Los Angeles, CA (FEBRUARY 18, 2020) – The director of global horror-hit ‘The Dead’ and the award-winning, critically acclaimed thriller ‘Never Let Go’, Howard J Ford has taken a spectacular twist in career path to bring his first family film the screen with Adventure Boyz, which will be released by Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios Company, on DigitalHD, Cable VOD, Blu-ray and DVD on February 21 throughout North America.

Inspired by what Howard considers to be the ‘Global Disaster’ of children focusing on device screens rather than engaging in real-life adventures, Adventure Boyz takes audiences on an unforgettable journey with thrills, spills and laughs-a-plenty.

In Adventure Boyz, with his wife away from the family home, ex-motorcycle speedway champ Mike Harris looks forward to being active and having fun outdoors with his two young sons over the summer break. He is stunned that they just want to sit inside playing on their devices. When he encourages them to get out into the real world for exercise and adventure, little does he realize, he is about to set off a chain of events that will change their lives forever.

The boys stumble into the middle of a robbery tied to the nearby castle of a royal family member, and now a notorious crime boss and his bumbling goons are in hot pursuit. The brothers not only lead the thieves, but also the police to the family home where the boys have hidden the stolen loot they discovered.

A race against time ensues, with Dad now a suspect for the crime and Mum on the warpath, it is up to the boys to use all their physical skills to prove who the real thieves are and clear their dad’s name in time for his final speedway race!

Adventure Boyz stars Jon Campling (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Final Fantasy, Predator Dark Ages), Angela Dixon (Never Let Go, Homeless Ashes, Blacksite), Justin Hayward (Monster, 13 Graves), Russell Shaw (Sky Arts, Scummy Man, Election Night) , Glenn Salvage (Essex Heist, Aux, Beyond Fury) and introducing Rory and Felix Ford as the Adventure Boyz.

“Adventure Boyz is not only a fun and compelling story but provides an important message for its young audience: there’s adventure to be had outside beyond the screens of our phones,” said Brett Rogalsky, Acquisitions Coordinator at Gravitas Ventures.

The irony of the fact that Adventure Boyz is destined to be viewed on millions of screens and devices is not lost on Howard.

“The technology and choice available to us – and our kids - nowadays is amazing and I’m not suggesting we ever let it go altogether. I think sometimes parents and children do not even realize how little time the kids actually spend outside, being active and having fun. After watching Adventure Boyz, my dream is that parents and kids feel inspired to then go and do something amazing together, get some air in their lungs, get moving, and not just drift onto the next thing on our screen; it’s all about balance,” said Howard.

Howard was driven to create Adventure Boyz because of his own children, Rory (9) and Felix (7), and their usage of hand-held devices. In keeping with the theme of the movie, making the movie became a family-affair and a real-life adventure for the father and his sons.

Howard asked his sons to list everything they would want to see in a movie. They listed all sorts of things from ‘Outsmarting Criminals’, ‘Motorbike action,’ ‘Finding Treasure,’ ‘BMXing,’ ‘Bullies getting their comeuppance,’ and ‘Getting the girl’! By the next morning, Howard had written a synopsis with all of that, plus more kid-approved plot ideas and lots of action. Then there was nothing he could do other than write the script, direct the film, and cast his sons in the roles they helped create.

“If I were a carpenter, I’d have made them the best tree house I could, but I’m a filmmaker, so what else could I do?” asked Howard.

“On its UK theatrical release, many families came to the cinema two or three times to see Adventure Boyz and parents everywhere seem to be supporting the film’s message and we’re starting to hear reports of families doing more stuff together after seeing the film” said Howard.

“I felt I had to do something urgently to remind my own kids, and perhaps millions of others, that there was more to life than just playing the latest addictive game. It’s been widely reported that children worldwide are falling into ‘device addiction’, with apparently some young people spending up to 10 hours a day on social media! I wanted to encourage and inspire all of us to get outdoors more, exercise and re-connect with each other,” said Howard.

SYNOPSIS
After finding a gruesomely slaughtered farmer’s family just outside Amsterdam, the police call Royal Zoo’s veterinarian, Lizzy for help. She immediately sees what must have caused the bloody mutilations: an enormous, aggressive lion.

