Vintage Horror Gem The Vampire Bat Debuts HD Restoration
On Special-Edition Blu-ray & DVD, April 25th

All-Star Cast Includes Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Melvyn Douglas & the Immortal Dwight Frye in Macabre, 1933 Tale of Vampire Attacks

ROCKPORT, Mass. — April 1, 2017 — For Immediate Release —The Film Detective, in conjunction with UCLA Film & Television Archive, presents The Vampire Bat like never seen before – digitally mastered from new 35mm film elements preserved by the Archive – flying onto Blu-ray and DVD April 25.

This stylized and macabre tale was directed by Frank R. Strayer, who spins a thrilling tale from Hugo-nominated screenwriter Edward T. Lowe (House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula), that will have you craving more films from the first Golden Age of Horror!

About The Vampire Bat …

When corpses drained of blood begin surfacing in the small European village of Kleines Schloss, town elders suspect a vampire is on the loose, but policeman Karl Brettschneider (Melvyn Douglas, Ninotchka, Hud) doubts the existence of blood-sucking creatures.

Arguing the contrary is mad scientist Dr. Otto von Niemann (Lionel Atwill, Doctor X, Mystery of the Wax Museum), who is caring for the patients—terrifying his lab assistant, Brettschneider’s love interest Ruth Bertin (Fay Wray, King Kong, The Most Dangerous Game).

Amid mass hysteria, fingers point at the village idiot, Herman Gleib (Dwight Frye, Dracula, Frankenstein), who has a creepy affinity for bats.  But after local vigilantes eliminate him from the picture, the killings continue … and Brettschneider tries to keep a cool head as he reluctantly starts searching for supernatural answers.

The Vampire Bat is presented in full screen with an aspect ratio of 1.33 and Dolby Digital sound. Restored from a 35mm composite acetate fine grain master and a 35mm nitrate print, UCLA’s restoration recreates the sensational Gustav Brock color sequence, unacknowledged and unseen since first run.

SPECIAL FEATURES: A Melvyn Douglas featurette with his son, Gregory Hesselberg; and audio commentary by film historian Sam Sherman.

"HEIDI" -- Lavish New Adaptation of the Children's Classic Coming April 4

"A familiar crowd-pleaser is back...young kids will eat this up"
-- The Hollywood Reporter

THIS APRIL, JOIN OMNIBUS ENTERTAINMENT FOR
A LAVISH, AWARD-WINNING ADAPTATION OF
A TIMELESS CLASSIC

HEIDI

An international box office smash, filmed on location in the Swiss Alps, this Dove Foundation "Family Approved" live-action feature based on one of the best-selling children's novels of all time, makes its U.S. debut on DVD and Digital April 4, 2017

DVD AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT WALMART

HEIDI Official Trailer

With more than 50 million copies in print, Swiss author Johanna Spyri's beloved 1880's novel, "Heidi," is one of the all-time classics of children's literature, which has also spawned numerous adaptations - from a 1937 Shirley Temple vehicle and several Japanese anime series to a Hanna-Barbera feature.  This April, Omnibus Entertainment invites families everywhere to head for the hills with HEIDI, a new, lavishly produced adaptation starring Bruno Ganz and marking the big screen debut of Anuk Steffen as the titular Swiss mountain girl.

Orphan girl Heidi spends the happiest days of her childhood with her eccentric grandfather, Alpöhi (Ganz), cut off from the outside world in a simple cabin in the breathtaking Swiss mountains. Together with her friend Peter, she tends to grandfather's goats and enjoys freedom in the mountains to the fullest.  But these carefree times come to an abrupt end when Heidi is whisked to Frankfurt by her Aunt Dete.  The idea is for her to stay with the wealthy Sesemann family and be a playmate for his wheelchair-bound daughter Klara, under the supervision of the strict nanny, Fräulein Rottenmeier.  Although the two girls soon become close friends and Klara's grandmother awakes a passion for books in Heidi while teaching her to read and write, young Heidi's longing for her beloved mountains and her grandfather grows ever stronger.

Spyri originally published "Heidi" as a two-volume novel - "Heidi: Her Years of Wandering and Learning" and "Heidi: How She Used What She Learned" - and, according to the original subtitle, was written "for children and those who love children."  Aside from being translated from the original German into over 50 different languages, HEIDI has also become an enduring figure in children's entertainment through many theater productions; television programs, including one by the BBC and one by Walt Disney; films, including a silent one; a musical play co-written by Neil Simon; a video piece with Paul McCartney and Mike Kelley, and a talking dog version with Angela Lansbury.  There is even a "Heidiland" in eastern Switzerland.

Called "handsomely crafted" (Edmund Lee, South China Morning Post), this most recent adaptation, an international box office smash that has played at top children's film festivals across the U.S., also captured the award for "Best Children's Film" at last year's German Film Awards.  Omnibus Entertainment's DVD features both the original German language version with English subtitles, as well as a dubbed version.

