Just watched Irwin Allen's THE LOST WORLD (1960) for the first time since I was a kid and saw it on one of the network primetime movies (I think it was "NBC Sunday Night At The Movies").

Claude Rains makes a great Professor Challenger in this version of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic dinosaur adventure. Jill St. John, Michael Rennie, David Hedison, Richard Haydn, Jay Novello, and Fernando Lamas also star. 

 As usual, substituting iguanas with fins glued onto them for dinosaurs just looks lame. I still prefer the 1925 silent version with stop-motion animated dinosaurs by Willis O'Brien, who would do the SPFX for "King Kong" eight years later.

This version is less about the dinosaurs and more about the hazardous jungle expedition, the various interpersonal conflicts, and a third act consisting mainly of the group navigating an underground tunnel filled with lava.

 

During this time they're kept busy staying one step ahead of bloodthirsty cannibals as they try to find a subterranean escape route from the prehistoric jungle plateau on which they've been trapped before an impending earthquake brings the whole place down around them.

Director Irwin Allen handled this sort of material well, and the production looks like it had a fairly generous budget.

Ultimately, though, it's only sporadically entertaining, with Claude Rains' blustery performance and Jill St. John's lighthearted sex appeal providing most of the interest.

DINOSAURS: GIANTS OF PATAGONIA -- DVD Review by Porfle

From the very first second of DINOSAURS: GIANTS OF PATAGONIA (2007), things pop, fly, and explode toward the viewer.  The "Ooh! Ahh!" effect of it all is somewhat lost watching the two-dimensional DVD version of this made-for-3D IMAX film, as I did, although it still retains much of its pictorial grandeur. 

Writer-director Marc Fafard's dinosaur documentary is filled with beautiful vistas of Argentina, where the oldest and largest dinosaur fossils have been found.  As Donald Sutherland's familiar voice lulls us into the story, we're taken back 65 million years to the point in which a comet the size of Mount Everest is about to slam into the Earth and spell doom for its inhabitants (in a scene similar to the opening of ARMAGEDDON).  We'll witness the dramatic extinction of the dinosaurs later on, but first we skip back in time even farther to the Early Cretaceous period, where we meet some of the largest animals ever to walk the face of the planet.  

The CGI used to bring these creatures to life isn't quite on the JURASSIC PARK level but it's better than most.  The film follows the progress of two main characters, Strong One the male Argentinosaurus and Long Tooth the female Giganotosaurus, throughout their lives as they search for food and struggle to survive encounters with various predators.  At one point Long Tooth and her hunting pack attack Strong One's Argentinosaurus herd but are no match for the huge beasts.  Several other species of dinosaur are seen along the way, including the ever-popular T-Rex and a flying pterosaur with a wing span of over twelve meters.



These colorful sequences help offset the dry narrative tone and the slower stretches in which we observe real-life paleontologist Rodolfo Coria at work uncovering the fossils from which much of this historical data is derived.  It's interesting stuff, of course, watching this diligent explorer about his meticulous work, but a bit of a letdown after the dinosaur scenes. 

Fafard takes his camera anywhere it can possibly go in order to capture dynamic views of Argentina's most primitive regions.  Dizzying POV shots glide slowly over the landscape, often directly into the frame.  The CGI dinosaurs are extremely well-integrated into these settings. 

The DVD from Image Entertainment is in 1.78:1 widescreen with English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.  There are no subtitles.  In addition to trailers, the bonus menu contains a documentary entitled "The Lizard King" which is equal in length to the main feature and boasts a wealth of additional dinosaur information presented in a seriocomic style. 

While the non-3D DVD of DINOSAURS: GIANTS OF PATAGONIA may seem a little, uhh..."flat" compared to its stereoscopic counterpart--especially during the parts where we're watching people dig up old bones--the visuals remain very impressive and the CGI dinosaur footage is among the best I've seen.

Dave Allen was one of film's leading stop-motion animators.

His work can be seen in such films as "The Crater Lake Monster", "Equinox", and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids."

In 1972 Volkswagen hired him to recreate the classic King Kong for a TV commercial.

The woman is Fay Wray's daughter, Victoria Riskin.

The commercial was aired only once.

Volkswagen pulled it because viewers didn't remember the car...just Kong.

SON OF KONG -- Movie Review by Porfle

(Caution: the last couple of paragraphs contain spoilers.)

 

I watched SON OF KONG (1933) again last night, and this toned-down sequel affected me just the same as ever. Most of the ingredients of KING KONG are there, but mixed together in such a different way as to explore whole new areas of cinematic enchantment.

The opening titles are reminiscent of KONG at first, but then they go into a cast montage and the music shifts dramatically to the jaunty but melancholy "Runaway Blues", and darned if that alone doesn't make me start to get misty-eyed. 

The stop-motion creatures are great as usual (although with little participation from special effects wizard Willis O'Brien, who was disillusioned with the project), and there's an exciting climax which anyone who saw this as a kid should vividly recall.

 

After the disaster of Kong's opening night in New York, showman Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) is forced to flee lawsuits and creditors by going into the shipping business with Captain Englehorn (Frank Reicher) in the South Seas. 

