LA VIE DE JEAN-MARIE -- DVD Review by Porfle

One must practically achieve a zen state in order to watch LA VIE DE JEAN-MARIE (2015), lest either madness or a deep slumber overwhelm them.  It's a documentary which is very long, and very slow, and in which very little happens, which tends to make me nod off.  If, however, you manage that zen state, you'll likely find it worthwhile.

How much so depends greatly on how interesting you find aging, sweet-natured French priest Jean-Marie, the subject of this in-depth profile. Filmmaker Peter van Houten found him fascinating enough to spend six years filming him going about his life and then lovingly editing the footage into a 166-minute portrait.

Although Jean Marie drives an SUV, he leads a rather spartan existence.  The villages in the French Pyrenees where he tends to the spiritual needs of the people are still infused with a warm sense of community.

Haste is uncommon here.  Life goes on with the same deliberate progression of seasons as the plants in Jean Marie's garden.  He tends both with the same beatific patience and wisdom.

In one scene he ministers to two members of his flock in a solemn, private ceremony that Van Houten films with handheld black-and-white so that it resembles a scene from a Frederick Wiseman documentary.

In another sequence that looks like something out of a colorful adaptation of "Heidi", he visits a woman who's had several abortions so that they can pray for the unborn children's souls to go to Heaven.

Nature, and Jean Marie's place in it, are contemplated at length by Van Houten's dispassionately unobtrusive camera, as are the simple lives of the villagers and their rustic surroundings.

"This was the stable of the mule," Jean-Marie says while showing us around his secluded home place and its grounds.  "Now, there's no mule in it.  But this was it."  The film rambles often, while we content ourselves with gleaning what points of interest there are in it.

At times, however, such as when Jean-Marie wistfully recounts the various loves of his life or gives us a tour of the incomplete country church that he has grown too old to finish, his words are gently compelling.  "I took on too much," he says with a rueful laugh.  "I cannot finish it anymore."

This might refer to his priestly life as well.  The story is at its most interesting, in fact, when we discover what romantic aspirations he has sacrificed, especially when we meet the woman he's currently in love with and who shares with him a platonic companionship that has the local gossips buzzing.

During it all, director Van Houten switches from black-and-white to color at his artistic whim.  Both are eye-pleasing, although his shots are often meandering to the point of inducing drowsiness.

The film ends with a sequence showing what happens when Jean-Marie makes a crucial decision about the remainder of his life, and the consequences of this choice for both himself and his flock.  It's here that LA VIE DE JEAN-MARIE is at its most rewarding, and worth the effort of staying with it to the end.

NOT MY DAY -- Movie Review by Porfle

I thought I was ready for NOT MY DAY, aka "Nicht mein Tag" (2014), but this fast and furious German comedy-action-thriller totally warped all my expectations all to hell and knocked me for a loop.

Bland but likable office drone Till (Alex Stein) is finding his bank job a bit stale, especially when the dreary retirement party of a 40-year veteran fills him with a creeping dread that he's wasting his life.

His personal life isn't all that bad--he's well-off, with an okay wife who's a fashion designer (Anna Maria Mühe) and a cute kid.  He's just on the verge of having one of those middle-age-crazy phases that men in movies have been having ever since the movie MIDDLE AGE CRAZY came out.

Enter Nappo (Moritz Bleibtreu), a dangerous, unscrupulous bounder who, while robbing the bank and taking Till hostage, gives him a taste of adventure that proves irresistible.

Bliebtreu is even more unkempt, criminally impulsive, and funny here than when he played Manni in RUN, LOLA, RUN in 1998.  During their getaway, ample comedy mileage is gained from his frustrated reactions to Till's child-proofed car and Till's extreme nervousness in getting them through a police roadblock and high-speed escape.

They end up at Nappo's hideout in the woods, where, upon getting to know each other better, they turn out to be quite the odd couple.  (Oscar and Felix were never like this.)

Initial personality clashes, due mainly to Nappo's amusingly manic and overbearing nature, gradually give way to a mutual tolerance and even fondness, accented throughout by some keenly funny dialogue and performances.

We pretty much know that they'll end up being good for each other--Nappo will teach Till how to loosen up and get more out of life, while Till's positive example will plant a modicum of decency and humanity in the slightly sociopathic Nappo.  And after the whole harrowing experience, Till will learn to be content with the life he has, etc., etc.

Or not.  First, they have to survive the day, and that's where NOT MY DAY begins to spin wildly out of control, with Till getting sucked deeper into Nappo's perilous existence until he finds himself dodging bullets and running for his life from cops, Albanian gangsters, and whoever else he manages to piss off as he gets back in touch with his long-suppressed wild side.

