HIGH ON THE HOG -- Movie Review by Porfle
In one of his final films before leaving us in 2019, cult favorite Sid Haig plays Big Daddy, a professional weed farmer whose sprawling pot plantation is infiltrated by an ambitious young female undercover cop who becomes one of his harem of lovely farm hands in the seriously unhinged thriller HIGH ON THE HOG (2019).
This is against the wishes of her superior, the pushy and perpetually plastered Agent Dick (Joe Estevez, CAESAR AND OTTO'S SUMMER CAMP MASSACRE), who feels her too inexperienced for such a mission but would love to get Big Daddy and his "family" in his sights or at least send them all to the slammer no matter what it takes.
Meanwhile, a virulent new strain of weed has hit town that has those who smoke it going on pleasantly cinematic homocidal rampages and generally acting like gibbering maniacs.
Haig (JASON OF STAR COMMAND, CYNTHIA, MIMESIS) settles into the role of Big Daddy with a long-practiced ease and makes us root for him despite the fact that his easygoing fascade hides a very dangerous inner being. Estevez (who is, incidentally, Martin Sheen's brother) has a field day in the role of Agent Dick and the more outrageous his violent, drunken cop character becomes, the more I was rooting for him as well.
There's plenty of drama with Dick clashing with his female boss in addition to informers and various perps, not to mention the very imposing Robert Z'Dar as a smalltown mayor who aids and abets Big Daddy. Add to this the female undercover cop's increasingly dangerous mission, Big Daddy's bloodthirsty bodyguard, and lots of violence including a climactic gun battle.
Mostly, however, prolific filmmaker Tony Wash (SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET, IT'S MY PARTY AND I'LL DIE IF I WANT TO) uses this simple plot as a means to indulge himself in some of the wildest stream-of-consciousness filmmaking I've ever seen.
It's as though he watched NATURAL BORN KILLERS and PLANET TERROR before dropping acid and then filming whatever came blasting out of his thoroughly blown mind.
Indeed, the grindhouse look of PLANET TERROR and the mish-mash of film styles and elements that made NATURAL BORN KILLERS such an unpredictable visual patchwork seem almost reserved in comparison to Wash's turning the dial up to eleven and beyond.
The result is a constantly dazzling party for the eyes and mind in which the story of blustery Agent Dick and the imperiled undercover cop's dogged efforts to bust Big Daddy's operation is splattered with superimposed cinematic frou-frou.
This includes scratches and aging effects, film leaders, "scene missing" tags, overexposed film, live-action characters turning into stop-motion figures, and almost literally everything else that could be thrown into the mix.
Many will consider this a superficial and overly self-indulgent attempt to make an average story seem more interesting and entertaining to watch, and perhaps it is. But if that's the case, then, for me at least, it worked. And one thing's for sure--the people who put HIGH ON THE HOG together clearly had a ball doing it.

A Girl And Her Turtle ("SNUFF", 1976) (video)
In 1976, a cheap exploitation flick lensed in Argentina...
...by husband and wife filmmakers Michael and Roberta Findlay...
...was purchased by producer and distributor Allan Shackleton.
He added a sequence of graphic violence at the end and repackaged it as an actual "snuff" film.
But despite the controversy over this aspect of "Snuff", perhaps the most effective scene in the entire film...
...is the one which shows the heartwarming love between a troubled young farm girl and her turtle.

A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish
Brimming with overtones from the classic fairytale, this contemporary musical follows Katherine “Kat” Decker dreaming of becoming a famous singer-songwriter. Her reality, however, is suffocated by her conniving and cruel stepfamily and a demoralizing job working as a singing elf at billionaire Terrence Wintergarden’s Santa Land. When she starts to fall for Nick, the handsome new Santa at the tree lot, things begin to look up. Unfortunately, when her stepmother and stepsisters realize Kat has been invited to the prestigious Wintergarden Christmas Gala, they’ll stop at nothing to procure their own invitation and keep Kat from attending. With the help of her attentive dog, a true friend, and a little bit of holiday magic, Kat may just make it to the gala, discover the true identity of Nick, and experience the true meaning of Christmas.
The enchanting original movie stars Laura Marano (Disney’s Austin and Ally) as Kat Decker, Gregg Sulkin (Marvel’s Runaways, Faking It, Wizards of Waverly Place) as Dominic Wintergarden, Barclay Hope (Riverdale) as Terrence Wintergarden, three-time Leo® Award winner and Hallmark Channel favorite Johannah Newmarch (When Calls The Heart, Garage Sale Mystery franchise) as the cruel stepmother Deirdra Decker, Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time) as Kat’s best friend Isla, and evil-stepsisters Joy and Grace are played, respectively, by Lillian Doucet-Roche (The Miracle Season) and Chanelle Peloso (Syfy’s Deadly Class). This is the fifth installment in the A Cinderella Story movie series, and first one with a Christmas theme. Other titles include A Cinderella Story (Hilary Duff), Another Cinderella Story (Selena Gomez), A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song (Lucy Hale) and A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits (Sofia Carson).
Please check out above clip from the bonus content featurette titled “The Mic & The Stage, “ and get a glimpse into the production of this heartwarming musical as you go behind the scenes with Laura Marano and Director/Writer Michelle Johnston to see how the magic was created!

