LOS ANGELES (November 12, 2020) – Saban Films has acquired US and Canadian rights to Jaume Balagueró’s The Vault [previously Way Down] starring Famke Janssen (X-Men franchise), Sam Riley (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Maleficent), Golden Globe® Nominee Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, “Bates Motel”), Astrid Bergès-Frisbeyfor (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and Liam Cunningham (“Game of Thrones”). Rowan Athale, Michel Gaztambide, Borja Glez. Santaolalla, Andrés M. Koppel and Rafa Martínez penned the action thriller, with Álvaro Augustin, Ghislain Barrois, Freddie Highmore, Eneko Lizarraga and Francisco Sánchez producing. Saban Films will release The Vault in theaters, on demand and digitally January 22nd, 2021.
The Vault follows Thom (Highmore), a genius engineering graduate whose interest is piqued by the Bank of Spain. It’s safe, built over 100 years ago, has no blueprints, and its security system includes an underground river that floods the safe room if breached. After learning that a legendary treasure will be deposited in the bank's safe, Thom masterminds a meticulous plan along with charismatic art dealer Walter (Cunningham) to break into it.

SOLSTICE STUDIOS TAKES WORLDWIDE RIGHTS ON GERARD BUTLER ACTION THRILLER THE PLANE
LOS ANGELES, November 13, 2020 – Solstice Studios has acquired worldwide rights to the elevated action thriller The Plane starring Gerard Butler (Greenland, Angel Has Fallen) and is targeting a June 28, 2021 production start date. The film will be produced by Di Bonaventura Pictures’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, MadRiver Pictures’ Marc Butan, and Butler and Alan Siegel under their G-BASE banner.
This is the first of several projects to come between di Bonaventura and Solstice Studios, who will finance, distribute the film in the U.S. and handle international, including servicing the international distribution deals made by MadRiver International when the project was first announced at AFM 2019.
Based on a story by Charles Cumming and Christian Gudegast, with a script by Charles Cumming, JP Davis and a recently revised draft by James Coyne, The Plane follows commercial airline pilot Ray Torrance (Butler) who heroically lands his storm-damaged aircraft on a remote jungle island in the Philippines, only to find himself stranded in a lawless war zone and the newfound target of ruthless pirates gunning to take the plane and its passengers hostage. As the world searches for the missing aircraft amidst a growing media frenzy, Ray must keep his passengers alive long enough to be found or to find a way out.
The deal was negotiated by Butan, di Bonaventura and Schuyler Moore of Greenberg Glusker with Solstice’s Mark Gill and Karen Barna.
Butler is currently in production on Cop Shop and is fresh off Ric Roman Waugh’s Greenland, which opened successfully abroad and will be released in the US next month. He previously starred in Angel Has Fallen, which was the final installment in the highly successful Olympus Has Fallen trilogy, which Solstice Studios CEO Mark Gill produced.
Solstice’s first film, Unhinged, starring Academy Award Winner Russell Crowe was the first new movie back in US theaters in August and to date is closing in on $43M at the worldwide box office. The studio also recently acquired Joe Bell starring Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg.
Solstice Studios is an independent movie company based in Los Angeles, founded in October 2018. The studio develops, fully finances, produces, sells internationally and distributes feature films in the U.S. on a wide-release basis. Solstice plans to produce 3-5 movies per year for a global audience—generally in the $20-80M budget range. It also plans to co-finance or acquire another 1-2 films per year for wide U.S. distribution. The company has a partnership with Ingenious Media.

LOS ANGELES (November 10, 2020) – Saban Films announced today that they have acquired rights to two titles from Munich-based Constantin Film, including North American and UK rights to Tim Fehlbaum’s epic Tides [previously Haven: Above Sky] starring Nora Arnezeder (“Mozart In The Jungle”), Iain Glen (“Game Of Thrones”), Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (Mary Magdalene), Sope Dirisu (The Huntsman: Winter’s Tale), Sebastian Roché (“The Man In The High Castle”) and Joel Basman (Land Of Mine); and North American rights to Mike P. Nelson’s horror reboot Wrong Turn with Charlotte Vega (The Lodgers), Matthew Modine (“Stranger Things”, 47 Meters Down), Damian Maffei (The Strangers: Prey at Night, Haunt), and Bill Sage (“Hap and Leonard”). Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales on both Constantin Film productions this week out of the AFM, where they will be screening for buyers.
From Executive Producer Roland Emmerich, Tides is set in the near future and follows a female astronaut, shipwrecked on the long-decimated Earth, who must decide the fate of the wasteland's remaining populace. Producers are Thomas Wöbke and Philipp Trauer for BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion, with Ruth Waldburger for Vega Film, and Constanze Guttmann for Constantin Film. Martin Moszkowicz, Christoph Müller and Emmerich are Executive Producers.
Wrong Turn follows a group of friends hiking the Appalachian Trail, who are confronted by 'The Foundation', a community of people who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years. The franchise reboot was written by Alan B. McElroy, the writer of the original film. Robert Kulzer, Constantin Film, in association with James Harris, Tea Shop Productions, produced.