Along the way he meets a sweet young down-on-her-luck woman named Hilda (Helen Mack), loses his ship to mutineers, and ends up back on Skull Island, where he and the rest encounter a baby Kong who protects them from danger as they search for a fabled island treasure. 

There's considerably less tension in this laidback sequel--the nightmare of KONG is over, and despite the hardships it caused this seems to have been cathartic for Denham as a person. He's no longer so manic and driven, content now to be Englehorn's business partner, and can enjoy little things in life like a two-bit tent show with dancing monkeys and an adorable young girl (Hilda) playing the ukelele.

 

The romance between Denham and Helen Mack's plucky, lovable Hilda is low-key and very sweet, more so because of the recurring "Runaway Blues" theme. The trip to the island and their adventures on it aren't dark and heavy as in the previous film, but KONG had already been done. Rather than trying to do it over again or continue its nightmarish tone, SON OF KONG gives us a fairytale ending.

It's not as much a sequel as it is a prolonged denouement--a long sigh of relief after the horrors that ended when Kong hit the pavement. All the sexual tension and Freudian complexities of KING KONG have been resolved, leaving Denham free to lead a simpler life with Hilda and, we assume, a happy ending. 

And then, of course there's little Kong (known by many as "Kiko") himself.  Some viewers fault the film for being too comedic, and indeed, this 12-foot albino ape is quite the clown.  Still, his interactions with Denham and Hilda are fascinating to watch, as are several furious battles between him and a variety of giant island creatures.  While rushed into production the same year as its predecessor, SON OF KONG still boasts some amazing special effects.

 

The grand finale is a terrifying earthquake which threatens to destroy the island, with Denham, Hilda, and Englehorn scrambling to escape in a rickety rowboat.  In the film's most heartbreaking moment, little Kong's foot is caught in a crevice as the island begins to sink beneath the waves, and as he wails in distress you can clearly make out the words: "Mom-my!  Mom-my!" 

Seeing Denham and Hilda at the rail of a rescue ship in their robes, as it begins to sink in that they're really in love and "Runaway Blues" creeps in one last time, still plucks the old heartstrings.  (It's here that Denham the "no funny business" mug finally cracks up and goes sappy.)  More than anything, SON OF KONG is, to me, a lovely fairytale adventure that gets a little more magical every time I see it.

TEENAGE CAVE MAN (1958) -- Movie Review by Porfle

Currently watching: Roger Corman's TEENAGE CAVE MAN (1958), starring a young Robert Vaughn as a rebellious teenager in an animal hide mini-skirt who chafes at the tribal law forbidding him to cross the river to the lush and fertile land beyond.

Naturally, this is all in the vein of the then-current craze for teen rebel flicks such as American-International's other genre films I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN, and BLOOD OF DRACULA, and of course the grandaddy of them all, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE with James Dean.

For Corman, of course, it's a matter of spending as little money as possible (approx. $70,000 according to IMDb) to mold the semblance of a movie out of such meager elements as a barren mountainside location (with cave) and a bunch of people garbed in mangy animal skins.

 

This is augmented by generous stock footage, mainly the familiar iguana-saurus stuff from the much-earlier ONE MILLION B.C. and various other clips to help set the prehistoric mood.  

Vaughn himself sports a stylish caveman ensemble and is both clean-shaven and coiffed in the same modern hairstyle he'd later retain as TV's "Man From U.N.C.L.E."  Older members of his hillside clan are a bit more hirsute, with beards befitting their status as the keepers of "The Word"--which the young caveman is dead set on violating by venturing into the forbidden zone and perhaps even encountering the dreaded creature whose very touch is said to cause death.

Joseph Hamilton (CAT BALLOU, ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES) and Michael Shayne (THE NEANDERTHAL MAN, "The Adventures of Superman") are two of the older actors struggling to hide their embarrassment as tribal elders. Frank De Kova gets to gnaw on the rocky scenery as a hothead who keeps calling for Vaughn to die for his blasphemous actions against tribal law.

 

Some of the younger castmembers include Ed Nelson (A BUCKET OF BLOOD), Jonathan Haze (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), Barboura Morris (THE TRIP), and Corman regular Beach Dickerson (CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA), who plays multiple roles including a boy who gets sucked into some quicksand. The very statuesque Darah Marshall ("Lock Up", "Bachelor Father") plays Vaughn's girlfriend, "The Blonde Maiden", in her only film role.

The dialogue is a bit stage-pretentious here and there, complete with the occasional "Aye." Acting is okay, considering these players couldn't have had much to go on in developing their characters.

Vaughn, for the most part, is likably competent but resembles a frat kid hanging around in the wilderness as a pledge challenge. He does, at one point, get to invent the bow and arrow, although it looks like the dime store variety. 

 

Production values are meager to say the least, except for a very good bear costume that's convincingly worn by Dickerson. Other animal props are not so well done.  A big plus is a characteristically bombastic score by the great Albert Glasser, who was famous for wielding the studio orchestra like a blunt instrument.

