MORE Rare 3 Stooges Comedy Scenes! (From "Swing Parade of 1946") (video)

In this Monogram release, the Stooges are dishwashers...

...who help a singer (Gale Storm) and a nightclub owner (Phil Regan) find love.

Some of their earlier MGM bits with Ted Healy are reprised...
...as well as scenes from their Columbia shorts.

The film was made after Curly's initial series of minor strokes...
...which noticeably affected his performances and appearance.

Although the film has the usual low-budget Monogram atmosphere...
...the boys do their best to liven things up.

And despite his ill health Curly has some great moments.

One sequence reworks bits from "A-Plumbing We Will Go" and its remakes.

Finally, the Stooges get the formal treatment during the big finale.

THE ODDS -- DVD Review by Porfle

Writer-director Bob Giordano (the upcoming GATES OF FLESH) isn't fooling around with his feature film debut, the nail-biting suspense thriller THE ODDS (2018).

Not counting a brief fantasy scene or two, the whole thing takes place in one dingy warehouse room with a table and two chairs, wherein a stunning contest takes place--one woman, billed as "The Player" (Abbi Butler, THE BENCHWARMERS, KILLING CHRISTIAN) competes with a number of other unseen players around the world to see who can survive a series of challenges, while the "Game Master" (James J. Fuertes, "Doom Patrol") oversees his own player while keeping track of the others' progress via an earpiece.

Naturally, each round consists of an increasingly difficult and painful task that will have viewers cringing in sympathetic pain.  The Player must continue until the others either fail or drop out, in hopes of winning a million-dollar prize as gamblers wager on the results. She's doing it all for her daughter, a worthy goal which drives her on.

The Game Master, meanwhile, offers helpful advice and sympathy as he talks her through each round and gives first aid to her increasingly grievous wounds.  He's so nice, in fact, that we begin to suspect his actual intentions.

Before long we even start wondering whether or not he's lying to her about how the game is progressing elsewhere. Is he just toying with her to satisfy his own sinister sadistic impulses?

Giordano keeps us guessing about this and other things, but the main question that drives THE ODDS along with such edge-of-the-seat suspense is how bad will the next round be, and can she get through it?

The first, holding her hand over a candle flame until the number of players has decreased to a certain minimum, seems bad enough, but turns out to be child's play.  Before it's over, she will have put herself through perversely creative agonies that might be described as self-inflicted torture porn.

As the tasks intensify, so does the conflict between Player and Game Master until fascades fall away and true faces emerge.  The stakes are ramped up as well and the rules keep changing until she's not even sure if he's still following them or making new ones up as he goes along.

It's the classic two character, one setting conflict drama that works well on stage and is even more impressive when pulled off this deftly on the movie screen. Director Giordano succeeds in keeping things well-paced and visually interesting with creative camera angles and editing, while both lead actors are so into their roles as to be utterly convincing.

While it's hardly as unbearable as the Russian roulette sequence from THE DEER HUNTER, those who agonized their way through that will have a good idea of what they're getting into when they watch THE ODDS.  It's a harrowing and dramatically intense experience, and even manages to give us a slam-bang shoot-em-up ending to go with its final plot twist.

NEON To Release Bong Joon-Ho’s Palme D'or Winner "PARASITE" on October 11, 2019

NEON TO RELEASE BONG JOON-HO’S PALME D'OR WINNER

“PARASITE”

ON OCTOBER 11, 2019

May 30, 2019 – NEON, which just World Premiered Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite to critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, will be releasing the unanimously chosen Palme d’Or Winner on October 11, 2019 in Los Angeles and New York, positioning the title as a prime awards season contender in the international film category and beyond.  The lauded film will receive a traditional arthouse platform release.

Parasite, which critics described as “brilliant,” an “exceptional pitch-black tragicomedy” and a “nerve-racking masterpiece,” marks Bong's comeback to Korean language film following Okja and Snowpiercer. It is also his fourth collaboration with Song Kang-Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host, Memories of Murder) who stars in the film. Parasite marks the 5th collaboration between NEON CEO, Tom Quinn and director Bong Joon-Ho. Quinn released Bong’s Snowpiercer to become one of the highest grossing multi-platform titles of all time.

Bong Joon-ho brings his singular skillset home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale.

Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks give the Kims a way out of their shabby circumstances. But this new ecosystem is fragile, and soon enough greed and class prejudice threaten to upend the Kims’ newfound comfort.

