The Origin Of Alfalfa's Cowlick In "OUR GANG" (1935)(video)

Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer's "Our Gang" debut was in 1935's "Beginner's Luck."

In this one, his hair is firmly slicked down but good all over.

Although his famous cowlick is first seen in "Teacher's Beau"...

...it wasn't until 1935's "Sprucin' Up" that it was properly introduced.

A drug trafficker arranges a multi-cartel Fentanyl smuggling operation. An architect recovering from an Oxycodone addiction tracks down the truth behind her son’s disappearance. A university professor battles unexpected revelations about his employer, a pharmaceutical company bringing a new “non-addictive” painkiller to market.  Set against the backdrop of the opioid epidemic, their stories collide in this dramatic thriller from writer/director Nicholas Jarecki (“Arbitrage”).

“Nick brought his brilliant script to life in this topical and highly entertaining film,” said Quiver Co-Presidents Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman.  “His look at the international drug war through the prism of profiteers, law enforcement, and all those caught in between is a powerful, thrilling story that we’re proud to bring to audiences.”

“The devastating impact of the opioid epidemic reaches all corners of society,” said Jarecki.  “Each day brings a new revelation about what corporations, traffickers, and governments knew about the madness all along. I’m grateful to our outstanding cast whose nuanced performances put a human face on this urgent problem that needs our attention now.”

"Crisis” is written and directed by Jarecki as the follow up to his critically acclaimed breakout hit, Arbitrage, the highest grossing independent film to be released “day and date” in cinema history, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for its star, Richard Gere.

Producers are Jarecki and Cassian Elwes (Dallas Buyers Club) who financed together through Jarecki’s Green Room Films. Gary Oldman executive produces with Douglas Urbanski. Michael Suppes and Tony Hsieh executive produce along with Mohammed Al Turki, Lisa Wilson, William Rosenfeld, Sam Slater, David Bernon, and Samuel Reich. Co-executive producers are Kean Cronin and Robert Kapp.

The film is a Canadian-Belgian co-production of Les Productions LOD Inc. and Bideford Productions in association with Green Room Films, Tuesday Films, Martingale Films, Flying Horse Productions, Construction Film GmbH, Caviar Film Financing, and Burn Later Productions.

Larry Greenberg negotiated the deal on behalf of Quiver Distribution with the filmmakers.

Quiver Distribution’s slate includes: Viggo Mortensen’s upcoming directorial debut Falling starring Mortensen, Lance Henriksen and Laura Linney; Unjoo Moon’s I Am Woman starring Tilda Cobham Hervey, Danielle Macdonald and Evan Peters; Chick Fight starring Malin Akerman and Bella Thorne; and Becky starring Lulu Wilson and Kevin James.

PORFLE IN: "LIVE FREELY OR DIE HARDLY"

Is "Live Freely Or Die Hardly" Really A Christmas Story? Decide For Yourself!

Here's a couple of things a lot of people don't know about the classic Bruce Willis action flick DIE HARD. One, it really happened. Two, John McClane, the NYPD cop portrayed by Willis in the film, wasn't by himself during this amazing adventure because I, too, was there. That's right--I have totally been cheated out of my rightful place in cool action-movie history by being left out of that stupid movie. So now, at long last, I have decided to set the record straight and recount the thrilling details of my incredible exploits during the great Nakatomi Tower hostage crisis so that the world will have yet another reason to admire me for how awesome I am.

What happened was, I had gotten out of the elevator on the wrong floor during my search for the secret office of a fly-by-night back-alley bikini waxing technician named Wilbur Cranflanflan. I wasn't really interested in getting a bikini wax, but I'd just lost a bet with a friend of mine who insisted that there were only nine Bradys in "The Brady Bunch" (including Alice), while I was certain that there were at least five or six hundred.

I mean, who knew that they reused the same ones for every episode? You don't reuse the same hypodermic needle when you're giving out flu shots, and it seems only logical to me that the safety requirements for proper sterilization should extend to the individual Bradys as well. But apparently Sherwood Schwartz didn't share my concern, so, long story short, I was obliged to get a bikini wax from this Wilbur Cranflanflan, who, despite his silly name, had been highly recommended to me by my personal trainer, Biff.