Nobody believes her and it isn’t until after a bloodbath at the main park that the authorities agree with her plan to deploy the British hunter, Jack, to catch the killer lion.

However, tensions rise as Lizzy’s boyfriend Dave starts to worry about Lizzy and Jack’s previous romantic relationship getting in the way. But even he must admit that Jack is their best chance to prevent more bloodshed on the city streets.

"Hellfighters" was based on the life of famed oilfield firefighter "Red" Adair.

John Wayne made it after "The Green Berets", co-starring again with Jim Hutton.

Also in the cast were Vera Miles, Katherine Ross, and Bruce Cabot.

Most of the filming took place in and around Houston, Texas.

Critical reception was poor but the film remains a fan favorite.

Los Angeles, CA -- Independent horror filmmaker Chad Ferrin (Parasites, The Ghouls, Someone's Knocking at the Door) has debuted the first photos from his eighth film The Deep Ones, a Lovecraftian take on Rosemary's Baby.  A married couple rents a beachside dream home, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and bizarre occurrences. They soon discover they are in the crosshairs of a mysterious cult and their ancient sea god.

The cast of The Deep Ones includes Johann Urb ("Arrow"), Gina La Piana, Robert Miano, Silvia Spross, Jackie Debatin, Nicolas Coster, Rachel Pringle, Jerry Irons, Robert Rhine, Jon Mack, Bulet Rush, Timothy Muskatell, Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall, Night of the Comet) and Kurt Carley (the Underworld franchise, Roland Emmerich's Godzilla).

Behind the scenes, Ferrin is joined by producers Gina La Piana, Robert Miano and Jeff Olan, composer Richard Band (Re-Animator, From Beyond), director of photography Jeff Billings, makeup effects artist Jim Ojala (Deadgirl, Strange Nature) with key art by Nenad Gucunja.  The Deep Ones is executive produced by Michael Schefano, Richard Pate, Gerry Karr and Zebadiah DeVane.

"H.P. Lovecraft must be smiling down on us," Ferrin shared, "as this has been the most blessed film experience of my 25 years of doing what I love. And I thank the cast and crew from the bottom of my heart for going above and beyond all expectations."

After suffering an untimely loss, Alex (La Piana) and her husband Petri (Urb) visit California for a much-needed break from reality. At an unassuming rental, they meet the mysterious Russell Marsh (Miano). Marsh introduces them to the oddly enthusiastic locals, fixes them a lavish meal and invites them out on his luxury boat. 

Little do they know that beneath Mr. Marsh's thin veneer of avuncular charm lurks a dark devotion to an archaic evil. A wickedly warped twist on the classic Cthulhu mythos, The Deep Ones is what it looks like when Rosemary's Baby undergoes the Innsmouth Transformation.

The Deep Ones will premiere in 2020.

Memories of Murder was released in 2003 and marked the first of Bong Joon Ho and Song Kang Ho's collaborations, and has gone on to be considered one of the most thrilling and haunting crime dramas released this century. NEON recently acquired the rights to the film and will be re-releasing the film in theaters before its home video release.

SABAN FILMS ACQUIRES “CALM WITH HORSES” FROM EXECUTIVE PRODUCER MICHAEL FASSBENDER


LOS ANGELES (February 12, 2020) – Saban Films announced today that they have acquired North American rights to Nick Rowland’s (Ripper Street, Hard Sun) feature film debut Calm With Horses following its premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. 

Starring Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth, Peaky Blinders), Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Killing of a Sacred Deer), BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves, The Virtues) and Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders, Guns Akimbo), the crime drama was written by Joe Murtagh.

Calm With Horses is a DMC Film, Element Pictures production in association with Altitude Film Entertainment; developed and co-financed by Film4 and Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland with the participation of The Western Region Audiovisual Producer’s Fund/WRAP Fund. Daniel Emmerson is producing, with Michael Fassbender and Conor McCaughan serving as executive producers, for DMC.

Further exec producers are Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures (Room, The Favourite), Sam Lavender, Sue Bruce-Smith and Daniel Battsek for Film4, Will Clarke and Mike Runagall for Altitude, Celine Haddad for Screen Ireland, and Sarah Dillon for the WRAP Fund. In darkest rural Ireland, ex-boxer Douglas 'Arm' Armstrong has become the feared enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family, whilst also trying to be a good father to his autistic five-year-old son, Jack. Torn between these two families, Arm's loyalties are truly tested when he is asked to kill for the first time.