HEIDI (111 minutes) Directed by Alain Gsponer. Starring Bruno Ganz, Anuk Steffen, Isabelle Ottman, Quirin Agrippi, Katharina Schuettler, Hannelore Hoger, Maxim Mehmet, Peter Lohmeyer, Anna Schinz, Jella Haasse.

An Omnibus Entertainment release, distributed by Film Movement.

"DONNIE DARKO" Returns to US Screens March 31st from Arrow Films

Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko Returns to Theaters
Arrow Films Debuts 4K Restoration of Theatrical & Director's Cuts
Weeklong Runs in Los Angeles, New York and More
Writer-Director Richard Kelly Available for Interviews

"Excitingly original indie vision" - Entertainment Weekly

"A mini-masterpiece" - Empire

Los Angeles, CA - Arrow Films has announced the March 31st domestic theatrical debut of the 4K restoration of Richard Kelly's cult hit Donnie Darko. Following a wildly successful re-release in the UK for its fifteenth anniversary, the film will return to theaters in cities across the United States. Fifteen years before "Stranger Things" combined science-fiction, Spielberg-ian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Kelly set the template and the benchmark with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium. The 4K restoration of Donnie Darko will premiere at the Vista in Los Angeles on March 30th, and officially open in Los Angeles at the Cinefamily and in New York at Metrograph on March 31st.

Described by director Richard Kelly as "The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick", Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast: pre-stardom Jake (Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain, Nocturnal Animals) and Maggie Gyllenhaal ("The Honourable Woman", The Dark Knight), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Neon Demon), the late heartthrob Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Ghost), Drew Barrymore (E.T., "Grey Gardens", "Santa Clarita Diet") Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell (Dances With Wolves, Passion Fish, "Battlestar Galactica") and Katharine Ross (The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Stepford Wives), and television favorite Noah Wyle ("ER", "Falling Skies") and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran.

The brand-new 4K restoration was produced by Arrow Films from the original camera negatives and supervised and approved by Kelly and cinematographer Steven Poster. The 4K restoration premiered to a packed audience at the National Film Theatre in London on December 17th, 2016, with an introduction by Richard Kelly. A screening of the Director's Cut followed the next day. The re-release opened nationwide in the UK on December 23rd, eventually grossing £70,000.

Both the theatrical cut and the director's cut are being made available to venues via a partnership with Cartilage Films, and locations will vary.

Donnie Darko will also return for weeklong runs in Denver, Columbus, Cleveland, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Tempe, Tulsa and San Francisco on March 31st, and in El Paso, Portland and Detroit on April 7.

Special screenings include Jacksonville, Austin, Dallas, Honolulu, Lubbock, Baton Rouge, Sioux Falls, Oklahoma City, Tucson, Durham and Stamford throughout March and April.  A full list of screenings is available at Cartilage Films.

March 31st Theatrical Release:
The Cinefamily
611 N Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Metrograph
7 Ludlow St
New York, NY 10002

Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank's maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
With this film, we were interested in telling a story about something that’s been lost — both physically and spiritually. It was intriguing to give Claire a life crisis that leads to a bigger mystery, one that unravels her perception of all she knows to be true. We wanted this experience to be closely observed, and to bring intimacy to every element of the film: the acting, the landscapes, and especially the camerawork.

The world of the Appalachian Ohio college town where the story is set, with its lonely streets and manicured homes, imposing rocky cliffs and dark forests, are all filtered through Claire’s slowly destabilizing mind. Her quest to understand her shifting world after a crisis is a metaphor for universal questions: How do we keep changing throughout our lives? How does our own change and behavior surprise those closest to us, or even ourselves? Can we ever really know anyone? These were the ideas that we explored through the writing and directing of Claire in Motion.

BLOODRUNNERS -- Blu-ray/DVD Review by Porfle

Even if it didn't eventually turn into a vampire movie, BLOODRUNNERS (Speakeasy Pictures, 2017) would still be a pretty nifty period piece about gangsters vs. cops during the wild and woolly days of Prohibition.

Former cinematographer Dan Lantz has gone to great lengths to make his directing debut look like a million dollars even if the budget had to be kept on the down-low.  (I'm using that term wrong but you get the idea.)

From its eye-pleasing production design to its exquisite lighting (about which Lantz goes into great detail in the commentary), this is a candy-coated confection that gives both the gritty world of speakeasies and the dark underworld of vampirism the dazzling veneer of a Warren Magazine color comic.

GOODFELLAS this ain't.  Storywise, Lantz and co-writer Michael McFadden, who plays rumpled veteran cop Jack Malone, keep the action on a breezy/pulpy level even when tommy guns are blasting, fists are breaking bones, and blood is in the air.