As it turned out, I was in the wrong building anyway, but I noticed that there was a party under way when the elevator doors opened and, party animal that I was in my reckless youth, I quickly jumped in and started to mingle. People began staring at me right away, which I attributed to both my stunning good looks and the fact that I wasn't wearing any pants due to my impending bikini wax. "Please try to control yourselves, girls," I said modestly. "There's only one of me to go around." Wary of the growing sexual tension roiling within the female inhabitants of my vicinity, I slipped into an office and came face-to-face with Detective John McClane, who was walking around on the carpet barefoot, making fists with his feet. "Fists with your feet," he muttered with amusement.

I held up my right hand in the traditional Apache greeting. "How, Fists With Your Feet," I said. "My name is porfle, but my Native American name is 'Dances Like Jeff Goldblum.' Are you waiting to get a bikini wax, too?"

Suddenly, the sound of gunfire erupted from the main ballroom, followed by piercing screams! When I finally stopped screaming, McClane (as he preferred to be called, I discovered later) grabbed me by the collar and we ducked into a nearby stairwell. "Terrorists!" he cried. "I have to stop them!"

"And I have to find Wilbur Cranflanflan!" I added breathlessly as we ran upstairs to a floor that was still under construction. McClane paced around nervously, trying to decide what to do next, while I gaped in awe at all the cool power tools that were just laying around waiting for me to play with them. There was even an official orange hardhat for me to wear! I barely noticed when McClane picked up a nearby phone and started trying to contact the police, because I was in the process of hefting a massive circular saw that I'd just flicked on and was sawing my way through several stacks of expensive imported lumber along with various items of brand new office furniture.

"CONSTRUCTION WORKER PORFLE ON THE JOB!" I screamed in giddy delight over the ear-splitting din as the air was filled with billowing clouds of sawdust. Momentarily distracted by McClane's frantic attempts to make himself heard over the racket, I sawed my way right through one of those fancy boardroom tables and neatly bisected the telephone. McClane stood there dumfounded as the severed cord dangled from the receiver he was holding to his ear. But before he could thank me or whatever he was going to say, there came the sound of footsteps quickly approaching the room. It was the terrorists!

McClane dived under a table. "DUCK!" he shouted.

"WHERE?" I cried, glancing around. That's just what we needed in a fix like this, I thought--some stupid duck flying around!

At that moment, a huge, blonde German guy with a machine gun leapt into the doorway, his face twisted with rage. I wheeled around in surprise and let go of the circular saw, which flew across the room and landed right on the guy's foot. He barked in pain and started hopping around on his other foot, unleashing a stream of German cuss words that sounded even dirtier than the American ones, while McClane seized the opportunity to run up behind him and hit him over the head with a large potted plant. The German guy fell back against the wall and slid to the floor, the plant still perched decoratively on his head.

A sudden thought struck me. "Omigosh! What if THAT'S Wilbur Cranflanflan?"

McClane glared at me, trying to catch his breath. "Who the hell's Wilbur Cranflanflan?"

"He's the guy that this whole thing is all about!" I shot back, rolling my eyes. Then, while a puzzled McClane processed this information, I began to formulate a plan. We would crawl around in the air ducts and climb up and down the elevator shafts until we found a way to blow up the whole building, and then everything would be okay. I quickly relayed this plan to McClane, who gaped at me in sheer disbelief. I think my cool plan had totally astounded him!

Suddenly, a cruel but snidely sophisticated voice came from behind us. We spun around in unison to find a tall, dapper gent with a Van Dyke beard backed by a gang of vicious-looking henchmen with machine guns. "So," he said to McClane in an oily European accent, "you must be the 'cowboy' who has been running around trying to...how do you say it...'throw a monkey wrench' into my nefarious scheme."

McClane stood up straight and coolly met the man's gaze with an insouciant smirk. "And you," he said slowly, relishing the moment, "must be Wilbur Cranflanflan."

The man's smug look wilted. "No, I'm Hans Gruber," he said uneasily. "Who the hell is Wilbur Cranflanflan?"

"There," I volunteered, pointing to the unconscious guy with the potted plant sticking out of his head. "That's Wilbur Cranflanflan."

"No, he isn't," Gruber frowned. "That's my henchman, Karl."

"Well," I shrugged, "if it isn't you, and it isn't that guy, then it must be one of these other guys." I indicated the henchmen standing behind him. "Okay, which one of you guys is Wilbur Cranflanflan?"

