Writer, producer, director, DAX PHELAN, “THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND” and “JASMINE” Helms Hitchcokian Thriller "KIRKWOOD"

Writer, producer, and director whose credits include “THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND”and “JASMINE” to helm Hitchcockian thriller to be filmed in St. Louis during the fall and winter of 2019

ST LOUIS (July 25, 2019) -- Los Angeles-based writer/producer/director Dax Phelan (“The Other Side of the Wind”) will return home to St. Louis to direct his sophomore feature film, “Kirkwood,” this fall and winter.

The film is a Hitchcockian suspense thriller about former police detective Joe Dolan and his estranged teenage son, Max, who grow closer as they work together to cover up an accidental murder.  But, when the family of the deceased hires a ruthless private investigator to re-examine the evidence in the case and the investigator begins to suspect the Dolans, Max’s sanity is pushed to the breaking point and Joe must take extreme measures to keep their secret safe.

Phelan wrote the story with his father, Joe Phelan, a former City of St. Louis policeman.

Phelan wrote the screenplay and will produce with Stratton Leopold (“Mission: Impossible III”) and Eric M. Klein (“Jasmine”).

“Although I’ve made films all over the world, I’ve always dreamed of one day coming home to Missouri to make something personal with my family and friends,” Phelan said.  “I’m grateful to the Missouri Film Office, which has been working with me to turn that dream into a reality, and I look forward to teaming up with other local partners.”
In 2015, Phelan wrote, produced, and directed his feature directorial debut, “Jasmine.”  Shot in Hong Kong, the thriller played in 75 film festivals worldwide and won nearly 100 awards, including 17 for Best Picture, 10 for Best Director, and 5 for Best Screenplay.  The film was acquired by Lionsgate and released theatrically on June 16, 2017.

In 2018, Phelan was included in the LA Film Awards’ list of “Thirty Filmmakers to Watch,” a celebration of the “inspiring, creative, and incredibly talented directors who are making indie filmmaking great right now.”

Phelan recently co-produced Orson Welles’s final film, “The Other Side of the Wind,” with Frank Marshall. The film had its world premiere at the 75th Venice Film Festival where it opened to strong reviews and was released theatrically by Netflix on November 2, 2018.  The National Board of Review honored the film with the prestigious and rarely given William K. Everson Film History Award.  It also received the Film Heritage Award from the National Society of Film Critics and appeared on over thirty year-end “Top 10” lists.

Phelan grew up in Kirkwood and is a graduate of Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School.

Dark Star Pictures Acquires all North American Rights To Action-Thriller "THE PREY"

July 23, 2019 (Los Angeles, CA) - Dark Star Pictures has announced today that it has acquired North American rights to action thriller THE PREY. The company is planning an October theatrical release followed by VOD and DVD release.

The film has excited audiences and critics at festivals including: Busan International Film Festival 2018, BFI London Film Festival 2018, Hawaii Film Festival 2018, Night Visions, and most recently Fantasia Film Festival 2019.

Loosely based on Richard Connell's story of survival and adventure The Most Dangerous Game,  THE PREY comes from writer/director Jimmy Henderson and the team behind genre festival hit JAILBREAK.

Undercover Chinese cop Xin (newcomer Gu Shangwei), is on a secret international mission when a surprise raid puts him in a remote Cambodian jungle prison that plays by its own rules. Ruthless warden (Vithaya Pansringarm of ONLY GOD FORGIVES ) sells prisoners as human prey for rich hunters looking for thrills in the jungle.

After years of hunting down ruthless criminals, Xin suddenly finds himself running for his life. If Xin manages to survive this sadistic game, he’ll walk out of the jungle the same way he came in: as a free man. If Xin fails, he’s just another hunting trophy.

