LOONEY TUNES: RABBITS RUN -- DVD Review by Porfle

Devoted fans of the classic 40s-50s Merry Melodies and Looney Tunes cartoons from Warner Brothers never know what they're going to get these days when they see their favorite characters revived in new, "updated" versions.  It's pretty hit-or-miss since some current writers and animators get what made the old characters tick, while others, bless 'em, just plain don't.

The people behind the original feature-length cartoon movie LOONEY TUNES: RABBITS RUN get it.  But to their credit, instead of simply recreating the old stuff, they've taken familiar characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, Elmer Fudd, Marvin the Martian, and Yosemite Sam, among others, and cast them in a dizzying screwball comedy that's a cross between a Bob Hope romp and IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.

As a world-weary New York cabbie, Bugs gets to downplay his old smarty-pants persona and serve as straight man for Lola Bunny, a flighty, valley-girlish amateur perfume inventor who hopes to take the Paris fragrance industry by storm with her intoxicating new formula.

But when the military finds out that Lola's new perfume is also an invisibility formula, they'll stop at nothing to get it.  The sight of Foghorn Leghorn as an overbearing Army general ordering around his minions, including agents Elmer Fudd and Cecil the Turtle, is odd indeed.

The secret of the formula is also discovered by Lola's former department store boss, Giovanni (the opera singer in the 1948 classic "Long-Haired Hare").  He follows her and Bugs all the way to Paris along with an avaricious Yosemite Sam (smuggling himself aboard the plane squeezed into an old lady's dog carrier) and everyone else who can't wait to get their paws on that precious pink atomizer.

It's not your typical Looney Tunes plot, but if you love the old cartoons--in addition to appreciating the cockeyed appeal of screwball comedies such as BRINGING UP BABY and the later WHAT'S UP, DOC? (to coin a phrase)--you should find yourself enjoying this breezy, lightning-paced, lighthearted adventure as much as your kids.  (Or if you're like me, somebody else's kids.)

Bugs and Lola are a great team, whether leading the bad guys in a frenetic car chase through the streets of New York, posing as stewardesses on a flight to Paris (Bugs manages to get into drag again, of course) during which they end up falling out of the plane, and finally being kidnapped by none other than Marvin the Martian and taken to his deep space headquarters where he plans something nefarious with Lola's formula.

More hilarity ensues with the appearance of those eternally giddy, stereotypically-gay gophers, Mac and Tosh, in their fabulous yacht.  Their song-and-dance extravaganza, "Girl, You're Fabulous", is a hoot, as is Lola's big number "Smell in My Mind" ("I've got a smell in my mind and I'm gonna let it loose on the world").

The great Daffy Duck brings his own prodigious persona into the mix in fine style as a fellow cab driver unwillingly caught up in the action.  Also appearing in lesser, but no less welcome capacity are Speedy Gonzalez as Lola's landlord and Pepe Le Pew as an eau-de-cologne magnate.

The current animators at Warner Brothers do a great job with whatever kind of computer magic they use nowadays to simulate the full cel animation of yesteryear.  Not only that, but the time they save by not having to draw as many cels as they did in the old days is used to make the artwork lush and beautiful to look at.  (I kept being reminded of another visually pleasing Warner Brothers cartoon feature from 1962, GAY PURR-EE.)

The DVD from Warner Home Video is in matted widescreen with 5.1 surround.  Soundtracks and subtitles are in multiple languages.  "Best Friends", the pilot for 2011's "The Looney Tunes Show" featuring Bugs and Daffy on a quiz show called "Best Friendies", is probably the most enjoyable bonus feature.  The three "Road Runner" digi-cartoons I personally found unappealing--seeing a more realistically-rendered CGI version Wile E. Coyote getting mangled like roadkill is a little off-putting.  "I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat" (starring guess who?) is done the same way but is a bit more palatable.

But for pure fun that's fun to look at, LOONEY TUNES: RABBITS RUN is well worth getting caught up in for awhile.  It's made by people who appreciate the original Looney Tunes cartoons, and easily avoids being just a pallid facsimile of them.

