Los Angeles, CA - Chad Ferrin's harrowing festival favorite Parasites will be available to rent or own in the US and Canada starting January 24th on iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play, Vudu and Xbox from 108 Media.  Veteran genre director Ferrin (Someone's Knocking at the Door, Horse) presents one long night on Skid Row as a sadistic reimagining on the true story of John Colter and his flight from the Blackfoot Indians.

Since the world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Parasites has made audiences and critics scream, earning rave reviews for being both terrifying and thought-provoking.  Dread Central hailed the film at Fantasia, praising the "white-knuckled tension and action that holds its ground."  Parasites has gone on to screen at a number of festivals, including HorrorHound, Shriekfest, STUFF MX, the New York City Horror Film Festival, Zinema Zombie Fest and more.

Genre vet Robert Miano (Donnie Brasco) headlines as Wilco, the leader of a band of bloodthirsty vagrants who rule the underpasses and alleyways of downtown LA.  When he and his men come across a trio of lost college boys (centered around newcomer Sean Samuels), all hell breaks loose.

Watch the Official Trailer

The industrial barbarianism of downtown Los Angeles is equal parts player and punisher in this survive-at-all-costs tale of a group of friends who get lost in the seedy streets where they encounter a crazed gang of homeless derelicts that captures and maims them one-by-one.  One lucky man escapes on foot, naked and unarmed, with a pack of depraved transients in pursuit, staying only seconds ahead. Clinging to sanity and reduced to helpless prey, with only instinct to guide him, can he survive this coliseum of horror?

In this suspenseful, action-packed, military adventure based on death-defying, real-life events, U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur (Liam Neeson, the Taken trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, Star Wars: Episode I, Batman Begins, Schindler’s List) is appointed head of the United Nations Command at the height of the Korean War.

As the conflict’s darkest days drag on and beleaguered U.S. and South Korean forces become disheartened, MacArthur dispatches eight elite, South Korean military men on a suicide mission code-named Operation Chromite, a covert operation to infiltrate North Korean headquarters far behind enemy lines.

Led by Navy Lieutenant Jang Hak-soo (Lee Jung-jae, Assassination, New World, The Thieves, The Housemaid), the courageous “X-Ray” intelligence unit finds themselves pitted against not only ruthless North Korean commander Lim Gye-jin (Lee Bum-soo, The Divine Move, IRIS: New Generation, The City of Violence) and his men, but the Russian and Chinese troops supporting them.

DOOBIOUS SOURCES -- Movie Review by Porfle

Most people probably think it's more fun to write bad reviews than good ones.  But for me, it's way easier to write a review of a movie that I really like than one about which I can't think of a single good thing to say.

The stoner comedy DOOBIOUS SOURCES (2017) presents just such a dilemma.  Sitting through its amazingly long running time of 102 minutes while trying to glean some worthwhile tidbit here and there is a joyless, almost punitive task.  It's like getting fifty lashes in the public square and thinking, "Well, at least these shoes are comfortable."

Our heroes, Zorn Tappadapo (Jason Weissbrod, NEVER BEEN KISSED) and Reginald "The Reg" Block-Hunsleigh (Jeff Lorch, PICKIN' & GRINNIN'), are a couple of freelance investigative reporters who drive around in their mini-van trying to pull "stings" and sell the footage to the local news.

Their cameras are also constantly trained on each other as they hope to create a documentary about themselves, which allows us ("forces" might be a better word) to experience the entire story "Blair Witch" style.

One of their sting operations involves using a "Gregslist" ad to trick straight men into gay encounters in a motel room, with the latest victim, burly he-man Magnus Martindale (Joe Cortese of AMERICAN HISTORY X and JESSI'S GIRLS as sort of a Tim Thomerson type), striking back at them with a vengeance.

Meanwhile, the boys hook up with a mousey TV reporter, Ky Kittridge (Creagen Dow), to get the goods on some crooked city officials using an RV as their surveillance base.

What follows is a needlessly convoluted series of unfunny situations with lots of screaming, sneaking, running around, and other frantic activity in a vain search for laughter.

I got lost several times trying to follow the reams of dialogue these guys were firing at each other, much of it within the RV and all of it framed in claustrophobic style through a few handheld cameras.