Theatrical openings will include Los Angeles, New York, and more to be announced. The deal was negotiated by Dark Star President Michael Repsch and Pip Ngo of XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

“THE PREY is an exceptionally fun, high strung action film that is exhilarating from start to finish” said Repsch. “But what really drew us to the film was the societal context - specifically the look at how class systems can be taken to the extreme, which could not be more relevant in our society today.”

WRITTEN BY: Jimmy Henderson, Michael Hodgson, Kai Miller
CAST: Byron Bishop, Sahajak Boonthanakit, Nophand Boonyai, Vithaya Panringarm (ONLY GOD FORGIVES), Gu Shang Wei

Sappiest Love Song Ever? From "The Cocoanuts" (Marx Brothers, 1929): "When My Dreams Come True" (video)

The Marx Brothers' filmed stage musical "The Cocoanuts" was scored by famed composer Irving Berlin.

Architect Bob Adams (Oscar Shaw) describes the romantic love nest he's designing for himself and sweetheart Polly (Mary Eaton).
Which leads into one of the sappiest love songs ever, "When My Dreams Come True."

"This Spanish castle I've built in my mind..."
"...will be our love nest, the practical kind..."

While Groucho romances Margaret Dumont...
...the song gets reprised throughout the show.

Harpo even has to perform it twice.
(He manages to make it sound good on his harp)

Chico, bless his heart, is mercifully spared.

And, with the Marx Brothers relagated to a brief cutaway...
...the song reappears for the big finish.

Not one of Irving Berlin's finest moments.

THE FATE OF LEE KHAN -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

"Wuxia" is a film genre celebrating the adventures of martial arts heroes in ancient China, one which I liken to tales of the 19th-century American West but with swords instead of six guns and rowdy roadhouse inns instead of saloons.

Chinese film auteur King Hu (A TOUCH OF ZEN) conveys this feeling and more in his engaging action thriller THE FATE OF LEE KHAN, aka "Ying chun ge zhi Fengbo" (Film Movement Classics, 1973), a first-class entry in the genre and one which eschews its sometimes hokier aspects.

The plot can be boiled down to this: Lee Khan (Feng Tian), a ruthless official for the Yuan Dynasty, has acquired the war plans of the Chinese rebel army, which must be recovered by resistance fighters as soon as possible.

These include a group of warrior women posing as waitresses in a remote desert inn which will soon serve as a stopover to Lee Khan during his travels.  Thus, with the help of some male rebels posing as employees and a spy within Khan's ranks, the stage is set for a no-holds-barred confrontation that will include the genre's requisite swordfighting, kickboxing, and other assorted mayhem.

Till then, though, the wait for Lee Khan's entourage to arrive gives us a chance to spend much time in the colorful, lighthearted atmosphere of the Spring Inn, a warm, welcoming location which will dominate the film the same way Joan Crawford's rustic saloon does in the Nicholas Ray classic JOHNNY GUITAR.

We get to absorb some fascinating ancient Chinese culture by watching the antics of eccentric and often boisterous customers interacting with the inn's sassy waitresses or whooping it up at the gambling table.  The cheeky young ladies (including Hong Kong favorite Angela "Lady Whirlwind" Mao) are a joy, as is their no-nonsense mistress, Wan Jen-mi (Li Hua Li), who must keep things together until Lee Khan's impending arrival.

Also of interest are a couple of frantic fight scenes that erupt in the film's first half, one due to an invasion by a gang of thieves that quickly turns against them when the girls go into action.

All the well-choreographed mayhem (coordinated by a young Sammo Hung) seems more explosive within the confines of the inn, with convincing physical action devoid of fake-looking wirework (but plenty of springboard leaps). Most of it is kept to simple non-lethal fun, and the whole thing is enjoyable as, in Quentin Tarantino's parlance, a "hang-out film" wherein the pleasure comes from simply spending time with these people in this setting.

It all changes, of course, when Lee Khan makes his auspicous entrance along with his equally formidable and fearsome sister, Lee Wan-erh (Feng Hsu) and their deadly guards.  The plot to steal the rebel plans away from Khan turns the formerly lighthearted mood dead serious when any wrong move or ill-spoken word can result in instant execution.