As the film begins, Iya, long and slender and towering over everyone—hence the film’s title—works as a nurse in a shell-shocked hospital, presiding over traumatized soldiers. A shocking accident brings them closer and also seals their fates.

The 27-year-old Russian director Kantemir Balagov—whose debut feature Closeness caused a stir at Cannes and the New Directors/New Films festival just last year—won Un Certain Regard’s Best Director prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for this richly burnished, occasionally harrowing rendering of the persistent scars of war.

Los Angeles, CA -- Small Town Monsters has released the first trailer for The Mothman Legacy, the latest from cryptid documentarian Seth Breedlove.  The new trailer gives audiences a glimpse into some of the dark, haunting landscapes captured around West Virginia, along with sound clips from witnesses interviewed for the new film.  The trailer is accompanied by a new one-sheet from acclaimed artist, Christopher Shy (Mandy, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) which gives a haunting look at the titular creature.

The final chapter in Breedlove's Mothman trilogy, The Mothman Legacy will tell the story of dozens of sightings of a folk legend of dubious origin, who allegedly continues to be seen throughout the area today.  With a dozen eyewitness interviews, the film promises to offer some of the most intense and terrifying encounters ever recorded.

Many believe the Mothman to be a 1960's phenomenon, an omen only appearing before tragedy, and disappearing after a flap of sightings and the subsequent Silver Bridge collapse in 1967.  But what if there's more?  What if the origins of this omen trace back much further and go much deeper than anyone realized?  And what if...the sightings never ended?

LOS ANGELES (Feb 5, 2020) - Solstice Studios has acquired Ground Control to Major Tom to be directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Four Christmases) -- and has begun making cast offers.   Solstice Studios will distribute the film in the U.S. and sell the international rights.

Ground Control to Major Tom is the story of an astronaut and a NASA ground control expert who have never met but fall in love over the course of the astronaut’s classified mission to an abandoned space station.

When things go wrong and the astronaut’s ship is destroyed, ground control and the rest of the world presume he’s dead -- until 18 months pass and they receive word he’s alive. Now, the only thing standing between them is a huge expanse of space and a dangerous attempt to get him home.

The screenplay is written by Jason Micallef (who created the Heathers TV series and wrote Butter). The producers are Michael De Luca (Social Network, Moneyball, Captain Phillips) Trevor Engleson and Josh Turner McGuire. Gordon is represented by Phil Raskind at WME, David McIlvaine at Brillstein and attorney Warren Dern; Micallef is represented by Underground and attorney Chad Christopher.

Solstice Studios is an independent movie company based in Los Angeles, founded in October 2018. The studio develops, fully finances, produces, sells internationally and distributes feature films in the U.S. on a wide-release basis.  Solstice plans to produce 3-5 movies per year for a global audience—generally in the $20-80M budget range.  It also plans to co-finance or acquire another 1-2 films per year for wide US distribution.  The company has a partnership with Ingenious Media.

The company’s first theatrical release, will be Unhinged, starring Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe.  Solstice will also start production in April 2020 on Robert Rodriquez’s mind-bending action thriller, Hypnotic, starring Academy Award winner Ben Affleck.

Great 3 Stooges Running Gag: "Morse De-Coders" (video)

STRAIGHT OUTTA TOMPKINS -- DVD Review by Porfle

I always get a vicarious thrill from movies about lifestyles that are interesting to watch but that I wouldn't want to go anywhere near in real life.

This includes such "nice place to visit, wouldn't wanna live there" classics as "Goodfellas", "The Godfather", "Scarface", "Taxi Driver", and other hardboiled horror tales about really bad people doing really bad things.

That's what attracted me to STRAIGHT OUTTA TOMPKINS (Indican Pictures, 2015), an intensely absorbing story about a bright young student named Gene (writer-director Zephyr Benson, son of Robby Benson and Karla DeVito) who, despite being a decent enough sort himself, finds himself sucked into an urban-underbelly nightmare of hard drugs, big money, and really scary people.

Gene gets to this bad place in increments, starting off as a promising athlete (college scouts are already showing up) whose troubled home life steers him into first using and then selling weed.