Even the "stoner" aspect seems tacked on--Zorn and Reg light up several joints while driving around or sitting on a stakeout, and they do the usual "sharp inhale, hold, cough" thing a lot, but there's never any real "stoner" humor like you might find in a Cheech and Chong movie.

In fact, the weed angle could be completely purged from the film without changing it a bit, just as long as the two main characters remained yakky, hyperactive jackasses.

As for the actors themselves, I think they all do a pretty good job with what they have to work with.  On a technical level the film is adequate considering that it's simply meant to look like a couple of guys filming each other.

It would've been different if the "sting" aspect of the story had been interesting, or there had been some actual weed-related comedy (besides just puffing a lot of it and then acting stoned), or some funny comedy of any kind.  But unfortunately, DOOBIOUS SOURCES has the dubious distinction of making MAC AND DEVIN GO TO HIGH SCHOOL seem twice as funny in comparison.

Another nice family moves into another spooky old house and encounters yet another restless spirit (or spirits) who may have met a violent end.  Like many an oft-heard song, the notes are the same but it all comes down to how well they're played.

THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM (2016) handles the verses about as well as can be expected; the choruses are so familiar we can practically sing along.  Director D.J. Caruso (DISTURBIA, THE SALTON SEA), a capable craftsman, comes through with a catchy solo now and then.  But ultimately it's the same old song.

We're already in comfortably well-traveled territory when Dana (Kate Beckinsale, UNDERWORLD, VAN HELSING) and David (Mel Raido, CLUBBED, THE INFORMERS) move into a large and very quaint old house that's way off the beaten track, along with young son Lucas (Duncan Joiner).

All of them are still smarting from a horrible family tragedy that's barely even begun healing.  Hardest hit is wife Dana--she's deep in therapy, constantly on meds, and, unfortunately, a little unclear about what's real and what isn't.

So naturally she's the one to discover that the house has its own tower with spiral-staircase access (which Dana, an architect, somehow missed while house-hunting) leading to a hidden room where someone, or something, may have been imprisoned.  And it (or its ghost) may still be there, waiting to get out.

At first, the film takes its time establishing a bucolic mood which will gradually turn dark and sinister for our unsuspecting protagonists. We meet some of the local townspeople who, of course, all seem a bit off to the transplanted city dwellers (the feeling is mutual) and who hint that bad things have happened in that old house.

Dana, it turns out, has the strongest personality of the two, with David being a bit of a wuss.  In fact, when he has to go away to the city for a few days and leave Dana alone in the house, I was thinking it might've been better the other way around.  Still, seeing her resolute (and borderline-bitchy) attitude fall apart in the face of possible madness and delusion makes her mental deterioration all the more effective.

Along the way, director Caruso tries his best to pull some scary stuff on us, including one sequence that's right out of Danny's hallway encounter with the twins in THE SHINING.  But what he mainly manages to do is generate suspense--Dana is often desperately racing to rescue Lucas from some imminent danger and we, seeing much of the story from her point of view, are never quite sure if it's real or imagined.  This keeps us off-balance much of the time, and the tension is strong and well-rendered.

The scary stuff, on the other hand, is pretty weak sauce.  I was glad to see that the film doesn't rely a lot on the loud noises, flashy effects, and "gotcha!" scares that are so prevalent in recent horror films.

But the ghostly elements just aren't that effective--we're interested in how the story plays out, while being in no danger of it scaring us.  Especially when someone as old-shoe comfortable as Gerald McRaney ("Major Dad", "Simon & Simon") turns up as a "scary" ghost.

Beckinsale, now with blonde hair, is easy on the eyes and does an adequate job without really over-exerting her acting muscles.  As husband David, Raido effectively comes across as a bit mousey and not much help to Dana when the ectoplasm hits the fan, which is probably intentional.  Lucas Till (LAID TO REST, ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE) turns up as a young handyman but his part doesn't really go anywhere.

The DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, LLC (TCFHE) is in 2.39:1 widescreen with English Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and subtitles in English and Spanish.  Extras consist of a brief making-of featurette and a trailer.

If you're looking to be scared out of your wits, this'll probably barely manage to raise a single hackle.  But for a darkly suspenseful mystery tale with some nice gothic elements and a knack for keeping the viewer off-guard, THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM should keep you occupied for awhile.