Other Holiday Titles To Consider:
Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love
Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors - Circle of Love continues with the story of young Dolly Parton as the Parton Family experiences a true Christmas miracle drawing the Partons closer together than ever - with deepened faith and love for one another. The film delivers Christmas joy and peril as an unexpected blizzard threatens the Parton family while Dolly’s father (and his kids) make sacrifices to raise enough money to finally buy his loving wife the wedding ring he could never afford. Meanwhile, an important person in little Dolly’s life begins to see that her amazing voice and musical gift might just be made for something bigger than rural Tennessee.
Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas
Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas tells the story of Buddy the elf, and his quest to reunite with the human father he never knew existed. While Buddy's sincerity and idealism are commonplace at the North Pole, these attributes are rejected in cynical New York City. But through song, dance, and relentless good cheer, Buddy rekindles the spirit of Christmas for the entire city. This stop-motion animated holiday musical movie combines the humor and spirit of the beloved holiday film Elf with songs from the Broadway hit Elf: The Musical to create an all-new retelling of Buddy’s delightfully absurd yet heartwarming story.
Teen Titans Go! Holiday Collection

So get ready for pizza parties and pranks as the teens totally annoy one other, in between fighting crime. Unless there’s something good on TV….
A Charlie Brown Christmas
In this Emmy® and Peabody Award winning classic, Charlie Brown is upset by how commercial the Christmas holiday has become. To coax him out of his holiday blues, Lucy suggests he direct the school’s Christmas pageant and decorate a glorious tree. Charlie Brown concedes. The tree he finds however, is puny, prompting everyone to ridicule him.
A Christmas Story Live!
A live musical event inspired by the perennial holiday movie favorite and the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical production, A CHRISTMAS STORY LIVE! follows nine-year-old Ralphie Parker, who dreams of finding a genuine Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun under the tree on Christmas morning. The over-two-hour TV movie stars Maya Rudolph, Matthew Broderick, Jane Krakowski, Chris Diamantopoulos, Ana Gasteyer and talented newcomer Andy Walken as Ralphie. This winter-wonderful extravaganza features stunning choreography on massive sets and family-friendly songs with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, lyricists of La La Land’s Academy Award®-winning* song, “City of Stars.” Get ready to sing and dance along to your new favorite holiday tradition!
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Magnificently narrated by Boris Karloff (Frankenstein, The Mummy) and directed by animation genius and cartoon legend Chuck Jones (Looney Tunes, What's Opera, Doc?), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! tells the story of the miserable Grinch, who wants to sabotage Christmas for all the Whos in Who-ville. The Grinch thinks that by stealing the Whos Christmas trees and presents, he’ll succeed in stealing their joy. However, when Christmas morning arrives, the Grinch is taken by surprise when he notices the Whos greet the day joyously singing Christmas carols regardless of the fact that their village has been completely stripped of holiday gifts, decorations and treats. The cheerful attitude of the Whos prompts the Grinch to ponder the true meaning of Christmas and he slowly comes to realize the spirit of the season is not generated by material possessions. Will the Grinch have a change of heart and consider returning the Whos’ Christmas gifts?
Tom & Jerry Nutcracker Tale

SABAN FILMS ACQUIRES TRIBECA THRILLER “DON’T TELL A SOUL” WITH RAINN WILSON, MENA SUVARI, JACK DYLAN GRAZER AND FIONN WHITEHEAD
LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2020) – Saban Films announced today that they have acquired North American rights to Alex McAulay’s (Flower) directorial debut Don’t Tell a Soul from Unbridled Films and Mangano Movies & Media.
Penned by McAulay, the thriller was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and stars Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam!, It), Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk, The Children Act), Mena Suvari (American Beauty, American Pie franchise) and Emmy Award® nominated Rainn Wilson (“The Office,” The Meg). Producer Merry-Kay Poe stated, “It was a true pleasure to work with such a great cast and production team. Alex’s masterful script showcases four great actors each in a new dimension, which is very exciting to watch. Solstice Studios To Debut "UNHINGED" Starring Russell Crowe In Theaters July 1st -- Watch the Trailer HERE!
AMERICA’S MOVIE THEATERS HAVE THEIR FIRST NEW FILM, "UNHINGED" OPENING JULY 1ST
Thriller starring Russell Crowe to open safely in accordance with state public health department safety guidelines
Response to new poll showing 80% of Americans want to go out to the movies in July
LOS ANGELES (May 12, 2020) -- America’s movie theaters will show their first new film on July 1st, Unhinged, a thriller starring Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe.
The move comes in response to a new poll that shows more than 80% of Americans want to go out to the movies in July.
The U.S. release of “Unhinged” will follow or coincide with theater openings in nations around the globe, including Australia, China, The Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan—with a number of additional countries likely to announce openings in late June or July.
WATCH THE TRAILER:
Theater plans to open safely across the United States will comply with all state public health department guidelines and are expected to include such measures as socially distant seating (capacities of 25-50%), staggered show times to reduce crowding, and more time between each show to allow for increased cleaning.
“We made this decision after extensive consultation with the National Association of Theater Owners and leading theater chains,” said Mark Gill, President and CEO of Solstice Studios, which produced and will release the film in the U.S. “Those conversations have convinced us there is a way to meet pent up demand for the theatrical experience safely.”
Unhinged is a psychological thriller starring Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe from Carl Ellsworth, the writer of Red Eye and Disturbia and Lisa Ellzey, the producer of Warrior and Kingdom of Heaven. It takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of a mother who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy.
"Road rage" doesn't begin to describe what he's about to do to her and everyone she knows. The film is directed by Derrick Borte (American Dreamer) and also stars Caren Pistorius, Gabriel Bateman, Jimmi Simpson and Austin P. McKenzie.