It's like a nostalgia-fantasy version of the 30s via the old gangster pictures, with even the green-screen driving sequences made to resemble old-style process shots. (Consequently, some of the gorier elements, such as the discovery of a vampire-ravaged murder victim, seem somewhat more jarring in comparison.)

What's more, the whorehouse run by sassy Madam Rosie (Kerry McGann), Jack's longtime lover, comes off like a sorority house where the girls just happen to get paid for having sex with nice clean-cut gents (including most of the police force).

The film's gorgeous centerpiece set is a speakeasy run by none other than Ice-T as smooth criminal Chesterfield, who--which comes as no surprise--turns out to be the head vampire whose business isn't moonshine but rather high-quality human blood for the discerning undead connoisseur.

Jack comes across as the usual hardbitten "big lug" cop at first, but he has a backstory set in a terrific World War I flashback involving vampirism in the trenches--a novel idea in itself--which ties in nicely with the present storyline and, along with his clumsy semi-romantic scenes with Rosie, makes his character way more sympathetic even when he's using suspects as punching bags.

Another nice touch is the Romeo and Juliet love affair between Rosie's illegitimate daughter Anna (Airen DeLaMater) and Willie (Chris Boylan), a well-meaning lad caught in the tenuous position of working for both Rosie and Chesterfield.  (Which also puts him on the receiving end of Jack's fists.)

Performances are fine, with Peter Patrikios especially fun to watch as Chesterfield's flamboyant human familiar Victor Renfield, who does double duty as operations manager for the speakeasy and coordinator of illicit blood shipments.

One of the film's highlights occurs when the cops interrupt what they think is a moonshine run on a dark country road, only to discover the horrific true nature of the cargo and the trigger men carrying it (resulting in another of the film's enjoyable vamp-outs.)

As an actor, Ice-T is not only born to this sort of role but obviously has a ball playing it, especially when he gets to sprout fangs and go bats on us.

The film itself finally gives us the full "Famous Monsters" treatment when Jack, Willie, and a loony street preacher named Luther (Jack Hoffman), who happens to know a thing or three about fighting vampires, confront the beastly bloodsuckers in their own deadly lair.  The result is sort of a "Dick Tracy vs. Dracula" blow-out that I found invigorating.

The double-disc set from Speakeasy Pictures contains both Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film.  (The Blu-ray has optional subtitles while the DVD does not.)  Extras on both discs consist of a trailer, gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, and a commentary with Lantz and McFadden that entertains while serving as a primer for budding indy filmmakers.

BLOODRUNNERS doesn't have a TITANIC budget, but the sleek look and artistic attention to period detail are a pleasure to behold.  As action/horror, it's like a lighthearted cross between BLADE and THE UNTOUCHABLES--not nearly as intense, but still a vintage carload of good old-fashioned fun.

M. Night Shyamalan's "SPLIT" on Blu-ray/DVD April 18th

M. Night Shyamalan's "SPLIT"

Blu-ray/DVD Release Date: 4/18/2017
Theatrical Studio: Universal

Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan returns to the captivating grip of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs with Split, an original thriller that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured, gifted mind.

Following last year’s breakout hit The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producer Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series, The Gift) for the film.

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others.

Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

For Split, Shyamalan and Blum reassemble their core team from The Visit, the No. 1-grossing horror film of 2015. Their fellow collaborators include producer Marc Bienstock and executive producers Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider.

Olive Films Releases Robert Altman debut, "THE DELINQUENTS", Other Classic March Titles

Olive Films releases Robert Altman's feature directorial debut, "The Delinquents" (1957)

Chicago, IL – Olive Films, a boutique theatrical and home entertainment distribution label dedicated to bringing independent, foreign, and classic films to DVD and Blu-ray, has announced that March 21st will be the Blu-ray debut of five new titles, including Robert Altman’s feature directorial debut, The Delinquents (1957).

“We’re honored to bring this important piece of independent film history to DVD and Blu-ray,” said Alex Kopecky of Olive Films. “Fans can finally appreciate this early effort from the great Robert Altman.”

Making his directorial start in his hometown of Kansas City helming industrial and educational films for the Calvin Company, Hollywood maverick Robert Altman would later find major breakout success with films like MASH (1970) and McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). As pivotal as those films were, Altman’s feature directorial debut, The Delinquents (1957), should not be forgotten.

In addition to introducing the world to Altman’s creative talents, The Delinquents is also notable for bringing two fledgling stars to audiences’ attentions. Richard Bakalyan, appearing in his first role, would later find success in numerous other troubled teen roles and eventually earned acclaim as a character actor in films such as Chinatown (1972) and Von Ryan’s Express (1965). The film also marked the first starring turn for Tom Laughlin (then billed as Tommy Laughlin), who of course went on to portray the iconic Billy Jack in the Billy Jack series.