"Tootsie" Voted the Best Movie of All Time in "Time Out" New York Poll

TOOTSIE VOTED THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME IN TIME OUT NEW YORK POLL

www.timeout.com/100bestmovies

[New York, NY] July 28, 2015: A Time Out New York poll to find the 100 best movies of all time declares Tootsie the best movie ever made.

At No. 2 in the poll came The Godfather, starring Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, and No. 3 came A Woman Under the Influence, starring Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk.

Time Out New York exclusively polled actors on both sides of the Atlantic to discover the 100 best movies of all time.

BURBANK, CA (May 5, 2015) – What happens when Bugs Bunny becomes embroiled in a scheme surrounding the invention of a highly-sought after invisibility spray? The result is a mad-cap adventure set in New York City and Paris titled Looney Tunes Rabbits Run. This brand-new, original animated film will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) Aug 4, 2015 and will retail for $19.98 SRP.

In her spare time, Lola is an amateur perfume maker who’s convinced one day she’ll concoct the world’s most beautiful fragrance and sell it to the House of Moufette in Paris. Unbeknownst to Bugs, Lola, in one of her attempts to create the next big fragrance, has inadvertently invented an invisibility spray, and now the whole world is on their tails to steal her precious concoction!

On the run to Paris, Bugs and Lola must outsmart everyone from government officials, to Lola’s greedy department store boss, Giovanni and even Yosemite Sam, all of whom are after Lola’s “scent-sational” invisibility spray. VALENTINE MAGIC ON LOVE ISLAND (1980) -- Movie Review by Porfle

A billion years from now, when they're talking about the worst of the worst made-for-TV movies of all time, VALENTINE MAGIC ON LOVE ISLAND (aka "Magic on Love Island") will still hold its own on the lips and in the hearts of junk film junkies of the far-flung future.

If they still have lips and hearts, that is.  And even if they don't, this brain-warp of a movie will make them feel as though their lips are shriveling in disgust as their hearts break from sheer id-curdling incredulity.

A bizarre hybrid of "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island", from a time faraway back when people still flocked to watch those multi-segment, faded-star-packed chunks of 70s-schlock entertainment, this 1980 crapfest belatedly distills the worst of both and throws in the worst of just about everything else it can get its hands on for good measure.

The show's incredibly cloying theme song, nauseatingly crooned by a guy with a fake Jamaican accent, lets us know what we're in for:

Floating like a flower in de sea
Waiting to be found by you and me
Feeding all your needed fantasy
Love Island, Love Island
Your island of love

Not on any map or any chart
Only to be found inside your heart
There to give de love in you a start
Love Island, Love Island
Your island of love

The papaya, tasty pomegran'te
Helps you do de t'ings
The t'ings you t'ink you can't [!]
T'rough de voodoo of de island chant
Love Island, Love Island
Your island of love

In de sun your body wants to play
Urging you to let it have its way
T'row your inhibitions in de quay
Love Island, Love Island
Your island of love

Janis Paige, a facelift or two past her prime, stars as a mysteriously magical matchmaker named Madge who brings unlikely couples together at her tropical island paradise resort.  She's supposed to have supernatural powers, but instead of using them for evil--intentionally, anyway--she's like a gushing, overripe Cupid making love connections between grievously mismatched souls with the help of her two bubbly teenage charges, Dominique Dunne (POLTERGEIST) and Christopher "Peter Brady" Knight.

When things aren't going as love-positive as she'd like, Madge resorts to everything from Tarot cards and crystal balls (so to speak) to whipping up chocolate-dipped roses and other confections that put the love whammy on anyone who eats them.  This is how, heaven help us, she gets Howard Duff romantically interested in Dody Goodman, if you can entertain that thought for more than a few seconds without blacking out.

The awkwardly-staged intro segments for each main character show us who needs a quick love pair-up on Love Island, and why.  Mary Louise Weller (ANIMAL HOUSE's "Mandy Pepperidge") is shown modeling sexy lingerie for pushy photog Stuart Pankin at his smarmiest before rebelling against the horrible grind and insisting upon an island vacation.  As she goes into freeze-frame, Fake Jamaican-Accent Dude returns to hip us to her plight:

Lady wit' de curvy frame
Sometimes she play nervy game
She needs mon, her ways to tame
Who will be de one?