Alex Grossman's SXSW Hit "HICKEY" Gets Jan. LA Theatrical Release, DVD/TVOD Follow Jan. 10

Los Angeles, CA, December 5, 2016— Maxine Street LLC will release Alex Grossman’s teen workplace comedy HICKEY for an LA theatrical run on January 6th followed by a North American DVD/TVOD release from Gravitas Ventures on January 10th.

HICKEY is Grossman’s first feature film and stars Troy Doherty, Flavia Watson, Raychel Diane Weiner (TV’s FLESH AND BONE, BOSCH), Zedrick Restauro, and Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr. (THE FIFTH ELEMENT). Grossman wrote and directed and Lije Sarki produced.

“Making this film and premiering it at SXSW made 2016 a great year for us.” said Grossman, “I’m excited to bring my first feature film to audiences across North America.”

Flavia Watson and Troy Doherty in HICKEY

HICKEY is a day in the life of math whiz and recent high school graduate Ryan Chess (Doherty) who has spent the entire summer dithering over his choice of colleges. On the one hand, he has a full ride to his dream school, MIT but he’s also hopelessly in love with co-worker Carly (Watson), whom he has never asked out. Staying home and attending UCLA would mean he gets to stay close to Carly, but if they’re not even a couple, is it worth it?

To add insult to injury, Cy’s regional manager (and all-around jerk) Brady Krane (Alex Ashbaugh) has ordered the branch to be closed immediately, giving the staff just one day to try and meet their monthly sales quota, setting off a barrage of last-ditch efforts by the colorful crew of Cy’s to save their jobs.

Will they make it? Will Ryan get the girl? “To get the girl he loves, he must save the store he hates.”

THE HARROW -- DVD Review by Porfle

A troubled loner living in an abandoned slaughterhouse in Alabama, haunted by memories of his murdered lover years ago, and possibly going slowly out of his mind among the meathooks and sharp tools...sounds like the makings of a horror flick, but THE HARROW (Breaking Glass Pictures, 2016) just avoids being one and scores instead as a dark, tragic character study with a thriller finish.

From the first moments, we know that writer/director Kevin Stocklin's feature film debut is a sure-handed effort that's going to look great, giving even the potential squalor of the story's settings a picturesque quality.  The cast are up to the job for the most part, with the main leads being especially good.

Tom McKay (WRONG TURN 3: LEFT FOR DEAD) is Miller, a drifter doing temp work on a tobacco farm run by volatile, bullying Uriah (Lars Gerhard) and his beautiful young wife Gale (Maggie Geha, "Gotham").  Miller sees signs that Uriah abuses Gale, with whom he has fallen in love (naturally), and, in trying to help her, gets in way over his head.

Years later, Gale's daughter Ruth (Sonya Harum) shows up at Miller's rustic slaughterhouse abode searching for information about why her mother was brutally murdered by Uriah one fateful night and just how deeply Miller was involved.  This leads to much soul-searching and a painful dredging up of the past that both find shattering in their own way.

Stocklin's script is lean and to the point while allowing plenty of room for the story to unfold in a leisurely and deftly pictorial fashion.  Miller's voiceover about time being a never-ending "now" allows much overlapping of the two timelines, with the past events leading up to Gale's affair with Miller and subsequent murder often merging with his present relationship with Ruth, while we wonder how far and to what degree the latter will eventually go.

Miller repays his landlord by renovating the old building as a historical site and refinishing antique furniture for him. This parallels his thoughts about whether or not a man can make himself over from bad to good and somehow repair the evil he has done.

Eventually, the fact that the much of what happens takes place in a slaughterhouse will contribute to the increasingly morbid tone of the story until we begin to sense a supernatural presence stalking those eerie shadows.

This comes just as past revelations grow more disturbing and what began as a melancholy character study, as well as a bittersweet, tragic romance tale, starts to chill the spine and cause us to inch ever so slowly toward the edge of our seats.

The somewhat twisty ending finally skirts the boundaries of horror-thriller territory, but only just enough to add a suitably suspenseful finish and leave us breathless.

The DVD from Breaking Glass Pictures is in 2.35:1 widescreen with stereo sound and closed captions.  Extras include a festival Q & A, a director's commentary, and two short films from Stocklin as well.

Ultimately, THE HARROW is hardly the splatterfest hinted at by the gore-stained meathook on the poster, but it doesn't have to be.  Well-rendered and effective, it's well worth watching simply as the dark, melancholy, atmospheric thriller that it is.
