Karloff's Only Mummy Closeup in "The Mummy" (Universal, 1932)

The Mummy, Im-Ho-Tep, is first seen in the background in wide shots.

This is not Boris Karloff, but a full-length dummy.

Not counting the mummification flashback, this closeup is the one time we see Karloff in the actual mummy wrappings.

The closeup continues as Karloff slowly opens his eyes and lowers his arms.
It's the last time we'll see him in the gauze wrappings.
It may, in fact, be the only time he was made up in them.

Filming this closeup and publicity stills may have been done in one day.

For the rest of the film Karloff poses as the mysterious (and unwrapped) Ardeth Bay...
...with an entirely different wardrobe and makeup.

Years later, the "Mummy" sequels would involve a new character, Kharis...
...who remains wrapped from beginning to end.

I neither own nor claim any rights to this material.  Just having some fun with it.  Thanks for watching!
