Aging outlaws "The Wild Bunch" reach the end of their trail...
...and decide to go out in a blaze of glory against an entire regiment of Mexican federales.
The script merely called for them to walk to the village plaza where the gun battle would occur.
But director Sam Peckinpah insisted that something much more momentous was called for.
And thus, he created and staged the Wild Bunch's long, final march to their doom.
The martial-sounding drum beat increases the tension and gravitas of the moment.
Peckinpah's long camera lens compresses the distance between figures.
As a prelude to the explosive final sequence, it's a high point in Western cinema.
"Ah, los gringos otra vez..."