The henchmen glanced around guiltily at one another for a few moments, then turned to Gruber and shrugged. "We're not sure, boss," one of them admitted.

"What do you mean, 'you're not sure'?"

"Well," he said sheepishly, "we don't know what this Cranflanflan guy looks like, and--"

"Okay, wait," Gruber said, waving them off with an impatient look. "I am becoming tired of this game." He pointed at me and McClane. "Kill them both. Now."

They all raised their machine guns. This was it. I had to think fast.

"FOOD FIGHT!!!" I screamed.

In the momentary confusion that settled over the group, I grabbed what appeared to be a picnic lunch bag out of Gruber's hands and began to throw its contents at them. "Yippie-ki-yay, melon farmers!" I cried. Hans Gruber recoiled, eyes wide with terror, as the bag's contents came flying straight toward him.

"MY DETONATORS!" he shrieked.

The explosion took out the entire floor and blasted every window on all four sides of the building to smithereens. Black smoke churned from the gaping blast holes while shattered glass rained down on the street below. The shock wave could be felt for several blocks.

By some insanely unlikely freak of scientific happenstance, I was totally unharmed by the blast. Some physics professors refer to this rare phenomenon as the "Sub-Atomic Shield of Stupidity", while others blame it on an ancient Mayan curse passed down through the ages by living mummies. As for McClane, the explosion blew him into an air duct, which he had to crawl around in for several hours until he finally fell down an elevator shaft.

Hans Gruber and his henchmen, of course, were declared missing and presumed dead--that is, until they turned up a few years later in the small town of Miller's Crotch, South Dakota, delivering singing telegrams in gorilla suits. They all had amnesia and remembered nothing of their former lives save for the mysterious name "Wilbur Cranflanflan", the mere mention of which sent them screaming hysterically up trees and down manholes.

Anyway, you can see how markedly different Hollywood's version of the events is from what really happened. They added a lot of stuff to make it more exciting, but more importantly, they totally ignored my daring and heroic actions during the crisis. The only explanation that I've been able to come up with is that they simply couldn't find anyone great enough to play me in the movie. One good thing did come out of it, though--after miraculously surviving the explosion, I no longer needed that bikini wax.

Kiersey Clemons To Star In Sophie Kargman's Satirical Thriller "SUSIE SEARCHES" From 141 Entertainment

KIERSEY CLEMONS TO STAR IN SOPHIE KARGMAN’S SATIRICAL THRILLER ‘SUSIE SEARCHES’ FROM 141 ENTERTAINMENT

From acclaimed producers of Sundance and Spirit award-winning films ‘Ingrid Goes West’ and ‘Marjorie Prime’

Los Angeles – December 18, 2020: 141 Entertainment today announced their upcoming feature film, dark comedy thriller Susie Searches starring Kiersey Clemons (Antebellum, Hearts Beat Loud, Dope) in the title role. Sophie Kargman (Query) will direct the feature film which she developed with William Day Frank (Hibernation) who penned the script, based on their short film of the same name. Clemons will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

Susie Searches centers on Susie (Clemons), an awkward college student who seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity— and her overlooked true-crime podcast— by solving the disappearance of a classmate. But as her investigation proceeds, we realize that the truth and Susie aren’t at all what they seem... The film is now in development with production due to start in London early next year.

Adam Mirels and Robbie Mirels will produce under their 141 Entertainment banner, with Nicola Smith executive producing. The 141 producing duo has received acclaim for past titles including; Ingrid Goes West starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen, which won Best Screenplay at Sundance; and Marjorie Prime starring Jon Hamm, Geena Davis and Tim Robbins which took the Alfred P Sloan Prize at Sundance. 141 received three Independent Spirit Award nominations and won the prize for Best First Feature. 141 is currently in post-production on the upcoming Ana Lily Amirpour feature, Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon starring Kate Hudson.

                                                   Sophie Kargman

“Kiersey Clemons is such a special talent who continually delivers magnetic performances, so she is dream casting for this unique role,” says Adam and Robert Mirels. “We strive to bring new voices to the screen, so we are delighted to work with Sophie Kargman – an extraordinary storyteller with a fresh vision – on her debut feature.”

"I'm so excited to be working with Sophie Kargman on such a dark and witty film,” says Clemons. “I fell in love with the heart and peculiarity of Susie right away. Stories like this, starring women like me are few and far between. It's a dream to bring her to life alongside our fearless leader Sophie."