The "mon" in question, horribly enough, just might be none other than Bill Daily of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "The Bob Newhart Show" fame, here playing a clumsy assistant pastor with Coke-bottle glasses who's a big movie buff.  This guy is such a loss that the head church-guy himself suggests he go away--that is, "get" away--to Love Island as quickly as possible.  Bill's inevitable dating-profile-in-song goes like this:

Man who shy, he miss a lot
Don't use half of what he got
Who'll untie his tied-up knot
Who will be de one?

[The last line, in this case, is spoken dramatically for extra romantic emphasis.]

The horror continues with Bob Seagren as an injured pro quarterback who's one sack away from permanent disability ("Mistah wit de muscles so, he has also big ego..."), a cute pre-nose-job Lisa Hartman as a cornfed checkout clerk named "Crystal Kramer" smothered by her clinging mom (Dody again), and Adrienne Barbeau, God love her, as the fed-up mistress of an overbearing business executive (Duff) who flees to you-know-where.  Her lovelorn lame-erick:

Love may not be on her mind
But she seek and she will find
In de plan dat life design
Who will be de one?

Duff hires a private detective to tail Adrienne, and he turns out to be Rick Hurst, who also falls for her, and...I know what you're thinking.  "Adrienne Barbeau and Rick Hurst?  No. Please, please, just...no."  Well, I hate to say it, folks, but yes.  Just yes.  He will be "de one."  (Or...will he?  Hee hee.)  Rick gets his own verse but I couldn't make out the lyrics because they're warbled bad-Supremes style to catch us off-guard.

When we finally make it to Love Island, a ghostly Madge wanders around creeping out the new arrivals with her frozen grin as they get off the boat and start intermingling with all the grace of short-circuiting bumper cars.  This is where the true horror (there's that word again) begins, with each potential love-match seemingly more incongruous and repellent than the last and Madge presiding over it all like a sickly-sweet spectre of schmaltz.

Mary Louise Weller starts the ball rolling by strutting around in a revealing swimsuit and getting upset that people are ogling her body instead of her mind, but ends up making out with horndogger Bob Seagren all over the place while Chris Knight lusts after her from afar.  Yikes.  Weller is apparently allowed to ad-lib some of her dialogue in these scenes.  Not a good idea.

Additional laughs are generated by Bill Daily taking off his glasses to appear more attractive to the opposite sex and mistaking Lisa Hartman for Dody Goodman's 50-year-old sister.  Lisa's upset at first, but after dumping her salad in Bill's lap he sorta starts to turn her on, which is just gross.

Things get weirder when Bill and Bob end up stranded on the other side of the island by themselves, one immobilized by old injuries and the other blind as a bat without his glasses.  Madge, who planned the whole thing to force the two men to work out their differences (and "grow") materializes from out of nowhere like Glinda the Good Witch and heals Bob's knee with a laying on of the hands.  Ohhh-kay...

Much of the "humor" in this part of the movie comes from Dody trying to fix daughter Lisa up with anything in pants, which, unfortunately, includes Rick Hurst.  This leads to Rick dressing in drag at one point in order to avoid Dody.  Watching this scene is like seeing the entire concept of comedy suddenly take a huge dump.
Later, Rick actually hits on Adrienne while he's in full "mom" makeup and muu-muu, and she accepts.  Concept of reality now fully and horribly subverted, thank you very much.

Things hit rock bottom when Rick takes a comedy-relief break to bare his soul to Adrienne with one of those desperate "tears of a clown" speeches that's puppy-dog pathetic.  ("You see, I was always the class clown...the bumbler, the fumbler...girls laughed at me...")  More sensitive viewers may not survive this scene. If you do, you might actually make it to the end of the movie alive.

TV veteran Earl Bellamy, who actually did direct episodes of "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat" among many, many other things, does his best with what he has to work with here, which isn't much.  Meanwhile, the photography often renders even the genuine tropical locations murky and mundane.

Performance-wise, Bob Seagren does his best to murder the art of "acting" but in this crime he has several accomplices.  Even the better actors in the bunch are stymied by ditzy dialogue in a story whose multiple plotlines compete to be the stupidest.  It's telling that the person who seems to fit most comfortably into this frothy concoction of crud is Dody Goodman, playing the dumbest character in the whole movie.