The film is also part of a growing production and development slate at the Academy Award winning studio NEON. Protagonist will launch foreign sales for the horror film at next week’s AFM, where they will be sharing exclusive footage with buyers. NEON has scheduled a 2021 theatrical launch in the US.

Wheatley is an Award Winning British filmmaker and screenwriter who first gained acclaim for his commercials and short films. He is best known for his work in the thriller and horror genres, including the psychological horror films Kill List, Sightseers, Down Terrace, the J. G. Ballard adaptation High-Rise starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans, and the action comedy Free Fire starring Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Brie Larson, and Cillian Murphy for A24. He most recently directed Rebecca for Netflix, starring Lily James and Armie Hammer, and will next be directing The Meg 2 for Warner.
Fry most recently starred in Netflix’s Love Wedding Repeat alongside Sam Claflin, Olivia Munn and Freida Pinto. He will next be seen in Disney’s Cruella starring Emma Stone. Torchia starred in Ari Aster’s Midsommar and AMC’s “The Split.” Squires won Most Promising Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards for her performance in I, Daniel Blake. Shearsmith has won multiple awards for the British psychological horror-thriller “Psychoville” and has previously collaborated with Wheatley in High-Rise and A Field in England.

SYNOPSIS

The sudden appearance of an enemy craft offers the answer, but as the pilot looks for parts to use on her own ship she is horrified to spot another survivor; an enemy alien soldier who has no intention of letting her escape.

Italian horror director Luigi Cozzi wanted to create a tribute to Dario Argento, and in particular Argento's then-unfinished "Three Mothers" trilogy which thus far consisted of SUSPIRIA and INFERNO, when he made the mind-blowing gorefest THE BLACK CAT (Severin Films, 1989).
The fact that the film has nothing to do with either Edgar Allan Poe or black cats (save for the occasional close-up of one) is a good indication of the degree to which Cozzi threw away any semblance of logic or coherence when he re-wrote Argento collaborator Daria Nicolodi's original script to turn it into one of the most feverish, baffling horror films of the 1980s.
The story focuses on actress Anne Ravenna (Florence Guérin) and her director husband Marc (Urbano Barberini), who, along with his co-writer Dan, has envisioned a grand supernatural horror epic based on a medieval witch named Levana (Argento's "Third Mother"), to be played by Anne.
With that basic premise established, Cozzi uses the idea of nightmares within nightmares to keep us guessing whether or not what we're seeing is real.
We see Anne being terrified by nocturnal assaults from the hideous, pus-oozing Levana, and there are numerous alarming instances concerning Anne's baby, his nanny Sara (Luisa Maneri), and various mysterious characters who appear and disappear inside the house (including a seemingly benign spirit named Sybil) but who may or may not be figments of Anne's imagination.
This dreamlike uncertainty gives Cozzi free reign to make the story as wild and unpredictable as he pleases (Cozzi himself has said that this project was his chance to do just the kind of movie he wanted) without worrying about it making any sense or following any restrictive rules of storytelling.
Indeed, we eventually reach a point where trying in vain to follow the plot is forgetten in favor of simply allowing the film's horror, gore, audacious plot twists, and incomprehensible imagery to wash over us in a cheesy, day-glo rush.
All of this is directed in sort of a poor-man's Argento style--the lighting in particular is immediately reminiscent of such films as SUSPIRIA--with elements of the maestro's films included here and there along with a blaring, cringey bad-80s rock score.
Horror goddess Caroline Munro (Cozzi's STARCRASH, MANIAC, CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER) is on hand to give her fans an eyefull as Dan's seductive wife Nora, who may or may not be having an affair with Marc and who may or may not be in league with Levana, who may or may not exist.
The Blu-ray from Severin Films has been transfered in 2K from pristine vault elements for the first time ever. Audio is English mono. Bonus features consist of an interview with Luigi Cozzi and Caroline Munro ("Cat On The Brain") and the film's trailer. The film was originally released in Italy as "Demons 6."
As giddily unhinged as Cozzi's PAGANINI HORROR but with even more freaky, nightmarish imagery (such as evil embryos floating in space via willfully bad SPFX and Levana at her most hideous puking her guts out all over a screaming Anne), THE BLACK CAT flaunts its vintage-cheese production values and revels in being just about the nuttiest Argento tribute (with some Fulci thrown into the mix) that you could ever expect to subject your senses to.