The rest of the film is uneven in spots but still loads of fun as things start taking unexpected turns in every direction.  It's funny--Moritz Bleibtreu's performance alone is worth the price of admission, especially after he's joined by Jasmin Gerat as Nappo's freaky girlfriend Nadine--but along the way it turns into a combination crime drama, action flick, and road movie that's one of the most nail-biting and offbeat things I've seen in a long time.  There's even a kickass car chase or two.

Before it's over, Till has to risk everything to make things right in his life again as things draw to a genuinely suspenseful climax.  The adventures of Till and Nappo are full of delightful surprises, and, as is only proper in a movie such as NOT MY DAY, they bond over a Black Ford Mustang GT Fastback with yellow racing stripes.  It's a wild ride, and so is this movie.

Opening on VOD Nationwide on Tuesday, July 11 on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Microsoft, Vudu, Comcast, Charter, Cox, Vimeo, and various other cable operators

Saban Films Nabs North American Rights to Taran Killam's "KILLING GUNTHER" Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger

SABAN FILMS NABS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO

TARAN KILLAM’S “KILLING GUNTHER”

STARRING Arnold Schwarzenegger

LOS ANGELES – July 7, 2017 –  Saban Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Taran Killam’s (The Heat, “Saturday Night Live”) Killing Gunther, in which he stars alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger (the Terminator franchise, The Expendables franchise), Bobby Moynihan (Inside Out, Sisters), Hannah Simone (“New Girl”), Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”), Paul Brittain (Hotel Transylvania 2), Amir Talai (What to Expect When You’re Expecting), Aaron Yoo (21, Disturbia), Ryan Gaul (Identity Thief) and Allison Tolman (“Fargo,” “Downward Dog”).

The action comedy is produced by Killam, Kim Leadford, Ash Sarohia and Steve Squillante, executive produced by Schwarzenegger and financed by StarStream Media and Ingenious Media. Saban Films is planning a theatrical release later this year. IMR International is handling the foreign rights.

Killing Gunther tells the story of Gunther (Schwarzenegger), the world's greatest hitman. There are plenty of reasons to want to kill him:  he's arrogant, he's a show-off, and he steals jobs. The assassin community is tired of it. Determined to retire Gunther for good, a group of eccentric killers from across the globe come together to set the perfect trap.  But their master plan quickly turns into a series of embarrassing fails as Gunther always appears one step ahead. The film just wrapped production.

“Taran Killam’s immense talent on both sides of the camera is on full display in his impressive directorial debut,” said Bromiley. “We can’t wait for audiences to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in the type of role that has made him one of the most watchable and reliable stars of all time.”

Killam added, “I am unbelievably grateful to Saban for distributing my directorial debut, and the excitement and support they've shown our film. I particularly applaud their courage in taking a risk on my up-and-coming costar "Schwartzy" as he hates to be called.”

Ness Saban and Bill Bromiley negotiated the deal on behalf of Saban Films with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA.

Saban Films continues to be an active buyer following the acquisition of the Ethan Hawke Action/Thriller 24 Hours to Live out of the Cannes Film Festival.  Recent titles also include Simon West’s Gun Shy starring Antonio Banderas and Olga Kurylenko and John Travolta’s Speed Kills. Upcoming titles for release include: Ric Roman Waugh’s Shot Caller starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lake Bell; Sean Penn’s The Last Face starring Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem; John Stockwell’s Armed Response starring Wesley Snipes and Anne Heche; Alexandros Avranas’ True Crime starring Jim Carrey; and FilmNation’s sci-fi film Kill Switch starring Dan Stevens and Bérénice Marlohe.

GRANNY OF THE DEAD -- Movie Review by Porfle

With all the zombie flicks crawling out of the woodwork and trying to take a bite out of us ever since George Romero assailed us with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD way back in 1968, you'd think the genre would be nothing more than a withered, decaying corpse by now.

But then, every once in a while a movie like GRANNY OF THE DEAD (2017) shambles along to breathe new life into it.

There's not a whole lot of exposition.  We meet a group of fun-loving youths having a reunion in an old church in the hinterlands of Wales, but barely get to know them before they're chased away by an old lady who then seems to get taken over by an unseen force and transformed into a slavering, black-eyed zombie.

Obviously some diabolical curse has descended upon this small Welsh town, because immediately all of its older people begin to get infected as well and morph into some of the most horrific, unstoppable zombies you've ever seen.

Ed (Marcus Carroll), whom we met earlier at the church, wakes up to find his nan coming at him like a deranged spider monkey and hungering for his flesh.  Not only is she extremely frightful-looking, but she seems to have been mainlining Geritol as well.

