Did Hoss Cartwright Play A Monster In A 3 Stooges Comedy? (video)

Before landing the role of "Hoss" in the western classic "Bonanza"...

...Dan Blocker played a grotesque alien monster in the 3 Stooges comedy "Outer Space Jitters" (1957).

Comic Con Showing "DARK SPECTER 2" -- Superhero Short Film

Superhero Short DARK SPECTER 2 To Be Featured At San Diego Comic-Con

It has been an incredible journey so far for the Dark Specter team. After racking up a slew of awards over the last year including four “Best Short Film” wins, Dark Specter 2 will be featured at Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival in San Diego this July.  The superhero short has been gaining praise for its unique take on the genre, combining action, comedy, and an original storyline.

The Dark Specter is an unlikely supervillain. Though he can throw fire from his arms, he’s not all powerful or accomplished. In fact, he’s unknown. A supervillain wannabe if you will. Mixing action with comedy, the story takes an interesting turn when we are shown the Dark Specter’s relationship with his mother. Nagging, but well-meaning, she is clearly suffering from the early stages of dementia. The Dark Specter is torn between his rise to infamy and caring for his loved one. Ah, the challenges of balancing the pursuit of dreams with reality.

WATCH THE TRAILER

Dark Specter 2 has already caught the attention of many. Indie Shorts Magazine called it “a brilliant take on the superhero genre, subverting the paradigm, well supported by a stellar cast and incredible writing.” At the Mindfield Film Festival in Albuquerque, they took home “Best Short Film,” “Best Actor” for Bruce Nachsin who plays the Dark Specter, and “Best Director” for Richard Tatum all in one day.  You can see a full list of awards and press here: http://www.darkspecter.com/media-press/

In May, Dark Specter 2 was released publicly on Facebook and was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. In has garnered over 38K views and it is still on the rise.  You can see the full film here: https://www.facebook.com/thedarkspecter/videos/418735552026551/

So where is all of this heading? Well, the goal is to turn Dark Specter into a full-length series and the team has been hard at work trying to make that happen. "It is an honor and a dream fulfilled to be featured as part of the Comic-Con Film Festival. I can't wait to be there with all you people who are fans of superhero fun. I hope to meet you and entertain you," says Bruce Nachsin creator of Dark Specter.

Dark Specter 2 is scheduled to be shown at Comic-Con  International Independent Film Festival in San Diego on Saturday, July 20th.  Dark Specter 2 will be part of the “Comics-Oriented” block which starts at 11:00 AM.  The Dark Specter team will be available to meet with fans and filmmakers who are interested in discussing the film.  A short panel discussion will take place following the showing.

The CCI-IFF takes place in the convention facility of the Marriott Marquis and Marina Hotel, next door to the Hall A side of the San Diego Convention Center.  The Film Festival room is Marriott Grand Ballroom 6, which is located on the second level of the building.  Look for signage onsite directing you to the screening room.

The Best Scene In "Star Trek" History? ("The Doomsday Machine", 1967) (video)

The ship's is rigged to explode with a 30-second delay, but the transporter is acting up...

Small Town Monsters Debuts First Trailer For 70s Grindhouse Homage "MOMO: THE MISSOURI MONSTER" -- See It HERE!

Small Town Monsters Unveils First Look at

"MOMO: THE MISSOURI MONSTER"

First Trailer and Stills Released for Narrative Horror/Documentary Hybrid
Docudrama Set to Premiere This Fall

Wadsworth, OH -- Small Town Monsters has released the first look at their new docudrama MOMO: The Missouri Monster.  The newest creature feature from Small Town Media founder and director Seth Breedlove, MOMO: The Missouri Monster seeks to tell the true, and truly strange story of the Missouri Monster.

The hair-covered, three-toed monstrosity was said to have prowled the forests of Star Hill, near Louisiana, Missouri during the summer of 1972 where it was spotted by terrified citizens for weeks.

The case gained national media attention during the '70s and remains one of the largest tourist draws for the tiny town on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first trailer for the film lands today and hints at the storytelling devices employed, as well as some of the fascinating interviews and locations.  Breedlove describes MOMO: The Missouri Monster as "Rashomon meets Creature from Black Lake or The Legend of Boggy Creek".

WATCH THE TRAILER

The film stars Adam Duggan and Sara Heddleston, as well as Animal Planet's Cliff Barackman and James "Bobo" Fay with special appearances by Janet Jay and Elizabeth Saint (Ghosts of Shepherdstown).  A grindhouse-style poster was created by artist Adrienne Breedlove.