Director King Hu wields a sure hand in his eye-pleasing depiction of rural ancient China, which often has the look and feel of an Italian western (especially in its barren exteriors which resemble the wastelands of Spain).  Camerawork is always well-placed but never draws attention to itself.

The engaging story benefits from a very capable cast who handle not only the dramatic aspects but the action as well. While not as consistently kinetic as many wuxia films, this one builds to an extended final battle between the rebels and Lee Khan's forces which should satisfy any fan of the genre, wrapping things up in gripping and sometimes surprising fashion.

The Blu-ray from Film Movement Classics is in 2.35:1 widescreen with 5.1 surround sound and 2.0 stereo.  Mandarin with English subtitles.  Picture and sound quality are fine.  Extras consist of a featurette ("The Fate of King Hu"), trailers for this and other Film Movement Classics releases, and an illustrated booklet with an essay by Stephen Teo.

Devotees of this kind of entertainment are in for a treat with THE FATE OF LEE KHAN, but you don't have to be a wuxia fan to appreciate its winsome charms.  This finely-rendered trip back to a colorful, exotic ancient time may have you yearning to hang out at the Spring Inn again and again.

The Dumbest Shark Scenes In "Jaws: The Revenge" (1987) (video)

In the fourth "Jaws" movie the Brody family is being stalked... a vengeful shark who kills one Brody son...

and then follows the remaining Brodys from New York to the Bahamas.

Chief Brody is now dead (constant fear of sharks gave him a heart attack.)

But wife Ellen and son Michael are still defiantly anti-shark...

...and with Michael Caine's help, they confront the big, roaring monster shark.

Fortunately for bad movie fans, it's all as awful as it sounds.

BLOOD PARADISE -- DVD Review by Porfle

Who'd have thunk it? It turns out Texas doesn't have a monopoly on clans of tightly-wound yokels suffering from too much isolation and a surfeit of plain old down-home "coo-coo."  Which is what novelist Robin Richards discovers when she travels to Sweden for a quiet, secluded farm getaway and ends up right in the middle of BLOOD PARADISE (Artsploitation Films, 2018).

And if you thought that sentence was tortured, just wait'll you see what's in store for Robin (co-writer and co-producer Andréa Winter) after her latest twisted-sex novels drive readers away and her agent suggests she head for the Swedish hills to get her head back together.

It seems farmers are opening their doors to guests who want to escape the city for the pastoral experience and surround themselves with cows, chickens, and, in this particular case, some vaguely not-all-there people like farmer Rolf (Rolf Brunnström), his creepy mute sister, his surly son who likes to carry a sniper rifle around, and Rolf's dead wife who's buried in the garden...or is she?

Even the driver (Christer Cavallius) who picks Robin up at the train station and takes her to Rolf's farm is a weird fellow who's a big, big fan of Robin's books and has "stalker" written all over him.

His name is Hans Bubi (a "Die Hard" reference perhaps?) and he's my favorite character because he's just such a manic oddball (I love his frantic arguments with his jealous, plant-obsessed wife) who I hoped would turn out to be a good guy and not just another member of the creep crowd.

Anyway, with all of that established, BLOOD PARADISE is all set to start keeping us in a state of tense suspense for the rest of its running time. Director Patrick von Barkenberg takes his sweet time letting the story unfold just quickly enough for us to savor every moment of growing unease and mystery as Robin warily observes the actions of her hosts as they grow more suspicious and unsettling.

The film itself is a visual treat, each shot nicely composed with lots of little directorial touches that are oddly satisfying.  Performances never go over the top, and the film is refreshingly devoid of the usual jump scares and musical stings. It isn't even all that gory.