Kwak Sin Ae and Jang Young Hwan from Barunson E&A Corp produced, with CJ Entertainment handling international sales and set to distribute in Korea.

At Cannes, NEON also acquired Celine Sciamma’s highly acclaimed Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which won the Best Screenplay award.

The company recently garnered an Academy Award® nomination for Border, Sweden‘s entry for best foreign language film.   At Sundance, NEON premiered Todd Douglas Miller’s stunning cinematic event Apollo 11, which just surpassed $8 million at the box office, as well as John Chester’s The Biggest Little Farm.  The company has been picking up some of the hottest acquisitions, nabbing the rights to Alejandro Landers’ Monos starring Julianne Nicholson; Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska’s documentary Honeyland; Chinonye Chukwu’s Clemency, starring Academy Award® Nominee Alfre Woodard; Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's horror film The Lodge; Abe Forsythe’s Little Monsters; and Julius Onah’s Luce.

TERROR IN THE SKIES -- DVD Review by Porfle

Filmmaker Seth Breedlove (ON THE TRAIL OF BIGFOOT, THE MOTHMAN OF POINT PLEASANT, THE BRAY ROAD BEAST) once again indulges his fascination for cryptozoology with the documentary TERROR IN THE SKIES (Small Town Monsters, 2019).  Those also interested in the subject should find this latest foray into the mysterious world of phantom crypto-creatures to be a worthwhile diversion.

Breedlove goes way back in history to our first known encounters with large flying birds known by the Native Americans as "Thunderbirds" (they were often reported seen as a harbinger of approaching thunderstorms).

These giant vulture-like beasts were reported to attack humans and even carry the smaller ones away to be consumed in a cave which one explorer claimed to have discovered strewn with human bones (this cave has never been found).

Flash forward several centuries to the areas of Illinois and Missouri that border the Mississippi River, and Breedlove's research turns up a wealth of eyewitness accounts of the huge flying creatures spanning the decades all the way up to 2016.

One of the most harrowing accounts is that of a mother who looked through the window to see her small son being carried away but surviving the encounter when the bird lost its grip.  Pets and livestock have also been seen to be swept up and taken into the skies.

Much of the documentary consists of scenic footage taken by the film crew in both rural and urban locations in the Illinois area (we see them doing so in the DVD's "production diary" bonus feature), which was then skillfully edited along with a lot of interesting interviews with learned researchers, witnesses, and other related parties to produce a fast-moving, pleasantly watchable experience enhanced by well-rendered animations, reenactments, newsreel footage (real and simulated), and other media.

There's even some actual film footage purported to be of a genuine "thunderbird" sighting, although, being unsubstantiated, this must be taken with a grain of salt along with most of the documentary's other claims.

Still, much of the eyewitness testimony sounds convincing, and we're shown newspaper clippings that tell of various "flaps" (periods of widespread sightings) which abound with firsthand accounts.

Breedlove goes on to explore Chicago's famous "Mothman" sightings, consisting of a terrifying human-like figure with large black wings that has been seen both in the city and surrounding environs. As in the bird-creature segments, he is careful to keep his film from becoming a full-fledged endorsement of such sightings while managing to present enough evidence and conjecture to leave the possibility of their veracity wide open.

Even for those who are skeptical that there are gigantic, man-eating birds or humanoid moth monsters roaming the skies over the Midwest, TERROR IN THE SKIES is a thought-provoking collection of personal accounts, historical records, and other materials over which to ponder and try to come up with an answer. For those inclined to believe, the answer is already there and the film is an exciting affirmation of how truly filled with unknown wonders our world can be.

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and BD Wong Reprise Their Roles For Universal Studios Hollywood’s New Mega Attraction, “JURASSIC WORLD--THE RIDE”

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and BD Wong Reprise Their Roles as Owen Grady, Claire Dearing and Dr. Henry Wu For Universal Studios Hollywood’s New Mega Attraction, “Jurassic World—The Ride,” Opening this Summer

Plus, a First Look at the Ride’s Mosasaurus, Inside the Ride’s Massive Aquarium Observatory Tank

Universal City, CA, May 23, 2019 – Stars of the JURASSIC WORLD films Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and BD Wong reprise their roles as Owen Grady, Claire Dearing and Dr. Henry Wu, bringing their characters from the silver screen to Universal Studios Hollywood’s much anticipated mega attraction, “Jurassic World—The Ride,” opening this summer.