The latest release from Small Town Monsters and director Seth Breedlove, MOMO: The Missouri Monster is told in both narrative and documentary form. The narrative sections appear as a lost b-movie from the 1970s, inspired by Breedlove's lifelong fascination with grindhouse movies and creature features. The horror film depicts the widely accepted details of the MOMO legend and is eventually contradicted and corrected by the actual survivors who lived through the events.

The latest title to crawl forth from the production powerhouse behind last year's best-selling documentary On the Trail of Bigfoot, MOMO: The Missouri Monster is set for a fall release. A midnight premiere is scheduled at the Kentucky Theater in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, September 6th with cast and crew in attendance.

The premiere will coincide with Cryptid-Con, a cryptozoology and paranormal convention celebrating its third year and featuring a number of renowned authors, television personalities, and speakers.

Just How Much Time Did Frankenstein's Monster Spend On A Lab Table? (video)

If you watch the entire Universal series with Frankenstein's Monster...

...the Monster often spends an inordinate amount of time strapped to lab tables.

In the original 1931 film, of course, he's born on one...
...and almost dies on it.

In the sequel, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), he avoids them altogether.
SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939) puts him back on the table...
...and so does GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN (1942).

In FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN (1943), he's on the table...
...just long enough for a quick pick-me-up.

It's in the two HOUSE movies where he really racks up the table time.

HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944)
HOUSE OF DRACULA (1945)

In these films, he gets up for a brief last-reel stomp and that's it.

Finally, after a brief lie-down in ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948)...
...he gets to go on a proper rampage.

"AMITYVILLE 1974" -- Casey La Scala Heads to Amityville with Wonderfilm

"AMITYVILLE 1974"

Wonderfilm is Heading to Amityville with Casey La Scala at the Helm

BEVERLY HILLS, CA (June 17, 2019) -- The Wonderfilm Media Corporation announced today that it has green lit the horror film “Amityville 1974” to begin principal photography in November of this year.

The film is based on the real life tragedy that spawned THE AMITYVILLE HORROR novel and subsequent films when Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot all six members of his family on a fateful November night. This tragedy was seared into the minds of the public consciousness by writer Jay Anson, whose book “The Amityville Horror” recounted the terror experienced by a family moving into the house in 1975 but fleeing after 28 days driven out by hostile supernatural forces. Wonderfilm’s Amityville 1974 will tell the story of the DeFeo’s horrifying murderous rampage.

Casey La Scala (Donnie Darko, The Remaining) will direct from a script he wrote. Jeff Bowler and Shaun Redick (Get Out/ Blackkklansman) will produce for Wonderfilm. Todd Garner(Tag/Mortal Kombat) will also produce. Bret Saxon and Yvette Yates will Executive Produce.

Wonderfilm’s sister company, Wonderfilm Global, will launch worldwide sales at TIFF, while currently negotiating with domestic theatrical distributors. Wonderfilm is fully financing the picture.

“We are beyond thrilled to introduce Amityville 1974. Casey has a truly unique and terrifying vision for the fright franchise and audiences will experience horror like never before with this film,” said Jeff Bowler, founding partner of Wonderfilm Media.

“This is a story that takes its jumping off point from the true facts surrounding the Defeo tragedy, but also focuses on the human drama that took place inside a family as they were relentlessly stalked by a terrifying evil .” said Casey La Scala

La Scala adapted and will produce the inspirational book “Fly a Little Higher” for Warner Brothers Studios which goes into production this year with Justin Baldoni(five feet apart) directing.

La Scala is repped by Paradigm and Ziffren, Brittenham.

About Wonderfilm Media

LONERS -- Movie Review by Porfle

If you are or have ever been a loner, chances are you may identify with at least one of the lead characters in the 2019 indie comedy LONERS.

Especially when they become perilously persecuted for their solitary tendencies, forced to wear a tracking headband emblazoned with a big red "L" and capable of delivering electric shocks, and assigned to group therapy presided over by a hippy-dippy dork with a remote electro-zap button in case you don't get with the program.

Yes, it's a dystopian near-future where the government has decided that too many mass killings are committed by "loners" and the best way to stop them is to identify all the loners in society (or rather out of it) and force them to be sociable.

But of course it's not as clear-cut as that, which we learn watching some of the people in charge of the program and seeing how messed up they are as they eavesdrop on those they deem unstable.