Writer/director Kargman sold a true-crime series to eOne and is developing a darkly comedic drama series with Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures. Her award-winning short, Query, starring Justice Smith, Graham Patrick Martin and Armie Hammer, premiered in competition at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and then went on to screen at over two dozen festivals around the world before being acquired by HBO Europe, Canal+ and Movistar+ (Telefonica).

Clemons boasts an impressive slate including starring roles in Disney’s most recent iteration of Lady and the Tramp, Amazon’s The Only Living Boy in New York, and the indie darlings, Dope, Sweetheart and Hearts Beat Loud.  She also appears as “Iris West” in the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.  Clemons most recently executive produced the scripted podcast, Ghost Tape alongside Automatik and QCode and will produce and star in the upcoming AGC feature based on the story of Lauren Simmons.

Clemons is repped by UTA, RANGE, Jackoway Tyerman and ID and Kargman is repped by APA and Christina Campagnola at GRL BND, and Jared Bloch at Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

One fan's cheesy low-budget monster mash is another fan's treasure.  Film Detective has taken a prime example of this, director Richard Cunha's 1958 debut feature GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN, and served both kinds of fans (including those of us who are both) with a crisp, finely-rendered restoration.

Filmed mostly on location in the rugged mountains and forests of southern California, this is the tale of a monstrous Spanish conquistador named Vargas who wakes after being frozen alive in solid rock for centuries and goes on a rampage that leaves ravaged bodies both animal and human in his wake.

Played by 6'6" actor Buddy Baer (FAIR WIND TO JAVA, QUO VADIS, AFRICA SCREAMS), brother of famed boxer Max Baer, the armor-clad behemoth sports a fearsome visage created by former Universal makeup maestro Jack Pierce and swings a deadly battle ax.

While the local sheriff (cowboy star Bob Steele, later to be a regular on the TV classic "F Troop") tries to solve the mysterious murders, archeologist Wayne Brooks (Ed Kemmer, THE SPIDER, "Space Patrol") heads into the wilderness with fellow explorer Dr. Cleveland (Morris Ankrum, ROCKETSHIP X-M, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS) and his beautiful daughter Janet (Sally Fraser, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, IT CONQUERED THE WORLD, THE SPIDER), where their search for ancient relics brings them frighteningly face to face with a live one.

As they inch closer to the truth behind the recent murders, Vargas follows up his killing of more townspeople by setting his sights on Janet.  This will eventually bring every able bodied man in town into the hunt for the monster, who uses his fierce strength and cunning to fight them off. The film climaxes with a furious confrontation between him and the vastly outmatched Brooks.

For fans of low-budget movies, this is a fascinating opportunity to observe Cunha's handling of his meager resources and limited experience (before this, he'd done mainly commercials, industrial films, and the like), and a solid cast composed largely of film veterans doing their best with an often awkward script, to turn in what is a professional-looking effort that entertains despite a slow pace and some dull spots.

Technical aspects are well-handled, with photography and camerawork especially good. Composer Albert Glasser turns in his usual wildly bombastic score. Pierce's makeup mastery creates a monster who resembles a huge stone Golem, with Baer using his wide, glaring eyes to good effect.

The Blu-ray from Film Detective is a 4k transfer from the original camera negative. Bonus features include a commentary track by noted horror/sci-fi film historian and author Tom Weaver which also includes comments by Cunha and others involved in the film. There's also an illustrated booklet with additional information and trivia. Several other features are listed below.

Fans of Cunha's other films such as FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER, SHE DEMONS, and MISSILE TO THE MOON will likely find this relatively modest but nicely-done effort of great interest. While B-grade at best, and only moderately exciting, GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN nevertheless remains one of those minor gems from which appreciative genre fans can derive a special kind of pleasure from watching.

Breaking News: Gravitas Ventures Jan. 15, 2021 Day & Date, Theatrical & TVOD January Release for Psychological Thriller “GOODBYE BUTTERFLY”

Gravitas Ventures Releases Neo Noir Drama “Goodbye, Butterfly” for Day and Date on North American Continent Beginning January 15, 2021

Filmmaker Tyler Wayne’s Gripping ”Goodbye, Butterfly” Sees North American Day & Date Release in Theatres and on VOD/Digital & Blu-Ray/DVD Platforms

Starring Adam Donshik (“House of Cards”) Andy Lauer (“Iron Man 3”) Marie Burke (“The Bobby DeBarge Story), Angela Sauer (“Jane The Virgin”) and Jeremy London (“Mallrats”)

(Los Angeles, CA—December 12, 2020) Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, has acquired the richly nuanced thriller “Goodbye, Butterfly” for a day & date theatrical and TVOD/Digital release across the North American continent beginning on January 15, 2021.