Great success in this area puts him in contact with big-time drug dealer Cruz (Jon McCormick), who seems deceptively nice at first (despite a proclivity for sudden violence) but gets more ominous the deeper Gene sinks into the morass of really high-level narcotics, both as a paranoid worker drone and an increasingly-addicted user.

Zephyr Benson the writer-director gives his movie a flashback/narration style similar to "Goodfellas" except Gene has a basic decency and naivete' that lend his descent into fear and degradation a much more tragic edge. 

Moreover, he aspires not to be a gangster but a college baseball pitcher, albeit with a very lucrative side income, before this aspect of his life invades and consumes it like an ever-growing virus.  Knowing that he'll eventually get hooked on heroin (as revealed early on in the movie as well as on the DVD's box art) just makes us dread what's to come even more. 

Direction, editing, and overall story progression are excellent and maintain interest throughout every stage of the narrative, with some really beautiful montage sequences.  Benson has a knack for catchy dialogue and narration, seamlessly blending the lighter moments (few as they are) with the darker, scarier stuff.

Benson is also a fine actor, making Gene likable despite his unwise life decisions and character weaknesses (most of which we ascribe to his broken home life and desperation to survive in NYC after being abandoned). 

There's an equally fine supporting cast, including Adonis Rodriguez as Gene's best friend Ivan, who refuses to cross the line with him into hard drugs, and Jon McCormick who is superb as the dangerously unstable Cruz. Whoopi Goldberg shows up for a cameo as Gene's sympathetic landlady, and Troma fans will spot Lloyd Kaufman as a foul-mouthed gym coach.

Sometimes a movie is so good that when the final minutes come, you wish it didn't have to end. I not only enjoyed watching STRAIGHT OUTTA TOMPKINS, but consider myself rather fortunate that I happened to do so.

Great 3 Stooges Running Gag: "This Turkey's Haunted!" (video)

MR. AVERAGE -- DVD Review by Porfle

With some movies, I go from zero anticipation to 100% rapt attention in a matter of minutes because it turns out to be so totally what I didn't expect.

For example: MR. AVERAGE (Indican Pictures, 2006) isn't the goofy comedy I thought it would be from the poster art, but turns out to be an intriguing comedy/drama that had me eagerly watching to see what would happen next.

The basic set-up occurs in the first minutes as likable schlub Kalil (Khalid Maadour) becomes the grand champion of a glitzy game show where you must supply the most average answers (as determined by poll results) to a variety of questions.

Kalil not only proves himself the quintessential Mr. Average, but becomes a popular national icon of ordinary-ness while doing so.

The catch? Now his apartment is full of hidden cameras and his new girlfriend, Claire (Caroline Dhavernas), works for the show, whose producers are testing Kalil's reactions to various products, pop culture notions, etc. and selling the information to whatever interested parties may profit from it.

That alone is dodgy enough, but when the President of France hires Kalil's secret handlers to use Kalil to help win the next election by monitoring his political opinions, even fake-girlfriend Claire starts to worry that the whole sleazy enterprise is getting out of control.

And that's just for starters. Not content to stretch and pad the premise thus far into feature running time, MR. AVERAGE basks in the exploration of every scintillating consequence of Kalil's situation, be it social, political, or romantic (his relationship with Claire gets warped, shattered, and stuck back together wrong).

Not only that, but we get to watch Kalil reclaim control of his life in fascinating ways that not only increase his notoriety many times over but begin to have an even greater influence on not only popular culture but the fabric of society itself.

Through it all, Khalid Maadour plays Kalil with the perfect combination of self-effacing humility and a burgeoning confidence that allows us to root for him whether putting his life back together in profitable ways or clumsily trying to charm his way back into Claire's affection (and as appealingly played by Caroline Dhavernas, we can't blame him).

Director and co-writer Pierre-Paul Renders smartly handles the story's comedic and suspenseful qualities while giving everything a breezily eye-pleasing visual appeal.  The film never bogs down or takes itself too seriously, juggling all its various moods to a tee.

At any juncture during its unpredictable story, MR. AVERAGE could've gone wrong in any number of ways.  Which is why it's so much fun watching it all go so right. It's a film that's just as humble and likable as the protagonist, and its choices are just as spot on.