There are, in fact, various factions at odds with each other both in and out of the Department of Homeland Security, one of them played by familiar character actor Stephen Tobolowsky (GROUNDHOG DAY), which lends Neil McGowan's screenplay some of its interesting elements of mystery.

But the real fun here is meeting the group of loners and watching them trying to deal with it all as they attend the insufferable group therapy sessions with all their fake cheer and idiotic role-playing games designed to teach everyone how to mingle with others and enjoy their company.

This is a generally irascible bunch who enjoy their solitude, so seeing them chafe as their flaky group leader flits around conducting "get to know ya" exercises, all the time with his finger on the remote zapper, is very amusing.

And then there's the weekly "poker night" where everyone gets together at someone's apartment and holds hands for an hour because they've found that this somehow fulfills their physical interaction quota for the week and keeps the SWAT squad from breaking their doors down.

It's fun listening to them bicker endlessly about every little thing, especially since we know that these misfits are eventually going to form a modest rebel alliance against the state.  A new member of the group, Senise (Melissa Paladino), shakes things up and helps build a fire under the others until they finally start trying to overcome their personal differences and work together.

It's the first feature by director Eryc Tramonn, who has a snappy visual style that keeps even the more static scenes moving.  The cast is filled with outstanding actors including Paladino, Brian Letscher as failed athlete Lincoln Chalk, scripter McGowan as timid weakling Dabney Spargle, Tyson Turrou as hostile landscaper Tanner, Brenda Davidson as mousey librarian Franny, and Khary Payton as Jeremy, who's too crazy even for their motley group of misfits.

We get to watch their progress from one session to another as this talented ensemble perform their characters as though they've been doing it on the theater stage for awhile (some scenes, in fact, make this feel like a well-written play adapted for the screen).

Senise's attempts to get her group peers to form a deeper interest in each other's personal lives are also filled with funny moments and even a few that veer  close to actual drama.  (Albeit, thankfully, not too close.)

Just as the film seems to be sticking strictly to light comedy and satire, however, the shadowy government figures behind the "loners" program move against its organized opposition with our heroes right in the middle, leading to a suspenseful, surprising, and even twisty final sequence that really ties this modestly mirthful romp up in a nice bow.  And needless to say, LONERS is the ideal comedy to watch by yourself.

LOLA -- DVD Review by Porfle

When LOLA (Indiepix, 198?) was over, I felt a bit as though I'd just been released from custody. Watching it is almost a punitive experience, not so much "entertainment" as punishment for whatever bad thing you've done in the past that you thought you'd gotten away with.

Not to say that I didn't find it interesting, as I do all of the Retro Afrika films from the 1980s-90s which were made for black audiences during South African apartheid. As a cultural artifact, it has the same kind of fascination common to these films which, thankfully, are now being restored and preserved for posterity.

Most of them, however, are way more fun to watch because they really try hard to imitate Hollywood films of various genres (action, crime thriller, martial arts, comedy, even science fiction) but with no budgets or resources, resulting in amateurish yet engaging efforts that are often quite endearing.

LOLA is, in fact, the first of these apartheid-era films which I found truly difficult to finish.  The sparse story could have been thoroughly explored in ten minutes, and as far as technique goes, I've seen security-cam footage that was more cinematic.

Indeed, many scenes are simply master shots so interminable that we begin to feel as though we're keeping the characters under surveillance, waiting for them to do something worthy of attention. There's minimal editing, and most of the dialogue is clearly improvised chatter that goes on for minutes at a time.

The actors do seem quite comfortable in front of the camera, and have no trouble keeping up these lengthy conversations while in character.  Director Tony Cunningham is content to just aim the camera at them and let it run, as one would while taking the kind of home movie footage that puts your houseguests to sleep.

As for the story, we meet Lola (Constance Shangase) and her high school friends pondering where to go to university after graduation, which is the subject of the first long dialogue scene set in their homeroom at school.  Then, while walking home, they're taunted by a gang of no-account dropouts (one of whom has a crush on Lola), and the two disparate groups challenge each other to a volleyball match.

What follows are extra-long scenes of Lola's gang discussing and making plans about the big game and the after-party, as well as whatever else they can think of to gab about while pretending to drink big cups of tea.

In a way, these scenes are almost mind-blowing in their incredible blandness and lack of noteworthy content.  When one finally ends, another begins, and the cycle is repeated yet again.