“Goodbye, Butterfly” is a captivating, performance driven psychological thriller and the screenwriting and feature film directorial debut of gifted Asian American filmmaker Tyler Wayne. Shot in a style reminiscent of David Fincher and The Coen Brothers, the film will appeal to much of the same vast audiences who turned “Prisoners,” “Se7en,” and “Mindhunter” into successful cult classics.

The film features a haunting original score by Emmy® Award and ASCAP winning composer Peter Fish, and stars Adam Donshik (“House of Cards,” “Mr. Mercedes”), Andy Lauer (“Iron Man 3,” “Caroline in the City”), Marie Burke (“The Bobby DeBarge Story,” “If Loving You Is Wrong”), Angela Sauer (“Jane The Virgin,” “Master of Sex”), Addison Ross (“Southern Gothic,” “A Very Quarantwinned Christmas”), Jennifer Adams (“Heir of the Witch,” “More than You”), and Jeremy London (“Mallrats,” “Party of Five”).

“A thirst for retributive justice is a base human drive in the face of tragedy. Filmmaker Tyler Wayne has taken this and run with it, creating a taut, morally nuanced thriller that keeps you guessing to the end,” says Megan Huggins of Gravitas Ventures.

Ryan Olsen (Donshik) is a loving family man with the perfect life… until the day his five-year-old daughter is murdered. When the official police investigation hits a dead end, Ryan has a chance encounter with Stan Granger (Lauer ), an oddball neighbor from down the street, and becomes convinced that Stan is the killer. But, after the police ignore his suspicions, Ryan’s obsession with Stan quickly turns violent and, as he takes the law into his own hands, he must ultimately decide how far he’s willing to go in order to find out the truth. Twists and turns will keep audiences at the edge of their seats as they ponder the question: How would you go for justice? After all, when you’ve lost everything, you become capable of anything.

“I hope audiences are drawn to find their own answers to the questions we raise in ‘Goodbye, Butterfly’,” states director Tyler Wayne.

A wild crime thriller about a bag of money left in a sauna and the eight strangers who, spurred by blinding greed, become intricately and dangerously involved with each. A fast-paced Coen-meets-The Grifters tale.

A Luis Vuitton bag stuffed full of cash sends a group of hard-luck lowlifes on a desperate chase for the fortune in this pitch-black neo-noir crime thriller. Fish-mongering gangsters, a greasy cop, an “innocent” gym cleaner, a prostitute, her wife beater of a husband, her ruthless boss and her clueless boyfriend all violently scheme to get their hands on elusive the bag.

First time director Kim Yong-hoon’s witty thriller is a beautifully constructed puzzle that with each double-cross, the pieces fall into place. Starring Jung Woo-sung from Asura: City of Madness and Jeon Do-yeon, award winner in Cannes for her lead role in Secret Sunshine.

Hey, Isn't That Mr. Drysdale? ("THE GREEN HORNET" Serial, 1940)(video)

While watching the 1940 serial "The Green Hornet"...

...we see an actor who looks very familiar.

Isn't that Mr. Drysdale from "The Beverly Hillbillies"?

Sure enough, it is.

Over two decades later, Raymond Bailey would be a television icon.

But here, he's a young, uncredited bit player.

I neither own nor claim any rights to this material.  Just having some fun with it.  Thanks for watching!

The annual Last Drive-In Christmas special has an extra element this year--a continuous live auction to benefit charity, co-hosted by Joe Bob and Darcy the Mail Girl.

Joe Bob and crew are still stranded at an abandoned summer camp in the wilds of New Jersey, but they refuse to give up on Christmas even in the Plague Year of 2020.

The auction will continue for ten days on eBay, and the movies are two of Joe Bob's favorites, so this is a deep dive into drive-in trivia, a flea market of horror memorabilia, and a celebration of serial-killer Santa Clauses that will never be forgotten in Piscataway.
