Just in time for a nice wintry Friday the 13th here in January of 2017 (actually, I live in East Texas and the temperature's in the 70s) comes the raucous Austrian zombie comedy ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSEN ZOMBIES (2016).
With global warming wrecking the ski industry, a corpulent inventor has created a machine that makes snow and is demonstrating it for a potential investor on a mountaintop in Austria. But the machine is powered by mysterious green goop, and we all know what mysterious green goop does--it mutates things and turns people into zombies. Naturally, Mr. Money Bags gets a faceful of it, and...
Meanwhile, brash young snowboarding champ Steve (Laurie Calvert) has just made a fool of himself during a publicity stunt, which puts him at odds with his manager and sometimes girlfriend Branka (Gabriela Marcinková). I won't describe what happens since the surprise is part of the funny and it's one of the funniest scenes in the movie, but it involves Steve being naked at a very inappropriate time.
Much of the action takes place in the cozy log tavern of big lederhosen-clad hostess Rita (Margarete Tiesel), where, thanks to the original green-goop dude, the first outbreak of zombie-ism takes place and quickly spreads amongst all the skiers and schnapps drinkers huddled inside. At which point the film become your typical Austrian snowboarding zombie comedy.
What I liked best about ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSEN ZOMBIES is that, for the most part, the characters play it straight instead of constantly trying to remind us of how funny and cute everything is. Not only does this add to its deadpan charm, but it also lends some scenes a degree of actual suspense and character empathy.
We begin to care whether or not too-frivolous Steve and too-serious Branka will ever meet halfway and go skiing merrily down the path to love, or if Rita and Steve's jovial friend Josh (Oscar Dyekjær Giese) will escape from being trapped in an attic by zombies even as the wounded Josh begins to turn into one himself. (Rita pours schnapps on the wound--it's her answer to everything.)
Eventually, of course, the whole thing turns into a zombie free-for-all, and that's where the film dives headlong into the kind of gleefully graphic blood and gore that Peter Jackson's early horror films were splattered with. It's a gorehound's delight, with disembowelings, beheadings, and dismemberments wherever you look, along with some sho-nuff meat-grinder action here and there.
Very little of this is laugh-out-loud funny, but it's so earnestly done and pleasantly over-the-top that I didn't mind. I didn't really even care that Steve and Branka's big solution to the zombie attack relies heavily on, well, snowboarding.
In fact, this movie is brimming with impressive snowboarding stunts, if that's your thing. And because of it, I now know that snowboards are our best defense against zombies.
Probably the only really disappointing thing about ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSEN ZOMBIES is the fact that none of the zombies are wearing lederhosen. But in light of its good points, which include terrific cinematography, superb gore and makeup effects, and an overall ambience of fun, I'm willing to let that slide.
We all know what happens when we get caught in the middle of Homeless Hell after dark--all the homeless people who hate us because we're better off than they are go nuts and start coming after us! Anyway, that's what happens in PARASITES (2016) for about an hour and a half.
We're supposed to feel like these three spoiled college brats in their shiny new van--quarterback Marshal (Sean Samuels), pretty boy Josef (Jeffrey Decker), and portly ginger Scott (Sebastian Fernandez)--are sorta asking for it when they cruise through streets lined with makeshift tents and mock their denizens right before a blowout puts them at the mercy of hostile homeless honcho Wilco (Robert Miano) and his violence-prone toadies.
Wilco kills two of them in a fit of psycho-rage that shocks even his cohorts, but Marshal manages to get away. This sets off a prolonged chase sequence that's sort of like THE NAKED PREY meets THE WARRIORS (if the Warriors were only one guy and all the other gangs were just a few homicidal hobos) and another movie whose name I can't remember about some other priveleged people getting stranded in hostile hobo territory after dark.
Naturally, there's a lot of running in PARASITES, much of it taking place in either the Los Angeles river or various alleys and deserted warehouse districts. Several scenes are padded with shots of Marshal jogging down the street while songs like "House of the Rising Sun" play on the soundtrack for several minutes.
Occasionally our hapless hoofer will encounter one of Wilco's guys and they'll have a desperate fight that ends with a bloody impalement or shovel to the skull (although not that much graphic violence is actually shown).
He also meets some colorful characters such as Mona (Silvia Spross), a hooker with a heart of brass, and boisterous bum Wilde, played expansively by none other than George Romero regular Joe Pilato (DAY OF THE DEAD) with long, scraggly grey hair and full beard.
Needless to say there's not a working cell phone in sight, and Marshal might as well be on Mars for all the signs of civilized life he encounters while searching for help.
The story's about as lean as they come, and director Chad Ferrin (THE GHOULS, EASTER BUNNY KILL! KILL!) struggles to keep things interesting enough for us to endure ninety minutes of artless spaz-cam and a cast that tends to emote like they're trying to scare away vampire bats.
As Marshal, Sean Samuels makes a likable enough hero, and Pilato, of course, is a hoot and a howl as Wilde. Robert Miano as Wilco is the closest thing to a well-known actor in the bunch--you'll no doubt recognize his often-seen face from such films as DONNIE BRASCO as well as more obscure titles like CONFESSIONS OF A PIT FIGHTER and THE SYSTEM WITHIN. Here, he gets to ham it up to his heart's content and liven up even his duller scenes.