A couple of training scenes break the monotony a bit, and, eventually, game day arrives.  Lola, her BFF, and their three male friends take on the five-man team of arrogant dropouts in a match that's little more than ten people who don't really play volleyball all that well bouncing it around until it's time to declare the winner.

Oh yeah, they take a break at halftime during which their teacher (the only white cast member, who speaks English) serves snacks on a plate and asks everyone to please return the peels.  Will everyone return their peels? That's about as suspenseful as the scene gets.

But it's not over yet. There's still the after-party, during which the ten of them squeeze into a tiny room for some awkward dancing and socializing. Then, incredibly, it's back to the schoolroom for another ten-minute random dialogue scene that meanders on until a merciful jump-cut to the closing credits.

Not only was I proud of my endurance, but, strangely enough, the film managed to deliver that same kind of fascination which all of the Retro Afrika titles do, not only as cultural artifacts but as examples of filmmakers putting actual movies together with less money and resources than most people spend on lunch.

And yes, I can imagine black South African apartheid-era teens having quite a good time sitting in a theater watching this harmless comedy, getting off on seeing characters like them with whom they can identify, and basking in its familiar, feel-good ambience.

LOLA is a film so obscure that it can't be found on IMDb and there's barely any reference to it at all online. Nobody even knows exactly what year it was made. But here it is, a survivor making it onto DVD in 2019 when so many of its kind have been lost, and in its own small, utterly unimposing way, I found watching it to be time well spent.

"CREATING WOODSTOCK" Documentary Tells Story Behind How It All Really Happened In 1969

CREATING WOODSTOCK

As the future of Woodstock 50 remains uncertain, a new documentary shows how festival founders made the unimaginable possible in 1969

Los Angeles, CA (June 11, 2019) – With the future of the highly anticipated Woodstock 50 music festival unclear, a younger generation may not know that the original “Three Days of Peace and Music” were also plagued by uncertainty, last-minute venue changes, a lack of headliners and permits… and in fact it almost didn’t happen! With more than 70 hours of interviews with Woodstock producers, planners, and performers – director Mick Richards, who attended the 1969 festival as a teenager, has created the most comprehensive and deeply researched look back at how the event came to be in CREATING WOODSTOCK.

Three decades in the making, CREATING WOODSTOCK resurrects the original site blueprints, features interviews with the founders of Woodstock Ventures – John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Michael Lang, and Artie Kornfield – and takes viewers from the initial idea of the “happening” to the moments when the last festival goer stumbled off Max Yasgur’s once pastural alfalfa field. Cinema Libre Studio has acquired the feature length documentary for a late July release.

“The producers, and everybody working on the original festival 50 years ago, somehow made it happen,” says Mick Richards, director of CREATING WOODSTOCK. “They were the finest production talent of their time and through professionalism, strength of will and sheer tenacity the festival happened, with a few minor glitches. So just like in ‘69, I’m confident that if there is a way to bring Woodstock 50 to fruition, the producers will find it.”

The documentary features never-before-seen private film and rare archival video footage, original interviews with key figures, and uncovered photographs that show just how much went in to pulling off the impossible. First-hand accounts of little known stories are woven throughout the film, such as when Jimi Hendrix was stranded at the airport and hitched a ride to the site, or when a bank manager was awoken in the middle of the night to get money to pay The Who, which then needed to be helicoptered to them before they would go on stage – much like the personal supply of strawberries that Janis Joplin required.

Synopsis: For three days in August 1969, nearly a half-million young people descended upon Max Yasgur's farm in upstate New York for the rock ‘n’ roll event that defined a generation. Mythologized for 50 years, the filmmakers set the record straight with "Creating Woodstock,” the most comprehensive examination of how the festival came to be using original interviews with key figures, rare archival footage and unearthed photographs.

The founders of Woodstock Ventures – John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Michael Lang, and Artie Kornfeld – along with the best production talent on either coast, including John Morris, Bill Belmont, Mel Lawrence, and Chip Monck recall moments from the initial idea for the festival, to the search for a suitable site and then the race to build a venue, promote the event and, most importantly, book the bands.

Find out why the Grateful Dead wanted a “do over" and Crosby, Stills & Nash weren’t going to show up, why The Who refused to play and Jimi Hendrix almost didn’t make it, and how it turned into a free concert. Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, and Leslie West recount their experiences, including performing on a stage that nearly collapsed, and learn how a 15-year-old girl may have saved the festival from being shut down entirely!