This marks the first time the cast will appear as their iconic characters outside of the JURASSIC WORLD films for a theme park attraction.  As part of original content created exclusively for the new ride, Owen, Claire and Dr. Wu will shed light on their interactions with the dinosaurs along with facts and information about the imposing prehistoric creatures that first roamed the earth more than 65 million years ago.

This spectacular new ride will feature an original storyline that will take guests on a breathtaking excursion through the theme park as depicted in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s film, JURASSIC WORLD.  It will soar to new heights with the addition of iconic dinosaurs from the movie, including the colossal Indominus rex and the magnificent aquatic Mosasaurus in her natural habitat.

For the first time, JURASSIC WORLD fans will have the chance to see this impressive creature and become immersed within her massive Aquarium Observatory.  Appearing to span over 60 feet in length and tipping the scales at over 30K pounds through stunning state-of-the-art visual effects, the Mosasaurus is a sight to behold as she moves just inches away from guests throughout her glass enclosure filled with the equivalent of 3.5 million gallons of water.

Universal Creative collaborated with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to bring the Mosasaurus to life and to capture the realism of her underwater environment using a combination of spectacular visual effects and cutting-edge technologies, including the use of motion parallax, a technique that shifts the guest’s perspective of the Mosasaurus as she moves throughout the tank.

The team also employed a series of lighting enhancements allowing the aquarium to intuitively shift from day to night, as well as visual changes to the environment during inclement weather, thus creating a variety of visual scenarios guests can experience based on when they experience the ride.

“Jurassic World—The Ride” captures the essence of the blockbuster movie and comes to life in collaboration with the award-winning and inspired minds at Universal Creative, the Academy Award®-winning special-effects visionaries at Industrial Light & Magic, a division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., Universal Pictures and acclaimed filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow and Frank Marshall.

When “Jurassic World—The Ride” opens this summer, guests will be welcomed to a dramatically reimagined space reflective of the hit films.  A fresh entry statement, stonework landscaping, and a contemporary redesign of the iconic JURASSIC WORLD gates, illuminated with billowing flames, will create the framework for the all new aesthetics.

Once guests pass through the queue, they will board specially designed rafts that will navigate the lush environs of dense vegetation and traverse new areas besieged with towering dinosaurs meandering at just an arm’s length away.  Encounters with such docile creatures as the Stegosaurus and Parasaurolophus will quickly turn awry as predatory Velociraptors and Dilophosaurus begin to wreak havoc, turning guests from spectators to prey.  When the Tyrannosaurus rex begins to battle one of the attraction’s new ferocious dinosaurs, the rafts will spill down a treacherous 84-foot waterfall as the sole means of escape.

Located adjacent to the ride will be a new elaborately themed “Raptor Encounter” where Blue, the beloved Velociraptor from the JURASSIC WORLD franchise, will engage guests in daring face-to-face encounters.

In addition, a new interactive “Dino Play” area will incorporate educational components within an inspired space where children of all ages can explore and excavate giant dinosaur fossils.

Stooges On Fire! Three Stooges Doing Their Own Fire Stunts (video)

Of all the dangerous stunts the Three Stooges did over the years...

...few matched the times when they were literally set on fire.

Moe flirts with flame in "A Plumbing We Will Go" (1940).
In "Pardon My Backfire" (1948), Moe lights up for real.
And again in the "A Plumbing We Will Go" remake, "Vagabond Loafers" (1949).
All three are set ablaze in "Income Tax Sappy" (1954).

But most harrowing of all...

...is Shemp's extended fire stunt in "Heavenly Daze" (1948).

During a poker game in "Out West" (1947)...

...the Stooges slip bad guy "Doc" Barker a doctored drink.

Doc reacts badly, but survives.

In the loose remake, "Pals and Gals" (1953), much of this footage is repeated...

...only this time, in a newly-filmed scene, "Doc" dies.

Or does he?

Oops! Thanks to a bit of careless editing, Doc's is back!

How to Stuff a Wild Bikini is directed by William Asher (Beach Blanket Bingo, Muscle Beach Party), written by Asher and Leo Townsend (Beach Blanket Bingo, I’d Rather Be Rich), photographed by Academy Award winner Floyd Crosby (Tabu: A Story of the South Seas - 1931) with music by Les Baxter (Beach Blanket Bingo, Muscle Beach Party).