Everything climaxes (I wish) with the big Valentine Costume Ball, where the couples are coupled once and for all.  Naturally, Dody shows up in a ridiculous chicken suit that she made herself.  Rick Hurst, as a wand'ring minstrel or whatever, continues to push the boundaries of unfunny right up till the bitter end.

Naughty Dominique eats one of Madge's special love confections and gets high as a kite, leading me to believe that there's a tad more LSD than "magic" in Madge's recipe.  And just in case everybody's "fun quotient" has yet to be adequately met, Howard Duff shows up.  It's truly a magical evening!  (Ehh...)

As hard as I've tried to describe it, this movie simply defies description.  Although I will say that it's smarmy, cloying, cutesy, banal, schmaltzy, senseless, silly,  dunderheaded, inane, inept, indigestible, and incredibly stupid. The script, the acting, the casting, all technical aspects of the production--everything about it is stunningly, stupefyingly awful.

Without a doubt, VALENTINE MAGIC ON LOVE ISLAND is one of the all-time most horrendously horrible things ever concocted for public viewing. An absolute cringe-inducing joy to watch.  Fascinatingly bad.  I love, adore, and cherish this movie.  I've seen it at least twenty times.

Peter Herro's "WTF!" Wraps in LA, Gore to Come

Peter Herro's WTF! Has Wrapped Production

The Blood Will Flow in 2016

Los Angeles, CA-- Peter Herro and Cthulhu Crush Productions have finished shooting WTF! The horror film, lensed around Los Angeles last month, follows a survivor of a mass killing on a trip with six close friends, when her nightmare threatens to begin again.

Herro directed from a script he co-wrote with Christopher Centanni and Adam Buchalter.  Callie Ott (The Horror), Sarah Agor (Hatchet II, VH1's "Scream Queens"), Andrea Hunt, Ben Norris, Johnny James Fiore, Nick Reilly and Adam Foster starred as the unfortunate group of friends.

Three years ago, twenty-two year old girl-next-door Rachel (Ott) barely survived a brutal massacre that left her friends in pieces. Time has passed, and Rachel has moved on, but unfortunately history has a way of repeating itself.  Her close friends are spending spring break in a secluded house in the woods, and they have cordially invited her to join. Little does she realize that another bloodbath will be showing up as plus one. Once Rachel and her friends arrive at the cabin, the partying, sex, and terror begins.

Director Peter Herro on crafting WTF!:
"It took me a very long time to put together the cast and crew. I spent three months in auditions making sure the actors fit the parts, were up to the challenge, and had the same passion as I did. Equally as important was interviewing crew members to get the right people for the jobs. I am so happy and thrilled for the team I have working on this project. Everyone put in 100% and gave it their all.

It was a very intense 12 day run. Some days we managed to shoot a dozen pages! It definitely is a huge creative test to pull together so much detail in such a short amount of time. With locations all over LA and very long days days it became something that could only be done out of passion. I am thrilled to have put together an entire movie in a 12 day span. This would not be possible without the amazing cast and crew that put there blood and sweat into the project. (no pun intended).

The most challenging obstacle for this shoot were the emotional states the actors had to be in. It goes from a very fun Mean Girls charade into a very serious Scream survival flick. This was challenging for everyone. They would go from having fun and throwing out one-liners to a more serious physiological thriller state of mind. In the end all of the actors pulled off amazing performances and really brought the movie to life!"

WTF! is expected to be released in 2016.

Kyle Zingler produced.  Executive producers are Jody Wheeler and Steve Parker.

The film stars Fran Kranz as Evan Sanders, a low-level, dutiful employee stuck in a boring job at a soul-killing every corporation. Evan’s the kind of guy who does all the work and gets none of the credit, but at least he gets to spend his days with his beautiful co-worker/girlfriend Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick) and his slacker best friend Tim (Joey Kern), so he soldiers on in the hope of one day getting his coveted sales director position.

