Low-budget and low-key, RIDGE RUNNERS (Indican Pictures, 2018) is a methodical police procedural that eschews big action moments and forced drama for a more realistic approach which highlights the personal lives of a female police detective and her male partner as they investigate the disappearance of a young girl.
Rachel Willow (Jennica Schwartzman) is single, lives with her widowed mother, and doesn't want to be a cop anymore. She's having an affair with her partner Rob Shepherd (Austin Haley) which is a dead end since, in addition to being a decent guy, he happens to be married.
Still, they work well together, which comes in handy when they're charged with finding out what happened to 12-year-old Halley Dawn (Tatum Chandler), who has disappeared from the home where she lives with her ne'er-do-well mom Maddie (Charlee Graham).
What they don't know, we do--the movie opens with a frightened Halley being forced to turn tricks at a truck stop, obviously having been kidnapped into the sex trade. So we know what's at stake, how much danger the little girl is in, and how imperative it is that Rachel and Rob solve this case as quickly as possible.
Which, of course, happens at about the same speed as pouring molasses. Their investigation is slow, painstaking, and by the book, as they question the usual suspects including Maddie, her neighbors, Halley's teacher Mr. Flynn (Jennica Schwartzman's husband Ryan), and, most importantly, the shady characters Maddie works for as an accountant at a race track owned by a lowlife named Clayton (Jason Thompson).
The secret of Halley's captor (or captors) is revealed surprisingly early, turning the story from a mystery into a race against time. But we still get some shocking surprises here and there as we discover some of the other people involved in the crime and also witness the sad (but realistic) demise of a major character through the eyes of various world-weary loved ones.
While some may find RIDGE RUNNERS too slow and unsensational for their tastes, I was gradually drawn into and captivated by this slice-of-life look at frustrating and often fruitless detective work as well as interpersonal concerns which are equally well-drawn and share the same fruitless frustration.
Jonesboro, Arkansas natives Hunter West and Austin Lott make their feature debuts here as director and writer, respectively, setting the film in their relatively quiet hometown which throws the sordid events into sharper relief.
The performances are restrained and controlled, yet on the mark. Jennica Schwartzman is especially good as Rachel, whose uncertainty about her job tends to fade when circumstances turn her into a smart, dogged, and finally almost vengeful agent of justice.
RIDGE RUNNERS lets us settle into a story that's involving without having to be stoked up with empty action and melodrama. When all the plot threads start winding together, it's exciting enough just to see what finally happens and how it affects the people inexorably caught up in it all.

In this tense scene between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, there's an interesting little extra.
The "little extra" is the kid in the background. He seems to be psychic.
After numerous noisy takes, he knows there's about to be a loud bang.
So he plugs his ears!

Sure, he's always shooting at us through that gun barrel. But how often has James Bond really broken the 4th wall and acknowledged our presence? Or even talked to us?

Riding in on a wave of nostalgia for those of us who first watched the show back in the 60s is Time-Life's new DVD THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW IN COLOR, featuring 4 newly-remastered episodes of the classic variety series.
The expansively rotund Gleason, known as "The Great One", is a natural who obviously revels in the thrill of entertaining a big, appreciative audience. He puts on a genuine live show, not just something that's being taped as a product for home viewing. The result is a real audience/performer dynamic and actual, not canned, crowd responses.
Like Johnny Carson later on, he begins each monologue by joking about the flamboyant attire of his bandleader, Sammy Spear. Then a celebrity guest appears and they trade one-liners.
Topping things off in grand style, there's usually a segment of "The Honeymooners" with Gleason as bus driver Ralph Kramden, Art Carney as his sewer-worker pal Norton, Sheila MacRae as Alice Kramden, and Jane Kean as Norton's wife Trixie.
The disc features three screamingly funny "Honeymooners" segments that haven't been shown since first aired. In the first, Ralph intercepts a note from Alice's vet and thinks the dire news about her mother's dog is in regard to his own health.
The second is another delightful exercise in miscommunication as Ralph thinks that a birthday present Alice sent to herself on his behalf is from a secret admirer. In the third, Ralph's plan to sue the bus company for an on-the-job injury backfires big-time.
Gleason and the comedy pros he hosts during each show are actually funny as they play expertly off each other instead of just reading tired lines churned out by hack writers on cue cards (something that would drag down Bob Hope's TV specials).
In three of these four episodes, Red Buttons comes cavorting onto the stage like a wisecracking firecracker, dancing around and rattling off his usual "never got a (dinner, plaque, etc.)" routine as well as other comedy bits which, surprisingly for those who don't usually care for him, are often hilariously funny.
Both Red and legendary top banana Phil Silvers yak it up with Jackie in episode one. Then, Frankie Avalon, a teen idol with a winning personality who could actually sing, does a snappy number.
The second show's guests are Morey Amsterdam, who trades quips with Jackie and then regails the appreciative audience with a rapid-fire series of jokes in between playing the cello, and a young pre-"Brady Bunch" Florence Henderson sings a number.
Red Buttons returns for some ethnic humor that really brings back feelings of nostalgia for a time when people didn't automatically get offended over everything.
Show #3 features Nipsey Russell doing his act complete with trademark rhymes, and comedy veteran Jan Murray. The final episode (which doesn't include a "Honeymooners" segment) offers up a young George Carlin doing his early "straight" stand-up, a wacky rendition of "Cabaret" by Edie Adams in which she imitates Zsa Zsa Gabor and Phyllis Diller, and an extended comedy duel between Jackie and "Mr. Television", Milton Berle.
Each show clocks in at somewhat less than the usual hour's entertainment for the era (minus time for commercials), so it's apparent that some material, most likely the song and dance stuff, has been excised. Which is just as well, since I'd probably just fast-forward through the June Taylor Dancers anyway.
Whether you still have hazy memories of seeing these shows first-run or just want to enjoy some good old-fashioned variety entertainment by a showbiz legend and his talented guests, THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW IN COLOR is a dose of pure fun.