The Delinquents was truly a low-budget, independent project. Elmer Rhoden Jr., Kansas City theater owner and president of the Commonwealth Theaters chain, noticed the success of the newly emerging teensploitation delinquent genre. Raising a budget of $63,000 with the help of local businesspeople, Rhoden set out to make The Delinquents with Robert Altman. Altman found himself in charge of a huge amount of the creative and producing effort, handling writing, casting, location scouting, and even transporting the equipment.

As he had previously primarily made industrial and educational films for the Calvin Company, he enlisted the crew, including cinematographer Charles Paddock, from his work in that sector. This resourcefulness also emerged when they used nonprofessional locals as actors and friends’ houses and local businesses as filming locations.

A lot of this necessary resourcefulness translated into a final film that foreshadowed what Altman would accomplish with his career decades later.  The realism created by the crew accustomed to working on industrial documentary projects translates in some areas as similar to the improvisational feeling his later films were known for. In fact, for a party scene in The Delinquents, he instructed the extras to simply have a real party, pretending that the film crew wasn’t there. As his crew moved through the house, many of the moments of the party captured in the film are genuine and unscripted, a precursor to his later films’ improvisations.

The on-location shooting and nonprofessional actors also lent The Delinquents a sense of realism, arguably similar to the realism seen in his later films with his signature overlapping dialogue. In many ways, it could be considered the missing link in his career between industrial documentaries and his narrative works in the coming decades.

Olive Films is proud to present The Delinquents on DVD and Blu-ray available March 21st.

THE TROUBLE WITH TERKEL -- DVD Review by Porfle

I remember when computer-generated cartoons a la TOY STORY were a real novelty.  But a million-and-a-half computer-generated cartoons a la TOY STORY later, and they're starting to get a little old.

Still, a CGI toon like Denmark's English-dubbed THE TROUBLE WITH TERKEL (Indican Pictures, 2010) is fun to look at in a Viewmaster sort of way, with its rubbery-looking 3D-ish characters and diorama-like backgrounds.

Movies like this are, if not strictly kid stuff, then usually fairly wholesome and family-oriented.  But the dirty jokes and sexual innuendos of SAUSAGE PARTY changed that (I haven't seen it but the trailer's enough to convey the idea) and now this story of a nerdy sixth grader who runs afoul of a couple of school bullies really goes full-on "Family Guy and The Simpsons Meet Beavis and Butthead."

Here's an idea of the lowbrow humor: Terkel and his friend Jason, one of those zany "white kid who thinks he's black" types, get a substitute sex-ed teacher named Mr. Balsac, whose first name, of course, is "Dick."  He's a pedophile, natch, and he's planning a class field trip to the seaside to see a baby seal clubbing.

Meanwhile, the two bullies, Nigel and Saki, focus their hostilities on Terkel until he proves himself worthy of their respect by driving the class fat girl to suicide.  (Her swan dive from an upstairs window ends with a gory "splat.")

But even then, Terkel continues to receive death threats from an unknown stalker.  Could it possibly be former best pal Jason, who's jealous of Terkel's new friends?

The story is narrated by Marcus, an unctuous Brit who resembles Austin Powers and turns up here and there as various characters, including the kids' hipster music teacher.  Marcus gets the first musical number, a song about how cool he is.

The rest of the tunes that pop up every ten minutes or so run hot and cold.  (Nobody bothered to record a translation of Terkel's rap song so it's in the original Danish.)

As for the humor, there's an awful lot of dirty jokes and profanity packed into the dialogue, which works overtime to be funny but is only occasionally successful at it.

I laughed at Terkel's severely accident-prone little sister Lucy most of all, along with his eternally arguing parents Sheila and Leon whose exchanges consist mostly of the words "yes" and "no" tossed back and forth ad nauseum.  (Sheila sounds a lot like Wanda Sykes for some reason.)  One of the more amusing subplots deals with the fact that Terkel's parents are finally about to get married.

It took me a while to even begin getting into this movie, since it seems eager to get a bunch of the dirty jokes and other crude humor out of its system first (much of it for pure shock value) before finally congealing into a story.

Fortunately, though, the mysterious stalker angle starts to get interesting as do some of the interpersonal relationships between the characters.  There's even an eleventh-hour plot twist that's actually interesting and even a bit suspenseful.

The DVD from Indican Pictures is widescreen with Dolby sound and optional English subtitles.  Extras include deleted scenes, mock screen tests, and a making-of featurette, all in Danish, along with a music video for one of the film's songs and a trailer.

THE TROUBLE WITH TERKEL is the kind of comedy that Mel Brooks might write if he somehow got transformed into a sixth grader again and collaborated with YouTube star Shane Dawson.  If that sounds appealing to you, you'll probably enjoy it.  If it sounds appalling to you, you probably won't.