Unfortunately, it all falls apart in one fell swoop when Amanda breaks up with him and Evan’s boss Ted (Joel Murray) hands his promotion to his college nemesis Max (Pedro Pascal). And it isn’t just their sordid past Evan has to deal with. After his fellow officemates start going through disturbing changes (which, paradoxically, make them better employees) and bodies begin to pile up, Evan learns the horrible truth: Max is a vampire. And even worse… a vamp with a plan.

Evan must find a way to stop the evil brewing amidst the cubicles, expose Max as the bloodsucking bastard that he is, and save his pals before his life and career go from dead-end…to just dead.

SESAME STREET: COUNT ON ELMO -- DVD Review by Porfle

I was already in junior high when "Sesame Street" premiered and started knocking my favorite children's shows such as "Captain Kangaroo" off the air with its up-to-date format and a pace more suited to shorter attention spans.  So I didn't really start watching the show until high school and college, when (1) there were only three or four available channels to watch at any one time and (2) my enjoyment of such things in those days was "enhanced" (nudge nudge, wink wink) by certain other factors.

It helped, of course, that the show was designed so that adults as well as kids could enjoy the kooky humor, celebrity cameos, appealing multi-media vignettes, and general sense of fun.  Catching up with some "Sesame Street" all these years later with Warner Home Video's SESAME STREET: COUNT ON ELMO, I find that despite a few changes here and there the show is pretty much just as much fun to watch as ever.

In this particular adventure, there's a continuing storyline about muppets Elmo, Grover, Cookie Monster, and Abby trying to enter the Count (full name: Count Von Count) into a counting contest without his knowledge by getting him to count things while secretly videotaping it.

The Count, of course, is delighted to count anything, anytime, anywhere.  But the trick, for this inept bunch, is managing to record it on Grover's camera phone.  This leads to several amusing episodes of the Count happily counting all sorts of things (cookies, frog jumps, cheerleading chickens, etc.) while his muppet friends fail in every attempt to record it for posterity.

As a fan of the old Universal horror classics, I've always loved the Count, who is, of course, based on the iconic Bela Lugosi portrayal of Dracula.  I especially like the way lightning flashes, thunder rolls, and creepy organ music plays whenever he finishes counting something and goes into his trademark Lugosi laugh ("Ah ah ah!").

In between these segments there's the usual assortment of live-action and animated bits designed, in this case, to teach kids how to count to twenty.  While the heavy reliance on CGI made me miss the good old days of stop-motion and cel animation, they're all colorful, imaginative, and quite charming in their own way. I was especially pleased to find that one of my old favorites from the 70s, the "Number 12" song, is still being pressed into service.

The main storyline builds to a suspenseful finale when the Count is late for his own award ceremony--which is attended by a who's who of Sesame Street human and muppet characters--and his friends do what they can to keep the judges from disqualifying him, including several of them actually impersonating the Count (badly).  It all serves to teach us not only how to count to twenty, but how friends can help and support each other in times of need.

In addition to this main hour-long feature, there's an episode of "Elmo's World" which lasts about fifteen minutes and focuses on friendship.  This series, airing at the end of the usual "Sesame Street" time slot, is aimed at younger preschoolers and is breezy fun.  Bill Irwin (POPEYE, EIGHT MEN OUT) and Kristin Chenoweth ("The West Wing", "Glee") appear as Elmo's not-too-bright neighbors Mr. Noodle and his sister Miss Noodle.

Last but not least, there's another full-length (50 minutes) feature entitled "Pre-School is Cool: ABC’s With Elmo" which does its best to pound the alphabet into young viewers' heads in a fun way.  Grover guest stars as, believe it or not, a professor teaching an alphabet class with Elmo's help.

Other fun segments include a game show hosted by old favorite Guy Smiley called "Hurry Up!  You're Running Out of Time!" (guest starring Gilbert Gottfried as "The Distractor") and an episode which takes place in the late Mr. Hooper's store and features Seth Green as an alphabet delivery man.

If you find yourself watching this with your kids or your nieces or nephews or whatever, or--if you're like me--you actually watch stuff like this by yourself, all it takes to enjoy SESAME STREET: COUNT ON ELMO is to put yourself in the right mindset.  Preschoolers, of course, live in that mindset, and should eat this up like a bowl of tutti-fruitti ice cream with sprinkles on top.