XLRATOR MEDIA PRESENTS "THE GIANT KILLER" AVAILABLE ON VOD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2018 A film by David Yuzuk
Miami police officer David Yuzuk befriends a tiny homeless man and after 15 years of friendship the man, Richard J. Flaherty finally reveals who he really is. Yuzuk learns that this unassuming 69-year-old man was the smallest soldier to ever serve in the U.S. military. Flaherty’s military records reveal that he rose to the rank of a Special Forces Green Beret Captain and was awarded the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, and 2 Purple Hearts for his actions in Vietnam.
Flaherty warns Yuzuk not to dig to deep into his life story and states, ͞because it would be bad for your career and dangerous to my health.͟ Despite the warnings Yuzuk locates and contacts a retired federal agent that worked undercover with Flaherty in the 1980’s. The agent advises Yuzuk that everything Flaherty told him is true. Six hours later Yuzuk is informed that Flaherty was just killed by a hit and run driver.
Yuzuk is now compelled to go on a quest to learn everything about his friend’s mysterious life and death. As Yuzuk goes deeper into the rabbit hole of Richard Flaherty’s life the truth starts becoming stranger than fiction. In one final twist to this already incredible story Yuzuk finds Flaherty’s passport and it reveals that in the time that he was living as a homeless man he was also secretly traveling to dangerous locations around the world; Amman Jordan, Iraq, Thailand, Vietnam, and Puerto La Cruz Venezuela.

During the big funeral scene, Michael (Al Pacino) confers with Tessio (Abe Vigoda).
Michael rises, and briefly the screen is dark.
For an instant, a phantom face appears on the right of the screen.
Ghost? Weird anomaly? Too much garlic?
Actually, it's Mama Corleone (Morgana King), who's sitting next to Michael, in a freak camera lens reflection.
Simple explanation, but it still looks kinda creepy.

John Wayne plays legendary cattleman "Big Jake" McCandles. When outlaw Richard Boone leads an attack on his ranch, Jake's son (played by Bobby Vinton) goes into action.
Either that post was meant to break away...or Vinton's stuntman was supposed to miss it altogether.
Instead, the unyielding post spears him right in the chest.

"PACIFIC RIM UPRISING" In Theaters: March 23, 2018
Genre: 3D Epic Adventure Cast: John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day
The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld.
But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