We're barely ten minutes into GRANNY OF THE DEAD and already the full-scale zombie attack is on.  Barricaded in his room against his living-dead nan, he observes all manner of ghastliness through his window while trying to contact his friends via cell phone.

They, it turns out, all have similar problems with the various flesh-hungry oldsters who are either shambling, lurching around with walkers, or sprinting after them with such vigor that their prey must scramble to stay out of reach.  Some even manage to operate heavy machinery.

The gore is plentiful and the zombie action comes fast and furious.  Things really get going when Ed decides he must escape from his room and confront the zombies head on.  Meanwhile, his friends all have their hands full with touch-and-go situations of their own.

Writer-director Tudley James (SHARKNADO) handles it with a sort of anything-goes style that's consistently interesting, bombarding us with hand-held shots, Dutch angles, jittery camerawork and editing, and whatever else it takes to keep our nerves stretched taut.

These are some ugly zombies, too, and best of all, they're actually scary.  In fact, much of the film consists of nerve-jangling scenes of blood-chilling suspense that should keep you on the edge of your seat despite an undercurrent of mordant satire.

The story is rife with a very dry, deadpan humor that's played absolutely straight (performances are excellent) and doesn't detract at all from the horror effect.  It's dark, dense, with the intertwined currents of morbid humor (I especially loved the JURASSIC PARK reference) and ghastly horror making it all the more effective.

Brimming with all-out gory goodness, GRANNY OF THE DEAD is the real deal for zombie fanatics, a living dead flick that's both exciting and full of genuine shivery scares and apocalyptic atmosphere.  I had a giddy good time watching it.

ALTAR -- Movie Review by Porfle

Do people still compare all these new "found footage" movies to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT?  Or has the genre become so common that hardly anyone even thinks to do that anymore?

At any rate, ALTAR (2016) is the latest example I've seen of a filmmaking style which must be attractive to young, low-budget filmmakers because it allows them to dispense with the usual production values in order to intentionally make their film look like a home movie.

This is either very effective in a raw, visceral, haunting way (as in BLAIR WITCH or another one of my all-time favorites, ATROCIOUS), or merely an affectation that becomes tiresome if not handled well.

ALTAR falls somewhere in between, leaning toward "tiresome" during the first hour when most of it (save for a terrific opening sequence lasting about eight minutes) turns out to be buildup consisting of us watching an SUV full of old college buddies headed into the mountains for some camping but getting lost along the way.

When their SUV overheats and they have to park briefly by the side of the road, there's one unsettling moment when a scary-looking guy with an axe pulls up and behaves in an intimidating manner.  He introduces himself as "Ripper" and we know we'll see him again.

But that won't be for awhile, at least until several more minutes of our not-too-bright protagonists blundering around getting lost and having to set up camp in an unknown part of the wilderness.

They're quite a crew, too: mischievous high school teacher Asher (Tim Parrish) and his ditzy teenaged girlfriend and former student Pam (Ancilla deValmont), independent loner girl Chelsea (Brittany Falardeau), SUV driver Ravi (Deep Rai), and the girl he always had a crush on, Maisy (Stefanie Estes).

Maisy, however, has her mind on her mousey brother Bo (Jesse Parr), a painfully insecure jumble of emotional and behavioral problems whom she hopes will benefit from the social interaction and fun camping experience.

Bo's main method of distancing himself from the world is to keep a camera between it and him, hence the "found footage" angle--he photographs almost literally everything that happens during the outing.

Which, as stated, amounts to not much until finally the group decide to wander off into the dark woods in the middle of the night to "explore" and stumble across a strange altar decorated with glowing blue stones and human skulls.

This is just the beginning of a series of bizarre and eventually lethal encounters between them and whatever malevolent people--or beings--are stalking them through the foreboding forest (and which, in some of the film's best moments, are captured at the edges of Bo's viewfinder just barely visible in the dark).

Upon reaching this point, ALTAR finally takes off and becomes a pretty fun movie to watch.  That is, if you stop expecting any of these characters to behave like normal, rational people.  In fact, it's necessary to let go of any such qualms and simply observe this gaggle of hysterical morons running around the woods like chickens with their heads cut off as the cast engage in some really bad ensemble improv acting.

Once the viewer has adjusted accordingly, the story becomes sort of a fun comedy of errors dotted with bloody murders and a few surprises, getting more frenetic and jarringly improbable as it unfolds and the whole thing rushes headlong toward an all-out "anything goes" finale.

My hopes for ALTAR being a solid, serious horror film began to deflate the more I watched it, but darn if the thing didn't end up getting pumped so full of hot air before it was over that it blew itself right back up again.  It ends not with a bang but with a satisfying "pop", as though we just had a fun horror party and now it's time for ice cream and cake.
