ray guns like the ones used in TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE.

Also like that film, this one is surprisingly well-edited, with a gradually quickening pace that leads to a fast-moving, exciting finale that sees the Martians attacked by our air force and Frank, his rational mind now restored, going mano-a-mano with that really cool space monster.

Just as Johnny Depp claims in ED WOOD that he could construct a whole movie out of stock footage, this one goes a long way toward doing just that by using tons of the stuff for any scenes involving either the military or NASA spacecraft (including much footage from Mercury launches and orbital photography). The final five frenetic minutes or so are evidence that the film's editor was having a ball putting this thing together, and it's infectious.

Granted, the shamelessly warped FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER would fit comfortably onto any list of the worst films ever made, but that doesn't keep it from being just as much fun as a lot of "good" movies that I could name. Maybe even more fun if, like me, you're just a tiny bit warped too.

Robo-Astronaut Freezes Up During Press Conference ("FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER", 1965) (video)

Scientist Jim Karen has made space travel safer for humans...

...by creating a lifelike robot astronaut.

But during his debut in front of a group of reporters...

..."Frank" will suddenly go freeze-frame like it was the end of a "CHiPs" episode.

Saban Films Acquires North American Rights To Archstone Entertainment's "THE HYPERIONS"

SABAN FILMS ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO ARCHSTONE ENTERTAINMENT’S

"THE HYPERIONS"

Theatrical release is set for February 2022

[LOS ANGELES, CA] —Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Archstone Entertainment’s superhero film The Hyperions starring Cary Elwes (Saw, The Princess Bride), Penelope Mitchell (Hellboy), Tanner Buchanan (“Cobra Kai”), Elaine Tan (Tully), and Alphonso McAuley (“Walk of Shame”). Saban Films is planning a theatrical release in February of 2022.

The Hyperions was written and directed by Jon McDonald, and produced by American Millimetre’s McDonald, Justin Bell Productions’ Justin Bell and ReKon Productions’ Jon Michael Kondrath. Executive producers are ReKon Productions’ Lisha Yakub, and Archstone Entertainment’s Jack Sheehan, Scott Martin, and Michael Slifkin.

In 1960 Professor Ruckus Mandulbaum invented a device that enables humans to have a super power and took in three down-on-their-luck youths, creating an unusual family of superheroes who quickly rose to fame and prestige.

Over time, the family fractured and the Professor replaced them with a new set of superheroes. However, now adults, they seek their Titan badges back, even if it means robbing the Professor's museum and taking a few hostages.

The deal was negotiated with Steve Break on behalf of Saban Films and Jack Sheehan on behalf of the filmmakers.  Archstone Entertainment is representing the worldwide rights to the film.
Archstone Entertainment and Saban Films previously collaborated on the 2020 film Death of Me starring Maggie Q and Luke Hemsworth.

The holy grail for many rabid, true-blue George Kennedy fans...

KILL LIST (2011) -- Movie Review by Porfle

One of those bad-vibes flicks that stays in your gut after you watch it like a meal that doesn't agree with you, KILL LIST (2011) is a movie that may not agree with you, either.  But it's well worth staying with till the end if you have a strong stomach.

Director Ben Wheatley's mix of traditional and documentary style camerawork keeps us right in the story of an out-of-work hitman named Jay (Neil Maskell, ATONEMENT) whose relationship with fiesty wife Shel (MyAnna Buring, THE DEVIL'S CURSE, THE DESCENT) grows more volatile each day.

During a disastrous dinner with old military buddy Gal (Michael Smiley, BURKE AND HARE) and his creepy girlfriend Fiona (Emma Fryer), Jay is offered a lucrative job in which he and Gal will eliminate a number of targets on a list given to them by a mysterious client.

After a long buildup showing Jay going through his everyday life with Shel and their beloved son Sam, the start of his murderous mission with Gal takes the movie down a dark path that gets more twisted and frightening with each new revelation.  The first victim is a priest, whom the two hitmen assume must be guilty of some sexual transgression and thus deserving of his fate.

The second is a man who refers to himself as a "librarian" and possesses something so horrifying it prompts an irate Jay to dispatch him as brutally as possible.  This sequence, involving some very realistic gore effects, will either have you glued to the screen or scrambling for the door.

What first appears to be simply an ultra-violent thriller makes a sudden detour through the twilight zone before veering into full-out horror territory after Jay and Gal begin to realize just how sinister their unknown clients are.

Thus follows a descent into paranoia that infects every aspect of their lives as it becomes clear that they're part of a larger and more terrifying agenda than they could've imagined.

The final scenes, which take place in a dark forest in the dead of night, have an almost BLAIR WITCH vibe only much more visceral.

Lead performances are all fine, with Neil Maskell totally convincing as a violent man who's not inhuman--he loves his family--but frightening because he's a human capable of the most monstrous acts.  MyAnna Buring is a strong presence as Shel, making her love-hate relationship with Jay convincing and giving her character a no-nonsense resolve that will be amply displayed later on.

As Gal, Michael Smiley has a less showy but equally pivotal role, while Emma Fryer's Fiona is just plain spooky.  Much of the dialogue is improvised to give it a natural quality.

To give away any more of the plot would be a disservice to potential viewers, so I'll just say that the rest of KILL LIST is a journey into some really dark, claustrophobic horror that's both pulse-poundingly tense, relentlessly downbeat, and, finally, downright grotesque.

And if you've seen any of the VACATION movies (CHRISTMAS VACATION in particular) you're also probably familiar with Randy Quaid as Clark Griswold's cousin "Eddie."

So, we thought: why not combine the two?