It's a common but fun trick when the star "becomes" the stunt person in one unbroken take. My favorite example is in the first James Bond film, "Dr. No." First, we see Sean Connery and Ursula Andress. They run behind some scenery, and, without cutting away, the stunt people emerge to dazzle and amaze us. I neither own nor claim any rights to this material. Just having some fun with it. I always enjoy watching filmmakers take really low budgets and do all they can with them, especially in the area of sci-fi. This goes double for post-apocalyptic sci-fi in a world turned upside-down, which directors Ché Baker and Dallas Bland (with the help of their co-scripter Sarah Mason) have done a pretty nifty job of pulling off with BLUE WORLD ORDER (2017).
In this modest but effective Australian production, a nuclear war with strangely specific targets has left the northern hemisphere in ruins while a mystery virus creeps its way south and kills or mutates everything in its path. Jake Slater (Jake Ryan, THE GREAT GATSBY, "Wolf Creek") is somehow immune, as is his young daughter Molly (Billie Rutherford) although she's in a catatonic state.
As it turns out, all the children in the world have been killed by the virus, which makes Jake and Molly a top priority for the medical research wing of a group of paramilitary survivors led by Billy Zane.
Father and daughter are captured, but make their escape with the help of portly comedy-relief guy Madcap (Stephen Hunter), who tells Jake of a ragtag group of resisters living in a remote camp in the woods.
The trouble is, Zane's group has a tower that emits signals which control the minds of everyone exposed to the virus--which is, in effect, sort of a biological version of a computer virus, and Madcap can only fight its control by zapping himself with a taser-like device every few minutes.
He outlines his plan to Jake for getting into Zane's facility and blowing up the tower, a plan that's expedited by their subsequent capture, torture, and medical experimentation.
Naturally, all of this involves lots of running around, hand-to-hand combat (Jake's a tae-kwon-do master) against robot-like soldiers, and infiltrating this or that stronghold while trying to destroy that nasty mind-controlling tower.
There's also a measure of surprise as we discover that some of Zane's drones are actually undercover allies of Madcap's group (making it a game of "who do you trust?") and that the bad group's motives go deeper and darker than anyone suspects.
The filmmakers handle it all well enough, giving BLUE WORLD ORDER the look and feel of a pilot movie for a nicely-mounted cable-TV series (which the open ending would indeed suggest). The Australian exteriors are nice--that's a given--and the production design stretches its budget dollars into some passable underground sci-fi interiors.
There's even a stab at pulling off a ROAD WARRIOR-type chase sequence near the end, which isn't entirely successful but is fun enough in its own modest way. All of which is aided immeasurably by some good performances from the leads, including cameos by familiar Aussie stars Bruce Spence (the auto-gyro pilot from ROAD WARRIOR) and Jack Thompson (MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE).
It all adds up to passably fun entertainment, not great but certainly worth investing some time in if you're into sci-fi of the dystopian kind. As for that open ending, it certainly seems as if those of us who enjoyed BLUE WORLD ORDER may indeed have a sequel to look forward to.

Fairfax, VA (January 11, 2018) - Everything about Jackie Gleason was big: his huge talent, his outsized personality, and his expansive waist line. Even bigger was "The Jackie Gleason Show," his successful TV Variety show, taped in color from beautiful Miami Beach from 1966 to 1970. And, on February 6, following their acclaimed, recent releases of THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW: THE LOST EPISODES, THE RED SKELTON SHOW IN COLOR and, THE BOB HOPE TV SPECIALS, the TV DVD archivists at Time Life proudly release the inaugural DVD release of THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW IN COLOR, one of the '60s most beloved programs - and unseen for nearly 50 years!
Gleason was everyone's working-class hero, and his smash-hit show delivered an hour of non-stop entertainment every single week. Enthralled home audiences were treated to entertainment of the highest order - singing, dancing, hilarious comedy and Jackie at his very best as Ralph Kramden and on stage with all his famous friends - Milton Berle, Red Buttons, George Carlin, Nipsey Russell, Phil Silvers and more - and all in brilliant color! The single disc release of THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW IN COLOR features four never-before-released, remastered episodes of the show - including three unreleased Honeymooners sketches - all unseen for more than 50 years!
"The Jackie Gleason Show" had been broadcast live and later taped in New York City since 1952, but in 1964, Gleason wanted to be based where he could play golf all year round. Hank Meyer, a longtime South Florida publicist, knew just the spot and convinced Jackie to bring his show to Miami Beach, the sun and fun capital of the world. However, back in the '60s, it was a novel undertaking to broadcast from Miami Beach, and more than a hundred families relocated to stay with the show. Plus, there was barely any production infrastructure in South Florida, which all had to be created by Jackie and his team. However, it all paid off and the revamped show was a huge success!
"The Jackie Gleason Show" delivered Gleason's most indelible and legendary creation - Ralph Kramden - as well as an unforgettable gallery of characters he himself created and fine-tuned. But, most memorably, Gleason and Art Carney revived their Honeymooners roles, with Sheila MacRae and Jane Kean added as the new Alice and Trixie, all presented in glorious color for the first time.
Taped in Miami Beach until the final season in 1970, the master tapes had resided in a vault in South Florida - until now! So cue the travelin' music and heed the big man's message before he glides offstage: "And awaaay we go!" And how!