Indeed, what happens to Robin (and some other unfortunate people around her) might've been turned into the same tired old torture porn working itself into a lather trying to "scare" us, but instead we're drawn into an increasingly engrossing scenario that carries us along on a wave of pure, skin-crawling suspense.

The low-key, non-sensationalistic nature of BLOOD PARADISE is one of its most pleasing qualities, along with a bone-dry sense of humor.  We're able to identify with Robin and thus slowly get up inside the story and experience each and every disturbing little pastoral perversion along with her.  And the film itself is so finely-wrought that despite its potent capacity for horror, it's a pleasure to watch.

Hideous Radiation Monster From "Day The World Ended" (Roger Corman, 1955) (video)

Roger Corman's low-budget sci-fi shocker begins with devastating nuclear war...

...and a group of survivors in a mountain hideaway owned by Paul Birch.

Unfortunately, the house is surrounded by radiation mutants...
...of varying degrees of horribleness...

...but the worst is this hideous Paul Blaisdell creation.

It naturally takes an interest in Lori Nelson and Adele Jergens.

While Richard Denning and Mike "Touch" Connors handle the "good guy/bad guy" stuff...
...the wretched beast makes off with lovely Miss Nelson.

Blaisdell wears his own distinctively designed monster suit.
It may not look that great, but it's definitely memorable.

All The Vampira Scenes In "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959) (video)

Vampira (aka Maila Nurmi) was a popular TV horror movie hostess in the 50s.

Filmmaker Ed Wood persuaded her to appear in his magnum opus, "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

She plays "Vampire Girl", an undead woman resurrected by space aliens.

Also in the cast are Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson...
...and a stand-in for the late Bela Lugosi.

The film didn't do much for Vampira's career at the time.

But bad movie fans would rediscover it decades later...
...and elevate it to the status of a revered classic.

Caren Pistorius Snags Starring Role Opposite Academy Award Winner Russell Crowe in Solstice Studios’ "UNHINGED"

Production Starts July 16

LOS ANGELES (July 15, 2019) Caren Pistorius has landed the lead role opposite Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe in Unhinged, the psychological thriller from Solstice Studios, which starts production July 16 in New Orleans.  The film is directed by Derrick Borte (American Dreamer), written by Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia, Red Eye) and produced by Lisa Ellzey (Warrior, Kingdom of Heaven).

Unhinged takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of Rachel (Pistorius), a mother who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy (Crowe). "Road rage" doesn't begin to describe what he's about to do to her and everyone she knows.  Solstice is targeting a third quarter 2020 wide U.S. theatrical release.

Pistorius was most recently seen in Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines and co-starred with Julianne Moore in Gloria Bell.  Prior to that she received critical acclaim starring alongside Michael Fassbender in Slow West.  Pistorius is repped by CAA and RGM in Australia.

“Caren has that magical thing seen in all great actresses, you just believe she’s inhabiting the skin of the character she’s playing.” said Crowe. “Derrick went through a long casting process that culminated in an old school audition with both of us in the room. She claimed that audition in a definitive way. I know she’s been working a long time and has some great credits, but casting Caren still feels like we’ve made a discovery. It’s exciting.”

Solstice Studios is an independent movie company based in Los Angeles, founded in October 2018. The firm develops, fully finances, produces, sells internationally and distributes feature films in the U.S. on a wide-release basis.  Solstice plans to produce 3-5 movies per year for a global audience—generally in the $20-80M budget range.  It also plans to co-finance or acquire another 2-3 films per year for wide US distribution.  The company has a partnership with Ingenious Media.

The Solstice team has a $5 billion production track record and is expected to grow to 65 people in its first year. The company’s founders are: President & CEO Mark Gill, Production Heads Andrew Gunn and Guy Botham, and Marketing/Strategy Head Vincent Bruzzese. The senior team also includes Acquisitions & International Head Crystal Bourbeau; Business & Legal Affairs Head Karen Barna, Chief Financial Officer Shaun Williams, and Physical Production Head Rene Besson.