THE GHOST IN THE INVISIBLE BIKINI (1966) -- Movie Review by Porfle

Currently watching: THE GHOST IN THE INVISIBLE BIKINI (1966), the last American-International teen flick to bear even the slightest resemblance to the studio's original "Beach Party" series that began in 1963 and lasted until original stars Frankie and Annette had moved on to other things and only a few hardy supporting players and extras still remained.

For the first time, there's no reference whatsoever to the beach or surfing. In a repeat of the earlier PAJAMA PARTY, the action takes place in a large mansion (this time, it's the haunted hideaway of recently-deceased Hiram Stokely, played by a very aged Boris Karloff) and its swimming pool, giving the cast an excuse to cavort in bikinis and swim trunks and flail around to the music of a bland rock 'n' roll band, the Bobby Fuller Four.

Basil Rathbone (SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, "Sherlock Holmes" series) plays Hiram's crooked attorney, Reginald Ripper, who plans to eliminate the old man's heirs after they assemble for the reading of his will. They include beach-movie veterans Tommy Kirk and Deborah Walley, along with venerable comic actress Patsy Kelly as "Myrtle Forbush."

Aiding in Ripper's deadly scheme is his cohort J. Sinister Hulk (Jesse "Maytag Repairman" White), along with series regular Bobbi Shaw and Benny Rubin as Princess Yolanda and Chief Chicken Feather. All three characters are holdovers from PAJAMA PARTY, although Rubin replaces an ailing Buster Keaton who originated the role.

Of course, Harvey Lembeck is on hand as motorcycle gang leader Eric Von Zipper, with his usual motley mob of sycophantic cycle stupes. This time, he falls in love with Princess Yolanda, thus giving the writers an excuse to have Von Zipper and crew scurrying around the mansion along with everyone else once the plot, as it is, finally goes into high gear.

When Myrtle's nephew Bobby (Aron Kincaid, whom I think of as "the male Joy Harmon") shows up with a double decker bus full of swinging teens who turn the mansion into party central, the search for Hiram's hidden fortune quickly becomes a frenetic free-for-all as the rightful heirs clash with Ripper's dastardly baddies and a gaggle of spooks and monsters have the freaked-out teens going ape.

This will lead to an extravagantly silly finale that's like a deluxe live-action episode of "Scooby-Doo", only dumber and less coherent as everyone runs screaming hither and yon throughout the mansion (finally ending up in old Hiram's ghastly torture chamber) while some of the hoariest gags and haunted house tropes imaginable are recycled by former Three Stooges writer Elwood Ullman, who co-wrote the script with beach-party regular Louis M. Heyward.

Amidst all this, the simple romantic subplot between Tommy Kirk and Deborah Walley is barely given a chance to develop. Meanwhile, Ripper's gorgeous but evil daughter Sinistra (Quinn O'Hara) directs all her considerable seductive powers toward eliminating Myrtle's nephew Bobby (I forgot why), a goal that's repeatedly thwarted by her extreme nearsightedness.

Also appearing in the film are Nancy Sinatra (who sings the wince-inducing "Geronimo"), a young Danny Thomas discovery named Piccola Pupa (who's cute but not much of a singer), famed gorilla suit actor George Burrows as "Monstro", and former silent film star Francis X. Bushman (BEN HUR), who joins the rest of the cast's rather impressive group of vintage stars having some late-career fun (we hope) in this bit of nonsense.

Not the least of these is the great Boris Karloff, whose scenes with gorgeous Susan Hart were added, according to Wikipedia, after AIP producers James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff were unhappy with the film and thought it needed improvement. In their framing scenes, Karloff, as Hiram Stokely, is awakened from death's slumber by the ghost of his dead wife Cecily (Hart) and told that they will be reunited in the afterlife if he performs one final good deed.

The result is Hart's character, clad in an "invisible bikini", being awkwardly inserted into already filmed scenes as a mischievous but helpful ghost, with cutaways to Karloff observing the action in his crystal ball and making various comments being fed to him from off-camera.

One of the film's best assets is its use of lavish sets that are obviously left over from other AIP productions. That, along with the interesting cast and an occasionally infectious sense of fun, are just about the only reasons to recommend THE GHOST IN THE INVISIBLE BIKINI to all but the most diehard beach movie fans and lovers of bad movies in general.  As part of the latter group, I enjoyed it, but others may find it just shy of unwatchable.

The Creators of ALIEN Bring A New Terror To Earth

Something very strange is happening in the quiet coastal village of Potters Bluff, where tourists and transients are warmly welcomed… then brutally murdered. But even more shocking is when these slain strangers suddenly reappear as normal, friendly citizens around town. Now the local sheriff (James Farentino of THE FINAL COUNTDOWN) and an eccentric mortician (Academy Award® winner Jack Albertson of WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) must uncover the horrific secret of a community where some terrifying traditions are alive and well… and no one is ever really DEAD & BURIED.

Melody Anderson (FLASH GORDON), Lisa Blount (PRINCE OF DARKNESS), and Robert Englund (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) co-star in this genuinely chilling horror hit written by Ronald Shusett and Dan O’Bannon (ALIEN), directed by Gary A. Sherman (POLTERGEIST III), and featuring ultra-grisly gore effects by Oscar® winner Stan Winston (JURASSIC PARK). In honor of its 40th Anniversary, Blue Underground is proud to present DEAD & BURIED in an eye-popping new restoration approved by Director of Photography Steven Poster, ASC (DONNIE DARKO), scanned in 4K 16-bit from its 35mm IP, with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, and packed with exclusive new and archival Extras!
