WASHINGTON (December 9, 2015) – ASTEROID: MISSION EXTREME, a new digital fulldome adventure from National Geographic Studios and Sky-Skan, features narration by actress Sigourney Weaver. Open now in fulldome theaters worldwide as of fall 2015, the film is coming to digital 2D, 3D and flat screen cinemas in early 2016. ASTEROID: MISSION EXTREME takes audiences on an epic journey to explore what it would take for astronauts to harness asteroids and facilitate exploration into deep space.
“Sigourney Weaver is the ideal guide for this immersive trek across our Solar System, which spotlights the wonders and possibilities of science and will inspire a new generation of space explorers,” said Jeff Hasler, EVP, Production and Development at National Geographic Studios.
“There is little content in the world that matches the quality offered by this unique film experience, using 8k resolution at 60 frames per second,” said Steven Savage, Sky-Skan president.
Using stunning visuals and state-of-the-art computer graphics, ASTEROID: MISSION EXTREME hurtles audiences through space on an extraordinary adventure with astronauts to discover the possibilities of using asteroids as stepping stones to connect with other worlds. Based on real science, the film presents the fascinating idea and unique challenges of asteroids as “way stations” to facilitate manned space travel, and also explores various ways to prevent asteroids from hitting the Earth.
An original co-production of National Geographic Studios and Sky-Skan, ASTEROID: MISSION EXTREME is presented by Lockheed Martin. Produced and directed by Annette Sotheran-Barnett (To Space & Back), the film is written by Sotheran-Barnett, Mose Richards and Rick Adams. Executive producers are Jeff Hasler, Brooke Runnette, and Steven Savage.