Whether or not PARASITES holds your interest for its entire running time depends entirely on what kind of mood you happen to be in at the time. It's pretty insubstantial despite a somewhat heavy ending (to tell what movie it calls to mind would be giving it away) and in no danger of being mistaken for a lost John Carpenter flick, but that shouldn't keep most people from enjoying it to a certain degree if they're slumming.

Olive Films continues streak of silent film gems with Blu-ray debut of William S. Hart in Wagon Tracks (1919)
Chicago, IL – Olive Films, a boutique theatrical and home entertainment distribution label dedicated to bringing independent, foreign, and classic films to DVD and Blu-ray, has announced that January 24th will be the release date of six new titles, including the first William S. Hart film to hit Blu-ray, Wagon Tracks (1919).
“William S. Hart was an iconic performer, and it’s hard to believe that he has been missing from Blu-ray collections until now,” said Alex Kopecky of Olive Films. “We’re thrilled to finally fill that void with Wagon Tracks, a classic western from the king of the cowboys.”
The name William S. Hart and the American film western are synonymous. Often called the original screen cowboy, Hart lived the Wild West life that was later immortalized by films, traveling with his father from New York to the frontier in the 1870s. During this time, he spent most of his days with Sioux children of his age as well as the western townspeople archetypes that are now so recognizable: prospectors, outlaws, and saloon owners.
William S. Hart began his career in motion pictures playing Messala in the decidedly un-western 1907 version of Ben Hur. Having starred in a total of seventy-four films, most of them being gritty westerns, the lanky, laconic Hart (whose nickname became Two-Gun Bill) would prove himself a fan favorite playing the outlaw with a heart of gold who is set on a path to good by the film’s end.
Hart retired from making films before the arrival of sound technology, but by then the public had generally moved on to new, younger western cowboys. Upon his death, he donated his home and 265-acre ranch to be turned into a public park and museum, saying “When I was making pictures, the people gave me their nickels, dimes and quarters. When I am gone, I want them to have my home.”
The Olive Films Blu-ray of Wagon Tracks was mastered for home video from an original 35mm nitrate print, which was preserved by the Library of Congress. Dirt, tears, and framing issues have been repaired for optimal viewing pleasure. Now, future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy this newly minted version, which features an original score written and performed by composer Andrew Earle Simpson.

Sometimes you finish watching a movie and think, "Well, that was weird." With WE ARE THE FLESH (2016), you may find yourself saying that after every scene. Maybe even every single thing that happens in every scene.
The premise is simple--a very strange and twisted man named Mariano (Noé Hernández in gleefully-crazed mode) is up to something very strange and twisted in an abandoned building, and when homeless brother and sister Lucio (Diego Gamaliel) and Maria (Maria Evoli) enter the building seeking food and shelter, they enter into Mariano's world. What follows is complete and utter madness.
Mariano's madness is expressed verbally through his incessant wild-eyed philosophizing, which lays bare the inner roilings of his squirming id. Since philosophy and madness can be an unsettling combination, this alone is enough to leave us reeling.
Fueled by endless exuberance and made manifest with a manic industriousness--in which he forces his two unwilling charges to participate--the result is a nightmare of horror and perversion limited only by a wholly unfettered imagination.
What follows is a dizzying cinematic freefall into the most extreme depths of depravity in which such things as incest and necrophilia are only the start. This is filmmaking on a subconscious level, with no limits or boundaries.
The abundant amounts of sex and violence are both graphic and grotesque. In fact, once this film gets cranked up, very little occurs that isn't shockingly, disturbingly grotesque.
Needless to say, this film is not--I repeat, NOT--for everyone.
Eventually I reached a point where I stopped trying to evaluate WE ARE THE FLESH on a technical level--that this is writer-director Emiliano Rocha Minter's first feature film is something of an artistic marvel--and just found myself trying to endure it. Most of it is very hard to get through, and I couldn't wait for several of the scenes to end.
Comparisons to other filmmakers come to mind. I kept being reminded of the work of Spanish surrealist Fernando Arrabal, whose images are similarly outlandish and disturbing, and that of David Lynch during his willfully strange ERASERHEAD days.
The joyful reveling in the grotesque also reminded me of PINK FLAMINGOS-era John Waters, while some of the imagery that's just plain out-there seems like it could've been conceived by a deranged Stanley Kubrick tripping his head off on LSD.
Much of the story takes place within a giant fabricated womb, writhing with naked bodies caked in blood and filth and engaged in acts so degrading as to give even the most jaded viewer second thoughts about whether or not they should even be watching. I began to seriously question if doing so could by any stretch of the imagination be described as "entertainment."
So there you have it. WE ARE THE FLESH, whatever else it may be, is a stunningly effective descent into the underbelly of cinema which, depending on your individual tastes, tolerances, and/or convictions, has the power to either rivet or repel.
As for me personally, I didn't enjoy it, but I don't think I was supposed to. And I'm a little relieved that I didn't.