How much you enjoy TEENAGE CAVE MAN will depend mostly on whether or not you're in the mood to put aside all expectations and lightly indulge in something pleasantly goofy for about 65 minutes. The fact that there's a nifty twist ending left me feeling surprisingly good about the whole thing.

For the first time, JURASSIC WORLD fans will have the chance to see this impressive creature and become immersed within her massive Aquarium Observatory.  Appearing to span over 60 feet in length and tipping the scales at over 30K pounds through stunning state-of-the-art visual effects, the Mosasaurus is a sight to behold as she moves just inches away from guests throughout her glass enclosure filled with the equivalent of 3.5 million gallons of water.

Universal Creative collaborated with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to bring the Mosasaurus to life and to capture the realism of her underwater environment using a combination of spectacular visual effects and cutting-edge technologies, including the use of motion parallax, a technique that shifts the guest’s perspective of the Mosasaurus as she moves throughout the tank.

The team also employed a series of lighting enhancements allowing the aquarium to intuitively shift from day to night, as well as visual changes to the environment during inclement weather, thus creating a variety of visual scenarios guests can experience based on when they experience the ride.

“Jurassic World—The Ride” will debut an original storyline that takes place within the theme park as depicted in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s film, JURASSIC WORLD, on the day the Indominus rex escapes.

The exciting thrill ride will soar to new heights with the addition of several iconic dinosaurs from the movie, including the colossal Indominus rex and the magnificent aquatic Mosasaurus that will mesmerize onlookers in her natural habitat from behind a three million gallon glass encased Aquarium Observatory tank.

“Jurassic World—The Ride” comes to life under the direction of the award-winning and inspired minds at Universal Creative, the Academy Award®-winning special-effects visionaries at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., Universal Pictures and acclaimed filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow and Frank Marshall.

The aesthetics of “Jurassic World—The Ride” will be dramatically enhanced welcoming guests to a reimagined space reflective of the JURASSIC WORLD films. Engaging and interactive queue-line videos featuring facts and information about the dinosaurs within the ride will set the tone for the expedition ahead, as guests learn more about these imposing prehistoric creatures that first roamed the earth more than 65 million years ago.

Once aboard specially designed rafts, guests will navigate the lush environs of dense vegetation, traversing new areas besieged with towering dinosaurs meandering at just an arm’s length away from visitors.  Encounters with such docile creatures as the Stegosaurus and Parasaurolophus will quickly turn awry as predatory Velociraptors and Dilophosaurus begin to wreak havoc, turning guests from spectators to prey.  When the Tyrannosaurus rex begins to battle one of the attraction’s new ferocious dinosaurs, the rafts will spill down a treacherous 84-foot waterfall as the sole means of escape.

Located adjacent to the ride will be a new elaborately themed “Raptor Encounter” where Blue, the most beloved Velociraptor from the JURASSIC WORLD franchise, will engage guests in daring face-to-face encounters.

...who would later play Don Knotts' girlfriend in "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" (1966).

Joan and Cesare share a swim which, at times, is quite revealing.

For a kid-friendly dinosaur movie, the scene is startlingly mature.

It's the sort of thing that would have boys in 1961 coming back for repeat viewings.

The accomplished group is joined by co-stars JAMES CROMWELL (Babe) as Benjamin Lockwood, a wealthy entrepreneur who was Dr. John Hammond’s partner in creating Jurassic Park; JUSTICE SMITH (The Get Down) as Franklin Webb, Claire’s whip-smart hacker in the Dinosaur Protection Group, who is more comfortable being the “guy in the chair” at home base than in the middle of action; DANIELLA PINEDA (The Detour) as Dr. Zia Rodriguez, a genius paleo-veterinarian whose abilities in this archaic sub-specialty have never been tested on live dinosaurs; RAFE SPALL (Prometheus) as Eli Mills, Lockwood’s right-hand man who recruits Claire and Owen to bring the dinosaurs to a private reserve; TED LEVINE (Shutter Island) as Wheatley, a tough-asnails mercenary that Mills puts in charge to run the ground operation at Isla Nublar; TOBY JONES (Captain America series) as Eversoll, brought in by Mills to supervise the operations at Lockwood estate after the rescue mission; GERALDINE CHAPLIN (A Monster Calls) as Iris, housekeeper of the estate and keeper of family secrets; and ISABELLA SERMON, who makes her debut as Lockwood’s infectiously optimistic granddaughter, Maisie, a 10-year-old who has lived at the mansion her entire life.  

Series stalwarts BD WONG and JEFF GOLDBLUM reprise their roles as, respectively, Dr. Henry Wu and Dr. Ian Malcolm.  Wu, a corrupt geneticist whose name is synonymous with InGen, is as near-sighted as ever in his pursuit of scientific breakthroughs.  For his part, eccentric mathematician Malcolm first predicted doom for Hammond’s Jurassic Park a quarter of a century prior.  His unparalleled grasp on chaos theory and those who abuse power will prove invaluable…especially as Owen and Claire uncover a most deadly endgame.