Many great screen comics often acknowledge the presence of us, the viewers...
...by looking right at us and sometimes even talking to us.
Laurel and Hardy did it all the time, and so did Lou Costello.
And, of course, the Three Stooges knew we were out there watching, too!

"AMONG US": What To Watch Today? Seen The Declassified Pentagon Footage of the Alien Spaceship?
Have you caught the UFO videos the Pentagon just declassified? If you did - this documentary is for you.
On April 27, the Pentagon released videos declassified by the US Navy. The footage, captured by U.S. Navy pilots, shows "wingless aircraft traveling at hypersonic speeds, with no visible means of propulsion," shared LiveScience.com.
While Military.com goes on to share, "In releasing the videos, the U.S. Navy officially acknowledges that its pilots encountered so-called unidentified aerial phenomena."
AMONG US, a new documentary released by Vision Films, adds to the argument - humans are not alone on planet earth; alien life forms are (already) AMONG US.
Filmmaker Caroline Cory documents the jaw-dropping accounts of extraterrestrial encounters around the world and provides ground-breaking, scientific evidence of these other-worldly interactions, leaving the compelling question open - what will the influence of non-human beings be on our DNA?

When Myriam decides to go back to work despite her husband’s initial reluctance, the couple starts looking for a nanny. After a very selective process, they finally find the perfect candidate, Louise, a poised 40-year old woman who is an instant hit with both kids and parents. All The Hitler's Head Scenes From "THEY SAVED HITLER'S BRAIN" (1963/68) (video)
Originally titled "Madmen of Mandoras", this 1963 film was renamed "They Saved Hitler's Brain" by its distributor...
...and released in 1968 with additional footage filmed by UCLA students which doesn't match the original film at all.
Needless to say, it is considered one of the worst films of all time, a claim that is augmented by the sight...
...of Hitler's living head in a glass jar, barking "Mach schnell! Mach schnell!"

"YOU CANNOT KILL DAVID ARQUETTE" -- SUPER LTD Acquires North American Rights to David Darg and Price James’ Compelling and Buzzy SXSW Sensation
SUPER LTD Acquires North American Rights to David Darg and Price James’ Compelling and Buzzy SXSW Sensation
"YOU CANNOT KILL DAVID ARQUETTE"
Marks the First Documentary Film Acquired Out of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival
NEW YORK, NY | May 1, 2020 – SUPER LTD, the boutique division and incubator from NEON, announced today that they have acquired North American rights to David Darg and Price James’ wildly entertaining and poignant documentary, You Cannot Kill David Arquette, an official selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival.
Filmed over three years chronicling the grueling journey through Arquette’s life and wrestling, the film was one of the most buzzed-about titles to have its Austin premiere disrupted. The film instead had its debut in early March at the Arquette’s California home a mere 24 hours after hearing about the SXSW cancellation, surrounded by friends, family and a homemade wrestling ring.
Following his infamous championship run as part of a marketing stunt for the film Ready to Rumble, David Arquette is widely known as the most hated man in pro-wrestling worldwide. Nearly 20 years after he "won" the initial title, through ups and downs in his career, with his family, and with his struggles with addiction, Arquette seeks redemption by returning to the ring for real this time. You Cannot Kill David Arquette features intimate footage of his journey, alongside interviews with sisters Patricia and Rosanna Arquette, Courteney Cox, and iconic pro wrestler, Ric Flair.
Directors David Darg and Price James commented, "We couldn't be more excited to have SUPER LTD as a partner for our film. They understand how to bring films to passionate audiences and there's no more passionate audiences than wrestling."
Executive Producer and star David Arquette remarked, "I set out to make this film to stand up for myself, to rewrite the ending to my story, and find a place where I could be proud of my time in the ring. We couldn't wish for a better company to share this love letter to the wrestling world."
You Cannot Kill David Arquette is directed by David Darg and Price James and produced by Christina McLarty Arquette, Bryn Mooser, David Darg, Ross Levine, Stacey Souther. The XTR and One Last Run production is executive produced by Franklin and Gabby McLarty, David Arquette, Justin Lacob, Kathryn Everett. The film is edited by Paul Rogers with a score by Matt Glass.
Jeff Deutchman negotiated the deal for SUPER LTD with Eric Sloss of Cinetic, on behalf of the filmmakers. You Cannot Kill David Arquette will be released by SUPER LTD, with release plans to be announced at a later date.
